141  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Are there any pools that don't mind botnets? on: March 13, 2012, 01:43:09 PM
Of course this would require work and money on the part of a botnet operators.  Operators are leeches of society.  The idea to actually do a token amount of independent work is a concept completely foreign to them.  They simply expect pools to to take their extremely unprofitable, server crashing workload AND be happy about it.

while that can often be true, botnet developers have matured considerably.  its turned into a multi-million dollar industry and the operators/devs at the higher end, often treat it like any other business venture.
142  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: if you had 200 GH/s which is the most profitable pool? on: March 13, 2012, 01:36:42 PM
guys, again, i am not currently in possession of 200 GH/s.  i do hope to accumulate it over the short to mid term (am currently in research mode, not in purchasing mode), but i'm more interested in the academic comparison of solo vs pool, or p2p vs "normal" pool, at that hashrate, so i can plan accordingly.
143  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs - Bitforce Single and Rig Box on: March 13, 2012, 01:30:06 PM
I find it strange to advertise products, that don't exist.

On that note, I announced the Bitcoin Magazine before we even had the flatplan figured out. Is that dishonest or just over-zealous?

I'm actually asking. I personally think Butterfly Labs was over-zealous and they've already learned their lesson (as have we btw).

in my opinion announcing is fine, accepting full payment and missing delivery by months then potentially doing the same thing with a second product, while in the same vein, elevates from over-zealous to dishonest.

in short, it comes down to how far behind you fall before you deliver.  bfl's not delivering in quantity their first product, and asking for full payment of a $30k second product still 2months from delivery, is really pushing the line into the dishonest/unethical business practices area.

its one thing to have customers money fund manufacturing ramp up, its another to string them along and have them pay for prototyping, testing and waiting months for the "privilege".

hadn't gotten mine in about 24 hrs, which i thought was a fair point to assume they probably weren't coming.  just verified that they have come through.

146  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Free 4xSpartan 6 DIY design and schematics!!! on: March 12, 2012, 06:36:37 PM
i'm not at a level to understand all the tech details.  where is this from a dev standpoint?  could someone give the schematics to a manufacturer and get a reliable product?  whats the max hashrate?

I started using them because I own and run a small graphic design school and I have about 85 always on computers with high end graphics cards. I learned about Bitcoin from a student that said these cards could be used to mine bitcoins and he taught me about it. I started reading here and realized that Bitminter could be easily turned on and off using a timer in a simple script so I'm in. Everything I bought for everyone in my life last Christmas was paid for with Bitcoin.  Grin

that rocks.  whats your hash rate?

It fluctuates greatly by time of day and at no time are they all used to mine at once but 20-40 ghash is about what I get spread among several different pools.  I ramped up slowly to where I am now for fear of damaging the machines but it seems to be working.

very nice.  what is your electricity situation?  industrial rates?

Ha ha, I could have predicted the next question. The campus is mostly solar power, photovoltaic cell with solar radiant water heating systems. My building feeds back into the grid so much that we routinely get a check from the power company for back spinning the meter.

sounds like you have it made in the shade.  power usage is a massive part of the profitability equation.

152  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: if you had 200 GH/s which is the most profitable pool? on: March 10, 2012, 05:46:33 PM
most important aspect is maximizing profit over say a 6 month period.  during that period, i imagine variance would average out right?
153  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: if you had 200 GH/s which is the most profitable pool? on: March 10, 2012, 02:09:05 AM
that is correct, i neither have 200 GH/s, and if i was going to accumulate it, it wouldn't be on the back of gpu's.
154  Bitcoin / Pools / if you had 200 GH/s which is the most profitable pool? on: March 09, 2012, 11:46:11 PM
is there a difference besides the fees?  at that rate would it be more profitable to mine alone?

i got a single opinion that it would make sense to go with p2pool over solo mining.  just looking for a deeper pool of opinion.
155  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla's Response to TradeHill | Lies and Defamation? on: March 09, 2012, 02:58:19 PM
MPOE, i'm not sure why you have such a visceral reaction to the sale of domains, internet traffic and ad revenue, when it seems you don't have much knowledge or understanding of the business.

i don't have any information about the current revenue of sex.com, but at the time of the sale, in the court proceedings it was estimated to be generating between $50-500,000 per month.
156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stanford paper evaluating bitcoin on: March 09, 2012, 02:48:13 PM
i'm with deathandtaxes.  while there may be specific elements of the paper people long intimate with bitcoin may disagree with, overall the paper shines a positive light on bitcoin, and the fact that a major, very well respected academic organization is producing papers on bitcoin is a big win.

if you have the proper back ground, i suggest compiling a response to the authors.  a polite and professional rebuttal will most likely be very well received, and possibly checked up on, and possibly worked into the next version (if it comes).

158  Other / Off-topic / Re: If you're American and appreciate liberty, you need to leave. on: March 09, 2012, 04:14:09 AM
The Obama administration has essentially declared unilateral capacity for war. They can use military power in any way they choose with no jurisdiction under the American people's congress. Who do they claim they stand under? The UN and international bodies. 99% of the world's military power that is the US is under international jurisdiction.

As we speak, the TSA is being dispatched to roadway checkpoints across the US.

We are about to enter martial law.

This day will forever be known in history as the death of all liberty in the United States.

usually a link is provided with statements/claims like this.
159  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Got my BFL Single today and I'm raffling it away for 0.5BTC! on: March 09, 2012, 03:04:16 AM
You're not giving them away, you're selling raffles for them in a pyramid gambling scheme, where we don't know how many raffles are sold and therefore what our odds of winning are.

It is mildly depressing that the majority of the bitcoin community:

  • Jumps on this idea with wild excitement, with apparently no consideration of why it might be a bad idea to buy into this.
  • Discusses stuff like this in a forum where the "im in LETS DO THIS LOL!" posts can't be downvoted so that the "um guys, this is a pyramid/gambling scheme" comments get buried. (I'm looking forward to new forum software.)

Huh  am i missing something?  where is the downvote feature?
