I just watched one buyer position until they were able to rake in almost 12 BTC of cat.
Was watching that, too. He threw himself against a 40btc wall, now it is about ~29BTC. Probably not the best move though... His lack of buy support will cause the price to collapse.

I got under that trader while they were fumbling around. At first, I thought their 11 BTC was a fake wall to support a pump, and then I realized what they were doing.

The new DOGE wealthy are throwing money around. I think a lot of eyes are on CAT.

Also, on a related note, is there a symbol for grain (i.e. the grain version of BTC)?

This would work well for tiny icons.

[addendum]

In case there isn't a symbol, below are some candidates. If a vote is in order, then voters may refer to them by the letter underneath. These are Arial font. Note that the difference between a and b is the gap between the top bar and the main curve. I think that g might run the risk of being commonplace.

My personal favorites are a and e. I think e might have promise because the "r" is reminiscent of grain, and altogether hinting to the grain logo.

Suggestions are welcome and I can design around them.

I'm building an OS X native graincoin wallet. Is there a 512 x 512 resolution picture of the graincoin logo (pictured below) available? I need one to make a nice set of icons.

Thanks!

In fact, I came into the channel to continue development work, but you sent a message into the public development channel accusing me of causing discord and confusion among investor types and that in essence I was as ignoramus with no knowledge of economics, etc.

That about sums it up.

Semantics.

It's semantics because it was clear from CONTEXT what the meaning "investor" was.

Yawn. I'm bored of myself for even replying.

[compulsive edit]

Also, the dictionary agrees with my usage:

invest |inˈvest|
verb
1 [ no obj. ] expend money with the expectation of achieving a profit or material result by putting it into financial schemes, shares, or property, or by using it to develop a commercial venture

What does getDifficulty() look like?

This is a fair question. That function is not yet implemented. But does code exist out there to look at the blockchain data to reliably produce what the difficulty was at any given block number? Given how many graphs and blockchain websites are out there that shows exactly this data, the answer has to be yes.

A timestamp and difficulty look to be embedded in the chain for each block. So, if the block explorer can extract this information, then getDifficulty() should be able to as well.

http://catchain.info/block/1908c6546f822d3c743ed38ef8c79fc3d4ee1b21cd5f1f96f5d732c6ee6b0f5f

I only ask about the contents of getDifficulty() to know if it will return sensible values for the full domain of nHeight.

This is an interesting proposal. Once you get getDifficulty() coded, you should run a broad range of nHeights through it and see if the reDiff() gives you what you expect. I sense a hole in this approach, but I can't put my finger on it.

An investor is one who makes a purchase with cash or a loan in order to generate regular income (in other words, cash flow).
A trader buys and sells something.
A speculator trades or 'buys/holds/prays' in hopes of profiting by selling later.

Semantics.
1452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 18, 2014, 12:21:45 AM
Not all of us mine, some of us have to buy. Will cat ever go up, I may  buy some more. Huh

Don't buy any until the devs announce the fix and answer any questions pertaining to it.

Many investors were already burned badly by the last fix that didn't really seem to address the underlying issue with this coin.

How do I find out for a coin what is the

  • the current block number
  • current average block time (or time to find latest block)
  • the current difficulty
  • the re-target block number
  • the re-target difficulty

Any help is greatly appreciated!
1456  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 17, 2014, 07:52:43 PM
Let me make this clear to many of you:  If you are a pump and dump miner you will not be happy with CAT.

I'm just trying to help. I bought thousands of cat when it was worth many times what it is today. I had to sell because the future was entirely unclear after it tanked from the last fork. I'm all out now. I'm looking to get back in because I think it will could be a good coin. My BTC are on the sidelines at this point.

I offer my expertise in simulations, which is extensive, I assure you, and I get either a short answer or a rant. I don't think that bodes well for the future of this coin.
1457  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 17, 2014, 05:46:33 PM
Worldcoin retargets every block. We are doing the same on the next fork.

Will the fork beat the next dump by the coin jumpers?
1458  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 17, 2014, 05:38:34 PM
Always optimize for the long term.

That would be the point of the simulation. You find the most robust parameters for coin generation.

Anyway, I'm not the one proposing to vary the payouts like the devs, which seems drastic. The idea behind a simulator is that you find the most conservative set of coin generation parameters to still maintain robustness of the coin.

You have a bunch of ideas floating around. You could either fork the coin every time an idea fails (which seems to be the current paradigm for catcoin), or make intelligent decisions based on simulations.

I'd explain why simulation is preferable to try-and-fail, but Nate Silver has already beat me to it. Read The Signal and The Noise.
1459  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 17, 2014, 04:43:35 PM
One approach that is being considered is to put a constraint on the number of coins that can be produced per minute (represented by the downward pointing arrows), independent of the "difficulty."

Have you thought about running simulations to see how these ideas work? The technique is to simulate the various mining agents that behave like real-world agents and also simulate the properties of the coin and see how coin production is effected by changes to the coin. If this seems like something that could be helpful as input to the fix, let me know on this thread and I'll jump on the IRC when I have time. I have simulated many systems.
1460  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 17, 2014, 05:22:47 AM
Cat Colin's price dropped a lot today, what's going on??

Do you like that stair-step function?

You have two groups of miners here:

1. In the first group are catcoin faithfuls, who mine the coin through thick and thin, spending most of their time in the thick with high difficulty.
2. In the second group are coin jumpers. These people and pools mine the easiest coin on the block. The coin jumpers mine catcoin after the catcoin faithful have mined all the difficult blocks.

When the coin jumpers finish mining the easy catcoin blocks (before it re-targets to extreme difficulty), they go straight to cryptsy and dump all of their coin, eating every buy order until the coin jumpers have no more coin to sell.

The catcoin faithfuls are rapidly dwindling however because whoever has taken responsibility for developing catcoin refuses to fix the issue.

The only positive aspect of this tragedy is that it provides a grotesque sort of entertainment for the type of people who rubber-neck automobile accidents.

[EDIT]
I wrote the above while the previous post was being written. Hopefully a fix is coming!
