141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Pirate Bay as Blockchain? on: November 27, 2012, 04:34:24 PM
TBP is just an index, so if the idea is to store the data so that users can recreate the index from scratch, a distributed datastore like Freenet or Tahoe-LAFS would do. People can run their own indexing site as a hidden service for convenience of the casual user.

A blockchain based solution is useful if ownership and authenticity is a concern, but it doesn't seem to be in this case.

he wrote:

Quote
2: What metadata could and should be reasonably and sensibly added to the blockchain, keeping in mind that with each torrent on The Pirate Bay you have: magnet link, description, comments, possibly an image, some user id, a time stamp and possibly more.

3: Could dynamic updating of content work in the same way? For example if someone wanted to add a torrent to the pool, how, in the blockchain style, might it be able to be flagged as good or bad?

...i wonder, really, if anyone even read what he wrote before responding?

i don't think that solves any of the problems he's asking about matthew.

It solves this problem exactly so I don't know what your talking about. Plus someone would have to rewrite the block chain so no one can change it, probably too much work for a non-profit site like them.

no, because he's not asking you to "solve it" in another way. he asked some very specific questions because it sounds like what _he_ wants to do is attempt something like he describes. everything else is off-topic.

can anyone answer those questions?

this is a really cool idea! mods, can we move this thread somewhere else, so that it can be seen by relevant people?

Any idea where it should be moved to?

wherever the discussions of namecoin go, i suppose.

148  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: could kim dotcom start his own blockchain? on: November 22, 2012, 12:08:09 PM
but why not? bitcoin doesn't seem to have many users right now, and certainly there are never very many clients online at a time, according to those maps and charts.

think about it: if there is some downloadable, p2p component to mega, he could embed a cryptocurrency client into it and ta-da, we've got a bigger one than bitcoin itself.

I don't think he's big enough to supplant Bitcoin in that way. Maybe Google could.

Perhaps. I think they are more likely to use bitcoin though. Its perfect for google wallet.

Knowing how they like to track everything Im sure they could think of interesting ways to use the block chain......
149  Economy / Speculation / what the heck triggered that spike? on: November 22, 2012, 09:14:05 AM
and there it was, boom!

what happened?
150  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / could kim dotcom start his own blockchain? on: November 21, 2012, 07:46:36 PM
if i were in the position of being able to open something up to millions of people at once, and know that they were going to adopt it, i would probably not adopt the existing currency, but make my own.

if he did that, i think he would have far more users and value in the system than 'we' would.

what do you guys think?
151  Economy / Speculation / Re: Stability of bitcoin? on: November 18, 2012, 10:16:55 AM
Usually when you see these "stability" threads you soon find that the price starts not being stable anymore.

this is actually true.
152  Bitcoin / Project Development / REQUEST: mac toolbar mtgox btc ticker on: November 16, 2012, 04:26:56 PM

159  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Help wanted: Mac developer with OSX 10.5 on: November 08, 2012, 12:39:23 PM
Gavin, thank you for your thoughts.

For those interested in getting the 0.7.1 Bitcoin-Qt binary compiled for OSX 10.5, please download it from here:
http://www.coinuploads.com/downloads/38d71029e5ac845e6dd171a20e44fcb6

I set a price on the download of 10 cents. This way I get both the pleasure of receiving tokens of appreciation for the hard work of setting up the development environment and investment of time as well as keeping stats of how many folks actually downloaded the file Smiley

nice idea dan!

do you think you could also make a powerpc port using the same method?
160  Economy / Speculation / why is the price holding stable? on: October 19, 2012, 11:11:32 AM
i constantly feel like there is a long-game manipulation being played. pump it up to a price, hold it there so people are psychologically accepting of btc's value at a certain price, then raise again.
