1421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Latin terms in Bitcoin on: February 03, 2023, 06:33:30 AM
Latin is not practically used by many countries besides The Vatican City, so how effective would a Latin translation of popular bitcoin lingo be?

e.g. UTXO, wallet, mnemonic seed, transaction, memory pool, inputs, vout, coinbase?
This is the first time I came across the word vout being used in relation to bitcoin. I am a bit confused as I have not seen it associated with any bitcoin wallet I have used, is it peculiar to bitcoin or related to crypto in general or used on some specific platforms?

Also with coinbase you have to specify that you are referring to the rewards and not the exchange.

1422  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the way out when an hardware wallet is compromised? on: February 02, 2023, 08:16:46 PM
-What happens if the hardware wallet is defective or compromised? Is there an alternate route.

- Which other wallet is ideal for storing bitcoin?
- This is likely to happen if you purchased the hardware wallet from an unverified third party selling on an online platform. In this case you could have a wallet which already has the keys generated and is in the possession of someone other than you.
If any device you use for crypto is compromised, discontinue using it asap and move any funds you may have there. Then you can seek a replacement or a refund.

- A reputable, open source, non custodian wallet
Could be a hardware or not and you should be able to verify how the keys are generated.

1423  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if 1 satoshi worth more than 1 dollar? on: February 02, 2023, 06:59:53 PM
To put it in context, 1BTC has to be equal to $100,000,000 (100 million) for the value of 1 sat to be a dollar, that is a crazy increase from the current price and would require a ridiculous influx of money into the bitcoin market, making it a problem that would not arise in the next 100 years.

In the hypothetical situation that this does happen, the solution of changing a bit of the protocol and making it more divisible to allow for smaller units, this would both make smaller transactions possible onchain and also make the asset more available.

1424  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - take profits or continue to DCA? on: February 02, 2023, 06:47:46 PM
I am not sure if I should continue selling my Bitcoin the more we pump or if I should start to DCA again.
It depends on what you expect from the market and what your profit margin is before you take profit.

I want 20x gains and feel this is more realistic in top altcoins that are currently 80-90% down.
You say you want 20× gains from the next bull run which is a 2000% from the current price, and selling now would mean you do not get to that point.
Secondly, altcoins being 80-90% down does not mean there would be a price recovery at any point in time, the coins are more likely to keep losing value and eventually collapse than to gain 2000%.

1425  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to store BTC on: February 01, 2023, 06:16:44 PM
Apart from electrum wallet,

Please provide suggestion as how to store BTC securely for long term.
It is not about the wallet, but how you use it.

One could use electrum on an old desktop which they do not use any longer and do not connect to the internet at all. If they securely generate their keys on it and back up their seedphrase, maybe with an additional passphrase, this would be more secure than just opening electrum on your regular mobile and creating a wallet, and could be as secure (or more) as a hardware wallet.

How you back up your seed, How you access your wallet to transact, how you interact online all contribute to the security of your asset.

1426  Economy / Economics / Re: There is deflation in countries where Russians have been fleeing on: February 01, 2023, 06:09:41 PM
For context, the economy of Georgia and Armenia has been steadily growing for several years now due to several reasons. There is a sharp growth curve now, but that cannot be simply credited to immigration of Russian citizens with the numerous factors such as tourism, agriculture, exports etc.

In-order to draw a pattern here, there would need to be more information about the credentials of the Russian emigrants, parts of those countries they likely move to and compare the stats across the different states. Also, there should be historical data on growth curve over the past decade or two

1427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Invest in Bitcoin now so you don't have to regret it later. on: January 28, 2023, 09:28:17 PM
One of the biggest issues I had that year, and it was the worst year of my life, was that I was very poor, and I didn't have extra money to gamble on something I don't know about. As a result, I concluded that I can't gambling on this.

I'm furious at myself for not purchasing bitcoin sooner. Though I'm a happy man now because I can now smile at my wallet.
You do not need to be furious with yourself about not being able to invest.
You were in an unfavorable financial situation and made a wise decision not to risk scarce resource on a high risk asset. It is not shrewd to invest when you do not ave sufficient amounts to spare at the time.

Invest now, so you will not regret it later.
Invest as much as you can risk at the time.

1428  Other / Meta / Re: New bitcointalk rank? 🔥 on: January 28, 2023, 08:21:49 PM
Mr. A can be in Legendary rank with Mr. B. But Mr. Having upto 5,000 merits while Mr. B has 1023 merits will likely show that Mr A contributes meaningfully than Mr. B. If this continue to work, what then is the need of adding another rank?
With this logic, there might be no need for any ranks at all. A user with 500 merits is assumed to contribute better than one with 10 (not always), one does not have to be a Hero member rank and the other a Member ranked user, assuming they both have the required activities.

The objective of the idea of a new rank from what I understand is to give users who contribute actively something to look forward to. For some there is a thrill when you achieve a new rank and the associated perks, it does not have to stop at legendary, but I think it can.

A new rank would open up discussions for a another one in a couple of years when we have members with 50,000 merits and then another a couple more years down the road. All these are ranks that should be recognized, but maybe with cool nicknames or personal text stickers.

1429  Other / Meta / Re: Appeal apologies for dataispower ban on: January 28, 2023, 08:06:51 PM
now since it's parmanent ban it's a decision for the moderator who banned you to consider lifting it or not and your chances of getting a second chance may be low here
IIRC, it is not limited to the mod that banned you to a lift a ban.

Regular staffs do not have the power to ban or unban, that is restricted to Global mods and the forum admin, which does not have to be the exact one that effected the ban.

1430  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2022/2023 on: January 27, 2023, 07:33:27 PM
Starting 11 for Arsenal and Manchester City are in for the big FA Cup tie;

And both teams have named very strong sides for tonight's match up. It is definitely not as important as an EPL clash between the two teams, but it is still a very important fixture. Hopefully Zinchenko would get some minutes in against his former side and we the fans would get an amazing game of football on our hands,

1431  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If you think 21,000,000 BTC is not enough for everyone then you are wrong! on: January 27, 2023, 07:09:29 PM
True — but despite this, we should still be using a smaller denomination by default (in my opinion) like sats or bits. Buying stuff using 0.000xxx BTC is far less welcoming than using something without decimals.
You are suggesting Bitcoin be represented using a smaller unit by default, so instead of BTC it is promoted as Sats or millibits?
This has the pro of making calculations easier in the long run (but would be confusing in the short term) and could also help those who still think they have to acquire whole bitcoins to fully be holders.
And as you pointed out, there is the con of difficulty reaching consensus on a decision.

As is stands, while there is no change on that, holders can choose to configure what denomination shows up on their wallet. I am aware this is supported by a couple of softwares.

1432  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New and ready to learn on: January 27, 2023, 01:47:02 PM
I suggest visiting udemy and avail online courses about Bitcoin technical development will guide you on basics to advance knowledge so that you can catch up easily on discussion here instead of reading topics here from scratch if you want a quick learning.
I find reading topics here from scratch a faster and more efficient way to learn and understand how bitcoin works than going through several hours of courses on udemy or other platforms. Information gotten from here can also be considered to be more credible if you know how to discern what members to learn from.

Op would be better off learning how to use the search option[1] and find any topic of interest to them.

Supply discussions and talk on scarcity are a couple decades too early. There is currently no shortage of available Bitcoin for purchase and as such no immediate need to implement a new, smaller unit to make it more readily available, and at the time we hit such a bottleneck, there is already a ready solution for it.

After the inception of LN, we can divide that same amount of sathosis by thousand smaller units that can be called microsats.
A 2nd layer is not needed for the implementation of a smaller unit, it can all be done on chain.

1434  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is getting ready for $25K, How? on: January 26, 2023, 09:31:07 PM
...
$25k is not a high bar, but it does not only depend on the availability of buyers. While there would always be buyers, there would also always be panic sellers who would dip the price and cause a price reversal.
If you are not bothered about the short term activity in the market then you can comfortably buy cheap and hodl.

1435  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is getting ready for $25K, How? on: January 26, 2023, 09:11:06 PM
...
Most fear and greed indexes I have stumbled on are suggesting we are still in the neutral zone and traders are undecided about whether we are out of the waters yet or not.

In addition, no matter how low the price drops, there would always be traders who would want to buy at lower levels. I doubt they have any real intentions to buy, but just enjoy seeing the price drop cause they do not hold any.

$25k in the next couple of weeks is a reasonable price range, we just have to see how much growth above that can be sustained.

1436  Other / Meta / Re: This forum has resources to make significant changes on: January 26, 2023, 08:58:49 PM
theymos has toyed with the idea of some sort of Bitcoin related course before, which would tie in with the forum potentially via badges if I remember correctly.
If this could implemented, it would be a great addition to the forum.
Bitcoin knowledge is all over the place, but what I learn from this forum is better content than I find in most online courses and articles and it operates in a decentralized manner where each user has a voice and can use that.

A structured course organized by the forum and maybe run with supporting information from the members here would be a great addition.#

1437  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: is bitcoin a good chance for the future on: January 25, 2023, 01:28:43 PM
I don't know much about bitcoin, and I also want to invest in bitcoin,
You need to know about bitcoin before you can invest in bitcoin.
Listening to what others say about how their investment went could mislead you and give a wrong impression of bitcoin and how it works.

but I want to ask whether bitcoin has good potential for the future?
It is one of the most promising investments and has lot of potential for the future particularly in the financial sector.

and what,, many people who lose investing in bitcoin.? and I want to know why people experience losses investing in bitcoin?
You only lose in bitcoin when you sell and people lose cause they sell too early or panic sell when the price drops.
People can also experience losses from not taking security precautions and do not store on third party wallets.

1438  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How bitcoin supply can be more than 21 million on: January 25, 2023, 12:58:39 PM
my question is, we can trade more than 19miilions coins on exchanges with leverage like: an institution have 500k bitcoins and they are trading on 50x leverage (it's obvious no one will take this much risk just for example and understanding) and more like people or institution like this than we can rich more than 19miillion coins
I do not think it is possible. Leverage trading is not as straightforward as knowing the ratios, there are peculiarities associated with the collateral and the exchange. So a collateral of 500,000BTC would influence the amount of leverage one can take considering the exchange reserve funds.

like this than we can rich more than 19miillion coins
or more than exchange's reserve ,
I am not absolutely certain on the laws, but it could be illegal for an exchange to allow margin trading beyond its reserves.

1439  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I might be wrong about this but I need to know on: January 25, 2023, 12:42:48 PM
Cloud mining for bitcoin today is likely a scam attempt.

With the computing power competition among high-end modern equipment, cloud mining is unprofitable and exposes your device tomlots or risks from malwares and viruses.

1440  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: State of secrets management, recommendations and improvement proposals 2022 on: January 25, 2023, 12:34:41 PM
It's as simple as downloading and verifying the software on your online computer, and then securely transferring it to your airgapped computer.
That makes lot of sense. I was overthinking the situation and considering the risk of some malicious app or file being on my online device, as I use it more often and it is considered less secure than the airgapped one.

Since this does not have to be done often and I still have to maintain some level of security on my online device, there is a reduced risk or a breach.
