141  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: [Help!] ASRock H81 Pro BTC Build Questions on: February 18, 2014, 02:52:33 PM
i've just ordered 4x 280x and ASROCK H61 Pro BTC and now i'm not sure how many powered risers should I get?

1x PCI-E 16X–16X and 3x PCI-E 1X–16X would this be the best?

reddit thread about mining with this board (look it up easy to findp)says to not use POWERED risers since you use molex to mobo instead or you will burn something

2018 $18,000 (US votes for BitCoin backed Dollar)

As in "The FED announces it has all USD backed by 18kUSD BTCs"? Do the math how far off you are even if they had 21 million bitcoin by that date. That would put US M1 to 21MɃ * 18k$/Ƀ = 378G$ << 2.7T$

Good point math champ!  Question then, if BitCoin were to replace 100% of the world's fiat tomorrow, how much would 1BTC be worth in USD?

Define the world's fiat and do the math yourself.

The world is valued at 400T (trillion) USD currently.

Because USD will die, we can only use the relative figures.

Most of the financial system serves absolutely no legit purpose (except to siphon wealth from producers to puppetmasters via innumerable methods).

When all that is destroyed, BTC can perhaps store 25% of value, which is 100T at current prices and would be 8M per bitcoin in purchasing power. (I would use 5 million to be on the safe side)

Still need to get to $300k first.  Smiley

It's happening very soon.

How do you know? Im looking for info but so far no-thing interesting found
144  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Buy coverage for hardware overclocking modding.Who offers this? on: February 17, 2014, 06:00:15 PM
I want to overclock & mod my gpu.But Ive never done that before and even though Im able to do it I just want to play it safe.

Ive seen squaretrade offers coverage for gpu but doesnt say for what exactly. Plz reply.
145  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: HARDware (not software!!!!) warranty. on: February 17, 2014, 05:42:42 PM
You could ask the seller to post on eBay and warranty through squaretrade.

http://www.squaretrade.com/our-coverage

I was looking on what ecatly do they cover and no info.So do they cover modding over/volt/clock/ing? Anyone I can buy warranty for that?

Question 1: Would this be overkill in terms of wattage? Perhaps I can save $50 and go with two 1000w? And how should I connect everything up.. 4 cards on one psu and the system + 2 cards on the other?

You'll want to use a PSU calculator to determine how much approximate power you'll be need. http://www.pcpower.com/technology/power_usage/ shows max ranges, most of these are pretty high. Here's a good link to get an idea of the Power Consumption of 280x cards http://www.overclock.net/t/1454426/r9-270-underrated-the-holy-grail-of-mining-rigs-2-important-metrics.

I've heard of people linking power supplies together so they get turned on at the same time, how do I do this and is this necessary? What do they mean by "do not mix" when doing this.

Organik is right on, you can use a paperclip or even an industrial staple to short the 24 pin, you just insert it into the pin with the green cable, and a black ground pin. You can then setup your BIOS to turn the computer on when you power it on. Otherwise you can use a screwdriver (plastic handle) to short the motherboard to start.

I have 6 USB powered risers.. some of the posts I've read from people make me nervous about this whole power concept. But my plan now is to connect the two molex on the motherboard up, as well as connect all six powered risers to each card. I guess I'm concerned about frying the motherboard or the cards. Hopefully someone can give me some advice here on the plan.

I wouldn't worry about this, the risers are 25W max additional load. The powered risers will pull from the PSU (if I'm not mistaken).

Last thing. Your RAM is overkill unless you plan to game too. 2 GB max, the idea is low power for everything but the GPUs. Use Linux and a USB thumb drive (I use 8 dollar ones). Honestly, I wouldn't got with 280x, but that's up to you.

 2Gb Max, Really?

i saw a post somewhere that said 8Gb RAM for 6x R9 290s..

Isnt more RAM better wrt mining?

I ll just find out and post about my findings. Also Ive read anyway someone's post of having less than 2gb is much more than he needed anyway since in task manager cgminer used about 256 mb but the rest was used as cache by windows.

ok thank you very much. so what else except receipt for warranty?
148  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Im using 6 mining comparison charts to find best hashrate submitted. Can I really on: February 16, 2014, 07:29:47 PM
Honestly, it all depends on the environment the card is ran in too.  Also, I'm assuming you don't want to be one of the idiots that runs their cards at 85*C constantly all day long.  It is so loud and hot, and your card will burn out significantly faster.

I'd say the upper limit for a 7950 could theoritically be that high, but you would not want to put that much strain on the hardware.  Especially once you reach the point with a card where your fan speed goes up 30% and the temp goes up 30*C for a minimal hashrate increase.

If you are serious about getting the most out of your cards, please see this page:

✰ Optimized scrypt kernel files for 7950/7970/7990/R9 280x ✰

Most people aren't aware that by replacing one file in their cgminer directory, their current power and overclock settings will yield 20-30% more hashrate on average!

thank you this is a very good useful find!
149  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: HARDware (not software!!!!) warranty. on: February 16, 2014, 06:48:50 PM
It's not easy. Most manufacturers won't give warranty to the 2nd owner or if the cards have more than 2 years. XFX had lifetime in some items.

I suggest you don't go "all in" on 6950's anyway. I have an ASUS 6950 doing great, while I managed to burn a Gigabyte. You will burn the Rams or VRMs in the Summer operating at 550Kh/s which requires 1.175V and ~1Ghz core. In practice they only reach ~500 Kh/s at 915Mhz, 1.1V and are power hungry (almost twice) when compared with new R9-270's like the Gigabyte R9-270 OC or Sapphires. That means more cost on PSUs and power each month. The R9-280 and R7-265 are coming, so are new Nvidias that may suck less for mining. Even if they aren't the best, this alleviates the price of ATI's somewhat.

Thanks I like your reply very much but this is the most important question:

Because of the fact that they cant know you bought it used what should i ask the used card seller for so i can "prove" the company I owned it all the time? (receipt or what?)

ok so ive found 6950 for 150 usd used.I havent checked all the cards yet but this offer is the best so far in the hash/usd ratio. 550/150 =3.(6)   (3.6666and so on)

Im finding more good offers of used cards. So what are the requirements to have warranty?

Smartphone Kill Switch Could Become Federal Law

Quote
On Thursday, US Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) introduced national legislation to require a way to disable smartphones remotely. The goal is to deter theft and protect consumers, but this defense against thieves might come with greater vulnerability to hackers, according to a mobile industry trade group.

WITH CELL PHONE THEFTS SURGING, KLOBUCHAR, MIKULSKI, BLUMENTHAL, HIRONO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO REQUIRE A “KILL SWITCH” ON SMARTPHONES TO DETER THIEVES, HELP PROTECT CONSUMERS [from themselves.]

The way I see it, this comes from the school of never-let-a-crisis-go-to-waste, in this case, blame thieves who've taken advantage of idiot consumers to advance an agenda.

Make no mistake, next are all internet-connectable devices, the same devices currently used to remit payment freely, i.e. Bitcoin.

~TMIBTCITW

It's already here.

read this:

http://www.osnews.com/story/27416/The_second_operating_system_hiding_in_every_mobile_phone

I'm not aware of any commercial phone available where the baseband processor OS is opensource.

That's the reason why everyone mustn't install any wallet software on their smarthphone. Once you gain control of the baseband processor you gain root on main OS.

as with all "All in or no-thing"
all open source device or just part of it which is still nothing ie not enough

7950 can't get 900+ KH/s no matter what, so let's get this out of the way. If you'd pay attention, the hashrate at coinpolice was faked, some random person added there 2000 KH/s which upped the average by a lot.

what should i do if i get that worse Hynix /Elpida? Just return it and buy another one?
If you got them that means that in the first place you couldn't tell which type of memory your card has, so it's pointless to return and gamble again. What you can do however, is contact this guy: https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=12369.0
Read his post and you'll understand.

If i overclock/volt and max it out completely how much less lifetime will the card have?
Dunno, never overvolted and never will so I haven't got a clue how quickly the card will burn out. But one thing is certain, you will kill your card a lot faster than it normally would and I honestly can't see a reason to overvolt.

You know much more than I could find on search engines  Grin

Ive read the post and it says that Hynix has two variants: AFR and MFR. AFR is best then elpida and MFR is worst. The cause of being bad are the bad timings.Upload bios and send him donation so he will fix it.

"The ballpark value for the normal hash rate for Tahiti based cards is around: (Shaders * GPU Clock in GHz) * 0.34 >> (2048 * 1) * 0.34 = 696kHash/s."
This formula is very interesting it allows me to predict hash rate. How accurate is it? Where do 0.34 come from? can you explain formula?
156  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Im using 6 mining comparison charts to find best hashrate submitted. Can I really on: February 16, 2014, 10:10:47 AM
so can I get that hashrate? Come on dont make Me wait so long to choose card to buy?
Nobody is forcing you to wait. You opened this thread over a month ago and you could of already bought something if you were serious.

Don't look at the max possible hashrate you see. Best thing for you to do is calculate the average of all the numbers you see and go under the assumption that that's what you'll get.

You could be lucky and get a card with Hynix AFR which will give you better results or be unlucky and get Hynix MFR which will give you below average results (neither of which you can know before you buy the card, unless the store lets you open the box and see the S/N).

For your question: Probably you could, but at what cost? (reduced longevity of the card, increased electricity bill, etc).

what should i do if i get that worse Hynix /Elpida? Just return it and buy another one?

also what does the MFR AFR  stand for?

If i overclock/volt and max it out completely how much less lifetime will the card have?

ive just seen comparison on number of transistors and all that and there is no difference except clock speed. There might be one pci-e slot less so less power it depends if the brand (like Sapphire) added one.

So probably there is no need to flash 270x bios unless it will maybe allow yout o increase voltage etc more
159  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Im using 6 mining comparison charts to find best hashrate submitted. Can I really on: February 15, 2014, 11:30:59 PM
can i really get 908kh/s with any 7950 card?

Absolutely not.  600-680s

even litecoin comparison shows 730 kh/s for the card
So why are you saying that?

These are very different in results. Also they dont consider things like everything underclocked except overclocked gpu and that gpu will use more power than in gaming.Since there is no info on net then you just have to find it yourself with a ACCURATE powermeter.
