121  Other / Beginners & Help / App I made bitcoin switcher on: June 26, 2011, 05:59:37 AM
Thought id share an app iv been using/made.
I mine in a smaller pool as well as a large one. Since I dont want all my time going on the small pool for what could take days/weeks to get a pay out I made this app. It looks at the stats that most pools provide with a api.
It looks at what your expected pay out is then if its above the threshold it will switch to your other pool.

I use it because I only want to aim for 0.50 on my smaller pool but still want to get regular bitcoins from the larger one.

On the setting page there is 7 text boxs here is what each one does.

API URL1 = the smaller pool you want to mine.
API URL2 = the larger pool you want to switch too.

Miner1 = Shell command to switch to smaller mining pool.
Miner2 = shell command to switch to larger mining pool.

Refresh rate = How long before re-downloading the stats page AKA checking when to switch miners I recommend 30 min so you dont spam there api and so you get a decent amount more then your aiming for so you speed more time in the smaller pool before returning.

Offset1 = how many " deep is the expected payout of the smaller pool.
Offset2 = how many " deep is the expected payout of the larger pool.

Example from BTC guild would be
{"user":"confirmed_rewards":0.01080205,"unconfirmed_rewards":0.00000000,"estimated_rewards":0.01229383,"payouts":94.49},"workers"

If you count the " there are 8 so that would be your offset.
It filters out the : and , but iv only tested it on a few pools yet so dont know if theres any that stick other stuff in.

Then on the main page there is text box that says "coins to aim for in miner1:" This is how many coins to aim for. If the smaller pool is below this number it switches to it, If its above this number it switches to the larger pool.

Im still stability testing this version. Its written in vb.net 08 and here is the source so far

It includes the poclbm miner iv been using since it seems to be the fastest one iv found.

The real deal would be to find a way to generate bitcoins in a secure way by solving useful calculations, such as raw data coming from chemical computation grids, or collected data in particle accelerators and so on. I'm not saying that reversing hashes is totally useless (it IS useful because it allows to build the bitcoin network!), but switching to more useful calculations would be better for sure. Problem is, I can just have a glimpse of the MANY security implications of this method: working on not-totally-random data raises so many potential attack windows that the waste of electricity is probably the last problem bitcoin would meet in the near future...

So a seti@home that you get payed for.

Doubt solor power would be cost effective since its the most expensive one to create power and only works half the time, Hydro or wind would be a more likly source but then the start up costs make it non-profitable for a few years and even longer with maintenance costs, Would be cheaper for them to just buy it.

But with there vast computer power and embending it in there programes they could get a lot of processing power.
124  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Overclocking software on: June 25, 2011, 05:37:56 AM
Definitely MSI Afterburner. I've used Rivatuner before and I think Afterburner is better.

Afterburner would only work for overclocking for me. Setting the memory underclocked had no real effect on it. Using rivatuner on the memory worked tho.

Altho lowering the memory to 600mhz only lowered the temp 2 degrees and 2mh/s faster.

Its been hard enough to get the amount of posts I have now with out just making spam posts that don't contribute anything.
Eventually ill get board and leave this forum and im sure a lot of other valid members will do so as well.

Maybe a better way to get rid of unwated users would be a knowledge test or proof in some other way.

A CPU botnet would = weak hash rate.
But if it was a GPU botnet then that would turn out some impressive numbers if they got a lot of computer in on it.

Only real problem will be, Easy to spot since youll hear the fans on your computer going faster and it will be noticable in task manger and the general slowing down of your computer.

A GPU one would be a bit harder to spot apart from the fan being louder but any one with a decent GPU will eather be smart enough to notice or will be using it for games so it will be noticed that way.

Thats going to take awhile since theres not really anything of value in this section so its hard to add to it.
128  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Overclocking software on: June 25, 2011, 04:07:18 AM
MSI Afterburner is best one I found, Or Rivatuner.
Look up on google how to use unofficaloverclock when using afterburner so you can get past the artificial limit.
129  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyone had a fire !?!? on: June 25, 2011, 04:00:05 AM
A few years ago I had an AMD processor catch fire.. It can happen, more likely it'll be a problem with the power supply, but as long as you have a smoke alarm and insurance, you'll be fine Smiley
pics or it didn't happen

Not sure how a CPU, even without a heatsink can start a fire. there's nothing flammable near the CPU, and you'll need crazy high temperatures (for a CPU) for a fire to start.

+1 unless there was that much dust in the cooler and on the mobo.

Looks nice. If you need more content there is a wiki comparing the hardware already.
But IMO the site should of been created a month back and as such it wont get as much popularity as it would of.

So I could leave my computer running 24/7 and nothing bad would happen? I tend to turn it off when I go out of the house cos I'm paranoid.

Just check the temps arent too high and the fans arnt getting blocked or making screatching sounds like they are going to fail and it should be all good. Had mine on 3 days so far.
132  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: POLL: What name would you give to the smallest unit of bitcoin (0.00000001)? on: June 24, 2011, 06:28:07 AM
nanobit
133  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyone had a fire !?!? on: June 24, 2011, 05:49:18 AM
I was thinking about this last night and came to the conclusion that it would be very difficult for a major fire.
Most likly thing to happen would be the PSU/GFX/CPU goes pop then the computer turns off.

If it does turn into a fire then its sealed inside the metal case and there isnt exactly that much fuel inside there for the fire to consume so it would burn out quickly.
134  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: SO if people sell off their coins the price will drop and......... on: June 24, 2011, 05:46:11 AM
From my understanding of reading other threads on here.

The system works by aiming for 8 blocks per hour to be found. If there are more then that found the it raises the difficulty at the next interval. But if less were found it would lower it.

Selling all your coins will make the value of them drop but it depends who they are sold to. Since its demand and supply.
If every ones selling people will be willing to sell them for cheaper. If no ones selling then they will be harder to find and will have more value.
135  Other / Beginners & Help / Hello and mh/s question. on: June 24, 2011, 04:45:09 AM
Hello, First of all im going to say this site has a ton load of information and has provided me few hours reading so far, so thank you for that. Wish I had sighed up early then id already be over the 4 hours waiting limit.

Next im going to ask what sort of speeds should I be expecting out of a 6850. Iv got one clocked at 800mhz core and 600mhz mem and im getting 258-260 MH/s with a modified version of pocblm

Iv had a look on the hardware comparison and the speeds on that match up with my cross fire 6870 rig but for some reason this 6850 seems to be pumping more hashes then the comparable ones on the list.
