141  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-04-06]No Blocksize Increase Needed for Years, Argues Bitcoin Core Dev on: April 06, 2017, 04:16:29 AM
A Reddit discussion on increasing the bitcoin block size clarified why many are opposed to the bitcoin hard fork.

A poster asked Bitcoin Core developers to explain their vision on increasing the block size. The poster claimed to be “very strongly anti-Bitcoin Unlimited (BU) but mildly in favor of bigger bitcoin blocks. BU has been proposed as a solution to scaling the bitcoin network that will hard fork the bitcoin blockchain.

“Please, educate me on your view as to if the max block size should ever change, if not why not, if yes how,” the poster asked.

Block Size Change Needed

In response, a luke-jr, a bitcoin core developer, recognized the need to eventually increase the bitcoin block size. He said people are not running nodes since the full node percentage is far below the safe 85%. “If you ask people why they don’t run a node, the reason is often tied to the block size,” luke-jr wrote.

In addition, miners are skipping the validation task due to the amount of time it now takes to verify large blocks, he added.

Core developers have conceded all possible compromises for increasing the block size, luke-jr noted. Even Segregated Witness (a solution to address the bitcoin network scalability challenge that has garnered support from many bitcoin users), is being proposed with a block size increase to as much as 3 MB, luke-jr noted.

Urgency Not Needed

Luke-jr does not think an increase in the block size is needed at the present time. A 1 MB block size is sufficient for the near term. When that size no longer suffices, the Lightning protocol (a system that allows faster transactions by doing them off of the network chain) will likely be in production, improving blockchain efficiency. It could reduce 1 MB block usage to around 10,000.

Luke-jr conceded that a block size increase will eventually be needed, but this is several years if not decades away. The scalability problems could resolve themselves by that time.

The decision to support a hard fork, for its part, is one that the community makes, luke-jr noted, and not a niche group, be it miners, developers or anyone else. The majority of the user community has rejected hard fork proposals.

The developer further noted that he himself proposed a minimal block size increase in seven years, only to meet “significant opposition.”

No To A Hard Fork

While the Bitcoin Core team has invested significant time in research and development in a future hard fork, the solutions at the present time are unsafe.

In response to luke-r, one Reddit poster noted that they don’t run nodes on account of the hassle it requires, and that 300 KB blocks or a 1 MB block won’t change this. The greater factor in falling node count is the emergence of usable thin clients such as Electrum and MyCelium.

Another poster noted that block size is not the reason people don’t run nodes; it is the lack of incentive for doing so.

Still, another poster pointed out that incentives do exist when making regular transactions, but they were unsure that increasing the block size to as much as 5 MB would increase the node count.

142  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-04-06]Schism Developing Between Lightning Network and Bitcoin Core Develop on: April 06, 2017, 04:15:31 AM
Schism Developing Between Lightning Network and Bitcoin Core Developers
The latest developments in the Cryptowar are what appears to be a developing schism between some Lightning Network developers and contributors to Bitcoin Core after Joseph Poon, a Lightning Network developer, Stephen Pair from BitPay, Christopher Jeffrey from Purse and Fedor Indutny, published an extension blocks proposal that both increases on-chain capacity and fixes malleability.

Discussions are heated in somewhat private conversations with one source calling an exchange between Matt Corallo – a former Blockstream employee and Bitcoin Core developer – and Jospeh Poon, as “nasty.”

In semi-public discussions, Poon said yesterday that “the extension block proposal is… a litmus test for corruption in the Bitcoin community.” He further added that “Core is getting what they want (soft fork plus malleability fix), but oppose due to nonsensical reasons.” Before saying “without the ability to make pragmatic decisions Bitcoin as a project is stagnant and dying.”

Corallo said that “extension blocks are a very bad idea,” before adding that “much of the western businesses I’ve asked have no interest in any extension block proposal.” He was asked to name the businesses by a discussion participant but failed to do so.

Interestingly, Poon said that “a malleability fix simpler than SW is provided on the extension block and Lightning on the extension block is superior to SW.” David Chan clarified to say “lightning is safer because there is a baked in pre-allocated space for two LN transactions per extension block. Helps defend against the catastrophic cascade closure of LN channels.”

Poon told CCN that segwit can still be activated with small changes. Clarifying the on-chain capacity that would be added, he stated it would be 3MB, up to 9MB. He further said that “this includes a malleability fix whose individual component is smaller than segwit, as it does not use the weights and discounting.”

The main criticism by other Bitcoin Core developers appears to be regarding timing. Eric Lambrozo, for example, said it would “lead to further development delays since [it] will still require review, obligatory bikeshedding (i.e. determining DoS parameters), testing, implementation, building ecosystem support, adapting existing applications, etc…”

Some Bitcoin Core developers have called the proposal as “technically sound,” while others have used the general argument against soft-forks and applied it to extension blocks. Overall, it appears opinion among Bitcoin Core supporters, including developers, is mixed.

As for miners, CCN has learned F2Pool supports the proposal. Bitfury and BTCC have not yet clarified their stance. If they do support extension blocks, consensus might be within reach, especially as this proposal is a soft-fork.

That means a chain split is very unlikely according to the usual arguments in favor of soft-forks by Bitcoin Core developers. That’s because old nodes can continue to operate, rather than being cut-off the network as would be the case in a hard-fork. As such, it’s opt-in, according to the extension blocks proposers, as well as backwards compatible.

That also means unanimous consensus is not necessary because it’s opt-in. Those not in favor of the proposal can simply just not upgrade, continuing as they are, while others can use the new features, allowing both groups to co-exist within one chain.

It provides to both sides what they want, according to extension blocks proposers. The bigger blocks side gets on-chain capacity, Bitcoin Core gets a malleability fix, allowing for the Lightning Network and other layer two protocols.

A Grand Compromise?

“This latest move is technically very clever, and politically brilliant.” – Emin Gun Sirer, Cornell Professor, told Forbes. You’d think so, but we’ll have to wait and see as, despite providing a malleability fix, Blockstream current and former employees are strongly arguing against it. Their reasons, however, appear hallow. As stated earlier, they amount to general arguments against soft-forks (despite arguing in favor of soft-forks for years), and arguments that it would lead to further delays.

Poon said that extension blocks were implemented in two weeks, “we can test and deploy within months.” Alex Petrov of Bitfury gave a time estimate of around 5-6 months, that’s this autumn/winter.

If such timeline can indeed be achieved then bitcoin might come out stronger, but seeing as Blockstream employees seem to be against it, any merging in Bitcoin Core appears difficult. The proposers say they will flesh out the details, and while it’s not clear whether a pull request will be made, you’d think they will do so.

In such event, it will all come down to one man, Wladimir J. van der Laan, the current maintainer of Bitcoin Core, who has the power to merge the proposal or otherwise. If he does merge, as he did segwit despite it clearly being highly controversial, then the Cryptowar may be over. If he doesn’t, then so-long bitcoin.

Because this currency can’t continue for much longer with such high fees and sometimes delays of days to move value from a to b in this 21st century. And, while I have no views on this specific proposal, I’d welcome whatever breaks this stalemate because this entire debate is becoming far too boring.

Everything that had to be said has been said. It’s now up to businesses and miners to pick something and just get on with it or users and businesses will continue leaving, as will the focus and attention of those who do sort of continue to stay.

143  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-04-06]‘Bitcoin Should be Declared Illegal’ Demands Indian Politician on: April 06, 2017, 04:13:15 AM
An Indian politician who has previously raised his concerns on the growth of bitcoin in the country has, once again, urged the Indian government to weigh in on the cryptocurrency’s legality. More pointedly, the bitcoin critic is urging the Indian government to deem the cryptocurrency illegal.

Kirit Somaiya, a member of the Indian Parliament who belongs to the BJP, India’s conservative ruling party at the center, questioned if bitcoin is a ‘pyramid ponzi scheme’ during a session of the Indian parliament on March 24. At the time, the politician cited unnamed experts to base his concerns of the world’s largest cryptocurrency – now a legal method of payment in Japan – being a pyramid scheme and called for Indian financial authorities to regulate bitcoin.

In response, the Union Minister of State if Finance revealed a written reply to Somaiya, one that triggered much of the Indian media to falsely report that bitcoin was deemed illegal by the government.

A local report has since surfaced pointing to the formation of an ‘inter-ministerial’ committee installed by the Indian Parliament to study the legality of the popular cryptocurrency. It is speculated that the committee is tasked to give an initial announcement about its findings on April 20.

However, not content with these developments, Somaiya has once again raised his issue with bitcoin in India in the parliament on Wednesday afternoon. The bitcoin critic spoke during the ‘zero hour’, a session that starts at 12 noon wherein members of parliament are allowed to raise important subjects in the house.

In the Lok Sabha (the Lower house of the Indian parliament) session today, Somaiya opined that bitcoin was growing ‘without any restrictions’ in the “name of blockchain” technology. Unlike earlier, however, the politician has matter-of-factly stated that bitcoin is ‘illegal’ as a parallel currency. He then urged the government to ban bitcoin immediately, before drafting regulations for the industry.

Today again I raised Bitcoin issue in Parliament in zero hour It's illegal & unregulated in India Urged Govt for early action @BJP4India pic.twitter.com/zSpV5T9x5w

— Kirit Somaiya (@KiritSomaiya) April 5, 2017

Somaiya’s translated statements read:

Bitcoin trading worth ₹2000 crores (approx. $300 million, a day) has been initiated. This can also be used in underworld trading. Last week some students were caught dealing with drugs and LSD. In the name of block chain and crypto currency these kind of schemes are growing without any restrictions. The government has made a committee to address this. I urge them to declare this parallel currency illegal, and make rules and regulation to deal with it as soon as possible.

As it stands, the bitcoin industry remains unregulated in India with the Indian central bank issuing a public notice stating bitcoin companies in India were not recognized or approved by the authority. The notice, a rehash from December 2013, has spurred the Indian bitcoin industry to establish its own self-regulatory body and watchdog in February, one that approached Indian authorities but has yet to receive a response.

The Indian bitcoin industry has also launched a petition urging Indian lawmakers to declare the legality of bitcoin. Launched last week, the petition now sees over 10,000 signatures.

BlackCoin has been delivering content for payment for over a year now, with Paspagon. Why would I want to trust a 3rd party with storing my digital “for sale” items, when I can run it all myself and not involve a middle-man ? I see no mention of how much end users of Bitcache are protected or charges for this service … or even when it might actually be open to the public.I think i will stick with BlackCoin/Paspagon

I have long thought that the solution would be an all of the above kind of option. I do believe we need SegWit to activate and would love for this idea to get quick and thorough development and testing. The moment is coming when Bitcoin will get a huge influx of new users and money. When that happens, we will either be ready and go to a new level, or not and never do so.

So 260,000 stores ? It’s great news ! but Bitcoin is not able to handle a volume of 1 transaction per day per store right now. 300.000 is about the maximum per daily volume it can handle. + no instant transaction so how is that going to work ?

How to we learn a new language?
What is the most practical method of learning a new language?
What are the methods of learning that you apply and benefit you?
“If there’s a “secret” or “hack” to learning a new language, it’s this: hours and hours of awkward and strenuous conversation with people better than you in that language. An hour of conversation is as good as five hours in a classroom and10 hours with a language course by yourself.”
150  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-01-29]Watch Washington's Senate Debate If Buying Weed With Bitcoin is Bad on: January 29, 2017, 03:50:28 AM
Legislators gathered on Wednesday afternoon to hold a public hearing on a measure that would prohibit cannabis firms in the state of Washington from working with bitcoin.

CoinDesk reported last week that SB 5264, a bill presented by two Washington state senators, would ban businesses working in the marijuana industry from both selling products for bitcoin as well as purchasing them with the digital currency. At the time, primary sponsor Sen. Ann Rivers said that the measure was intended to boost financial transparency to the state’s cannabis sector as part of an effort to “help move it out of the shadows”.

The move sparked headlines and at least one petition aimed at stopping the measure in its tracks. Yet before the bill can become law, it has to move through the legislature, setting the stage for events like Wednesday’s hearing before the Washington Senate Commerce, Labor & Sports Committee.

The hearing drew a mixture of support and opposition for the bill, during which lawmakers asked a number of questions about the tech. Also appearing were representatives for the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, which has called for businesses in the state to shift toward electronic payments.

Among those speaking against the measure were representatives from Posabit, a bitcoin point-of-sale developer based in Seattle.

In remarks, co-founder and CEO Ryan Hamlin spoke about the concerns among cannabis business owners who face the risk of robbery – a trend in the US affecting marijuana shops that rely on cash because they’re effectively locked out of the banking system owing to the nature of their business.

Hamlin told committee members:

"Anyone can Google about the robberies that are happening. Cash in this environment is a problem."

Hamlin reiterated the focus on store owner safety, arguing that "we are removing cash from the system which is helping our customers become safer".

Yet another payments company servicing marijuana firms in the industry expressed strong support for the bill. PayQwick offers payment services to businesses and consumers in the space, as well as cash handling services.

Kenneth Burke, the firm’s CEO, invoked the newly-minted Trump administration and the as-yet-unconfirmed US Attorney General nominee, Sen. Jeff Sessions in his statements. Sessions, who according to Politico has called marijuana legal reform a "tragic mistake", is likely to enforce the federal ban on marijuana more decidedly than the Obama administration.

"I think allowing bitcoin in consumer transactions in Washington is just going to invite extra scrutiny from Sessions and the federal government," Burke told the panel.

On traceability

One point of contention during the hearings was the question of whether bitcoin transactions are traceable.

Among those was Burke, who argued that "with bitcoin, there’s just no traceability to it".

But on the contrary, every bitcoin transaction is published to the public blockchain. Instead of being attached to a particular identity though, bitcoins are attributed to pseudonymous addresses. Actual identification of a user happens outside of the bitcoin system itself, as in the case of an exchange conducting a know-your-customer process.

Joseph Cutler, a partner for the law firm Perkins Coie who is based in the Seattle area, disputed the notion that bitcoin transactions can’t be traced.

“This idea that it’s untraceable is simply false. People also say bitcoin is anonymous,” he told the panel. “This is also false. We like to call it pseudonymous, which is better than cash.”

Cutler went on to invoke once again the problematic use of cash in cannabis businesses.

“In the marijuana space, for example, cash is king,” he said, adding:

“And there is no traceability to the customers for the cash they’re using in those stores.”

Yellen
