Very interesting for those who speak German:

Quote from: zeit
Das System hinter Bitcoins wird seit 2007 von einer Hackergruppe entwickelt, die heute vom US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts aus operiert.

Quote from: translated_to_english
The system behind Bitcoins is being developed since 2007 by a group of hackers, which operates from Massachusetts nowadays.

What?

+1 awesome. Especially like the ending:

Money is trust in the system, be it the earth, the government, or the internet. So our question to you is this: 'who do you trust?'

11946  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why all the bitcoin haters? on: June 29, 2011, 12:58:22 PM
The key issue is that the early adopters have nearly all of the cards.

They have (had?) 1/3 of the money. 2/3 are still up for grab by anyone. (counting anyone who joined before now to be an early adopter)

Probably 1/3 of the 6 million that belonged to miners initially were sold to speculators and "normal" people wanting some bitcoins.
11947  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: June 28, 2011, 05:47:40 PM

sorry, can't seem to find it. Could you point out the thread for me?
11948  Economy / Currency exchange / tradebitcoin.com fixed (find local bitcoin traders) on: June 28, 2011, 03:24:49 PM
Just thought I'd let people know that http://tradebitcoin.com is back in working condition. It's a google mashup you can use to find local bitcoin exchangers.

I've been pegging the author for a while and he just got the problems fixed in 15 minutes Wink.

Should the map not show on first load, try shift-reloading.

I know the "exchange crisis" is over for now, but as a last resort, having local people to meet and exchange local currency for bitcoins or vice-versa still seems important to me.

I've entered myself a while back and 4 people contacted me via skype. I sold bitcoins to two of them. It was fun (meet at starbucks, send coins using ssh through starbucks wifi, cash on table).

One cool thing (in my view) of trading "cash 4 cash" locally in real life is that it's compeletely invisible to outsiders, because both transactions are pseudonymous/anonymous to the outside and only the trading parties know of the exchange even happening.

So, if you like, go ahead and enter your info on the site or find someone to trade with if you want to buy/sell some BTC.
11949  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [BETA] MTGox websocket API, testers wanted on: June 28, 2011, 08:47:39 AM
Looks like MtGox WebSockets broken after reopening - connection can be established but no data received.
Mark, are you going to fix it?

+1

also: I can't seem to be able to use the classic Trade API, either. Says something about a "bad token". Anyone know about that?
11950  Local / Mining (Deutsch) / Re: neuer deutschsprachiger Pool btc.x8s.de on: June 25, 2011, 07:19:47 PM

falls ja: output "BLOCK found, please check if pool announced a block"
  falls nein: weiter wie bisher

nicht wahr?
11951  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Pool oder Solo ? on: June 25, 2011, 07:03:53 PM
nun da mach ich nem pool ja um einiges mehr omg, wozu sich das solo risiko antuen wenn ich 50 tage für 50 BTC brauche.

im pool mache ich täglich ja mehr als 1 BTC bei 2.5 g/Hash

Solo is cooler, pool sicherer.

Faustregel: wenn "average time to find block" < "time until next difficulty increase" => mine solo

In deinem Fall also: 50 days < 14 days => mine in pool (always)
11952  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Is Useless Because It's Too Easy Too Get Robbed on: June 25, 2011, 06:51:43 PM
No one yet has answered this problem: Its too easy to get robbed. You send someone some bitcoins and they can just walk! It's just like posting cash to a stranger, totally stupid.
No-one posts cash to stranger, so no-one will send bitcoins! It's obvious!

In a face to face transaction, use cash - cus its anonymous.
In an internet transaction, use Paypal etc, cuz its the only way not to get robbed.

Add escrow to bitcoin and you've gained nothing now. The whole project is totally pointless!

Why can no-one give me a robust resolution. By robust, I mean not some juvenile, hand waving gibberish arguement.

You have a point.

I think there will be payment systems on top of bitcoin some day (google, maybe even paypal, visa come to mind), which offer chargeback, fast hassle-free payment and protection from theft to a certain degree.

Bitcoin is online gold, not many trade in gold nowadays, but it's used as store of value. Bitcoin might have similar fate with other currencies pegged to it.

Not a "robust solution", but maybe a direction to think?
11953  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC? on: June 25, 2011, 06:39:18 PM
No, last time I read the guy had it offline and backed up in multiple locations...

Still though if the value of btc crashes to 0 he's still screwed...

Not more screwed than the rest of us, though.

Yep..I'm willing to bet some BTC that he already cashed out a decent chunk of that. Tis all wild speculation, but I salute him for managing to carry the torch till the end.

What end?
11954  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does CPU matter? on: June 23, 2011, 06:31:45 PM
Hi,

I am considering building a dedicated mining rig and would like to know if a more powerful CPU has any effect on the hash rate performance vs. a less powerful one, ie. quad core vs dual core.  If CPU selection has little effect then I can save some cash by purchasing a base CPU.
I will be installing an hd6990.
Thanks

I have a very cheap board that cost me €48 including CPU (via c7): asrock pv530, I think... no problems, saves lots of power Wink

P.P.S. weusecoins video finally got it's mainstream TV spot (even if just outtakes), congratulations.

your probably talking about "mainstream english-speaking TV", right, because otherwise:

tagesschau is pretty mainstream Wink

maybe also the "czech CNN" piece (with slush in it) had outtakes of weusecoins, not sure: http://www.ct24.cz/vysilani/2011/06/05/211411058050022-20:00-horizont-ct24/

"long pieces of computer algorithms" has to be my favourite all time definition of bitcoins  Cheesy

took me a while... they're talking about the blockchain! hilarious!
11958  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone spamming the MtGox userlist with TradeHill referral spam on: June 20, 2011, 12:42:20 PM
well, counting 3 different mtgox-leak-related spam-emails up to now. this sux!

In addition to the one already mentioned, I received:

  • We Accept Bitcoins - GBVault - this one has the recipient list in "To" header, damn moron!
  • Was this the last straw with Mt Gox? - another tradehill referrer.

Sad
11959  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone spamming the MtGox userlist with TradeHill referral spam on: June 20, 2011, 12:37:38 PM
I think I've worked out who this person is who sent the emails. For obvious reasons I wont name and shame, but I must say that wether the intentions where good or bad. Not cool.

His intentions are clear: make money by referring people to tradehill.

The other stuff about "letting everyone know" is bullshit, because mtgox already did that.

This is very lowly behaviour. Shame on him.
11960  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone spamming the MtGox userlist with TradeHill referral spam on: June 20, 2011, 12:33:56 PM
I was OK with one. But I got six of the same e-mail. If you're going to e-mail all the users in the leaked database like a badass 31337 Internet hero, do it properly.

One is not ok. 15 (which I got) is not ok at all. What the hell good is it to send it more than once???
