What about new posts though? Maybe there should be an option in the upper corner that lets you sort the threads according to different ways: by merit, new, hot topic and so on. This way, members can only see threads of high quality whenever they want, right?

I frequently sort boards by new. You can do this by adding ";sort=first_post;desc" on to the end of the URL, so for example the URL to sort Bitcoin Discussion by new threads is: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0;sort=first_post;desc.

This has a number of advantages. It effectively filters out all spam mega-threads. You generally end up reading threads with <10 replies, and so there are very few spammy comments and usually some genuine discussion (provided the topic is interesting and not some nonsense like "Bitcoin Forever!"). Any new threads that look interesting I add to my watchlist (or comment in), and then I can easily keep a track of them after they are drowned in amongst all the spam threads.

Regardless, it was a very silly penalty to give away as he was going nowhere and unlikely to get one on target from that angle. Should have just ran the ball out or blocked the shot if he even managed to get one away which I doubt.

Absolutely, and not the kind of mistake you would expect from VVD, who otherwise had a fantastic game.

I saw a very good point made elsewhere that Jesus practices penalties against Alisson for Brazil, so maybe Pep had already put Mahrez on penalties before the match.

-snip-

The darker "L" shaped region in the bottom left has an obvious cut off at 12, and also between 28-31, representing a significant portion of people use either DD/MM or MM/DD as a pin. I would wager the majority of these are probably their own date of birth.

Lots of number patterns are very obvious too - 2468, 2345, 5678, 9876, 2580/0852 (straight down/up the middle of the keypad).

In short - people are bad at security.
15044  Other / Meta / Re: Is it possible to reach a high rank nowadays? on: October 08, 2018, 09:47:57 AM
Luckily i do not need a high rank for what i chose to use Bitcointalk for so it would mean nothing other than being a status symbol.

Correct. You do not need a high rank to read, post, discuss, converse or otherwise get involved in the forum. The only thing you need a high rank for is displaying a signature, and so the only reason to get annoyed about this is if your raison d'être for being here is bounty spamming.

I think Bitcointalk has a responsibility as the largest forum of it's kind to the crypto-users of the world to provide a fair, open, informative and balanced platform for everyone.

And it does just that. Anyone can come to this open forum, gather information, learn, and present their views for discussion. Rank and merit does not change that in the slightest. Again, the only thing a higher rank provides is a signature.

This is all secondary to what has been pointed out multiple times already in this thread - ranking up is not difficult provided you aren't a shitposter.
15045  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: October 07, 2018, 05:27:32 PM
He pushed Jesus out the way to take the penalty. He has a 33% conversion rate on penalties. Their most important penalty to date. Strange behaviour all round.

I wonder if Pep will punish him for that. It's not like City don't have plenty of midfield options.
15046  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS on Ledger Nano S on: October 07, 2018, 04:41:22 PM
Wow, that's actually sad to hear. So are you saying that those who uses EOS is a scam ICO?

Not necessarily. But most ICOs are scams, regardless of the platform they use, and EOS is designed solely to make profit for the 21 Block Producers who commit fraud and vote manipulation to cement their profit making status at the expense of all EOS holders.
15047  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Collection of 18.509 found and used Brainwallets on: October 07, 2018, 04:37:14 PM
Oh for sure, but as I've mentioned before, the human brain is completely fragile. With no way to back up or recover data, and all it takes is a minor blow to make you forget you even have passphrase, let alone what it is.

Even if your brain wallet is more secure than a simple song lyric or something equally stupid, it's still a bad choice for storing your coins.
15048  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: October 07, 2018, 11:38:44 AM
I don't see why we are relying on the tiny number of global mods to do so much work here - patrollers should be able to ban all newbies regardless of activity, and all the major boards (BD, AD, Meta, etc) should have a dedicated mod or two. Would go a long way to reclaiming the spammier boards and making them usable again.
15049  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Collection of 18.509 found and used Brainwallets on: October 07, 2018, 11:20:55 AM
I'd say most of the people still using a brain wallet are simply not tech savvy, and see it as a low friction solution for storing their funds. No software is necessary, nor do you need to write down or print out any weird codes.

Hell, even people who supposedly are "tech savvy" are using brain wallets. You see them advocated for all the time on these forums. McAfee's latest hardware wallet scam turned out to be a glorified brain wallet. It's no excuse though really - if you can figure out how to buy and transfer bitcoin, you know how to install an app on your phone and use a mobile wallet as a bare minimum. Sure it's not the best, but it's 1000x better than a brain wallet.

Brain wallets are for the brainless.

Alternate block explorer showing double spend attempts within the same couple of seconds:

https://bitaps.com/15jG7moSaWgQADbG45cbvc79sHjKBBnxBk

Nearly 1 BTC is not a small amount. Back then it was worth around $15k USD

Password is "letthegoodtimesroll"

This is crazy. Within 2 seconds of the Bitcoin being deposited to that address, 3 different people/bots tried to steal it, and 1 was successful. 1 of the failed attempts was to send it to this address:

https://bitaps.com/1GGctqw9UeUd2vUFRdz5fUvHQnmxAEiTAK

Every single one of the 104 transactions to this address is trying to empty another address within a second or two of a deposit being made. A lot of them are unsuccessful due to the funds being cleared by someone else first, but this address has still managed to steal 0.166 BTC. What's worse is you can look at pretty much any of those transactions and see two or three more addresses trying the exact same thing, all with their own extensive histories of clearing out other addresses within seconds a transaction being made.

If ever there was an argument against using a brain wallet, this is it. Your BTC will be stolen before you've even refreshed your browser and seen that your transaction has been confirmed.

If it was voting that counted - the account farms would win with their thousands of alts.

Precisely. Plus you would then create a market for buying upvotes and downvotes, which since they presumably have no limit like merit, can be sold freely by any moron that can make hundreds of alt accounts.

The better solution to the problem of spam mega-threads is two fold. Firstly, remove signatures from Junior Members, therefore requiring 10 merit until you can display a signature. Increasing the limit to 10 stops the begging/buying/trading of 1 merit which is far too easy for spammers to achieve. This knocks out the vast majority of low-level spammers, who eventually give up upon realizing they will never be able to enroll in another bounty campaign. Secondly, appoint board dedicated mods to keep new threads on topic and spam-free, and frequently lock threads before they develop in to 50+ pages of spam. We know the global moderators just don't have time to monitor every board without its own mod, and we know that board specific mods work as can be seen by the spam-free Mining board.
15052  Economy / Goods / Re: VITAMIN B COMPLEX & B12 ALONG WITH VITAMIN C AMPOULES FOR SALE on: October 07, 2018, 09:22:35 AM
There are very few indications for intravenous vitamin B complexes or vitamin C. They are pretty much exclusively used in severe malnourishment and alcoholism. All vitamins Bs and C are well absorbed orally, and there is nothing this product provides that can't be achieved with an over-the-counter multivitamin for a fraction of the price from your local pharmacy, unless you are suffering from life-threatening malnourishment. That is not even mentioning the poor pharmaceutical regulations in Thailand means you have no guarantee of the product you are receiving, or why an unknown would be selling injectable products privately which is very sketchy in and of itself.

I would stay well away from this.
15053  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UFC 229: Khabib vs McGregor Prediction and Info Thread on: October 07, 2018, 07:26:59 AM
McGregor was playing dirty all match, but Khabib is an idiot.

That post fight tantrum was just plain stupid. He's looking at fines, suspensions, and potentially being stripped of his title. The members of his team that jumped the cage and started punching McGregor as he's receiving treatment have been arrested. Pretty ridiculous for the guy who won the fight.

15055  Other / Meta / Re: Levels on education on this forum? on: October 06, 2018, 10:49:15 PM
Well, I can state that I hold a professional degree, as well as a number of further qualifications stemming from that, but they are completely irrelevant to this forum. None of my qualifications are in anything remotely to do with IT, computer science, economics, etc. There are undoubtedly teenagers out there with far less formal education than me but with a far better understanding of blockchain technology than me.
15056  Other / Meta / Re: Report to Moderator - Database error on: October 06, 2018, 10:22:05 PM
I had the same issue last week. At the time I didn't have the time to make a new thread, so I just ignored it and left to do real life stuff. By the time I came back a few hours later, it had resolved itself and hasn't happened again since.
15057  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: October 06, 2018, 04:47:48 PM
Newcastle 2-0 up after 10 minutes. 19th place, winless, 2 points Newcastle 2-0 up after 10 minutes.

On one hand, this is amazing. On the other hand, Mou has to go.
15058  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: October 06, 2018, 10:29:51 AM
Then you still don't grasp what merit is all about, nor does the referenced post author understand how to use the search function.

The referenced post author is himself. He is begging for merit. I just can't decide if he has delusions of grandeur and genuinely believes that post is the "best post ever made on the forum", or if he is so used to only being in threads with bounty reports and one line shitposts that a post with 4 whole lines to it is genuinely outstanding to him.
15059  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: New coins supported on Ledger Nano S! on: October 06, 2018, 10:25:08 AM
First of all company which produce Nano S it's called Ledger, and they do not focus more on some shit coins then other hardware wallets like Trezor which is support maybe even more completely irrelevant coins - Trezor-Supported coins & tokens (689)

Yeah, it's a complete pissing match to see who can "support the most coins and tokens". Obviously they need to list every trash token individually rather than just saying "all ERC20 tokens", because then they can bump their numbers up in to the hundreds as they have done.

Seriously though, looking through some of the coins on that list makes you half want to laugh and half want to cry. Such tokens as "DeezNuts (DEEZ)", "Finally Usable Crypto Karma (FUCK)", "Sexy Token (SEXY)", and "SHIT (SHIT)". I'm sure they are all "nice projects" with "great teams".
15060  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Research by BitMEX Shows That 75 Percent of Ether Raised By ICOs Has Been So on: October 06, 2018, 10:06:17 AM
That's because most ICOs are scams, who just want to dump their ETH for profit as soon as possible.

Worth noting that >70% of this has been due to a single ICO, EOS. EOS is arguably the biggest scam of them all - centralized, vote collusion, inflationary, the majority of the dev team taking their profits and quitting, all masterminded by Dan Larimer, this being his third ICO after he took profits and abandoned his last two.

This will be a recurring theme until idiots learn to stop throwing their money away at trash projects.
