I see many people saying"a solution to pow" as if pow was a problem and pos was a solution to every problem.

The actual problem with PoW is the used energy.
With the rising average temperature and the media comparing BTC's energy usage to countries like denmark, a 'solution' would be handy.

Wether PoS can (safely and securely) replace PoW is neither proved nor disproved.
It may but also may not be the 'solution'.

But if the hashrate (with more miner) and the energy consumption is going to rise further, governments will start cracking down on mining (like already happened in several countries).

I think this is hypocrisy, as Christmas lights consume as much energy.
http://www.coindaily.co/2017/12/14/christmas-decorations-consume-as-much-electricity-as-bitcoin-mining/

And how much energy does the whole banking system consumes?
Hi much does visa consumes? Nobody knows exactly, while btc mining is easy to point out , as someone who does not understand what bitcoin is mining is just a waste of energy to create some nerd money in a computer.
12542  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC Segwit Address not recognised by my Ledger Nano S Wallet on: April 25, 2018, 11:33:58 AM
One more important thing. Did you buy ledger nano from third party?
There is a bug that makes a phishing address, if a hacker gets physical access to it.

12543  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC Segwit Address not recognised by my Ledger Nano S Wallet on: April 25, 2018, 11:29:51 AM
That's scary. I use a ledger nano as well.
I have heard some reports like this on trezor

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3310150.0

https://amp.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/7cebxn/help_me_162_bitcoin_cash_250000_disappeared_from/?st=JC36UPUC&sh=7589326f

Read those topics.. people suggest good options.

Also it would be a good option to contact ledger support, after you have tried the methods mentioned on the posts above.
12544  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Stolen bitcoins (blockchain.info) on: April 25, 2018, 11:22:02 AM
Maybe we should start asking donations?)

You can try but I think you will not get them here...
You can mine those btc again. nd store them on multiple wallets. I think this is the best option.

Yes and Proof of Stake (and Delegated POS) might be a solution to POW, hense Ethereum current move to POS...https://www.blockchains-expert.com/en/proof-of-work-vs-proof-of-stake-2/

Nobody knows when ethereum Casper (pos) will be released. And Casper is not 100% proof of stake, as most blocks will still be pow in the beginning.

I see many people saying"a solution to pow" as if pow was a problem and pos was a solution to every problem. Pls still needs to be tested in a great scale blockchain like ethereum. Until then we don't know what to really expect.
12547  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reasons why not to invest in bitcoin? on: April 24, 2018, 07:03:22 PM
So there has been a lot of hype about bitcoin lately and I know it is revolutionary and has lots of advantages. But let's try to state the reasons why exactly do you personally think that bitcoin is not great and lacks in some points. I know it has great applications and is just great but it is not falwless right?
My question is simple and straight, What are the flaws of bitcoin?
Except its high volatility and "Dark use" (in illegal activities).

Mining Centralization is a flaw now, in my opinion.

I think that in general everyone should have at least a small of their investment portfolio in bitcoin.
Something like 0,5 - 5% i think is a very health for every portfolio.

Bitcoin has a risk totally disassociated to other investments, such as gold, stocks, bonds. In the right percentage, bitcoin could even lower the risk of your portfolio.

One important thing is to never over-invest. When you put more than you can afford to lose, most people become paranoid and make bad trading decisions.
12548  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Even air-gapped wallets aren't safe... on: April 24, 2018, 06:56:48 PM
NOTE: before you get tooooo paranoid, these attacks all require that the cold storage device is compromised.

I think this is the most important thing about cold storage, hardwallets, etc.
People buy hardwallets a little cheaper from third party seller, compromising security.
12549  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Stolen bitcoins (blockchain.info) on: April 24, 2018, 04:16:06 PM
I am not a hacker and I don't know anything about Apple products.

But there are a few weak points on your iPhone:

-Apple has synchronization stuff.
-Your personal phone is online100% of the time and your seed was not even encrypted.
-You may have been exposed to phishing sites on WhatsApp/telegram groups, emails (I know that's unlikely, but your personal phone is more exposed to that than other devices).

Storing seed on a piece of paper is 100% anti hack, unless he has physical access to the paper.

Think like this.

Every time you write your seed (or scan photo etc) on a device with internet connection it is considered exposed and you should transfer your funds immediately. Your seed was online 100% of the time (not matter that it was locally on device, because the device was online).

It's very sad what happened to you. I would be devastated. But don't let this move you away from this technology. Use this opportunity to learn. You will make that money again.
12550  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Stolen bitcoins (blockchain.info) on: April 24, 2018, 12:03:32 PM
Blockchain.info has the 12 word seed. The user owns the private keys and the seed. I think it's a good wallet, considering it's a online wallet....
Probably someone got access to his seed. As he uses 2FA, it's very unlikely the site had been hacked

That's because of people like you, I have formed the view that online wallet blockchain.info it is safe and convenient. Therefore, a hardware wallet was purchased and lying on a shelf in the closet, and I used the service blockchain.info. You all know the result... Stolen coins.

Now you are blaming me for your mistakes. You first started to blame blockchain.info, now that it is clearly not their fault, you are blaming me for your disregard of basic security rules.

I asked a few times but he didn't answer how he stored his seed...

I long time could not find the seed. I wrote about it in this tread. Now found, the seed was stored in several photos on my iPhone 7 .

That's the wrong way to store your seed. That's how the hacker got access to it and stole your coins.

Even if you had a hardware wallet you would have been hacked.
Even if you had a paper wallet you would have been hacked.
Even if you had a bitcoin core wallet on an airgapped pc you would have been hacked.

That was not blockchain.info fault, as it is the most popular wallet out there. When you click on the Seed on blockchain.info they tell many times to write it on paper.

Learn from the experience, store your hardware wallet seed on a piece of paper or an offline environment.
12551  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the difference between PoW and PoS ? on: April 24, 2018, 11:38:15 AM
Nice summary. Just A small correction.

The equation in pow is just an attempt to find a hash that is a number smaller than x. When someone finds a hash that solves the equation a new block is created and that miner is rewarded

There are no miners in pos, they are called validators.
12552  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: One coin to rule them all!!! on: April 23, 2018, 09:31:49 PM
I am fairly new to crypto...as I analyze many of the alt coins, I find a lot of them say the same thing...making transactions faster, getting point of sale in place, making crypto mainstream...etc.   A lot of it sounds like spin.   In the end, do you think there is going to be room for more than one coin?  And if so, what would the scenario be?

There are soooo many GENIUS ideas attached to coins and tokens...eliminating the middleman, decentralizing money, global computers and clouds...just endless...but many of them seem more like companies we are investing in rather than coins that we could use for real world consumerism.

There are many kinds of "coins".  And I think there is room for many coins.

There are those payment only coins, like BTC and all his little clones: LTC, Btrash....

There are Protocol Tokens, like Ethereum, Neo, Icon, Waves... They allow utility tokens to run on their blockchain.

Utility Tokens in my opinion are the riskier, as they are like double risk. If the protocols fails, the utility fails too.
Utility tokens examples are OmiseGO, Chainlink, Golem, 0x....

There are privacy coins like Monero, Dash, PIVX, Particl....

I have littel bit Bitcoin in market exchange and I don't know where I must save it, I am try use wallet Bitcoin in https://bitcoin.org but need 1 week for sincronisasi & I am try https://blockchain.info but wallet address always change so any good idea for me?

Hello,

THe best option is to buy a ledger nano S. But until it arrives, you have two options: Desktop or mobile wallet.

Do you have a safe computer? Do you go to shady websites to download illegal stuff?
If you don't, I will suggest https://electrum.org/#download

If your computer is not 100% safe, I think mobile wallets are a good choice.

I like Coinomi Android Wallet. Full Segwit.

12555  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Stolen bitcoins (blockchain.info) on: April 23, 2018, 05:25:20 PM

It's blockchain.info, it's non-seeded so he doesn't have the 12 words.

If your funds actually exited your wallet there is nothing you can do, I assume that there is nothing to do with blockchain.info operators and it's probably your wallet/computer has been compromised.
It's a lesson to learn- next time if you store funds that you can't afford losing then do it on a hardware wallet offline, so you won't risk losing your funds due to lack of security.

Blockchain.info has the 12 word seed. The user owns the private keys and the seed. I think it's a good wallet, considering it's a online wallet....

I asked a few times but he didn't answer how he stored his seed...
12556  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: It is NOT secure to use hardware wallets (and it never was) on: April 23, 2018, 03:30:13 PM
Yeah, it's tough to "be your own bank" when your funds are physically in the custody of someone else. But every storage medium has its tradeoffs. It just depends what the biggest threats are.

A friend of a friend had his house burglarized and his safe stolen -- everything gone. Probably a targeted/inside job. Anyway, in hindsight, I guess he'd have been better off with a safe deposit box. I think the moral of that story is don't put all your eggs in one basket. You should never store everything in one place.

Maybe if his privatekeys were inside a drawer, they would not have been stolen. They would look worthless.

Or splitting privatekey/seed in two separate pieces of paper maybe a good idea also.

Perfeita resposta.

I don't think theme will change anytime soon.
I like the current theme, but it hurts my eyes at night. So I am using f.lux , a good program that reduces de blues light and increases the red light. Pretty good to sleep.
12559  Local / Português (Portuguese) / Re: Bitcoin - Perguntas e Respostas. on: April 23, 2018, 01:29:44 PM
