121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Serious situation with TradeHill imminent on: July 03, 2011, 12:44:59 AM
If it were any country, I would believe it to be australia. And for that reason I suggest that any exchange operators stear clear away from that hell hole of a "Democracy".

They literally ban more than twice the number of video games than the PRC for example.

You cannot purchase what the gov't deems to be "hardcore" pornography.

When I wanted to place bets on Betfair's "Australian" market... basically any bets even RELATED TO australia (placed anywhere in the world) need to be tracked by the australian gambling authority. So I had to fax them individually (on top of faxing all of my info to Betfair) tons of extra information because they are extremely bureaucratic like that.

I even had a friend who swears by not doing business in Australia because of many deals "gone south" many moons ago.

Seriously, be careful doing business in Aussy Land.

Just what the "Bitcoin Gods" called for?
123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Im getting excited. on: July 03, 2011, 12:38:11 AM
And if you sign up within the next 15 minutes.... (our operators are standing by waiting to take your call)

I will throw in a SECOND sign up to CBX, ABSOLUTELY FREE!!

That's TWO signups to CBX for the price of ONE!
124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wall Street Journal Frontpage Ad - 5000 Bitcoins on: July 03, 2011, 12:36:09 AM
As much as my wallet would love to see a Bitcoin ad on the front page of a major newspaper...

My brain hates the idea.
125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [THEORY] Bitcoin "Gods" Are Attempting To Even Out The Exchange Markets on: July 03, 2011, 12:34:55 AM
I am was bothered that somebody herds bitcoin too.

Get along, little doggie!

In a sense, that what the early adopters could do with their market power.
126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mtgox hit $2.99 on: July 02, 2011, 12:31:31 PM
Thats enough for me lol

I think I will open an exchange for Canadian dollars.
I will look into what kind of accounts will be necessary to facilitate deposit/withdrawl in Canada and maybe make an exchange site.

If I were to take the time to setup a secure exchange, how many people would be interested in trading BTC with Canadian dollars??
I would like to see a Canadian exchange, volume is a huge factor though.

Not to be rude, but I am a network security specialist. I am well aware of what would be required in setting up a secure exchange both technically and legally.

Really depends.  CaVirtEx is in beta for quite some time; I guess it would have to depend on what you can offer compared to them

Build it guys. Canada needs it.

Canada already has a GREAT secure, working, cheap (you can withdraw cash to almost any bank with your email address in just 7 hours for $6.50, or $3 directly to a bank account).

They just re-opened their doors today after finalizing all the legal stuff there was to take care of.

I just deposited a bunch a few BTC and everything is going great.

I do still encourage XRcode to build his own exchange however. We can always use another!
127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [THEORY] Bitcoin "Gods" Are Attempting To Even Out The Exchange Markets on: July 02, 2011, 12:26:30 PM
Just like "they" did with the pools.

When somebody got out of line (when a pool got too large of a hashing share percentage compared to the network) then they would be miraculously attacked, DDoSd, taken offline, whatever... while lots of the smaller pools received no beatings.

Now it seems as though pool DDoSing has died down for the most part as nobody really has a large enough share of the network hashing rate to warrant anybody to worry as far as I know.

These last few glitches with MtGox don't add up to a whole lot other than a financial company making some very very strange (almost unexplainable) errors that inevitably end up driving more market share to places like TradeHill.com, CaVirtex.com, Etc...

Maybe we should just do as they want us to do to speed this whole thing along and stop dragging Bitcoin's credibility through the mud (by making MtGox repeatedly come up with odd/random errors).

128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wall Street Journal Frontpage Ad - 5000 Bitcoins on: July 02, 2011, 12:10:27 PM
Like I've said in your other threads - advertisement is not what the bitcoin community needs. We get plenty of publicity from newspapers, and we can barely handle that.
You have my attention. I'm very interested. What should we do? Build businesses?

I agree w/ Garrett.

Building services that make it easier to learn about and get started using Bitcoin is what's needed imo.

I agree.  Before bitcoin gets a lot more attention the whole way one manages one's bitcoins needs revision.  First, owned bitcoins need to be easier to secure (i.e. wallet encryption).  Additionally, there needs to be a warning when you install the bitcoin client that the user is solely responsible for the security of their own bitcoins, and some suggestions should be made in that prompt.  People need to be able to, at the very least, securely spend their own bitcoins from their cell phone.  Those are just a few things that need to be in place before we go around proselytizing bitcoin.

Agreed.
129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silver stackers hate Bicoin? on: July 02, 2011, 12:06:54 PM
I think many of them feel bad about not diving in when bitcoin was <$1 so they come up with excuses too convince themselves bitcoin is a bad thing.

This is true for a lot of my friends. Anyone who is invested (most of them) is all excited about the idea. Anybody who was really interested and excited (but didn't have the money to invest) is now souring to the idea. Fortunately, not that many people in the world know about Bitcoin yet!
130  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Difficulty changes in the middle of difficulty on: July 02, 2011, 11:43:03 AM
BX is now displaying the previous difficulty level, tho what i said was true and it changed for a while.

That is quite odd indeed.
131  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Announce] getblockchain.com on: July 02, 2011, 04:13:57 AM
Just curious... a block chain alone could never really be "tampered" with right? I mean if it was anything other than the official block chain, the client wouldn't recognize anything... right?
132  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need 2 BTC - have moneybookers... on: July 02, 2011, 04:12:23 AM
Go to a trading exchange.

If that trading exchange doesn't offer service to your country or type of payment, ask them why.

They probably want to know.
133  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Overclocking Sapphire 5830 on: July 02, 2011, 04:09:04 AM
Load up windows on the system (if it is not already).

Download and install RBE.

Edit the BIOS through RBE and flash the BIOS of the card using winatiflash (it is all explained on the RBE FAQ page).

You simply need to change the high/red level settings on one of the gpu core clocks to exactly what you want it to be while mining. I recomment 925core/300mem for good stability.
134  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Controlling multiple terminal windows with SSH on: July 02, 2011, 04:04:52 AM
You have 3 terminal windows running in a desktop version of ubuntu, I assume?

You cannot SSH directly into a terminal window so far as I know, but you can ssh directly into a "machine" and then open up as many terminal windows as you would like in the background using screen.

You have to have openssh installed and port 22 open on the machine you want to log in with. Then you can simply dial up the ip address (with putty or another ssh client of your choice).

Type screen to enter screen. Hit CTRL+C to "create" a new window. You can make as many as you would like.
135  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin memory usage on: July 02, 2011, 03:47:08 AM
bitcoin/bitcoind uses almost 150mb RAM and the memory usage rises every day.
Any way to lower the usage or am i just doing something wrong? Guessing it has something to do with latest block being stored in memory or something, is there a way to prevent this?

Thanks, Daniel.

What OS are you running?

What version of bitcoin/bitcoind are you running?

Try upgrading both to the latest versions first and report back. The Bitcoin client is still in beta/testing mode, remember. We still have a long way to go before a "1.0 final" release.
136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: No confirmations to Mt. Gox on: July 02, 2011, 03:45:19 AM
Hey guys,

I sent 10 BTC to my Mt. Gox account about 2 days ago, and right now it still has 0 confirmations...should I be worried?

Just because you are showing 0 confirmations does not mean that mtgox is showing 0 confirmations.

Try logging into your mtgox account, it should be there by now.
137  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is it at all possible to associate an IP address with a Bitcoin address? on: July 01, 2011, 09:01:54 AM
I wouldn't want my IP address in anyway linked to any Bitcoin addresses.

You and me both, brother!
138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Pushpool - Tech Support on: July 01, 2011, 06:18:15 AM
QUESTION: is /tmp/shares.log and /tmp/request.log entirely necessary? Under what circumstances would one require those files? I assume they would become quite massive in a short amount of time.

Send SIGHUP to the process, to re-open the logs (such as after rotation or deletion).

Why even create them at all though to begin with I guess is my question? If you are already making exact copies of them in your mysql database that you can clean by "timestamp" much easier?

If I simply remove those two lines from the server.json file, is everything going to explode?
139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Are your transactions not showing up? Read Here! on: July 01, 2011, 05:57:39 AM
Felling worried because of your transactions is not showing up?
Well maybe you should download the blockchain! Cheesy

You might ask how do i download this chain?
It happens automatically! Cheesy just wait!
You can see how much you have downloaded is the down right corner of your client:

(this pic might be outdated, the current block count is available here: http://blockexplorer.com/q/getblockcount )

You will not receive any transactions before you have downloaded the whole blockchain.
It is most likely why your transactions don't show up.

(MODS: Feel free to sticky it!)

I love the blatant attempt at scoring some free bitcoins for providing the answer to a super simple (and common) problem. Good work.

On a side note I would like to discourage this sort of thing (helping people only for the sake of getting something in return).

If the forums turn into that by default we will all become bankers, not bitcoiners.
140  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Mining computer turns off after 16-18 hours on: July 01, 2011, 05:54:19 AM
System updates perhaps (but you would expect the computer to restart if that were the case).

Perhaps you have bad power coming from your wall? How old is your building/area?
