The shipment of soybeans to China became the first commodity deal to use blockchain technology

Soybean shipment from the US to China completed using blockchain platform.
A recent soybean shipment from the US to China has become "the first full agricultural commodity transaction using a blockchain platform," according to a consortium of banks and trading businesses involved.The deal involved recent agricultural trading businesses Louis Dreyfus Company and Shandong Bohi Industry.

This shipment was carried out on the Easy Trading Connect blockchain platform developed by the banks (ING, Societe Generale, and ABN Amro), which digitises sales contracts such as documents and letters of credit.

There are even more news about commodity trading coming from London. Few businesses there have announced successful pilots and early-stage trials of projects using blockchain technology.

Китай и США заключили первую товарную сделку на блокчейне
Недавняя поставка сои из США в Китай стала «первой полной сельскохозяйственной товарной сделкой, использующей платформу blockchain», согласно консорциуму банков и торговых предприятий.
Американское агропредприятию Louis Dreyfus впервые использовало блокчейн-платформу Easy Trading Connect (ETC) для продажи груза соевых бобов китайской компании Shandong Bohi Industry.  Блокчейн-платформу предоставили банки банки ING, Societe Generale и ABN Amro.
Стоит отметить, что платформа ETC значительно упрощает и ускоряет торговые операции. В частности, она оцифровывает документы, такие как договоры купли-продажи, аккредитивы, и сокращает потребность в юридическом сопровождении сделки. По словам группы разработчиков, технология позволила ускорить проводимые сделки в пять раз.

Very popular misconception about Bitcoin tha it is a distributed public ledger or something to that effect.  In fact, it is not. 

Bitcoin is a decentralized replicated public ledger.  Decentralized means that it does not live on a centralized server: anybody can in principle add to it.  Replicated means that it is copied in full in a lot of places. 

Distributed means that parts of it put in different place.  There is actually a very big difference.  Replication means it is fast to read data for everybody.But it also means that it’s expensive to write data.  Distributed means that it is fast to read and write data that is “close to” you, but it takes a long time – might even be impossible – to read/write data that is not.  The replicated nature of the blockchain means that it is fast to see how many Bitcoins you (or anybody else) have, but takes forever to spend them.

Канадское Правительство использует блокчейн сети Ethereum для учета грантов

Канадское правительство запустило тестовый проект по изучению использования технологии блокчейн в обеспечении прозрачности данных о правительственных контрактах, грантах и взносах. Для этого Национальный научно-исследовательский (National Research Council, NRC) совет Канады использует платформу Catena на базе блокчейна Ethereum.

Когда NRC вручает грант, информация помещается в блокчейн эфириума и ее можно просмотреть на сайте платформы.

В своём блоге NRC пишет:
Технология блокчейн обеспечивает максимальную прозрачность и доверие, создавая дивный новый мир для организаций, которые стремятся вести прозрачный бизнес. Canada to Use the Ethereum Blockchain to Track Grant Money

The Canadian government has launched a trial project aimed at researching how blockchain technology might enhance transparency for data on government contracts, grants and payments. The National Research Council (NRC) is using the Catena Blockchain Suite, which is built on the Ethereum blockchain.

When the NRC creates a grant, the information is stored on the Ethereum blockchain and can be accessed on the platform's site.

As the NRC writes in its blog:
"Blockchains provide the ultimate in transparency and trust, making this technology a brave new world for organizations that strive to conduct transparent business. These are early days yet, but the experiment is expected to provide constructive insight into the potential for blockchain technology and how it may be used for more open and transparent function of public programs."

Bitcoin Misconception: No Inflation

There's a popular opinion in the Bitcoin community that the world’s first cryptocurrency has no inflation (as if that were something good).

Where does Bitcoin come from? It’s mined by thousands of rigs all over the world.

And that’s inflation right there. At this time, there's nearly 17 million BTC in circulation (although around 4 million of this amount has been lost, which has a serious effect on the exchange rate), and mining produces 12.5 new BTC nearly every 10 minutes. 

That’s a total of 1,800 a day or 657,000 a year, which means an inflation of around 4% right there, whereas most western countries have an inflation of around 2%. These simple calculations prove that Bitcoin has inflation and it's rather remarkable that so few people have noticed.

13 января, для поклонников цифрового арта и ценителей мемов прошла выставка в небольшом помещении на 23-й улицы Нью-Йоркского Манхэттена, чтобы поучаствовать в аукционе по продаже изображений лягушонка Пепе — мема, который с недавнего времени распространяется на блокчейн.

Аукцион отличается тем, что картины с Пепе покупаются и продаются вместе с токенами, а право собственности отслеживается в блокчейне. Каждый экземпляр привязан к уникальному цифровому токену, который доказывает его подлинность. В 2016 году разработчик Джо Луни создал Rare Pepe Wallet, основную платформу для покупки и продажи мемов.

Торги стартовали с набора трёх редких пепсов, один из которых отсылает к картине Сальвадора Дали «Постоянство памяти», но с растаявшими лягушками вместо часов. Набор был продан за 12 000 единиц Pepe Cash — основного актива платформы (всего в обороте 700 млн.), что эквивалентно $720 на момент публикации Самая дорогая картина аукциона “Homer-Pepe” сошла с молотка за $38 500

Art and Blockchain: Rare Pepe Sold at Auction for $38500

On 13 January, an exhibition was held in a small space on 23rd Street in Manhattan for digital art fans and meme enthusiasts. There, attendees participated in an auction of images of Pepe the Frog, a meme that has recently been spread via blockchain.

The auction was significant in that the depictions of Pepe were bought and sold along with tokens, with ownership tracked on a blockchain. Every image is tied to a unique digital token that proves its authenticity. In 2016 developer Joe Looney created Rare Pepe Wallet, which is the main platform for buying and selling this meme,

The bidding started with a set of three Rare Pepes, one of which pays homage to Salvador Dali's The Persistence of Memory, but with melting frogs instead of clocks. The set was sold for 12,000 units of Pepe Cash, the platform's main asset, of which there are 700 million; at the time this was equal to approximately $720. The most expensive piece, Homer Pepe, sold for $38,500.

The New York art community reacted positively to this convergence of art, blockchain and memes. In the future, the organizers plan to carry out events not just for those attending the exhibition, but for art lovers online as well.

It's worth mentioning that the first cryptocurrency meme, Dogecoin, recently reached a capitalization of $2 billion, something that worries its creator, Jackson Palmer.
