141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 27, 2017, 09:09:41 PM
Maybe I missed a reparations post about Nicehash, but if they are not somehow compensating people for all or most of what was stolen from their NH balances, then why on earth would anyone go back to pointing hash in their direction?

For me, once a company screws me (whether it was directly or indirectly their fault), I will never give them by business again... even if they have the best deal going.  Case in point with that piece of shyt Craptopia. About 2-3 months ago, somebody hacked my account there and it was 100% the fault of Craptopia as I had 2FA set for all types of transactions. Their first major point of failure was not blocking my account after at least 10 failed attempted logins. They claimed that someone must have hacked my email to delete the auto warning messages generated from failed attempts but i have proven this to be untrue. And, even aside from that, for sure after 3 bad attempts, the acct should have been auto-locked! I mean wtf!  almost every legit site does that, but oh no, not Craptopia.  2nd major point of failure was that once in, the hackers couldn't just withdraw my ETH & BTC, they proceeded to trade it all for LTC, then convert the LTC to some unknown shytcoin, then sell that off at 3% of what they bought it at to obviously another account they had control over.

bottom line is that neither of those things should have been allowed to occur but Craptopia has (or had) some of the shyttiest protection ever known to man, so I lost about $1,600 because of it.  further, it took over 3 weeks to even get the full story (and most I had to research), ending with some idiot CS rep making excuses for why they would not compensate me for their failings... quoting some obscure verbiage from their policy manual that essentially says they are not liable for any losses that occur, not matter what the cause lol. Yeah, Im sure all exchanges have something similar to limit their liability, but you don't see major players such as Coinbase or Bittrex pulling this BS. In fact, they have both gone overboard in awarding compensation to their customers for issues that arguable were more their customer's fault than their own.

Anyway, sorry for the rant... but bottom line, I will not touch Craptopia with a 10-foot-pool now. Not even to cash out my Electronium since thats the only place to do so at present. I will simply wait until another exchange lists it.
142  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple (XRP) to be added to Coinbase? on: December 18, 2017, 10:29:45 PM
The thing i havent heard much about is nitcoin cash but isnt that a lock to be added to Coinbase? Their last update on Aug 30 said all customers would be credited on or about Jam 1st 18 and that cant happen without it being added right?  Ripple would be very likely if not for the ventralized control others mentioned. I think Dash has a. Ery good chance and possibly Monero. Finally i think Vardano has a legit shot as well. Would be great to see at least 3 of these 4 added in early 18... In addition to bitcoin cash.
143  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 17, 2017, 04:37:58 PM
Fwiw - I was a windows only guy. But phil and a few others here talking about smos all the time has me converted.  The only problem with smos is no wifi. Which I have a few rigs on wifi to spread them out throughout my house.

What's the big sell of Simple Mining over say nvOC?

simple mining  allows me world wide access via his website.

easy to manage as I have gear in multiple sites.

I now run:

5 rigs with buysolar and the solar array
3 rigs with my buddy Ira at his office
 5 rigs in my garage

26 a month  for next to perfect control

since I am mining about .6 zec a day  or 18 zec  a month .

I can pay the fees for ease of management.

Since buysolar is building a 3 stage of expansion array  about 75 minutes from our homes.

We will need ease of management  that smos provides.  we may do 17kwatts then 34kwatts then 51kwatts

that is about 17 rigs then 34 rigs then 51 rigs  over the next 2 years

nvOC  is free  but it is more difficult  to set up  access and switching and rig restarts.

if you have 1 location with under 5 rigs nvOC is fine.

Just want to say thanks for the detailed post above with regards to SmOS and windows requirements for than motherboard.

I currently run Windows only and don't have any issues. What would you say is the biggest drawback to SmOS? My concern is the speed of updates on miners. As currently I can compile new miners myself.

I have windows 10  on 2 rigs and I have windows 7 on one rig.

windows  simply needs more care then smos.

but  windows will allow more coins and al-gore-rhythms  then smos will.

and some mobos will  help windows issues as will some mobos will  hurt windows issues.

for bulk mining  like I do with say 27000-29000 sols  of zec in 3 soon to be 4 places smos is better then windows.

but if you do an exotic shit coin  windows is more likely to be able to do it.

I have been able to find a good coin  and send  hash  to it on windows  for months.

they are smaller hash rates so pointing say  3 1070's and 2 1080 tis  will do well.

pointing all the gear does not.

So I will keep windows around.

lmao... i got a good chuckle from your "Al-Gore" reference lol... good stuff!  And lest we all forget... AlGore not only invented the Internet, he also invented the entire CryptoCurrency ecosystem and is actually the REAL Satoshi Nakamoto ;-)

Bleh... ETN down 35% today, along with my holdings and my mining estimates.

Oh well, switching the RX 570 and Vega rigs to XMR on Nanopool now. It's pretty profitable as well. Not sure what I should do with last week's ETN mining proceeds... Take the hit now and exchange to BTC or wait for them to recover? Hmmm... Choices, choices... Tongue

-50% now. I wonder what caused this sudden drop? could'nt find anything

At this point it recovered to only be down 30%. The 1 thing that has been on most ETN holder's minds has been the eventual release of the ICO people's coins... via supposedly a real wallet lol.  In addition, the ETN team has publicized a re-launch to occur this week, and a lot of people were thinking the ICO coins would become available as part of that. The vast majority of people in that space were predicting a huge drop in price due to the liklihood of a lot of investors taking profits right away.  When i saw that 50% drop earlier i had just assumed that is what had happened but i havent had time to verify. I only mined about 7k so Im just holding no matter what since there's not much down-side with that small amount.

But, the other big problem with ETN is the lack of any good pools. I've tried 3-4 and all have been horrible, returning maybe 35-40% what they should have. That's why i went back to XMR on half my rigs but now with ETH over $700 I've got all 4 back on that.  Bottom line is that even if ETN shows as more profitable to mine vs XMR, it is simply not true... at least until they get the pools functioning correctly.

I've been wasting most of the day staring like a fool at the crazy BTC-ETH-LTC activity on GDAX. It's simply insane how much activity is flowing through just that 1 exchange! Then a few minutes ago it appears to have crashed. I know Coinbase is and has been actively working to increase their capacity but even with that, it appears they still cannot keep up with this craziness 100% of the time. \

edit: ok, it's back already lol. only about 5-6 minutes of down time Wink
146  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Best pool for mining Monero? on: December 12, 2017, 07:19:40 PM
some days ago i found out, one more popular monero compatible pool with very low withdraw 0.12 xmr
name of the pool dwarfpool link easyly find on google

yeah ive been mining XMR here for close to a year with good results but lately it's been returning way too many low diff shares and that's hurting my earnings.  That's why i came to this thread because looking for good alternatives in the US.
147  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 12, 2017, 02:59:57 AM
Yeah, sadly I missed the boat on LTC.  Almost bought into it way back when it was at $4 but didn't then could never pull the trigger since I kept thinking back to that $4 mark... even when it was at $10 and $20.  Same myopic thinking that has kept me out of IOTA... was super close to buying about $1k worth while at .33 cents (only 2 weeks ago) but got side-tracked and next thing i know it's at .90 cents, so I figured too late, I missed the boat... only to see it now pushing $5 and #4 total market cap coin... although now LTC has passed it. Oh well... hindsight is 20-20 lol.

On the mining front, I think i am finally done mining ETN.  Yeah, it's been #1 supposedly for profit on rx 470s for some time now but in reality, it's not because of all the issues with that network. I just tried my 4th pool and my 3 day returns were only 41% of what the mining calculators say. not only that but I suspect that ETN price will tank once the ICO wallets are activated, so i pointed those 2 rigs back onto XMR... which is right now pushing hard to hit $300!

Still checking the big sites daily for the new round of Vega's to come in. Seems like it should be any day now. I need 2-3 more to complete a killer Cryptonote rig.

Ethereum Wallet taking aaaaaaaaaaaages to sync today... 1-2 blocks per second... and I've got over 47000 to go... Is there a way to speed up the damn thing?

Those damn cats are jamming the ETH network.

Yeah exactly! Crypto Kitty mania has taken hold!  Just insane how much congestion that is causing... something like 50% of total ETH transactions or something insane like that!  Maybe Buterin should be focusing on this instead of his constant BS about moving ETH to POS.
150  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Anyone else getting "one more step" captcha pages on Crypto sites? on: December 07, 2017, 08:37:36 PM
Hey everyone... a couple of hours ago I started getting this "one more step" pages when trying to enter most crypto related sites... like this one, coinbase, even mining pool sites. This requires a check of the captcha box to prove you are human before getting to the site's home page.  I am getting those on 2 different PCs but not my work PC, which might be because that is going through a VPN.

Anyway, I am just a bit concerned because this just started showing up so wondering if others are seeing it too.
151  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 07, 2017, 08:02:30 PM
Has anyone else been getting these "one more step" pages appearing where you have to click the "Im not a robot" captcha box to proceed to the site?  Starting about an hour ago i am getting these on pretty much every crypto-related site, including this one, coinbase, even mining pool pages.  Happening on 2 of my PCs but not my work PC (VPN).  Just trying to make sure there is not something bad going on with my PCs.
152  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How are you finding graphics cards? on: December 07, 2017, 02:00:30 AM
ebay... if you don't mind paying close to 2x retail for Vega lol Wink   Seriously though, I read a couple articles lately saying that the supply chain should be filling up again with more reference Vega's and the beginning of the custom Vega's that both XFX and Asus already have showing on their sites (not in stock of course).  Sadly, cannot use auto-notify when these products dont even have pages, as is the case with Vega 56's on newegg.  But once they appear that is a good option. Will be interesting to see what the limit is... likely 1 or 2 i suppose.  but If they are anywhere close to retail they will be gone in minutes since those things can earn $8-10/ day at current rates on Cryptonote coins.  I luckily got 3 Vega 56 at about $440 each a few weeks ago but looking to snag 2 more to build a 5x rig.
153  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 06, 2017, 03:17:57 AM
Anybody notice what XMR did the last couple of hours?  Crazy it went over $300 a couple places!  I jumped in an transferred a few over to bittrex where it was the highest of the 3 exchanges i am on and converted a few to Tether.  Interesting that there was about 10-12% spread between bittrex and Polo, so sending to bit was a no-brainer, especially since i was just converting to USDT.  I also dumped a little bit of DASH and DCR, just to hedge a bit in case there's a pull back on the horizon.

Not sure if any of you are mining ETN but it got de-listed from whattomine recently.  Still though, at .10 now it's still easily #1 profit if you can find a good pool.  There are a lot of dicey ones that either dont' report stats well or go offline way too much.  I switched over to hashparty.io about 4-5 hours ago and it seems pretty solid so far. Still have half my rigs on ETH+DCR though due to all the problems with ETN... don't really wanna commit all my miners there should it all blow up overnight lol.  Still, hoping to get my Vega rig up and running by next week as that thing is gonna kill on ETN or XMR. Still need to find 2 more Vega 56's so hoping to see some hit the market soon.
154  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [LAUNCHED][POW]⚡ELECTRONEUM⚡Official Moderated Thread on: December 05, 2017, 10:19:13 PM
Hello everyone... hoping someone here can help me with a pool/mining issue....

I pointed 2 of my 4 rigs over to ETN about 20 hours ago. I started out on pool.electroneum.space as I was mining there about a week ago.  I noticed right away that there were big connectivity problems, which is why i stopped mining ETN last week, but now they were way worse.  So I switched both rigs over to the "official" US pool... uspool.electroneum.com.  After a few minutes, both my hashrate showed up on their tracking page and since then my total hashes have also been increasing at about the expected rate.

However, my "total ETN paid" has been stuck at the exact 222 it was when i re-started mining here yesterday. Shouldn't this total be increasing at least sporadically?  Is there something wrong with this pool where it is not paying out despite showing active hashrate and hash accumulation?  Or is it likely actually paying to my wallet, just not reflected here due to some kind of flaw in the site?

I still need to merge/convert my paper wallet to the CLI wallet, so I don't currently have a way to check my actual ETN balance.

I also just tried setting this up on Suprnova but when trying to set the settings for ETN i got locked out for some reason and have no yet recieved the email notification on how to reset.

So, given this, are there any other decent ETN pools anyone is using currently?  Would be nice to actually see my balance increasing.
155  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 04, 2017, 12:57:23 AM
Thanks to all show have posted good info on Nvidia GPUs. I still hope to build that GTX rig in the near future but think I will build a Vega 56 rig first since I already have 3 of them sitting here that I luckily got for about $430 each (avg cost). Was really trying to find a 4th but they are completely gone from OEMs and retailers and now even used ones on ebay are going for ~$600!  Sorry, but i refuse to pay at least 50% mark-up from the $400 retail on these things, even if it means going with a 3x rig for now.

My question for those who are running Vega's... are there any different components needed to support them, as per say, vs am Rx-470 rig?  I'm assuming my ASRock BTC R2 mobo will suffice, but what about the CPU & RAM?  I just ordered a couple G3260's to fit that 1150 socket (previously used G3258s but those are pretty much gone)... assuming this should work with Vega right?  but what about RAM?  I've heard some saying that you need higher rated/speed RAM to fully utilize the HBM2 in those Vega's but does anyone know if this is true?  My rx470 rigs are all using 2x4GB DDR3 1600. Will that be sufficient to run these Vega's?

I'm running a rig of 8 Vega's 64 Sapphire. It has 4 Gb Corsair ram and a Skylake Pentium G4400 processor. I've tried also on a Celeron G3930 Kaby Lake and it's working. Just remember to set at least 8Gb virtual memory / GPU in Windows.
Hash ~1860/GPU and power consumption 1240W at wall, running stable since days.

Thanks for the info Bogdan... can I ask what specs your RAM is on that rig?  DDR3, DDR4?  1600Mhz or faster?  Trying to make sure that DDR3-1600 will be sufficient as that is the best my Mobo can take. Thanks also for the power numbers... this tells me I should easily be able to get 4 Vega 56's running on my EVGA 1KW PSU with plenty of headroom to spare.

I'm using this RAM: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMV4GX4M1A2400C16-Select-Desktop-Memory/dp/B072LRMXGN/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512293273&sr=8-1&keywords=corsair+value+select+ddr4
From my experience with Vega, I would say speed it's not important. Just make sure you have at least 4 Gb Ram.
With your 1KW PSU you can run 6 Vega, you should have ~950W at the wall after tweaking and undervolting.

Thanks for that... i went ahead and ordered my standard 2x4GB DDR3 1600 that I have in my 4 rigs to date.  I'm not sure I will try to put 6 Vega's on this build, as 950w is a bit closer than I like to be on PSU headroom. But certainly I will strive to get 5 up, running and tweaked and see what my power draw is.  Luckily i have 3 ready to go but still need to get a hold of 2 more.  I saw some going for close to $700 on ebay which is simply insane... but that's what continually rising crypto prices will do as we saw earlier this year with the huge run on RX-400 GPUs.

I did read a couple of places recently that there are supposedly more Vega's headed for the retail market soon... both reference & custom varieties. Hopefully that will happen in the next 1-2 weeks.  Looks like it's going to be back to hourly checks of newegg and other outlets lol... in the hopes of getting 2 at close to retail $ before they sell out again.
156  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 03, 2017, 12:55:20 AM
Isn't the new Coinbase/IRS deal that they have to report any user that does $20,000.00 in transactions in a single year?  If it's $20k in a single transaction then I doubt we will ever have that ourselves. Since we make records of everything anyways we will be paying taxes either way, but it would actually be nice to receive tax forms from Coinbase rather then doubling our paperwork that we have by doing it all manually.

I hear ya about getting a form from CB to tie out to, but the vast majority of heavy lifting tax wise is calculating your basis, something which CB will have no way to provide... so little help in my mind.
157  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 03, 2017, 12:53:02 AM

I don't know why  you won't use coinbase  but if you have never used coinbase and don't have an account setup  thats a reason.

Very simple actually - I had a fully verified account in 2013 they froze for no reason. Fought them for months on it and basically ripped off a very large chunk of coin from me. During that time and even now there have been hundreds upon hundreds of people they've done this to.

To each their own, if you're comfortable using them by all means, I'm just more comfortable handling large sums of cash in person.

Thanks Phil... I have a bit of confusion on the Coinbase/IRS ruling coming from the wording, but I will address that below. First, thanks for the tip about not using ebay for BTC sales (I assume this is valid even through LocalBitcoins?).  I personally really like the functionality and capabilities of Coinbase but my hesitation is continuing to use them to cash out BTC to fiat is indeed based in this IRS issue.  since I have my mining registered as a business and file the taxes accordingly, I certainly plan on paying whatever tax I owe for this year when it comes time to file. However, I simply was looking to avoid and extra layer of scrutiny that could be caused by the IRS getting my transnational info from CB.  I am keeping good records and have a good understanding about how crypto taxes are treated under current law, but due to the high complexity of multi-coin trading and how that effects your actual basis when you sell, I have do desire to have my math 2nd guessed by the IRS.

So, with that said, there are 2 statements coming from this article (and others) that could be construed as having completely different meanings in regard to the $20k rule.  Now granted, I know this is only from 2013-2015, when i didn't trade any BTC, but I am going under the assumption that the same materiality threshold will be put in place for this and subsequent years, which is what has me concerned.

http://fortune.com/2017/07/10/bitcoin-irs-coinbase/

- excerpt #1: "...only for those accounts that engaged in transactions worth $20,000 or more."
to me, this verbiage indicates the $20k threshold refers to a single transaction. Meaning, like you explain, if you have say 15 sells of BTC to USD for $2k each and spread out over time, you would have $30k total but would not be part of the record forwarding since all single transactions were well under that $20k amount.

- excerpt #2: "to users with “at least the equivalent of $20,000 in any one transaction type (buy, sell, send, or receive) in any one year during the 2013-15 period.”
To me, this could mean that if you sold a SUM TOTAL of $20k+ of BTC for fiat through CB, you would be subject to the record forwarding.

So, to me it comes down to the difference between "transaction", which clearly indicates a single action... vs "transaction type", which really seems like it could mean a sum total of that transaction type.

It is also a bit strange that they include buy send and receive because none of those inherently indicate a tax liability. Typically, one would only incur a potential liability if they sold BTC to fiat at a gain over their basis in that BTC.  Now of course it's different if you are actually mining BTC because all of that would be subject to taxed, but that's gotta be a minor # of people compared to overall users of BTC.

Anyone have further insight on this?  I suppose I could write to CB support for further clarification.

I know a lot of you are going to (or at least experimenting with) the 8-GPU and up Mobos... but for those of you still potentially in the market for a 4-6 GPU rig, NewEgg has probably one of the best Mobos for this back in stock at the moment at only $70.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157724&cm_re=asrock_btc-_-13-157-724-_-Product

I have 2 rigs built on this and they are by far my 2 most stable (vs the other 2 that are on BioStar TB85). I just picked up 2 in case I end up keeping my Vega's & building a GTX rig.

Very cool thanks for the link - I bought a bunch of spare ASUS Primes just in case any of ours failed, but they're still sitting brand new all this time lol.

Sure thing... and I think it was QuintLeo who mentioned the drawback of that Mobo is the now hard to find 1150-based CPUs. Indeed this is true as the G3258's I used in my 4 rigs are pretty much gone. But, I was able to find a very close alternative (G3260) and Jet.com has them in stock for a decent $70-$75. If anyone is still potentially going to build a rig on a 1150 Mobo, might be a good idea to pick a few of these up soon before they are all gone.
159  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: December 02, 2017, 11:12:13 PM
To further expand on the coin price comments by Phil and others... yeah, I thought for sure that when the dip started 3 days ago we were headed for a pretty big correction. Most coins were down 10-15% and that even held into the next day. But then yesterday, essentially overnight for those in the US, almost all of those losses were erased and and now most coins are either back where they were 4 days ago or even higher.  i'm not saying there won't be another correction but the market has shown much more resiliency most of this year, meaning pretty much every dip, even the big ones, were immediately followed by a growth period where BTC and many alts hit all times highs.  but most of those prior dips lasted much longer than this recent one and took much longer to recoup losses than 2 days. To me, this likely means there is more stability in the market now, and I wouldn't be shocked to see many coins gain another 25-40% before another correction hits.

Granted, despite this optimism, I am still looking to liquidate at least a bit of my portfolio in the coming weeks.  To that end, I would like to ask what method most people like to use (aside from the obvious Coinbase) here to convert BTC to fiat (in my case, USD). I took a look at LocalBitcoins.com and there are many buyers there offering at or even above current market prices.  Has anyone used this? Is it legit?  What about the paypal option?  anything to look out for when using that?  Aside from that, any other recommendations would be appreciated.
