11721  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I wish to create a currency on: August 25, 2011, 09:14:24 PM
Hi guys,
I'm not sure where this post belongs but I wish to propose to create a new currency as I'm not happy with the issues of some of them.

I lack programming skills so I need help to create it.If that ixcoin guy can do it why cant I?(yes I know it's not very original as its a copy of bitcoin but frankly he at least pulled it off even if it's not very well.)

That ixcon-guy did not create a currency, he created a nice little ponzi scam.

In regard to your question: You need a lot more than just programming skills. How about you present your ideas and gather a crowd first, who can then help you get it done?
11722  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: VPS hosting evalutation thread on: August 25, 2011, 09:13:24 PM
My opinion is a bit biased of course, so I will only add that FrozenOnline.com offers a full 5 day refund. So you could try us out for a few days. If it doesn't work out, you get your coins back. We would of course appreciate you sharing with us what problems you had so we can improve our services.

Your offer looks pretty cool, some questions:

  • Can I cancel service at any time (monthly)?
  • Can I upgrade at any time (increase storage / cpu) without having to re-setup?
  • Is first publicly accessible IPv4 address included?

"Other Coins" are welcome at TweetForum as well. There is no reason why we can't openly debate these auxiliary chains. http://tweetforum.com/other-currencys/

What's there to debate? People choose to mine them or not.

That's like saying there's nothing to debate in politics, people vote Republican or Democrat.

Maybe it's debatable wether or not they are worth to mine or acquire by other means. I myself am still unclear about the intentions of the creators and it would also be fun to discuss the different possible futures of this Coin or OtherCoins in general and the reflux this has to Bitcoin. Do the intentions of the creators matter in general or just the outcome of a project? Also the parameters of the currency itself are debatable (e.g. when will txfee change, how will it be done, what repurcussion will it have when people suddenly notice that these parameters can be changed rather easily and quietly). There's tons of stuff to debate, even if you think it's a scam. If you don't see any problems worth debating, you didn't look hard enough.

It doesn't seem to me you're someone who doesn't like to debate. Your post-count increases by like 50 posts everytime I see it.

Maybe if you had debated a little more before getting into the dixcoin, as you call them, debacle you wouldn't have to now make threads like "Was IXCoin a SCAM?".
11724  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Do we bring the value of BitCoins back up? on: August 25, 2011, 08:50:22 PM
Buy $40,000 USD worth of Bitcoins - that should do the trick instantly.

Now that would be awesome  Cool (and stupid at the same time I know)

Not necessarily stupid. It might start a rally, then it would've been genius in retrospect.

I need to learn how to code JSON so I can have a running parity calculator as ArtForz demonstrated.

jquery client-side: data = $.getJSON(url)
php server-side: $json = json_encode($data);
python server-side: json_string = json.dumps(data);

here we go, now you can code JSON Wink

If there are any bounties left.

Might I suggest, if the currency grows sufficiently to break off for a seperate forum solution?  Would be cleaner and I believe Solidcoin has a chance to be successful of its own accord.... might also reduce confusion for users who are coming into Cryptocurrency for the first time through Solidcoin.

Vladimir said OtherCoins are welcome to get their space in his new forum http://bitcoin.org.uk

Even though, I am not a big fun of alternative currencies. SolidCoin people are more than welcome to set up support subforum here. See how MMC have done it, for example.

Another question: Could this be cooled by submerging it into a small aquarium filled with mineral oil? Would one still use a heatsink in such a situation or is that unnecessary, with a liquid cooling solution?

It seems to me you're trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist. Think "pentium 90" in terms of cooling here.

I made a hashrate / difficulty chart:

   http://solidcoin.kicks-ass.org/graphs/graphs.html

I will add more graphs (e.g. "amount of coins mined" and if I can get to the data "exchange rate" and maybe "coin age"), but since RealSolid said it would probably qualify for the "Assorted Graphs" bounty, I'm publishing now (was beaten before by 20 minutes on the "First Block Explorer" bounty).

If it does qualify for the bounty, it can be payed to the donation address given on the page.

UPDATE0 Aug 19th 10:00 - I ordered Xilinx USB platform cable through ebay.de for €41.50 = $59 incl. shipping from HongKong.

UPDATE1 Aug 19th 10:10 - I received an invoice from Li via paypal and payed $440 (+$12 for shipping and handling) = $452. I noticed my shipping address in paypal was a very old address of mine and PMed Li with the correct address. I hope it'll work out.

UPDATE2 Aug 19th 10:20 - Li confirmed receiving the payment and also confirmed he would send to the correct shipping address.

UPDATE3 Aug 23rd 06:42 - PM from Li, saying he shipped the board! Gave me tracking-# and ETA 6-8 days.

I wrote down some very rough profitability calculations for this product:

https://bitcoin.org.uk/forums/topic/88-mining-for-profit-or-for-fun/page__view__findpost__p__418

It should be clear to anyone that at this point in time, such an investment can only be considered to be "for fun" or "a step in the door". Not trying to drive people away, though, this is the future of mining (alongside ASIC mining), just not the immediate future.
11731  Other / Off-topic / Re: Satoshi Nakamoto - 1,5 million Bitcoins - We need answers on: August 20, 2011, 10:21:56 PM
In my opinion, only simple bartering remains the solution to all currency issues.  It places importance primarily on the process of exchange, not on the products or a currency and thus facilitates healthy person-to-person communication.  I think civilization had it right to begin with and then currency came along and jacked the whole thing up (e.g. paper money is not important to me, but it's important to everyone else, so THEN it becomes important to me and displaces my values.  Bitcoin is no different).

And, it is also my opinion that the theory behind Bitcoin isn't that brilliant.  The brilliance came from putting the pieces together (i.e. taking the theory, creating a mathematical analogue of it, representing that analogue in a computer program, and marketing it) and having the motivation to actually do it without knowing if it would catch on.  I, along with many of you, also have many brilliant ideas but we simply don't try to fulfill them to their ends because we think they might fail.  If they fail, it's a waste of our damn time.  And I have objections to Bitcoin because I think it is weak in theory, but strong enough to 1.) Be better than traditional fiat currencies and 2.) Gain the respect of a significant number of people.  It's a currency for the at-least moderately wealthy and computer literate.  It is not a currency for the poor or the uneducated (I use uneducated in a very general sense here to represent those who will have trouble understanding it and would need to dedicate a very significant amount of time to do so).

that's copy-pasted from post above by "The Joint": https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37333.msg462367#msg462367

why are you doing this?

I'm happy to report to the thread that I just ordered my FPGA miner.

molecular, thank you very much! You won't be disappointed. Also, as one of our first customers, you locked in a 10% discount for life

Yeah, I know, thanks a lot for the discount. That really made the decision a lot easier.
11733  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trust No One on: August 19, 2011, 05:29:11 PM
I seriously got scammed on eBay last week. I know I was a complete idiot of trusting too much.  I purchased an iPad from eBay some time ago; the user claimed a friend shipped them out without tracking numbers. So I listened to his song and dance, and going on the belief that all people are good, I believed he would send me an iPad. Well, here I am 2 months later with no iPad and out $350. What a shame. The only thing I have is his phone number that he gave to me in an e-mail. I tried to search his number here just to check his identity. And no name is registered to that phone number.  That will be the last time that I'm gonna trust someone online.

Is there anything else I can do to get back my money? Should I contact ebay for this or paypal. I am not sure what am I gonna do now. I would appreciate your help guys.

Is this forum about scams of all sorts now? That's fucking sad!

You should contact ebay. If you payed using paypal, your chances of getting a chargeback done are good, I assume.

I'm happy to report to the thread that I just ordered my FPGA miner.

Both guys (Li and newMeat1) have been very helpful so far in providing me with documents I asked for (an invoice).

I'm now waiting for them to send me an order confirmation with payment instructions. I will pay using paypal, unfortunately, because that's safer for me.

So I'd say: probably ONLY 3 LEFT!

I'll keep you guys updated on how it goes and I hope Li and newMeat1 can build some confidence this way.

11735  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Custom FPGA Board for Sale! on: August 19, 2011, 07:06:16 AM
I would so buy one or two but $440 is a bit too much to invest in 100 Mhash. It would take a seriously long time to earn back that original investment. I just picked up a 5870 for $180 and that nets me 393 Mhash/s , so 3x the amount this board does at a more reasonable cost.

According to my calculations it would take  23.66 months to pay for this board - assuming btc prices stay at ~10.98.

It would probably take even longer if prices rise again, because that would attract a lot of gpu and increase difficulty. It might be faster if price falls to $1, because that would drive out power-inefficient mining and puts loads of pressure on difficulty. So this is actually insurance against price drop Wink
11736  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Custom FPGA Board for Sale! on: August 19, 2011, 06:57:13 AM
With the most recent program it gets 100 MHash/s and uses 6.8W of power.

How about 1 Ghash/s and 68W of power?
and <$500

How about world peace?
11737  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: August 18, 2011, 10:51:19 PM
Started off with a 100 hash card. now with 4x5830's.  For all of the great designs and setups that I have seen here, I am going to give you something quite opposite. This is in my basement with 2 5830's plugged in traditionally and then ribbon cables with another 2 5830's just laying ontop of the other cards with a small fan overtop.

for the love of god!

I don't understand why you have a trashcan.
11738  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Custom FPGA Board for Sale! on: August 18, 2011, 07:21:05 PM
Molecular: I can register the mail and then we'd be able to track it, I can't seem to find how much it'll cost to register everything, but I do know the base charges. Shouldn't cost more then USD$12 to get this packed and shipped to you registered.

$12 to ship a small package from USA to germany. That sounds too good to be true. Which service is that?

it seems all xilinx platform cables I can find on ebay.de (german site) are shipped from hongkong... maybe you could even get one for me and include it to save a little on shipping? I'd have to shell out $57 incl. shipping to get one myself.

Here's where we stand... if you buy a Platform cable on eBay, it will take 2 weeks to ship to you. We could buy it for you, but then we just have to ship it twice and there's no cost/time savings.

Ah, of course. Forgive me, for some reason I thought you were based in Asia and could get to the cable quicker. I'll look around if I can get it faster. How fast will shipping of the board be?

So, we need to cover our costs now. We want to get some boards out in the community for evaluation. At the same time, we don't want to screw our first buyers by charging a ridiculous amount, then undercutting that price by $50 or so in a month's time.

Here's the best solution I can come up with-- $440+shipping for the board. Buy your own Platform cable on eBay (it is a knockoff, but we use them- they work). If you ever decide to buy from us again, you get 10% off. This offer stands for our first 4 buyers.

Essentially, you trade a high cost right now for a much better bargain in the future. What do you think?

This is a fair offer. I've actually been thinking, maybe I should wait for better versions, but that is now out of the question.

Let me sleep over my decision, though, I've made the experience that it's better to sleep a night before making a sizeable purchase and let's figure out the payment and shipping details in pm tomorrow, ok?

I think he meant valid vanity addresses, i don't think that one passes more strict validation

We'll never know wether or not it's valid Wink
