1221  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Tarnish on brass Casascius coins, what to do? on: April 10, 2019, 12:52:43 AM
Conservation is OK, cleaning is not.  What's the difference, you ask.  Conservation is done so well that a grader can not tell the coin has been cleaned.  The "cleaned" coin is considered "market acceptable".

Conservation is done by professionals with proprietary solutions they have developed over years.  The process is called dipping.  The best in the business are very expensive and sought after.  Some of them are also Dealers and buy problem coins, conserve, get graded and maybe profit.  PCGS and NGC also provide conservation services but need to inspect the coin first to make sure the process won't make the coin worse.  Sometimes what you uncover under the problem area is worse than the original problem.

Any form of abrasive cleaning; rubbing with a cloth, polishing, etc is a big NO NO.  NEVER.  It will leave hairline scratches which will be noticeable to any decent collector.

If you want to try your hand at dipping get yourself some 90% US Silver Coinage; it can be had at near spot (let me know if you need any) and play around with some MS 70 Coin Cleaner.  https://www.amazon.com/MS-70-oz-Coin-Cleaner-Bottle/dp/B000YQBZPE

Do not attempt to dip/clean/conserve a valuable coin as an amateur/hobbiest.  You will 100% make the coin less valuable.

Here is a great tale of an amateur who cleaned a rare coin with horrible financial ramifications:

Is it still a 3 coin set; 100-50-25?

Any possibility for a Rose Gold partial plate like the top 2 coins?

I second this.  I choose other for the 100 and would love to see a partial rose gold with the clouds being rose gold.

I also choose the 25 partial gold with the clouds.

Great coins natty, incredible design and execution.  I am looking forward to getting my hands on a set or two.

I definitely do not know who you are referring to.  It sounds like you are talking about me.  I am on default trust and am #10 on bpip.org in trust.  So given above, it sure sounds like you are saying I am a manipulative control freak.

We have traded many times so I am assuming you don't mean that; but read over what you wrote and realize it is what your are implying.  While you may have legitimate issues with some DT members maybe don't attack us all in one statement.

Do you go around compulsively negative rating people with little to no substantiation? Do you abuse your position on the trust list to silence people who disagree with or criticize you? Do you coordinate with others to make sure people who criticize your in group are excluded? No? Then I am not talking about you. I am very sorry you feel offended by my statements. I would however consider you part of the later group of people intimidated into not supporting people whom you otherwise would agree with in order to protect yourself from these unscrupulous users populating the default trust.

I can assure you I am intimidated by no one here.

Edit to add:  I don't think i do any of the things you detailed.

Does anybody else think DefaultTrust is slowly turning into a popularity contest where you have to abide by rules from the established members or else you are shunned?
Even if I get the intention of forcing a member to "clean"(maintain aka evict some undesirables,... ) his trust list to stay in DT1, this feels kinda wrong.

Trust is sometimes a fickle bitch, but while i have lauda distrusted i respect everybody elses decision to trust lauda and don't go into a frenzy distrusting people.

The reaction with willi9974 was in my opinion a bit overboard, a notice like "hey you are in DT1, can you please look at what does this mean and update your list accordingly?" should have sufficed.

This has always been the case for the default trust. At first people pretended this was not the case and the staff tried to cover for them, but eventually the environment of having no rules meant it just continually devolved into this ball washing circle jerk we have today where the most manipulative control freaks sit atop the default trust. These people care more about getting their dopamine hit from making little red marks and controlling people than serving this community equitably.

I take issue with the bold part as you are painting everyone on DT with the same brush.  There are some good people on DT who are not manipulative control freaks and I for one take offense at your statement.

No, I am not. Everyone here knows exactly who I am talking about and I went on to describe the individuals. Unfortunately though most of those people a top of the list still make excuses for them regardless, and are intimidated against openly supporting certain trustworthy people for fear of gaining their ire.

I definitely do not know who you are referring to.  It sounds like you are talking about me.  I am on default trust and am #10 on bpip.org in trust.  So given above, it sure sounds like you are saying I am a manipulative control freak.

1233  Economy / Collectibles / Re: BEWARE of FAKE CASASCIUS COINS on: April 07, 2019, 07:35:19 PM
Hey guys, been in the crypto scene since 2013, but I am a first time prospective Casascius owner. Looking to get my first error coin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5127692.0

It SEEMS legit, but I had some concerns about the textured background and the N in Vires In Numeris (I can't really tell from the pictures).

The seller is a newbie too. Any (other) red flags?

It would be nice to have an angled shot of the front as usually the text on the knock offs sticks out a lot more. The N and the U look a bit melded and the texture is not quite right either but it looks like a seriously worn out coin which might account for that.

You should ask for photos with better light and from other angles.

minerjones has verified that it looks legit. I will see if I can get some higher definition images though first.

For what it's worth it looks real to me but has some wear/circulation damage.  I agree with gentelmand some angled photos of the obverse would be helpful.

1237  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [AUCTION] Silver wallets gold edition #081 1oz silver [ends april 12 5 pm est] on: April 07, 2019, 08:26:43 AM
You can also very likely open the capsule with your finger nails. If it did by some chance break you could get another at a local coin store or just use something else to ship it. I think most of these bids so far are made with the possibility that the coin is scratched up at least a little bit. If you take the pics you’ll get higher bids.

If you have poor grooming standards that will work, otherwise use a utility knife.

1239  Other / Meta / Re: User got voted into DT1 by sockpuppets on: April 06, 2019, 09:53:42 PM
Rmcdermott927 Distrusts:
1. ~TMAN (Trust: 243: -0 / +25) (DT1! (18) 879 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP)
2. ~Lauda (Trust: 300: -0 / +31) (DT1! (23) 868 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP)
No, why would I care about that?
Those sockpuppets (you and I presume) included anyone who excluded Lauda from their trust list, and excluded anyone who included lauda on their trust lists.

The reason why he is included on their trust lists is because he excluded lauda and TMAN

Quote
Although it seems the Rmcdermott927 exclusion was somewhat resolved as of the last trust list dump.
I don't really follow the Collectibles-thread, but looking back a few months he did have more exclusions. Either way, the reason for this topic is clearly stated, no need for speculation Smiley
That quote was referring to different research I was planning on doing.

I cannot believe I am writing this, but I agree with QuickSeller.

Would you mind taking the capsule off the coin so we could see it directly (would recommend gloves if you touch the coin, no matter what a certain LesbianCow around here might say   Cheesy).  I'm guessing the scratches are from it, but hard to tell.  Also, you need to lose the gf, cmon man!   Cheesy

btw the coin is #081

.011BTC

Thanks for mentioning that the coin is 081 and not 180, dyslexia. lol didn't even notice.
I don't think I have the hologram sadly, I'm sorry guys. I'll keep looking but please bid assuming that I do not have it.
If a few more people request me to take pics with the coin capsule off of it, I will crack it open. I just don't want to do it and regret it, I don't have anything new capsules to put it in either.

The capsule comes apart, you will see a small seam which you can get a utility knife into to open it and then you can put the coin back in the capsule once photographed.

Honestly, I would be more interested in photos of the girl that is worth giving up bitcoin over.

I bid 0.013
