1461  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Recommend a non custodial wallet for IOS on: May 29, 2023, 02:53:05 PM
To be honest, I still use this Trustwallet but for a hot wallet.
The thing that I liked most is this wallet compatible with several blockchains that could easily navigate your coins to another exchange.
But of course, if your purpose storing in the long term, I'll not recommend this wallet either.  Disregard the security while it is easy to use in a convenient way as a hot wallet, not your cold wallet.  It's better than using a web wallet like MyEtherWallet.

Exodus wallet would be preferable for me in IOS phones.
Hot wallet means that you use it repeatedly, and this wallet is bad as a hot wallet because you cant control TX fees and there is no RBF flag.
A few weeks ago trust wallet was found to contain a critical vulnerability related to generating private keys read it from

https://twitter.com/TrustWallet/status/1649699428733947906?cxt=HHwWhMDQvfq49OQtAAAA
https://community.trustwallet.com/t/wasm-vulnerability-incident-update-and-recommended-actions/750786

Quote
“To be free from the vulnerability, users must migrate their assets from the affected wallet addresses to new, non-affected wallet addresses,”

In short they say, Old accounts are still vulnerable to this hack.

You have a lot of good, open source options for both Bitcoin and Ethereum like bluewallet and NEW wallet then use trust wallet as a hot wallet for some shitcoins.
1462  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Verifiable builds need attention. Only 3 of 68 Android wallets are verifiable on: May 29, 2023, 02:36:26 PM
WalletScrutiny website was recently shut down due to a DMCA takedown notice, and we it was unavailable for few days but now it's working again.
I don't know why anyone would have a problem with website like this, but maybe some closed source wallets and centralized exchanges are involved with this.
If you want to follow what happened follow their twitter account @WalletScrutiny.
The power of these "custodial exchanges" and the time that a lawyer took to litigation and all this for open source code?
I will download the website files, run it offline, and will everywhere give Foxbit (which was the reason for DCMA) a negative rating. Cool

187 wallet with No Source! and 591 Custodial! All this in a decentralized industry.
1463  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Am I right about this or not on: May 29, 2023, 05:24:35 AM

The reward to fee ratio has changed bigly.

50 reward .02 fees
25 reward .04 fees
12.5 reward .08 fees
6.25 reward .15 fees
I used to think the opposite, which is that bitcoin transaction fee per byte in the early days are expernsive because everyone was not know how bitcoin works, low currency value, bad software, which sometimes causes someone to send 50 bitcoins as fees.

today, they have become more aware of the value of bitcoin, and we do not pay a lot of fee per byte, or to be precise, fee per vbyte, but on the other hand, the number of transactions in each block has increased, and it has become rare to mine several empty blocks.

After the last Satoshi is mined, the blocks will inevitably be very full, and the average in dollars may be the same as the current average in currencies, because according to historical data, it is not affected by the price.

1464  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why MIT license for Bitcoin Core Over other Permissive License Alternatives on: May 29, 2023, 04:57:36 AM
If you have an open source project and intend to attract more people to work with you and contribute to its development.

MIT license is the best choice because it:
  • Less restrictive for copyleft
  • It allows companies that build on top of your project to choose whether or not to continue with the project being open source.
  • New developers can add more to the project without the need to take permission from the first developer.
  • It protects against problems if you find a bug because new projects are not restricted to following specific libraries or specific parts of the program without changing them.

It is suitable for projects in which the community wants to develop more than the desire of the first developer/s.

1467  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What is difference between sats/byte and sats/vbyte and weight. on: May 27, 2023, 01:08:32 PM
Imagine that you have a block space of 1MB, and you are asked to fill it, any transaction you add takes space in that block, but you are lazy and with a few transactions you find that block is full.

Now someone arranged and said I will reorganize the data inside the block so that the same block holds more data, what the person did is segregrate the witness data to a different partition so that it still maintains the same size of 1MB but the non-witness data consumes 4 weight units per Byte .

So every new block contains a (lazy) legacy transaction with Byte = vByte and a (new) with Segwit transactions containing 4 vByte.

The final result is that we have a block of 1MB, but the data inside it is more than it.
Transaction example:  Block 787719 size is 2123.675 KB

In short, avoid using legacy address and calculate fees using sats/vByte because if you are a miner, you will try to fill your block with more data, so you will prefer Segwit transactions.
1468  Other / Beginners & Help / Do not rely on articles as resources to learn Bitcoin on: May 27, 2023, 05:56:20 AM
I see many friends and even some accounts here that rely on some paid (click me) articles as sources to learn technical about Bitcoin.

Almost all platforms and news sites have devoted articles to learning or what is known as academy, and many of the technical articles on those sites contain misleading or biased information, such as some bitcoin.com articles.

Binance Academy, cointelegraph, crypto.com, Bybit Learn,....

Misleading article example https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-advocate-cracks-known-12-word-seed-phrase-in-minutes
Biased essay example https://www.bitcoin.com/full-nodes/

If you want to learn accurate information, it is better to read from

books
GitHub
bitcointalk Technical Discussion boards
bitcoin.stackexchange.com
bitcointechtalk.com

always ask, if you are not convinced of any information.

andreas antonopoulos has good content and answers most of the questions that may arise in your mind, and I also hope that the members will attach more good resources.

1469  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: How do I recover password? on: May 27, 2023, 05:38:08 AM

You can read this topic to understand the difference between the two types with a full comparison of the advantages and disadvantages:
https://crypto.com/university/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets

First, it is better to stay away from these articles as sources of learning, most of which are full of misleading information that has become circulated as facts.
I mean Cointelegraph, binance academy, crypto.com
And let's not forget that some of these articles are biased, as were some articles on Bitcoin.com

a wallet is that software that manages your private keys, if you do not have access to the private key, then you are not using a wallet.

Therefore, the word custodial wallets and non-custodial wallets has no meaning, because if you do not have the private key, then they are not not using a wallet. I can understand it in the formulation of whether you are the only one who can access that private key, or is a third party able to access it.

To make it simple:
If you do not have a private key, this service is not a wallet.
You can manage the wallet from a browser. It is a web wallet.
Otherwise, the divisions are not technical, but rather come from these poorly worded articles.

1470  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: EttaWallet: new Lightning Wallet for iOS & Android📱 on: May 26, 2023, 11:56:52 AM
The design is inspired by this[1], so I guess the developer simply agrees with the explanation that providing a cloud option is useful for its users as long as they don't use it for high-value amounts. It is a wallet data/file upload if I understand it correctly, not a seed backup. I believe the risk is still the same regardless, especially because the added pin protection is limited to 4 digits only. CMIIW.

[1] https://bitcoin.design/guide/daily-spending-wallet/backup-and-recovery/cloud-backup/

The increase of such services to the point of making them normal is disgusting, being your bank means that no third party can access your currencies, their argument that the automatic cloud reduces pressure and responsibility on the user is a weak argument, whoever cannot believe 12 words or was lazy let him use HIS BANK account, not a bitcoin wallet.

This point stopped me because it indicates indirectly that the wallet recovery data before it is sent to the cloud provider may not be encrypted and therefore it is an additional risk or greater trust in the cloud service provider.

Quote
While this is an easier way for users to set up a wallet, it brings in the potential threat of malicious third-party access. If a user’s cloud account is hacked, their funds could be compromised. This can be mitigated by encrypting the wallet recovery data before sending it to the cloud provider.

1471  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: How do I recover password? on: May 26, 2023, 11:24:23 AM
I don't know anything about this wallet, but we can't call it fraud, there are many popular platforms that take a tax if your account is inactive for a period of time, they open the service mainly to earn money and if the account is inactive they can't earn anything.
The description of a wallet is usually called that software that gives you access to your private key, if there is another party that manages that private key so that you cannot access it, then it is not a wallet.

Any service that offers such fees is scam because in the end all the costs are in how to manage the trading lists, and therefore the fact that the account is inactive does not cost them any additional fees, so all the fees are in the trading and withdrawal.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Wallet
Quote
A Bitcoin wallet is a collection of private keys but may also refer to client software used to manage those keys and to make transactions on the Bitcoin network.

This page covers various wallet formats in use.

As for this wallet, it is a web wallet and not a noncustodial wallet, which means that they actually own the private key of the wallet, and the user does not have his private key at all, so he can deduct a commission from the user’s account. For all these reasons, it is better not to use a web wallet.
The web wallet is a wallet, but it is managed online and does not need to be downloaded on any OS.
If another party knows the private key, it is a custodial wallet, and if you does not know the private key, it is not a wallet.
1472  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BitCool BC-888 Dielectric Coolant - Based on SLIC Mechanism - Profitable? on: May 25, 2023, 02:28:25 PM
Do you have cost details? The part that I liked is that it has almost no moving parts but I am still not convinced that the cost of the whole system is much less than the cost of air cooling.

Personally, I think that making profits here is based on calculating space versus efficiency, meaning that you have a small space, cheap electricity, and noise is an influential factor, such as an industrial city or a closed area, but if space and noise are not a big problem for you, the initial costs (CAPEX) are sufficient to purchase several mining devices.
1473  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Marathon CEO Responds to Why the Miner Tax Plan Won’t Work on: May 25, 2023, 01:47:13 PM
All related news, in my opinion, is an attempt by legislators to obtain some subsidies from company owners to help in the electoral process, reducing fees or even imposing zero fees is not the only incentive in this industry, but the prices of electricity, cooling, space rent and surrounding conditions, with obtaining low loans Cost and long repayment terms.

A company will not risk taking a loan with high interest in order to establish a mining farm because taxes are low or it will have low electricity. The industry is based on short and medium-term profit. Whenever possible, miners will move mining tools to that area.

Green electricity is a media lobby, no one will talk about Big Oil and how they affect the environment because they fund these companies.

There have been a few posts about Mississippi & Missouri passing bills to help protect miners. But, we are not hearing about miners moving to those locations since the cost of power is only OK at best.

1474  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: 12 word vs 24 word seed on: May 24, 2023, 02:33:25 PM
Stop taking your information from sources that do not verify the accuracy of the data contained in them, Cointelegraph articles are not for educational purposes and most of them are for paid advertising.

12 word provides 128 bits of entropy which is 2^128 = 3.4028237e+38
24 word provides 256 bits of entropy which is 2^256 = 1.1579209e+77

But according to current data, even the most powerful devices need hundreds of years to guess these words, not to mention all the resources needed to achieve this. All you can do is transfer your transactions every year and you will be safe.

Notice that even if someone knows the 12 words but doesn't know the order, they still need 12! possible combinations (12! = 479.001.600) this is for non repeated words.

Unfortunately, the same article has been discussed several times here, which indicates the importance of knowing where we learn from and not believing any information without verifying its sources.
1475  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Today is Bitcoin Pizza Day. on: May 24, 2023, 02:17:56 PM
Everyone talks about the person who sold that pizza, but no one knows who bought it.
His name is Jeremy Sturdivant and he noticed when he was 19 years old a strange request on this forum. Sturdivant filled the request, and sent him two large pizzas (cheese and "superior") from Papa John's but unfortunately he didn't keep them and used them to travel after a while.

You can read the details of the story and the sources here: https://nypost.com/2021/05/24/bitcoin-pizza-guy-who-squandered-365m-has-no-regrets/

Quote
“I had no idea how huge it would become,” Sturdivant said. But despite losing out on boundless riches, the now-30-year-old said he is “proud to have played a part” in the “global phenomenon.”

It is the first recorded case, but this does not preclude that someone had carried out similar deals.

1476  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: How do I recover password? on: May 24, 2023, 09:39:47 AM
This wallet is a scam and they do some contradictory things for example from /faq page I quote:
Quote
how does bitcoinwallet.com store funds?short term funds required to satisfy customer payments are stored in a hot wallet that is accessible by the system.
But when the question came to how to recover the wallet when you lose the email.

Quote
I lost my email account and cannot receive emails anymore.
you need to know the email address associated with your account and you need to be able to read emails sent to the email address. if you cannot log in because you aren''''''''t able to receive emails, we cannot help.

They also have a new scam, which is that if you do not use your wallet within a certain time (inactive account,) a certain amount will be deducted every month as a tax for your use of the wallet, which means that they can access your private key.

The same applies to the possibility of sending transactions between accounts within the wallet, which are free and instant.

Is this some sort of advertising?
It's just a troll, I searched for the name of the wallet in the forum and there is no other account that promoted it.
1477  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: EttaWallet: new Lightning Wallet for iOS & Android📱 on: May 24, 2023, 09:13:13 AM
So I think this wallet was developed only for people who living on east africa.
It seems that the project is part of an initiative in Africa, but according to their plan, wallet supports multiple languages and locales, and therefore I expect that more languages and currencies will be added, although their main focus is on the local market, and even about Lightning Service Provider, I liken it to some services that spread in Africa, where you can SMS payment.

The project is developing with individual effort and it seems that their goal is mostly local, so the project is not for beginners or as an IOS LN wallet, as I do not expect it to get many reviews.
1478  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor Suite Lite for mobile on: May 24, 2023, 08:52:23 AM
Does it allow you to import externally generated address? For example, the address which is generated from https://kimbatt.github.io/btc-address-generator/?page=paper-wallet, would it allow me to add that as well.

The main goal of hardware wallets is to generate your private key in an environment that is not and will not be connected to the internet, so if there is any hardware wallet application that allows you to import private keys, it is best to stop using it and (destroy that wallet) Joking Tongue.

As you mentioned it's watch only wallet, so is it like just to check the balance? I mean I can do that using block explorer in blink of an eye, not sure what's so special about it or what is the thought behind it.  Cheesy

For privacy only reason, the ability to connect to Tor is supposed to be integrated, but according to the above, there is no option for that, so you can trust that Trezor Suite nodes will not send your IP addresses to a third party.

there are a very few block explorers that allow you to import the master public key.

I am using Mycelium wallet, which does not seem to be properly build for the iOS, its simple yet complicated type of wallet for me. Sometime I am feeling to only use newly generated bitcoin and keep the private keys stores and never import them until I see a proper wallet to do so.

You can choose bluewallet wallet as a bitcoin wallet for iPhone devices, after downloading the wallet, choose “Import wallet” then post your private key or WIF.
1479  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Help! Electrum - Linux can't install (eng, esp, ita, pycc) on: May 24, 2023, 08:31:23 AM
Thank you alls for the suggestions. I've got! the problem was that also Ledger Live was going in that moment, what is not permited to execute correctly. But it surged another question: why the account which is on 25-th word doesn't visualize the balance?
you mean hidden wallet? Go to File > New/Restore, choose a wallet name (any name) and connect using your HW device, enter PIN and correct PIN and correct passphrase + right derivation path

You can find out right derivation path by the type of address you used in the past. Did it started with 1, 3, or bc1? According to this order, you choose one, two, or three option.

Try this and you will succeed. As long as the balance is zero, I think your problem is in the last right derivation step. Otherwise, your problem is in one of the first steps.

To access your standard wallet (first wallet or not hidden one), Go to File > New/Restore, choose a wallet name (any name) and connect using your HW device, enter PIN and correct PIN and make passphrase blank.

you you will need new wallet file per account/derivation
1480  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: To run a full bitcoin node? on: May 23, 2023, 06:58:15 AM
Here, you can find my topic mostly covering a cheap hardware setup for a full node. [Guide] How to run a Bitcoin Core full node for under 50 bucks!

Here, you have a full and up-to-date guide to set up the operating system and software components. It includes optional Electrum and Lightning software, as well. [Guide] FULL NODE OpenSUSE 15.3: bitcoind + electrs + c-lightning + RTL

I do not know, but computers are not designed to work 24 hours and fully synchronize with a full node, and the electricity costs within one year may equal more than $50, assuming that the cost of electricity is 20c/kWh and that the computer will not work 24/7.
Some cheap solutions that consume less electricity and fun to build can be at https://raspibolt.org they have a community that will answer your questions here https://www.reddit.com/r/raspibolt/ and electricity consumption is about $21 a year with the same costs which It will be around $60.

So instead of using your old computer or buying a new one, this solution is a bit cost-effective.
