1501  Economy / Auctions / 24 hour auction ***rose quartz bufftop cabochon*** one to relish on: January 15, 2012, 09:52:58 AM
This is a gemstone that you will hold in your hand and relish!  Put your thumb over the smooth dome on top and rub in a circular motion to enjoy a very unusual, very wonderful cut.  A bufftop has a traditional faceted pavilion but the top is cut like a cabochon- smooth and convex.  This is a lovely pink gemstone to enjoy by touching!

This stone hails from Brazil and weighs 9.27 carats.  It is guaranteed to be totally untreated.

The sensuous baby pink color is sure to excite.

Only 24 hours long and the starting bid is 4BTC.  The increment is 1BTC.  Good luck!

1503  Economy / Auctions / 24 hour auction ***1.03 cts Ethiopian Welo opal*** superb quality on: January 15, 2012, 09:34:18 AM
This is an outstanding trillian shaped Ehtiopian Welo opal.  This is an untreated stone- no smoke, no sugar, no treatment of any type including no fissure filling and no dye or diffusion.  This stone was mined in Ethiopia and cut and polished- that's all!

This stone weighs 1.03 cts and the dimensions are 9.10 x 9.23 x 3.99mm deep.  Opal is not very dense so even though this stone is just over a carat, it is quite large as you can see by the dimensions!

My wife Melanie and I give you a 31-day inspection period and the option to return any gemstone that does not thrill you for a full refund.  Why do we do this?  It's very simple.  If you look at the prices of stones that we have sold on this forum you can see very plainly that one stone will not be a good living for us.  We do, however, make a good living in this business!  How?  By keeping the same clients coming back over and over and over again because of great value and consistently high quality.

If you have not yet visited our blog, please do so.  There is a link at the bottom of my post (in the signature space) that will take you to our gallery.  You will see a couple of flip books there- the one on top is mostly stones and jewelry and wax models, while the one on the bottom is pictures in Thailand.  We are in Thailand most of the time these days but also spend time in Ohio visiting family when we have the chance.

One reason I am so excited to offer high quality Welo opal is because I believe it is a great value in today's market.  It rivals the best Australian opal for a fraction of the price.  I believe in time the value of Ethiopian and Australian opals will grow much closer, but for now there is a wonderful opportunity to own some really fine quality for modest prices.

This opal is just so alive with play-of-color, and the hues are so vivid that it would be hard not to love it.  The neon greens are simply other-worldly and the reds and very intense.  The waves of green and yellow and orange that flutter as you tilt the stone back and forth will thrill you.

Lets start this 24-hour auction at 15BTC with an increment of 1BTC.

1504  Economy / Auctions / ***6.27 cts prasiolite*** square shape step-cut on: January 15, 2012, 08:36:28 AM
This auction does not have a time limit.  I will take bids until I tire of it.

This is NOT green amethyst!  There is NO such thing as green amethyst!  Amethyst is a variety of quartz that is purple in color.  If a stone is not purple, it can not be amethyst.  I repeat- there is no such thing as green amethyst.

When quartz is green, it is called prasiolite.  This is a wonderful example of the stone with a lively mint green color and very good brilliance.  It is also quite clean with a VS clarity grade.  The stone weighs 6.27 carats and the dimensions are 10.68 x 10.21 x 7.55mm deep.

As you can see by the pictures it is a very attractive stone that is square shaped with a step cut.  This makes for a sophisticated look that is ideal either for the gemstone collector or for jewelry.  Because prasiolite is a "7" on the Mohs hardness scale, it is suitable for any type of jewelry.

This stone was mined in Brazil.  This stone has been treated with heat and radiation.

If you have any questions about this or any other stone listed here just send me a note at dave@tiptopgem.com.  As a professional gemologist, I probably have an answer or can find one for you.  And if I don't have an answer to your question I will admit that I have no idea!  Gemology is full of riddles and nobody has all the answers.

1BTC to start, 1BTC increments.  No time limit.
1505  Economy / Auctions / ***1.47 ct oval Ethiopian Welo opal*** beautiful play-of-color on: January 15, 2012, 08:03:00 AM
This auction does not have a time limit- I will take bids until I am bored with it.  Starting bid is 1BTC.  Bid increment is 1BTC.  This gemstone weighs 1.47 carats and is oval shaped with dimensions as follows:

10.04 x 8.02 x 5.41mm deep

This stone is loaded with colors like a pack of starburst fruit chews or a bag of skittles!!!  Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, and purple all show in this sparkling gemstone.

This gemstone has NO treatment.  It was mined from the earth and cut and polished- nothing else.  No dye, no smoke treatment, no sugar, no heat, no fissure fillings, no chemical diffusion.  Untreated gemstones are far more rare and valuable than treated stones.

As with almost all of our auctions here on the forum, shipping is included in the price.

Do I hear one BTC?

Many of these have been through a round or two of auctions and are at rock-bottom prices.  If I can't sell them for bitcoins I will have to put them on eBay and endure the steep listing and PayPal fees.  Angry
