13321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I propose core forks to bigger blocks now. on: December 17, 2017, 04:36:52 PM
It seems obvious that bigger blocks are not the answer, we need some other solution. Bigger blocks will just bloat the system, and make things worse.

Harddrive space is cheap. The argument was always that nodes must be available for all users to run no matter what income but why would anyone that cant afford to send a fraction of a bitcoin bother to run a node?

Scaling is going to be an issue for a while but why not uncripple bitcoin in the meantime until the lightning network can actually deliver?

Where have you been in the lats year? This was the main debate before the SegWit came to life and before BCash was forked out of Bitcoin.
Just do your reading. The ones believing Core developers are correct and just increasing the block size is not an answer are here. We believe that SegWit, LN and the future development will get Bitcoin on track.
The others have their altcoin and their dreams. BCash, from what I know, has increased size blocks, although I am not certain, I didn't follow that path.
13322  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [POOL] Exchange Preferences on: December 16, 2017, 05:24:20 PM
Quick question traders if you have a moment, this will help a lot:

1- Which exchange interface do you like the most (UI) ? Why ?
2- Which exchange chart do you like ? Why ?
3- Which exchange do you use / trust more ? and again, why ?

Feel free NOT to support your answer with an argument. Your opinion (even if not popular) can help a lot in this study.

I appreciate your participation.

1 & 2 Is Poloniex for me. For some reason the UI is closest to what I need and it's easiest for me to reach. And the chart is better updated than most.
3. Here is a problem. Basically I trust no one. Polo had in history more of my money, but they had transfer issues and they delisted coins for no reason (market manipulation?); Bittrex had this late sudden KYC issue with many failing to pass it and with slow help... Right now I am quite disoriented about which exchange to really trust (!), although I personally didn't have any issues like closed account or lost funds.
13323  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Merry Christmas from yahoo62278(3rd prize added) on: December 16, 2017, 06:49:14 AM
Hi all,
The presents for Christmas are already bought, especially for the kids. But some extra money never hurts.
If I win, this time I will not use the money to pay some more from the mortgage, instead I'll buy something for me, maybe even a proper monitor. And I promise I will buy some more food for the cat too!

I know I am not great at writing stories, the main reason to post here is to tell that I really appreciate to see threads like this.
Merry Christmas Yahoo62278, Merry Christmas all!

13325  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Incorrect Available Balance on core wallet on: December 15, 2017, 02:34:58 PM
three things! Just for my own knowledge, can you tell me what the rescan actually does. 2. can you recommened a wallet for myself that doesnt require me to have this 150gb download on my laptop (only have 256gb) 3. can u send me your bitcoin address Smiley
1. HCP answered this already.
2. Electrum[/ur] is in general the most recommended desktop wallet if you don't want to download the full blockchain.
3. I'm not sure if you're talking to me, as "tokexchain" got in between the quote, but if you are: my addy is in my profile (click my name).

I agree that usually Electrum is the best and easiest option for wallet, still, I want to add something.
Since @sharpma already has the core wallet and may be using it for quite a while, another possibly good option is to keep the core wallet, but in pruned mode. This way it will keep a lot less data on HDD. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1599458.0
13326  Local / Minerit / Re: Intrebarile unui noob trezit cam tarziu (sper nu prea tarziu|) on: December 15, 2017, 02:15:22 PM

Trebuie tinuta in siguranta.

13327  Local / Minerit / Re: Intrebarile unui noob trezit cam tarziu (sper nu prea tarziu|) on: December 15, 2017, 01:02:39 PM
Salut,

a. Compul trebuie sa fie sigur / fara virusi si surprize, ca altfel iti poti pierde banutii.

Cat pastrezi si cat schimbi in RON e decizia ta.
13328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does it make any sense to buy Bitcoin now? on: December 15, 2017, 09:43:14 AM
Does it make any sense to buy Bitcoin now? Isn't the price too high?

Some say that Bitcoin will fall. Then it doesn't make sense.
Some say that Bitcoin may get to 20-20k before the year ends. If you believe them, you better buy asap.
We can't tell what's going to happen. I believe that even if it may fall, it will also recover to even higher levels.

Will it ever offer 30 000% returns?

300x returns? No. But some say it could easily reach 1 million until 2020. That's 58x, not very bad.
However, if this is what you expect, you better stop investing now; with such expectancy you'll fall for Ponzi schemes and you'll lose your money.

All in all, if you believe that Bitcoin is a good project, if you believe it didn't reach its maximum potential, then you can buy.
If you are just a speculator wannabe, you have a lot more to learn before starting to work on real money.
13329  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible to have lots of Altcoin wallets on external hard drive? on: December 15, 2017, 08:36:39 AM
And What about the AppData folder where SIA wallet has taken up 8GB disc space?  Can I change the default storage

Since you have Windows, I'll teach you the trick.
You'll find out in your life that there are many apps that use AppData and such folders to deposit their data, since it's M$ standard and it has to be OK, right? And most don't have option to change that.
But you can make a symbolic link. The app will believe it uses a folder in AppData (or wherever...) and the actual data can be somewhere else, even a different drive.

You have to do (in AppData folder) something like: mklink /D your_unwanted_folder_name "D:\path\to\new\folder"
your_unwanted_folder_name has to not exist, you have to move it away first.

Dear NeuroticFish

So I move one of the folders inside say Appdata>Roaming to external hard

drive?#
Then we add a symbolic link inside Appdata>Roaming?

how to do that?
I   I know the mkdir command on command.com to create a director
Is Mklink a command on the it as well?

Sorry for my ignorance,
Thanks
Horsetail

Yes, mklink is similar (sortof) to mkdir.

Let's say your have a lot of space (maybe a new HDD) and you have on that the drive E.
Let's say that your user on that computer is Horsetail and you have a folder c:\users\Horsetail\AppData\Roaming\MyPreciousssCoin with a lot of data.
Step 1. Close all the programs related to MyPreciousssCoin (wallet, daemon, whatever)
Step 2. Create on E: the folder Cryptocurrencies
Step 3. Move the folder MyPreciousssCoin into E:\Cryptocurrencies  (Ctrl-X, Ctrl-V)
Step 4. Start command prompt as administrator
Step 5. In that command prompt change dir to c:\users\Horsetail\AppData\Roaming\
Step 6. Type (then enter) : mklink /D MyPreciousssCoin "E:\Cryptocurrencies\MyPreciousssCoin"
Step 7. Verify that a folder-like item was created as c:\users\Horsetail\AppData\Roaming\MyPreciousssCoin ; You can even enter there, it should go to the data (which you moved).
Step 8. Start MyPreciousssCoin wallet/daemon.

I made the steps from my head, without re-check, sorry if there is any typo.

Edit: you can repeat the steps for each coin, obviously.
13330  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin the New Gold & Dash for Payments? on: December 15, 2017, 08:09:44 AM
What about the high transaction fees of bitcoin? Can you imagine if amazon accepted bitcoin payments and people order a book for $20 and have to pay high transaction fee which makes it too expensive? I see BTC more as a investment than a currency for daily payments.

Of course the fees are way too big now. And I still believe that the current size of the mempool is unnatural. And you are right on this, there was already a story about Steam no longer accepting Bitcoin exactly because of the fees.
There are already merchants accepting some of the altcoins here and there, I know that too.

For now, the best option is indeed to work with Bitcoin-as-asset, not Bitcoin-as-currency if you cannot use SegWit.
But Bitcoin is evolving. SegWit is already a big step. LN will follow. The devs will improve Bitcoin until it will become fit to be used as currency.

And let me give an example. I have a "Bitcoin card". Before, converting Bitcoin to fiat was expensive. They moved to SegWit and now I don't even know if it's for free or just dirt cheap. It's a good step forward.
13331  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin the New Gold & Dash for Payments? on: December 15, 2017, 07:11:23 AM
Will Bitcoin become the new gold and will Dash be used for daily payments? Any other potential crypto currencies in mind that can replace BTC or DASH?

No. Bitcoin IS the new gold. And, after a couple more fixes, it will be still Bitcoin used for daily payments.

Dash doesn't fit to this equation. There are many faster coins, there are other anon coins (and there will always be a debate on how anon really is one or another), there are more stable coins.
The only thing you try to do here is to advertise Dash. You don't really want to see other coin names here, so don't ask for them.
13332  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin period of volatility is over? on: December 15, 2017, 07:04:33 AM
I'm looking at Bitcoin charts for the past few days and it looks like a straight flat line. I'm not sure whether to feel happy or sad about this but could this possibly be related to the fact that we now have bitcoin futures? Does this mean bitcoin volatility will be less?

The effect of the Bitcoin Futures is still very small. The volatility will decrease over time, but the party is not over yet.
Right now there may be a good mix between the others that think it's time to cash in and the others thinking that it's still a good time to invest, especially because of the news about the futures.
There's a good chance that "any moment now" to have a big correction or a jump to 20-22k. And there's a good chance to have a flat line for months (although I don't really believe that).
13333  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is a million dollars possible? on: December 14, 2017, 08:19:53 PM
If one were to buy and hold solid  avaerge coins (not a coin that kicks out and gets 10000% gain), but rather a nice steady gain like eth, Ltc etc (top 20) and starts with 10k, is it possible to reach a million without trading and buying/selling at highs and lows? If so, how long would you predict it would take? Or are most coins not going to last long term, so every 6 months would I have to rebalance with newer coins?

Monero had a long history of 0.5$-2$ prices. The ones that invested back then 10k$ into it are surely millionaires now. And it took 3 years.
Some coins do better, some not. 2017 was a crazy year and I can't tell if more will follow. And you need a crazy year for this, really, else it could take even 10 years easily.
13334  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: DERO: A secure, private blockchain with Smart Contracts. on: December 14, 2017, 08:11:08 PM

Dero is a brand of washing powders, owned by Unilever. https://www.unilever.ro/brands/
13335  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Bubble burst on: December 14, 2017, 06:44:27 PM
for all good or bad, prices are TOO HIGH right now and I feel we are going to see a general correction in the next months, maybe not in BTC, but definitely in Altcoins.

Altcoins use to follow Bitcoin sooner or later. The good projects will survive if the crypto world doesn't collapse.
Bitcoin is indeed too high. But wall street is driving it forwards now. Corrections will happen, but they will not be very big - I mean I don't expect to see Biitcoin again under 6000$ for example...
Some even tell that 22000$ is the next step (but maybe they're too bold).
13336  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Where to announce new mining pool on: December 14, 2017, 06:40:45 PM
Hello!  I have started a new Monero mining pool.  It's zero fee to get miners for now, but I see it's against forum rules to post announcements about these.  With that said, is there an actual forum for posting about new pools or has that just been explicitly banned due to in all likelihood a lot of scammers and fly by night pools?

There's the altcoin pools subforum; then there's the Monero mining thread. And then there's the Monero main thread (but you have to make sure you are allowed to advertise your pool in the main thread).
You may have to search a little for them.
13337  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: computer dying. are my wallets in the Hard Disk Drive? on: December 14, 2017, 06:36:42 PM
I have a Dying computer.  It won't stay on. I bought the exact same computer on  ebay used.  if I change out hard disk drive from my dying computer will that carry my wallets With Coins in then to the ebay computer?
I tried a thumb drve or memory stick. not sure what it is called.  But it tore all wallets to pieces. tried to burn them to dvd or cd disk. put disk in a laptop I had some wallets but not all of them and no coins in them. I could not see the the coins anyway. wallets also needed to re sync.

Do I need to ground my body to computer before removing hard disk drive?

     Thank You For Your Help!!!

There may be the HDD the part dying on the old computer and then you just haven't do anything good. And the operation may be unsafe, if you don't know what you are doing.
The best practice is to copy your wallets to the new computer. And if you tell more exactly what you have, people can guide you. While the blockchain data is huge (especially for Bitcoin), the wallet is actually very small. The blockchain can be re-downloaded from the internet, the wallet should be easily moved from one computer to another with pen drive (just make sure you eject it before getting it out).
13338  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS is next Ethereum on: December 14, 2017, 06:24:16 PM
A lot of people saying that EOS is going to be next Ethereum

What's your honest opinion? Should we invest or not?

My opinion is that WAVES is the next Ethereum. And from what I know there are a few other coins/platforms competing for the name of "Next Ethereum".
And .. as others said, the name is quite unfortunate.
13339  Economy / Economics / Re: question on long term prices on: December 14, 2017, 03:23:43 PM
Hi, I am new to all this, but help me understand this. If there is a crypto coin that is very useful and has functional value, not just speculative, say it becomes very expensive. What is to stop someone from just creating their own coin that is the almost identical to it, and using it instead, so high prices are not paid for the other coin? How can all these coins maintain high values, when people can just create as many new coins as they want?

Nobody, really.
But it's not enough just to clone the coin. You have to convince people to switch to your new coin or at least use it: miners, exchanges, traders.
If there's no gain behind it, nobody will follow you.

There are many Bitcoin clones (and I mean 1000% clones, same algorithm, same everything), then there are lightly changed coins (Litecoin, Dogecoin and many others, changed from algorithm to emission rules). Some have no success at all, some have moderate or even big success.
13340  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Bounties (Altcoins) / Re: [INSPEER] - Bounty Campaign on: December 14, 2017, 01:29:37 PM
Does it mean that bounty campaign is also extended ?, Note on the 1-st page of this thread in announcement it says campaign is till 4th of December.

The spreadsheet is planned only until 4th of December too. And for twitter I see it's filled now.
Just they've written in the first post that "We decided to reserve 3% of all crowdsale funds raised for our bounty program."
And this may mean that the payments will happen only after the crowdsale has ended.
