121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I need advice from experts on: March 12, 2018, 06:12:41 PM
Should I consider buying a hardware wallet?
Air-gapped machines with offline signing are considered safer, but they require some research and knowledge. However, both are considered very safe. You have far more security than one using a software wallet on his everyday use laptop. The benefit of a hardware wallet over air-gapped machines is it's support for multiple altcoins.

I'm currently using Windows for wallet, should I switch to Linux?
Linux has a smaller attack surface than Windows, as statistics show that Windows users are far more often targeted for malware. Although you're fine to use it for your offline machine, it wouldn't have cons compared to Linux.

What additional measures should I take?
- Make sufficient backups including paper backups.
- Use good passwords, the more characters you use, the better.

I personally really like Armory as a wallet, but it requires you to run a full node.
122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why did people get involved in bitconnect? on: March 12, 2018, 05:15:14 PM
Humans are born greedy, at least most of us. I am pretty sure that the people who participated knew the risks but ignored them because they knew there were people making tons of money by doing nothing and these people didn't want to miss that boat. Sadly for them, there doubts became reality.
123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Better way to improve clean knowledge about bitcoin? on: March 12, 2018, 05:08:02 PM
Read the Satoshi paper at https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-paper, it's available in multiple languages. The paper is actually pretty complicated, so you might want to have a deeper explanation including the basics. For that, you should take a look at Master Bitcoin by Andreas M. Antonopoulos. Most aspects of the satoshi paper will make sense after you read that.
124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bcash fanboys learned the value of BTC in these hard times. on: March 12, 2018, 01:36:05 PM
I see that they are very organized, but they will fail because "battling" with your own crowd is always disastrous.

Just take a look at @bitcoin twitter account at https://twitter.com/Bitcoin
The account is not bitcoin, it is bcash. Still bad mouthing bitcoin and promoting bcash, not understanding that we are in the same boat. If nocoiners sink it, we will all go down. I will definitely write this on their account, and I invite you to do the same.
https://twitter.com/Bitcoin/status/971668884074856448
That's actually the dangerous aspect of Bitcoin Cash, their community (Including Roger Ver) is quite rich and they are trying to use Bitcoin's name by buying everything. Besides the Bitcoin twitter, they also own bitcoin.com, /r/btc and seem to have some interest in a lot of exchanges and block-explorers (blockexplorer.com). I also read that Cobra-bitcoin might be a danger, because he is co-owner of the domain bitcoin.org and is lately tweeting about bitcoin cash philosophy.
It is an old technique to get monopoly, actually very effective. But it works at the cost of real community driven projects like Bitcoin (core).

I understand that you're upset, but the title you chose for this thread is not going to help. You would have had a bigger chance if you just asked them politely to recover your account, including the signed message.
126  Other / Off-topic / Re: How wars can affect Bitcoin? on: March 11, 2018, 10:52:51 PM
A war will certainly affect Bitcoin if the transatlantic communications cable or similar is targeted for a breach. That means that no internet communication can happen and will result in worthless Bitcoin, at least for that time. The war could possibly even include EMPs, which means that all data gets erased and so does the blockchain, assuming that it is deployed in a big range. But the same can be said about banks, as I don't think that they still have physical written copies of their database. The only thing that will actually have value during a war is gold and other precious metals.
127  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Do you REALLY trust hardware wallets? on: March 11, 2018, 09:51:23 PM
... Armory+cheapo computer...

It's a hardware wallet with even better security and validity, but at a fraction of the cost.
Until you factor in the need for a (non-pruned) full node required for the online portion of your Armory setup and the space/bandwidth requirements that involves.

As opposed to plugging a HW wallet into your cheapo computer (or even your mobile phone with a $2 OTG cable).

There are pros/cons to both setups... but honestly, I believe HW wallets made air-gapped offline/online two computer setups pretty much obsolete.
You're right, although HDD space has become relatively cheap lately. But I believe Electrum also offers the same functionality (offline signer) without the need for a full node, I just prefer Armory. I'm lucky to have my full node running at my parents home with 300Mbps internet. Maybe I'm just a little too paranoid.
128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in darknet on: March 11, 2018, 09:29:52 PM
Most electronics on the darknet are stolen, is that really what you want? There are multiple electronic webshops on the clearweb that accept Bitcoin, for example Newegg.com. The darknet brings also more risk compared to clearnet businesses, as they are anonymous it's easy for them to scam you.
130  Local / Nederlands (Dutch) / Re: Amory probleem met online komen on: March 11, 2018, 07:19:04 PM
Beste lezers,

131  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Do you REALLY trust hardware wallets? on: March 11, 2018, 06:17:48 PM
I don't really trust hardware wallets, that's why I don't own one. My main reason is the lack of open-source for example, Ledger wallet is only partial open-source. That means that there is still some code running on the hardware that you can't verify. Besides that, they are quite expensive compared to air-gapped machines that only require an old PC. I have more fate in a computer, without internet capability running a wallet compiled from source (Armory) than pre-configured hardware. Armory allows you to sign transactions on your air-gapped machine and managing your wallet on an online PC without sign access (watching-only).
They certainly add a level of convenience, especially for all of the coins the support.
That's is certainly a benefit for people who store altcoins. But for my personal situation not, as I only store Bitcoin and some Litecoin.

Also, a ledger nano s for example is much cheaper than any laptop/very cheap desktop you'd find, I don't think it's fair to assume that everybody would have an old computer lying around.
Even the old computers that schools have, will run an offline version of Armory. I bet you can get these for less than 10 bucks on a flea market or elsewhere. Also Armory has support for single board computers like the Raspberry Pi, that can be bought for $25. It's a hardware wallet with even better security and validity, but at a fraction of the cost.

Hardware wallets are somewhere between airgapped computers and encrypted wallet files.
It definitely is, but I don't trust it as much as a self-compiled software.

133  Economy / Services / Re: [OPEN] | 🔥 Coinpayments.net Signature Campaign 🔥 | 100% SegWit | on: March 11, 2018, 02:35:44 PM
presumably you post a lot in the mining section? i'm not sure i've ever had a post there that wasn't nuked by the moderator.

what moderator? the OP here?

i post there some..but ALL my 60 posts I made and another negative 11 posts...no way....something else seems to be dorked

I went back and counted posts (elminating speculation and this thread) and ended up with 44 posts that should count....dated from

the last payout...I also show NO posts from the 22nd of Feb to the 27th of Feb ...I also know that is not correct....I see to remember this happening iike 3 years ago also on bitcointalk....anyway...

so something else is going on it seems....all I really can do is go to profile and count the posts since the last payout before

I started to get negative numbers backwards and scratch my head on how I have negative 11 posts from the last payout Sad

brad

Moderators seem to be deleting threads regarding the same topic as a thread that already exist. I have done some searching on Google for topics that I replied on but didn't show up in my post history and they already exist. So that means that people are creating threads for questions, without Googling if the question already exist.
134  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is there any way to import Bitcoin private keys from TXT file on: March 10, 2018, 06:44:39 PM
But with Elecrtrum I can not import more than 30 addresses. When I add more than 30 keys those address won't display at address TAB
Bitcoin Core allows it, according to deepceleron. He describes here how to do it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1344625.msg13709228#msg13709228

Formatting can be done in Notepad++, using plugins like TextFX.

136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin! yes Bitcoin Cash! yes Bitcoin Gold! no why? on: March 10, 2018, 06:02:46 PM
I saw many or every person about Bitcoin and BTCCash why people are not talking about Bitcoin Gold?
Major sites and ICOs are also accepting payment in BTC and in BTCCash but not showing interest in Bitcoin Gold.

Is Bitcoin Gold has no future?

The same story with bgold.
Isn't Theymos the founder and administrator of blockexplorer.com? It wonders me why he would promote Bitcoin Cash, while he seems to support Bitcoin Core on here.

-Edit: Never mind, Liraz Siri took over the ownership in 2010.
137  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Confirm BTC transaction on: March 10, 2018, 05:35:30 PM
Hi , can anyone confirm my transaction please?

Here is the hash 62e9b45ae8789189d2bfca5b615aee356bf7ca99bce9d166b87d1e2fa42e9836

I accidentally added a low fee

Thanks

There are websites dedicated for this purpose like blockchain.info

As per the current stats, it is still unconfirmed https://blockchain.info/tx/62e9b45ae8789189d2bfca5b615aee356bf7ca99bce9d166b87d1e2fa42e9836

And you are trying to send 1 BTC by paying a fee of $0.29 , I think this will take a lot of time. Better see the current fees required for fast transaction and add that much fee. You will now remain worried about the transaction till it passes through.
The transaction is confirmed. kmorman92, please close the thread in the left corner.
138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Where to buy Coins not listed on exchange yet, or tokens of recent ICOs ? on: March 10, 2018, 04:23:15 PM
You don't need an exchange to trade, but it makes it much more easier. It's always possible to buy from people that already have the coin you're looking for, but to find someone can be hard, especially when there is less demand. But PoW (proof-of-work) coins can be earned by mining, where you trade your computing on-time for coins.
139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Confirm BTC transaction on: March 10, 2018, 03:16:37 PM
Hy brother you should be carefull about the fees wend you make transaction bicouse now maybe you gona lose this money  Shocked

If you don't rebroadcast the transaction, it will be dropped from the mempool after 3 days. That means that the transaction is cancelled and your funds will be spendable in your wallet again.

140  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best safe for storing Bitcoin paper wallets? on: March 10, 2018, 03:06:00 PM
I would rather store my piece of paper in some hidden location, for example behind your base frame of your bed. When you decide to store it in a safe, a burglar definitely knows that you got something valuable to hide, while they wouldn't search for a piece of paper when they don't know that you own Bitcoins. A safe can also be stolen if the burglar has enough time to get it out of your house and later be dismantled.

Yes. I'm better off with something stealth that will divert the attention of the robber when he breaks into my home. Since cryptocurrencies can be stored nearly anywhere you can imagine (all you need is the keys), then they could be hidden from prying eyes. I'm thinking of getting a diversion safe in the form of an AJAX can. I'll place the keys there in a piece of paper and put the can where other AJAX cans are to hide my crypto balances from theft. Perhaps, that's the safest best so far for my Bitcoin and altcoin paper wallets.
That's a a really unique but presumable effective way of storing your Bitcoin and altcoins. I'm pretty sure that there is no thief that is going to steal your cleaning products.
