121  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitfury a threat? on: October 27, 2015, 02:35:05 AM
Not a threat at this point.  You have chips from Spon-doolies, KNC, Antminer and Avalon.   This is pretty decent competition at this stage.  The bigger issue may be centralization of mining capacity over time into these large mining interests along with a few independent players.
Definitely, this is what we need to worry about but I guess we will always get their scraps of last generation from all the big players and that might be enough to make the home market a slice of the mining pie.

Trouble is the power density or the number of mining boxes keeps increasing.  It has already basically over-run most residential power grids and almost all commercial spaces will still need upgrades.  Yes scraps will be had but at that point, it might not be the best idea.  I don't know what if anything will turn the tide.  At least Antminer has publicly stated it will continue to support the small miner market.  I don't see this continuing to 14nm or smaller.
122  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Yet another potential money-pit 14nm project on: October 26, 2015, 08:11:40 PM
The new 14nm miner is due January 2016 not Q4. BW is already pre-selling B-Eleven hosted mining at less than half the cost of S7 you can read the details here.

You must mean February 2016.  Let us never forget that China shuts down for the month of January for Chinese New Year.  Let us never forget.
123  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Spondolies SP50 on: October 26, 2015, 08:09:45 PM
One thing you can say about Spondoolies, their customer service is better than all the other manufacturers combined.

We'll see if this continues now they are Zvi-less.

Of course your only insight is forum members, the large majority of sales were to operations off the forum, from what I have seen the service was still great, until spare parts were exhausted.

I'm not referring to on or off forum, I'm referring to staff. They had one sales / marketing / lots of other important stuff guy (Gadi) and one SW development / why isn't it working / super tech support guy (Zvi). When you lose one of your allstars its always a challenge to replace.

Dogie, you are right on this.  You, yourself is a testament to how important good support is.  Especially when dealing with technical products coming from startups that don't have this background.   Support can make or break products.  We have come to seriously appreciate good support.
124  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hardware Prospects for 2015-2016 Mining on: October 26, 2015, 07:51:44 PM
The prospects for the home miner is not good.   Centralization is increasing along with the infrastructure requirement (case & point - SP50).  I think we will see a rise in the private funding of mining cooperatives or mining royalty trusts.  KNC I believe is no longer selling to the public and I think Bitfury followed the same path.

126  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: rumors of 3.5Th antminer S7 "lite" on: October 26, 2015, 07:34:24 PM
Honestly I believe it as it would push a lot of chips and units and it is something the home miners want, would love to see this and the avalon release (and possibly the bw miner), going to be a great generation!

This assertion seems reasonable.
127  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Purchasing One 2TH/s Miner OR Multiple 500GH/s Miners on: October 26, 2015, 07:32:05 PM
Usually I would say more miners so you have more options to energize miners on a power grid.   Larger miners tend to use multiple circuits to power it and if takes say 15 amps of your 20, you can lose those 2-3 amps because how miners power usage fluctuates in a range and having another small miner on that circuit will likely lead to thrown breakers.   With more smaller miners, you can come up with more arrangements that can help you utilize more of your circuits.  Load balancing has been an important part of our strategy to increase efficiency.
128  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: rumors of 3.5Th antminer S7 "lite" on: October 26, 2015, 03:10:28 AM
Do we have any sources on this rumor.  I have people that also would like this to be confirmed or denied.

Wow talk about them being serious about the warehouse major miner market, this isn't even possible for any hobbyist to own.

This is the direction it is going.  This unit is only for data-center mining for the most part.  I believe people will need to pool larger bits of capital to cover the costs of running a mining operation in the future.  I have steadily seen my client's miner count get larger and larger.   The SP50 is an interesting machine and really took its design philosophy from the Cisco Blade chassis.

130  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How many units of each type of ASIC Bitcoin miner exists in the world? on: October 22, 2015, 06:24:50 PM
Just wondering how many units of each miner might exist in the world.

Looking at the Antminer S1, did Bitcoin really sell that many units of that miner? It was their first miner and they probably produced a small amount before the new BM1841 chip came out (Antminer S3)

It seems that the S2,S3,S4,S5 sold in large numbers.

The SP equipment unless  its the Sp20, also sold in small numbers.

The Avalon you rarely hear of that equipment.

My estimation are

Antminer S1 - 10,000 Units
Antminer S2 - 25,000 Units
Antminer S3 - 50,000 Units
Antminer S4 - 10,000 Units
Antminer S5 - 50,000 Units
SP10 - 500 Units
Sp20 - 2000 Units
SP30/35 - 250
AVALON 4.1 - 2500 Units
Dragon 1TH Miners - 10,000 Units
KNC Saturn/Jupiters - 10,000 Units
KNC Neptune 10,000 Units

There are more SP 35 units for sure.
131  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Block size limit: is it a problem? on: October 22, 2015, 06:21:32 PM
I think that the main problem with bitcoin mining is its block size limit. The network won't increase the limit but will continue to increase the difficulty (somehow) and will reduce the payments. (Apparently by around June next year the reward will half).

You can speculate all day long and we don't know what will happen at having.  Us miners hope BTC goes up in value (which it has been doing).   But it's so hard to say.

I mean by having they might have a miner with 2x the efficiency of today... we don't know.  Factors like better miners, higher btc value, among other things could make having not bad.  Or it could suck and be horrible.... we just don't know.

Reduced mining reward will lead in many bitcoin companies, if they havn't already done so, of moving to CHINA. Just to bitcoin mine. I am informed the charges of electricity are cheaper there.

Doubtful, you can find just as cheap hosting rates in the United States.  You can even have some "green" power in America and still get that low low price.

I had no doubt this would be the sentence.  He played with fire and in the end, got burned.  The end.

The end? I hope not!  Sad
The Prosecution of Ross Ulbricht should worry us all , that's what I learned after watching this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxLrA1RYEds

That is a very informative video!  Regardless of whether he deserved to be convicted of crimes, this presentation by his wife presents concrete detailed completely provable information demonstrating it was indisputably clear that he did not receive a fair trial, something every American should be able to expect regardless of what they did.   The methods with which he was deprived turned it into the closest thing you can come to a kangaroo court while still having a jury.  This represents a gross violation of the fiduciary duty of our public officials.  Not only does he deserve a fair re-trial with intense scrutiny on the fairness of it, but the public officials should be held accountable by the public by being deprived of a re-election into any public office.

I am not a legal scholar so I have no way of evaluating if he did or did not get a fair trial.  But it should be no surprise regardless that he got no sympathy from the courts and even with a fair trial he was going away for a long time.
135  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: So who drops out at the halving? on: October 01, 2015, 04:01:21 PM
I think bitcoin will see a large increase in value after the halving, the mining industry creates inflation and a flooding of btc on the open market.  After the halving there will be significantly less btc entering the marketplace.

The mining process is set in stone and mining does not "create" inflation, it is essential to process transactions.   Once the halving happens, it will push out inefficient miners.  I would assume anything over 1Gh.s per watt will go away if not already.

so you plan to drop the game with the next halving? i know you have 100tera or something, dunno if it is made of s5 or s7, if the first, you can maybe sell those and buy the new s7 and remain in the game for a longer time

I am in a different position because we own our data-center and are situated in the cheapest power location on the planet.  Our math is a little more forgiving but we will continue to hosting the most efficient hardware as possible.  What I see is another way on consolidation leading up too and after the consolidation.

No concern at all, he knew what he was doing and in the end the same thing that has fallen many men, fell him, arrogance and greed.  He thought we could be beyond the laws in some libertarian fantasy.  In reality, there are states, laws, policy, instinct and common sense.  He is no hero or martyr.  Just another ego that got out of control.

They really do need to fix the worker web interface...

Please email them, they need to get a wave so that management understands they are going backwards for the pool.
139  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin Mine Cooling Options - What are my choices? on: September 30, 2015, 01:24:01 AM
Would you consider a hybrid greenhouse/bitcoin mining for the fall-spring a novel idea to maintain higher temps?  Any idea of a simple solution to keep it happy for both?  I think it is what I want to do and I would be happy if another did it and posted photos too......if it works

I imagine just small like 5 or 10 S7 Ants.

For that little, you likely have many options.  For massive heat loads, your temps can rise so fast that is becomes a serious issue.  The recommended method is what the traditional data-centers do that use Evap, they have backup DX cooling ready then the Evap is unusable.  Take in mind, I come from a service providers mindset so that has different challenges for a single miner and their mine but once they get over 1-200 Kws, they really need to be thinking about this too because of their investment.

The best article yet on bitcoin specific cooling.

Thanks especially for addressing the evaporative cooling aspect as I think many people do not understand that this method of cooling is deadly once outside humidity approaches 80% (It doesn't work)

A very well thought out and informative thread.

Cheers! I wish you wrote this earlier

At 80% humidity, I would say evaporative cooling is 99% useless (unless you are using the fans in the cooler as simply extra fans to move air).  To do much of anything the humidity needs to be about 30% (or ideally 15%).  Just look at a psychometric chart and you can see exactly at what temp and humidity you can get down to.  However, this is with an 100% effective cooler which isn't going to happen, so take about 75% of the distance to the wet bulb.

The great thing about evaporative cooling (and no one talks about) is that the warmer it gets, the lower the humidity will be, and therefore the better the evaporative cooler works.  For every 1 degree rise outside I only get something like a 0.2 degree rise inside.  Overall, temp changes every day are probably the biggest killer of equipment (long term) and evaporative coolers really average out the day and night temps to 1 pretty constant temp all of the time.  I have about 40 degree differences between day and night temps (during the summer) and with evaporative coolers it makes it only about a 8 ~ 10 degree change.  You could do some type of compression cooling to get that last 8 ~ 10 degree change down to 0 change, but it isn't necessary.  The temperature changes have an exponential nature, so 8 ~ 10 degree changes are about 1000th the amount of damage of 40 degree changes.

Thank you for the input and yes the higher temperatures mean higher efficiency.   The problem is that people try and only use that is hot climates and then you are betting that you wont have any hot overcast days that will raise the humidity.   This happened at another hosting provider over the summer and it was pretty bad.  That is why I accept less profits and invest in DX cooling to make sure I can run 24/7/365.    Fans and Evap can only do so much in a desert.

Sure, I agree that if you are in heavy humidity, that will make evap useless.  My first sentence above agrees with that 100%.

Maybe I am wrong, I thought you were in central WA?  Central WA is rated the same climate as New Mexico and about half of Arizona (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_the_United_States#/media/File:Climatemapusa2.PNG).  This makes it essentially a desert.  Evap coolers are ideal in the desert.

Are you talking about ASICSpace?  Their problem certainly wasn't humidity.  I have been to their location a number of times and am very familiar with their problems.  Jonathan (toom.im) has talked at length about what their problems are and I would say he is 110% correct.  Or were you talking about a different provider?

Yes I am in Central Washington and we had a number of high humidity days, mostly because of the on-shore flow that makes it over the Cascades in the form of clouds.
