14401  Other / Meta / Re: DefaultTrust changes on: January 09, 2019, 09:51:47 PM
It doesn't matter if you can get an account or two to the list this way. It's only important that you can't get a big enough share.
Ahh yeah, fair point.

I hope some of the newer additions to DT1 take the time to re-visit their trust lists.
Agreed, but to be fair, I think everyone should be taking time to re-visit both their sent feedbacks and their trust lists. There are going to be many new inclusions on DT2 as well over the coming days as things settle down, and I'm sure there will be many more cases like the one you've highlighted popping up.

Perhaps the requirement should be top 200 (LOL) or at least top 50% of merit earners or smth like that.
Hahaha. Perhaps not as strict as top 200, but certainly a requirement higher than 10 is reasonable in my opinion.
14402  Other / Meta / Re: DefaultTrust changes on: January 09, 2019, 09:45:17 PM
There should definitely be an activity requirement in addition to the merit requirement being increased.
That would certainly make it harder, but given the number of ongoing account sales, still not difficult enough (i.e. impossible).

I really think they need to of earn't 250 merit, but thats just my thought on it
Again, that would help for now, but just push the problem further down the line as more and more members (and more and more sold/hacked accounts) will eventually reach that milestone.

I suppose the protective feature here is that theymos said he will be manually rebuilding DT1 every month or so, so it would never actually happen without him realizing it first. That does essentially centralize the DT list to theymos and give him a veto over anyone's inclusion though (but I guess that's always been the case to an extent).
14403  Other / Meta / Re: DefaultTrust changes on: January 09, 2019, 09:23:23 PM
-snip-

Consider my pants fixed.

Yes. There are thousands of users whose custom lists will start to matter a lot.

But probably far less who will actually update their lists. Having said that, 10 people with 10 merits (and 1 with 100) trusting you is not a particularly high bar to be set. I would worry about potential scammers either buying or trading merits their way on to DT.
14404  Other / Meta / Re: DefaultTrust changes on: January 09, 2019, 09:05:31 PM
Just 4 days ago, I was actually surprised how many people had included me:
I'm now including you as well

And I will too. If my understanding is right, although I'm not trusted by anyone, simply by virtue of having earned enough merits, my inclusion will count? I always just used Default Trust because I like to see things the same way the majority of users did, but I'll be playing around with a custom trust list over the next few days.

I've now removed my negative ratings to you.

Thank you for taking the first step here. As I said before, although we obviously disagreed about the conduct of that auction, I don't think it should have permanently marked your account given your otherwise extensive positive trading history. More cooperation and less conflict amongst senior members, who should all be on the same team (protecting the forum from scammers), can only be a good thing.

-snip-

I'm going to have to ask you to stop using that gif because every time I see it makes me feel funny in my pants.
14405  Economy / Reputation / Re: Poll: is it OK to send merits to your own alts? on: January 09, 2019, 08:44:48 PM
And there are so many posts that are so much worth the merit and everyone just avoids them just because they are newbies.

I hear this a lot, and I spend a lot of time looking for good newbie posts to merit, and usually come up empty handed. I must be looking in the wrong places. Please report all these good newbie posts that are worthy of merit to us merit sources so that we can merit them - [self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source.

Also I have seen dark green trusted member getting merit for 2 words posts. Those people should be banned. That's my opinion. I might be wrong Huh

You are wrong. theymos has explicitly said that you are free to merit whoever you want for whatever you want:

Aside from that, if people complain about whether things deserve merit at all, then that's something to perhaps think about, but if you conclude that they're wrong, then that's that. You don't need to stress about it or defend yourself constantly.
14406  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Totally confused but I think it was an attempt to scam me? on: January 09, 2019, 02:29:52 PM
I would have ceased all communication with that guy the very moment he started getting weird.

Absolutely. Why were you even entertaining this nonsense about going helping him to sell his private bitcoins from the darkweb? He even tells you this:

Him: last time we hack 56  btc from coinbase transaction

And yet you continue to try to get him to set up a multisig wallet so you can sell these bitcoins for him.

He was obviously trying to scam you, but if you believed that what he was saying was true, then why were you trying to enter in to a partnership selling stolen bitcoins on behalf of a hacker?
14407  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Allert about Stellar Airdrop on: January 09, 2019, 02:11:04 PM
Freakin scammers LOL. Good luck trying to convince people to click on your link if you can't even spell "crypto" right.

People will though. Lured in by the promise of some free token, even if the token is complete trash, worthless, and might never actually hit an exchange, people will pay no attention to the blatantly obvious warning signs. They will be quite happy to enter their seed on some shady website. They will be quite happy to send all their details, a selfie, and copies of their passport and driver's license to a complete stranger. The reason these scams continue to exists is because people continue to fall for them. Same with scam ICOs. If people actually took 2 minutes to engage their brain and realise they are being conned, these scams would all disappear because they would no longer be profitable for the scammers.

Greed is an ugly emotion.
14408  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X - new mobile focused hardware wallet on: January 09, 2019, 10:43:21 AM
but since it is pretty quick and easy to swap out apps when I need to (without changing keys or loosing any transaction info) it isn't that big of a deal.

Pretty much. You can change apps in about 20 seconds, so even if you are regularly using several different one, a price tag of 120€ hardly seems worth it to save yourself a few seconds.

I'm sure I read somewhere about an update to Ledger Live being in the works, where if you tried to open a coin that wasn't installed, it would automatically uninstall other apps and install the app you need. But for the life of me I can't find anything about that now - maybe I'm making it up. Still, would be a nice feature.
14409  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Proof of Keys Event for a Beginner? on: January 09, 2019, 09:54:05 AM
However this event is about removing your coins from the exchange. Using any kind of wallet is a great step already, even a mobile wallet

Absolutely. Mobile wallets aren't great, but they are still better than an exchange wallet. Just don't transfer to a web wallet - they have all the same problems as exchanges do. Software wallets are ok (mobile or desktop), hardware, airgapped, or paper wallets are better.

Coinomi have also just launched their multicoin desktop wallet, if anyone is thinking of going down that route. It's technically still in beta, but it looks pretty slick from what I've seen of it: https://www.coinomi.com/en/downloads/
14410  Economy / Reputation / Re: Anyone think saulzaents is a bought/hacked account? Looking for sleuths. on: January 09, 2019, 09:50:40 AM
The account has now been banned as of this morning. Good spot TP and good work getting him banned.

I'm somewhat relieved the original user is no longer browsing the forum whilst in the middle of an operation, but no doubt he has found new and interesting ways to neglect his patients.
14411  Other / Meta / Re: Is the Default trust system still working/active? on: January 08, 2019, 08:07:10 PM
Because theymos wants to change the system to improve it for everyone. You want to change the system so you are no longer red-tagged.
14412  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi Desktop on: January 08, 2019, 08:04:44 PM
I've not downloaded it myself, but there's a nice video on YouTube of someone downloading, installing, setting up a new wallet and playing around with it a little - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5VRv-Ke2-c. Unfortunately the video is in Portuguese, but you can at least get a feel for how it looks. Honestly, it looks pretty smooth and slick. I doubt I'll ever use it since I don't have any interest in the majority of alts, and the coins I do hold are almost all stored on hardware wallets, but still, props to them for what looks like a nice desktop wallet.

Edit: HCP beat me to it. Tongue
14413  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MERITS: Will doing this be uncertain, or should I do this? on: January 08, 2019, 07:01:08 PM
That list doesn't say anyting about the posts, a banned user can still have good posts (let's ignore plagiarism for this statement Tongue ).

Oh, for sure. And the actual content of some plagiarized posts can be really rather good. I was just using the list to highlight the fact that many users, including senior users and staff members, send merits to members who are then banned for a variety of reasons, and no one ever tries to seek retribution on the merit-sender.
14414  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MERITS: Will doing this be uncertain, or should I do this? on: January 08, 2019, 04:12:42 PM
I think this other post by theymos answers most of your questions:

If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.

If a DT member tags you for something stupid involving merit (ie. probably anything less than selling merit), then they're not going to be a DT member for much longer.

Aside from that, if people complain about whether things deserve merit at all, then that's something to perhaps think about, but if you conclude that they're wrong, then that's that. You don't need to stress about it or defend yourself constantly. It's conceivable that someday you and I will end up disagreeing too much about this stuff and I'll remove your source status, but it's really not a big deal.

It's fine to merit any post you like, and it's fine to give as many merit as you want to a post (even 50).

I have much different criteria for meriting newbies compared to senior members. Yes, the vast majority of newbies aren't contributing anything particularly new or groundbreaking, but if they are making an effort to contribute something, learn, ask, discuss, etc, and not just spam, then I'll considering throwing a merit their way. But no, most newbies won't rank up because most newbies are only here to try join bounty campaigns.

This plagiarism is one such issue I'm scared of, and if I accidentally (not intentionally) give out merits to such user who copy-pasted content from someone else's, will I also be blameworthy with that user?

No, you will not be held responsible. Probably every merit source has merited users that have since been banned for plagiarism. It happened to me just a few days ago: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5093301.msg49088232#msg49088232. You can also see a list of "Top merit senders to permabanned users" here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsendban. There are some very senior members on that list, including several staff members. They are not held responsible. If users were held responsible, the entire merit system would grind to a halt as everyone would be too scared to merit anything.
14415  Other / Meta / Re: why my account was blocked ? on: January 08, 2019, 03:58:16 PM
Reporting him is more than enough. Necrobumping this thread will not alert the mods any faster (or even at all, if they don't read it) than a report would, and simply contributes to more spam.
14416  Other / Meta / Re: Is the Default trust system still working/active? on: January 08, 2019, 03:49:14 PM
I do think we could use more DT1 and, by extension, DT2 members, but we shouldn't be adding people just because we need more people. We should be adding people who would be an asset to the system, regardless of your feelings about the system in general.

If such a default list structure exists, it should solely be a list of people unlikely to scam others, it should be nothing more, nothing less.

Surely that's what green trust is for? Green trust means you are unlikely to scam others. Being unlikely to scam isn't enough to warrant a place on DT if all your trust ratings are nonsense.

I understand you want DT either diluted, changed or removed, but if you are going to derail every discussion about it back on to your personal beef with Vod, then nothing is going to change.
14417  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Win the new"Ledger nano X" Just RT to join the competition on: January 08, 2019, 01:42:12 PM
To all planning on entering: be careful with hardware wallets from a third party. These have previous been used to scam people. There was case all over reddit about a year ago of a user who bought a device from a third party which had been pre-initialized, and all their coins were stolen: https://www.ledger.fr/2018/01/12/scam-second-hand-ledger-device/

If you do receive a hardware wallet from a third party, there are steps you should take to ensure it is a genuine device and has not been tampered with: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002481534-Check-if-device-is-genuine

Always make sure to update to the latest firmware, initialize the device yourself, and write down your own 24 word seed.
14418  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X - new mobile focused hardware wallet on: January 08, 2019, 01:17:30 PM
It all comes down to shitcoins for sure. People have figured out that downloading random mobile wallet clients isn't the best thing to do with how many fake shitcoin clients there are available. It's easy to go wrong here.

It's where the next wave of buyers for Ledger comes from, I suppose. Most serious bitcoin users already own a hardware wallet or two - sure, some will upgrade to the new model, but many won't. They need to get a new wave of buyers interested, and I guess the best way to do that is to support the 100s of trash coins that are flooding the market. They are paving the way for skyrocketing sales when the next bull run arrives. It is good business sense, but as someone with zero interest in all these trash alts, I can't say I'm not disappointed.
14419  Economy / Reputation / Re: [self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source on: January 08, 2019, 12:42:47 PM
I get an average of 1 smerit from normal user I just feel it isn't fair receiving the same amount from you guys with exception to few.

Not all merit sources are created equal. Some get low double figures of sMerit a month, some get around 1000, and everyone has a variable amount of their own sMerit left as well. The ones who give out several merits per post as standard do that because they can. If I tried to hand out that many, I'd have to merit around 10x less posts than I currently do.

If I run out of sMerits by giving 1 merit to lots of good posts, that's fine, but if I'm down to my last few sMerits, then I'm not going to give them all to one post (unless that post is exceptional), and leave myself unable to merit any other good posts I see until I get refilled.

I think it would be reasonable to have him either sign a message or send an email. If he can, it doesn't clear him by any means, but if he refuses then it's an easy tag.

Having said all that, he has previously been banned for plagiarism: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1879076.0. He should be banned again for ban evasion then, surely?
