I really don't understand the reasoning behind the CT papers... why would you need to hide the amount of money each transaction is worth, if you're going to have to give the key to the merchant you're dealing with so he can see if he gets paid in full?  Doesn't it just add one more step to transactions for no reason?
142  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Start a Gambling Site on: October 13, 2015, 08:43:56 AM
its still profitable uptill now, just make unique gambling site with unique prize will make your gambling site popular and at the end giving you profit

Yeah my game has definitely never been created or tried, but I believe it would become super popular once all the code is written and we figure out a way to host the site to a domain without running into legal troubles with government.
143  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 13, 2015, 08:36:33 AM
Who made the CT paper for monero? Was it smooth or someone else in relation to the core dev team? I haven't even bothered to try reading it because there's no chance I would be able to comprehend it... Is there a dumbed down version?

The TL;DR is - CT will add a "Amount Key" for viewing amounts being sent in transactions.

So you would have a view key, spend key, amount key.

But realistically, if you wanted to make a purchase from someone, you would have to provide the retailer the view/amount key right? Or atleast the amount key so he knows he's getting paid in full for his product or service right?

Ok, so I know this is an old thread.. but asks the questions that's been on my mind for a good while.  What if we think we have a really good idea for a new gambling game, but are stuck behind the legalities of not being able to create one because I live in the US?  Is there any way to legally go about making this website?

I'm not quite sure what the legalities are with creating/hosting a gambling website in the US, but I'm pretty certain that it's not good.  I would maybe try to find someone to host it for you? But then again, I'm not quite so sure about this stuff, and personally wouldn't want government busting down my door for creating some game I put up on the internet lol.
i believe its a legal gray area at this point, and no legal action is being taken against it. what primedice did some time ago barring US players from playing was a precaution more than anything. as for legalities, you could simply host the site in a server based in another country if you want to be absolutely careful.

But if I were to buy a VPS to host it on, would there be any chance of it coming to bite me/us in the ass? Like once it's on a server in, let's say Switzerland, the U.S. Government wouldn't be able to kick down our door, right?

For new people trying to start a gambling site, I would recommend using the moneypot API to build a gambling site. That way, you don't have to fund a bankroll, and you aren't suspicious, as you can't run with the money when you are using the moneypot API.

Yeah, me and the guy I've hired to develop the site were planning on doing that.. But unfortunately we hit a snag in trying to figure out a way to make the game public because we are both from the U.S., and don't know what to do about laws regarding creating online gambling websites... I think we might have hit a dead end, but would you know any way we could make this work/ be legal?

Hey I'm not quite sure if there was a google doc created for the campaign, but I was just checking to make sure I made the minimum post amount for the week, because I didn't receive any payment this week.

149  Bitcoin / Legal / VPS hosting and legalities of hosting gambling site made in U.S. on: October 12, 2015, 04:36:22 PM
So I was really wanting to try and open up my own gambling site, because I think I have come up with a great new idea for games to be created.  I was thinking that would it be possible to by pass some laws by purchasing a VPS server from, say, Switzerland and be ok hosting the site through there?  I don't know what I should do, all I know is that I have a pretty unique idea for a game.. and just don't know how to make it into a reality while earning some profit from my idea...

Any suggestions on what I should do to remain under the Fed's radar? Or should I just go ahead and try and apply for a gambling license... I don't know if that would be possible, where I'm located, because I don't live anywhere close to Nevada or New Jersey..

1) How do people think that bitcoin is actually anonymous? You would have to buy them with your debit card/credit card in which banks have your information... why would you think that this stuff is actually anonymous and could be used in such a way?

There are other fairly anonymous ways to buy bitcoin like from forum members or other face-to-face deals. After you have bought bitcoin, there are also means to loose the trail of your coins, making it harder for people to track your spending and ownership. Some would tell you that bitcoin is pseudo anonymous, I would say you can make bitcoin as anonymous as you need.

Just be careful buying bitcoins face to face in the US using localbitcoins. The newest fashion over there are undercover agents that are meeting people over localbitcoins and then arresting them and charging them. Freaking unbelievable!

Is that for real? I would imagine that that would only be applicable to people in NY due to the new laws regarding Bitcoin... Right?
I don't think so, just don't buy a lot at one time. Also be careful of people who will try to run with your money. Always to face to face transactions in a public place where there are lots of witnesses.

I don't think I feel quite comfortable with this... this makes me feel like I'm going to meet some "Heisenburg" of BTC and the deal will somehow go wrong and I will be either shot or get my money/car stolen from me. I think for now I will just buy off exchange sites... I don't see how that way of buying bitcoin will be beneficial.

Also, she says thank you to her posts! She isn't really ready to invest, but she thinks it's interesting...

Wow, lucky me.  I've got some extra money coming in a bonus check and was going to buy more xmr with it.  I'm not trying to make threats.  It's going to be a decent chunk of money, but not a titanic amount.

I'm genuinely excited that someone artificially lowered the price for me.  Hopefully it holds long enough to for the Coinbase ACH buy to happen plus trading.   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Ughh, I want to go all in on this price too... the problem is, is that I spent my "extra income" for bitcoin on circle and is going to take 4 business days to get to me. I think by that time the price will be back to the normal amount  Undecided

Give Linux Mint a try, or Ubuntu. "Linux" may sound intimidating, but my parents use it (Linux Mint) and they're not computer-savvy at all. Here are only a few reasons why you should at least try it:

  • It's free.
  • It's very secure. Most linux PCs don't run antivirus software because it's just not needed. You can get antivirus software if you want (also free).
  • It's open-source, meaning, among other things, that people can browse the source code. This lets us verify that there is no spyware in the operating system. Microsoft spies on you, as does Apple, as does Google, as does AVG, etc. Not so with Linux.
  • Firefox comes with the above mentioned versions of Linux, as does LibreOffice. With LibreOffice, you can open/edit/save Microsoft Office documents in Microsoft format, or in other formats. So, there's no need to buy Word, Excel, etc.

Linux also generally uses less system resources. You could put Linux on the free part of your existing hard drive. You can dual-boot your hard drive and when the computer starts, you'd choose between Linux and XP. The linux installation DVD will partition your drive for you (make a backup first!). If you'd use Linux for nothing but a Monero node, you should be ok with a 40GB partition, but of course more space is better. If you don't have space and can't get another computer, you could just buy a separate hard drive and put linux and Monero on it.

As has been mentioned, Windows XP is not supported by Microsoft anymore. It's not a very secure system to begin with, and with no patches available, it becomes more of a target for hackers with each passing day. It's not a system I'd want my Moneroj on.

But if you have a Windows XP and downloaded Linux mint or any Linux software on there, could it then be classified as "safe"? I'm really trying hard to get a new wallet that's not on mymonero so I can get my cold hard XMR off the web... but I don't know how I should go about doing this.  I definitely don't have the money to buy another computer... Do you know why Linux hasn't superseded Windows, despite being a superior product?  Because Linux is not easy, is not necessary for the average customer, and Linux does not inherently make them feel important or carry status with it.  Monero can't afford to be Linux.  You can get on the anti-Apple bandwagon all you want (I'll agree with you in many ways), but their marketing is the fuck on point.

Unfortunately though, I think a majority of people who are ever going to want to carry Monero is going to be either Computer geeks, investors, or people paranoid about their government.  I'm the last two, but I agree.. it's all about marketing; and I think you can do a lot for XMR in the marketing field.  But we really need to "Apple-ize" Monero.

Dont try to make her understand and mess with her
Some gfs won't even try to understand us

well she asked very good questions, which means she is kind of interested Wink
i see this as good: if somebody dived this deep he deserves answers.

btw. thanks knightdk: very good compilation Wink

Lol, she is interested about everything which I love about her... I think she was just more worried that I was getting into something way over my head Wink

She's still asleep right now, I'll let her know of all the answers you guys gave... we got a little drunk last night and we were shooting the shit.  I think she's very skeptical about the security matters in cryptocurrencies because her dad is a IT guy that works for a pretty big corporation that deals with high clearance stuff... and the fact that the Chinese just hacked EVERYTHING they were doing and personal info about themselves and everything.

Which is surprising, because her dad is the kind of guy that knew my middle name before she did lol...  Grin Grin Undecided Undecided Undecided Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed
156  Other / Beginners & Help / My girlfriend has questions for the forum... on: October 11, 2015, 12:11:43 AM
Ok, so my girlfriend has recently asked me why I have been online for a while, and told her about the forum and why I invest my time and money into bitcoin/cryptos and it's forum.  She had a list of questions for me which I couldn't seem to give her the best answer to and found myself stumbling to come up with a short and direct answer.  She has asked the questions below and I would like to get an answer for each so I could tell her in a very easy way for me and her to understand.  I reworded her questions into away in which it would make the most sense.

Quote

1) How do people think that bitcoin is actually anonymous? You would have to buy them with your debit card/credit card in which banks have your information... why would you think that this stuff is actually anonymous and could be used in such a way?

2) How many people develop bitcoin? If it's a decentralized currency then if these people control how the currency works, how would that make it decentralized?

3) If it is a currency that can be used in a sort of anonymous way, then how can governments regulate it in a way to make sure that people aren't funding bad organizations like ISIS and drug lords?  "Harpua" has told me about what silk road was and the way the darknet markets work, but how can this be prevented?

4) My dad works in a government facility where he deals with high clearance documents in a high security facility.  His organization has just been recently hacked by the Chinese government and lost dozens of top secret information including SS#'s, locations of the homes of workers, basically any personal information about the workers of his business and his families (which includes me). How can cryptocurrencies ever be a secure enough form of transactions where governments and top notch hackers can't just find a way to hack into the blockchain database?

I found myself trying to sell her on why this form of currency is important and why it should be used.  But I couldn't find a reason why it is important without getting to sketchy businesses that need a sort of anonymous payment; like darknet sites.  Any simple explanations would be of real help, and she'll probably have more questions for you guys in the long run... we've been drinking and I'm trying to introduce her into the world of crypto which I have just been introduced to myself...

Thanks.

Is there a downloadable version of this that doesn't use Github?  I can't compile codes at all, and would be really nice to use a wallet like this.
158  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 09, 2015, 08:57:50 PM

Heads up:

Over at http://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets I'll be conducting a

HVIAmA (Halloween Video Ask Me Anything) tomorrow at 1PM ET about Monero

All of my answers will be in the form of videos, and with successive questions participants will unlock new halloween costumes.

This is a subreddit filled with people who like speculative and risky trades on the stock market and has showed a tepid reception to cryptocurrency in the past.  My job will be to convince them that Monero is not a scam, and is a genuine and honest project filled with good intentions.  It might be risky, but it's legit as it gets.

If you have the time, tune in.

If any of you guys are online right now, you should definitely check out this... Didn't know americanpegasus was such a comic rather than some crazy speculative neckbearded dork.  IMO, he's killing it and generally getting a lot of people's attention on there; so if you guys have time, come on out to /r/wallstreetbets and check it out.
159  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XMR] One Click Monero Miner on: October 09, 2015, 01:26:14 AM
I've tried this a while back and have had trouble working the miner... so I just stuck to just purchasing XMR for the mean time, but now I want to get into running a full node and mining.  I was wondering if this would be profitable with a 10 year old Windows XP AMD Athlon 64 CPU?  If so, do I need to install Linux and learn command lines to learn how to run this kind of stuff?
160  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: October 05, 2015, 02:37:25 AM
Just curious, I was reading in the IRC channel that someone by the name of "Wolf'" is planning on making an AMD miner... If this were to happen and I had a pretty old Window XP with an AMD Athlon in it, would it be worth trying to mine off of that? Or should I just stick with trying to get the node working on there? Oh btw I'm still trying to figure out how to run the node and am having no luck... So if someone could point me to a very newbie friendly step by step on how to do that I would be greatful.. Thanks.

Edit: the windows XP is from 2005 I think

What he is making is a GPU miner. If you have an AMD GPU then you could potentially use it. Athlon is a CPU not a GPU. You could potentially CPU mine but your own Athlon probably does not have AES-NI instructions and will therefore be inefficient.

Oh ok, sorry.. Im still very new to all this technical stuff. Looking forward to it being released though so I can possibly try it out, that is, if I can figure out how too lol.
