1201  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon Firmware to mine on wifi on: January 29, 2016, 09:50:43 AM
Hi all

I have an Avalon 4.1 and I was wondering if it could be possible to use a wifi dungle on the rasb pi.

This could give me the possibility to run a avalon anywhere I want.

Any wireless access point will give you the same ability.

http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WA801ND-Wireless-300Mbps-Repeater/dp/B004UBU8IE/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1454040819&sr=1-3&keywords=wireless+access+point

Pretty sure he want a way to have the Avalon software try to access LAN/WAN with wifi in the first place. I dont see an option for wlan, and if i click add new network interface, the two options are lan eth0 and custom.

Might be possible to do with custom, but i don't know how it work.

Slapping a wifi bungle would be simple if it worked out of the box.
1202  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Lepa G1600W PSU for Antminer S7 - Can't power it on ! Bounty 0.05 BTC on: January 29, 2016, 12:07:32 AM
Oh great, I just bought this PSU for my S7 that I will be powering up tomorrow night and NOW I read this thread...  Undecided

Well, I'll give it my best shot and report back on whether or not I can get it running properly.  I will say that I'll be UC the S7 slightly to keep electrical $$ within reasonable limits.

At least it was an "open box" special from Frys, and I've never returned things to Frys, eh?  Roll Eyes

It would work just fine if you properly connect the right connectors to the right rails. Its a hassle having to balance the rails, but it will work just fine if you do.
1203  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: what am I calculating wrong? (free energy no RoI) on: January 28, 2016, 09:36:32 PM
Well even the reselling window to informed buyers will start dwindling as we get closer to halving. There's always the option to sell to somebody less knowledgeable and the karma that comes with creative advertising  Wink

The halving will make a large difference to the earning. When the 16nm chip comes out, even s7 might not be profitable.

I think the S7 will be okay. 16nm is always in existence and the S7's are just fine. But i'm not sure they will survive the halving too well.
1204  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Effects of operating Antminer S5 with 400W-600W PSU on: January 28, 2016, 08:35:45 PM
I see more like 600 watts at STOCK clock out of most of my S5s - but after factoring in the fan and controller/computer usage, 25A should be fairly safe on the hashboard-only side for a non-OC S5.

I wouldn't even think about trying to OC an S5 on a single 600 watt PS - that's pushing it PAST it's ratings - even if it has a 50 Amp rating for it's +12 rail and is single rail.

Hmm, its not past its limit, 600W PSU's limit with .9 efficiency would be 660W limit at the wall. You'd have to really overclock it to get that. But if he said 400-600 PSU, it make it sound like it could be 400W for 120v and 600W for 220v.
1205  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need help with amps and S7... on: January 28, 2016, 05:49:40 PM
You guys have been a huge help. Thanks!

I just talked to my electrician. We are doing (3) outlets each connected to its own 240v/30 amp breaker (I have the space). There is a surge protector being installed on the whole panel (internally). I will go with one of the PDU's shown above that are rated for 30 amp but pushes less. The outlets are right by my panel which works perfect. My plan is to only plug 3 miners in each PDU to start as I work my way up to 9 miners (3 PDU's).

Has anyone seen a difference with using the Bitmain power supply compared to the EVGA power supply? The Bitmain's is much cheaper and didn't know if the EVGA is really even necessary with my electrical setup now. I know most people use the EVGA because they are using 120v. Thoughts?

Once again thanks for all of your help thus far.

They're better, more expensive PSU's. If you want cost effective, go ahead. Personally i like the cleanest powers for my miners. But with how much money you can save, then maybe servers PSU's are the way to go.

However getting PSU packages from the forum is a better price. The Bitmain PSU is not really that much of an interesting buy.

EVGA to get the PCIE cables and power needed your up to the EVGA 1600, it runs around 400 or so.   So extremely high.   You can get server PSU's much cheaper.

There are some "kits" that can power multiple S7's if you go big enough.  And there is of course the bitmain server psu.   I have not had any issues with them they seem to work good.

With getting 240 I would compare prices on kit's and bitmains PSU.  Either way you go it will beat the EVGA by far on cost.

You can use 1300W fine, and thats 175USD but yeah its still expensive to power a single S7, especially with the nice kits using J4bberw0ck's breakout boards.

The 1300 does not come with 10 PCIe cables.  Also look at B8/B9 efficiency.   I would not guarantee a 1300 doing it on current batches.

Even if it did run it would be pushing the 1300W pretty much at max unless you under-clock it.

The EVGA, unlike most PSU out there, are underated for efficiency, at least, their peak limit is much higher than their rated #.
They can actually run their "100% load" no problem. Their components does not degrade easily and as such you'll find yourself possibly not needing to ever RMA it. My EVGA 1000 with 3 years used get the same reading as the brand new one. So running them at 98% load is just fine, it can handle spikes easily from there, it even handle 104% no problem. Though i'm not sure whats the true limit is.

They really can do their rated load, DC, continuously with no problem. The only downside is efficiency loss.

Now i don't know if this numbers hold across all that S7 design, but so far i get 1280W DC with my B8. I run the fans at 3360 RPM.

And yeah, you might need to get an extra cable, or maybe not, the way i set it up is;

3 double, 1 per blade, 1 single 1 per blade. Then a periff for the controller. I did not need to come up with any extra cables myself.
I don't know where i got these PCI-e converter, but i have so many of them. And since these baby are modular, i simply used a 3rd double from another EVGA.

Worse case scenario, if you somehow has absolutely nothing on hand (i have spare of everything, because being ready for anything is my motto). Grab some extra cables and perhaps y splitter while you're at it. Start by checking Finksy and Klondite's stuff.

In this case, you could get 2 4$ y splitter. If you absolutely have nothing on hand for some reason.

Here's the Bad news with these recent Batch 9

1) There's no consistency with all the 4 separate Batch 9 orders I received, except 1 thing.  They are all used for at least a few weeks if not much longer for sure.  This recent batch is probably the worst.  They didn't even bother cleaning the side and connectors, etc so it's even more obvious.  QA is what they will call it, I'm sure.  How much effort is it really to clean the machine a bit so the customer can at least pretend to think they got new machines.

2) FANs - Manual settings for the FANs are not necessary the same for the same level ie 60%.  So when you hear people recommend you to keep it at 60% in case of internet outage, do check what the RPM is and what temperature maximum you want to be at and set it that per S7 rather than a generic value like 60.  I have many set at 50 while others set at 80% to be at the same level.

3) Batch 8 / 9.  Some will have the extra connectors for FAN and Hashboards, many will not.  Last batch 9 order they all had extra connectors.  This order, none of them have it.  See picture.

Ahhh, they're probably B8 they been mining with for a while. Welp, its not like we can be surprised, we all know how ethically mushy Bitmain is. I don't suppose there is some clause we can use if we receive an obviously used and not pristine unit?
1207  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is this good for someone who's starting out bitcoin mining? on: January 28, 2016, 07:50:19 AM
Hello,

I'm looking to start bitcoin mining and i have some questions:
1. is this a good bitcoin miner for someone just starting out http://www.amazon.com/Bitmain-AntMiner-S3-453Gh-Digital/dp/B00LETT8VS/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1453966328&sr=1-5&keywords=Bitcoin+miner
2. and going on from the first question would i need  psu for the miner?

If you have very cheap electricity, sure. It is a good miner, its just showing age in term of efficiency. The price is also a bit steep, you can probably find better. And yes you would need a PSU.

An EVGA gold G2 750 would do two nicely.

I'm not happy with my batch 9 performance. Is it too cold?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/4w7ykfd71sgz8qr/S7.jpg?dl=0

Trying running it at 55-60c to see if you see a big difference. That could be it. But you also have a pretty high HW from what you should. What is the PSU? I've seen this kind of performance drop when using a subpar PSU. Can be one the other or a combination.

AX1200 powering board 1+2
RM750 powering board 3 and controller

On dedicated 240v outlet

Should be fine, try raising the temps, thats easy to do. I'd just be surprised if you'd lose 100GH/s just because of the temps, but i'm interested to see what the hashrate will be afterwards.

Correct, you are not looking at the right mining hardware. That miner is absurdly obsolete. Unless you're getting them for 20 cents each, drop that idea right away.

Instead buy one of these;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1126705.0

It will by itself, with no need of any additional hardware, completely outclass those 9 USB stick.

Well done in doing your research before binge buying.

thanks for that info. bit coin is defiantly a lot to learn.

so if i use 9x https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1126705.0 on that usb bar id have a decent simple setup right?

Edit: they will work on mac right. also dose anyone have a mac OS X app recommendation?

Not really a point in getting 9, one to learn, even 9 is a tiny amount of hashrate. But its in the low 3 digit GH/s (which is very low). (Better than your single GH digit you'D get with 9 of the first ones you mentioned) These are not cost effective, they're just a toy to give you an idea for mining. Not a ROI item.

And huh, nobody use or like mac so not much dev is made for them. But Linux is free, so..

But nowadays the miners all have controllers designed for them so you dont need to run them off a PC of any sort. A RasPi would run them and be actually useful.

hi im a total new at this but not even sure if I'm looking at the right hardware even.  not looking to get rich, just something as a hobby that i could buy .cbr comics for example.  below is a list of parts I'm looking to power off my early 2010 MacBook Pro.  do you think if i join something like slushpool, i might make my goal of earning some to buy .cbr comics?  still no idea what software to use. keep hearing of asteroid but i can't find it.

Thanks in advance, Alice

I've burn 2 LEPA 1600PSu's in my S7, the first one worked for about 5 minutes, the second not even 1, replaced it with an EVGA 1300.
Its a shitty PSU, Tupsu warned me, he have burn some too, but I had already purchased it...
IMO you should get a server PSU or an EVGA G2.

No argument there. Multi-rail PSU is a dead giveaway. Its not too bad according to Johnny guru but even the EVGA g2 1300w would of most likely been a much better pick.
1213  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Lepa G1600W PSU for Antminer S7 - Can't power it on ! Bounty 0.05 BTC on: January 27, 2016, 08:16:29 PM
because 4 rails of 30A give only 1200watt and batch 8 eats over 1300watt

...huh nope.

30A*12 = 360w per rail, time 4 equal 1440w for the 4 rails. And the DC draw is under 1300watts for the 3 blades at stock settings. At the wall you will get 1430W~ At 40% fan speed or so.

Told him already Smiley

You need 8pin cpu to 6pin vga to pull 12v from the 2 20A rails, v1 and v2

I can test it on batch 8, already working on batch 7

Why? He can just spread the load on the 30a's. Could slap the controller on a 20a but not obligatory.

I tried powering only 2 blades and it seems to be working ...
seems the G1600w Can't handle 1400W...

It should be handling up to 1775w at the wall or something. Its a shitty multirail PSU.

So you're going to have to spread to load among the multi rail properly to run it. Then it should run fine.

sounds like rail overload? try just 2 blades, not all 3!

Should really not be an issue.

Some cables i've had were weird and i had to mess around them with the multimeter before they worked. Not sure whats up with that.

Does the PSU turn on at all? A bit unclear if both do not turn on or if only the miner does not turn on.

How much for the S5?

I just mentioned it to fish for some offers. If i get a good one, i might take it, otherwise i plan on mining with them for at least another solid month or 2. I'm not sure about swapping these for .3 hardware can be really worth it. They are still very profitable right now.

I have received a couple more PMs about the S5's so i decided to put a price tag on them. Right now i would sell them at 250$ each, with the current fan and condition they are in. One of the S5 has 2 phantom chips. Full data;

https://i.imgur.com/sfnB4rM.png?1

Whats your ambient temperature, the temps seem pretty low being extremely overclocked and with those generic S3 fans.

They seem quieter then my S3+ which only uses 400Watts.

That was about 22-25C those temps are pretty high for me, i took the screen on a heat spike winter day, the temps right now are 57, 56, 59, 54 and the intake is 17C.
1220  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Effects of operating Antminer S5 with 400W-600W PSU on: January 27, 2016, 04:24:34 PM
Just tried to power a single s5 blade&controller from an 24A psu.

I got beeps and beeps and beeps and no hashing! The psu is too weak to power the controller, the blade and the fan.

Might have worked only on the blade, not sure

24A PSU is not enough even for a single board. For a single board I would not use less than 30A /350W.

Rich

It might work on a single blade, the one without controller and fan, But it's risky

On lowest fan speed, i got 570watt on 240volt circuit, so...

Overclocked, a single S5 blade should go up to 300W DC, so its definitively okay for one blade. I suppose if you overvolt the 12v input, you could go higher, but, knowing this, it should not be too hard. And at stock settings, if the PSU is actually 600w, which probably means when its on 240v, then it can do the whole S5 no problem, with probably a decent overclock, too.
