I think the curve is slightly too steep in that the halving periods come too quickly on the blockchain.

But trying to restart bitcoin is a fool's errand at this point.
1382  Economy / Economics / Re: The current Bitcoin economic model doesn't work on: May 31, 2011, 06:07:22 PM
hoarding means your expected price appreciation/depreciation is entirely in the market price for the object itself.

saving covers everything that involves investing in a productive venture to receive more of that item in the future.

hoarding you have X of some item and expect that to be worth more in the future.
saving you have X of some item and try to make it grow by some percentage over time.

hoarding is stuffing your mattress
savings is making loans

you on the reference or non reference card?  reference has fan at the end, non reference has fan in the middle.
1384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has this been done or thought of yet here ? on: May 29, 2011, 06:37:57 PM
what mechanism of enforcement do you propose?  if it is simply forum reputation I have bad news....
1385  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BitCoin futurism on: May 29, 2011, 06:33:39 PM
short term the biggest change is that deflationary currencies encourage saving and investment in productive enterprise while inflationary currencies encourage consumption.
the downside is that people don't understand that the numbers are arbitrary units of measurement.  this causes such psychological effects as "wage stickiness" and thus people intuitively object to deflation.
1386  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Questions about inflation enforcement on: May 29, 2011, 06:32:35 PM
Inflation above zero but below the growth of the world economy still results in deflation in terms of prices.
1387  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could really use some answers to these questions on: May 29, 2011, 06:27:33 PM
see the silver crash of the 80's when a group tried to corner silver.  The people who tried lost over a billion dollars.  The tighter you squeeze a free market the more explosively it hits you in the face.

so?  just like with gold receipt issuance you can simply profit from the inevitable shakeups by simply holding physical gold/bitcoins.

feel free to help me hash  Grin

two questions:

why is a simple majority and not a super majority or qualified majority of some type needed?  couldn't this be changed?

why doesn't the ownership of bitcoins themselves give you some sort of veto power similar to stockholders?  After all the biggest holders of bitcoins have the LEAST incentive to devalue their own holdings.  Currently there are two components to influencing the network: running clients and hashing power.  Neither of these necessarily involve holding lots of bitcoins.  gmaxwell pointed out that you could trade bitcoins for influence in either of the two components, but I'm not sure it makes sense to have to "sell stock" to "vote".

at the very least clients with large wallets associated with them should have proportionately more power in resisting changes to the underlying protocol.

I would have to agree.  Talking to someone who operates a pool would be best as the rank and file bitcoin enthusiast doesn't necessarily have a lot of technical or economic knowledge.

nothing other than normal startup beep when I get a shutdown so far.

I guess I'll get a new 600+w PSU for the overhead.
1393  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What Mh/s are you mining at? on: May 29, 2011, 03:44:59 PM
average in eligius is around 260 IIRC.

1395  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cheap XFX 5850 seems unstable when OC'd on: May 29, 2011, 03:02:03 AM
weird.  I havent touched memory clock...

just looked at specs page and they all say 1000mhz is stock.

well at the very least running stock numbers is stable.  I was worried.
1396  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cheap XFX 5850 seems unstable when OC'd on: May 29, 2011, 02:42:29 AM
I was at 100% fan speed at 800/1000 temp 71C when I crashed.  Did I just get a really unlucky card or was it perhaps a fluke of settings?

I'll probably try again tomorrow when I have some more patience about waiting for my computer to reboot.

also: currently using MSI afterburner.
1397  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cheap XFX 5850 seems unstable when OC'd on: May 29, 2011, 02:36:40 AM

I got 4 of these a few weeks back I do 880/350 mem and get about 350mh with pheonix+phat miner. One of the cards is a little bitch and I had to set it at 850/350 to stabilize it. Other than that they have been working fine other than my friends diamond 5850 did 410Mh without any effort.

temps?

also how do you use the phoenix back end for guiminer?  I select new openCL miner and then the bitcoin directory comes up and asks me to select a miner.

I was really weirded out by getting a crash at 800/1000 randomly after 10 minutes.

Also: what ballpark increase did the downclocking of memory give?
1398  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cheap XFX 5850 seems unstable when OC'd on: May 29, 2011, 02:33:38 AM
up to 900 mhz seemed stable for the 3 minute bursts I was doing before bumping it up a little more. my temps were 88C anywhere between 850-900.  at stock 725 core temps are 75C.

I think I'll let it run stock for a day at least and then maybe when I'm less frustrated try memory underclocking.  crashes take like 5 minutes to get back up and I get impatient way too fast.
1399  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cheap XFX 5850 seems unstable when OC'd on: May 29, 2011, 02:22:28 AM
I thought that I was looking for advice, since everyone seems to be getting 300Mh with 5850's, was implicit.  My bad.
1400  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cheap XFX 5850 seems unstable when OC'd on: May 29, 2011, 02:18:04 AM
that's what I was thinking because if it crashes when I'm gone that downtime starts eating up any small gain I would have had from OC.

what about the stream SDK?
