15161  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano Lost Seed Words on: May 10, 2018, 02:38:51 AM
Like the technological idiot I apparently am,
no you are not a "technological idiot", you are just lazy to learn how to use bitcoin and the wallet you bought first before you use them.

Quote
Is there any way to hack into the unit to either retrieve what was eliminated or figure out the seed words?
if that was possible then Ledger Nano would have been an unsafe choice and nobody should even use it. the whole purpose of it is that nobody can "hack into it".
15162  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: TUTORIAL: How to use Electrum (for beginners) on: May 09, 2018, 03:50:06 AM
just a couple of points that weren't in OP.

Electrum is newbie friendly but at the same time it is flexible to be used in a more advanced way. for example there are a lot of additional tabs, some of which are best be enabled. for example in this part:
Quote
To see your Bitcoin address, select "Receive" tab. If someone wants to send you some bitcoin then the only thing you have to do is to copy "Receiving address". It might change after someone sends money to that address but don't worry. You can reuse your previous addresses.
if you enable the Address tab it is better in my opinion. you can see all your addresses in one place and even add a label for each of them.
also in the Receive tab the "Payment Request" option is always confusing for newbies so enabling Address tab and using that may be a better option in my opinion.

Quote
Sending Bitcoin is fairly easy. Paste the address to which you would like to send BTC in "Pay to" field and enter the amount below. "Description" isn't broadcasted anywhere, you can use it to label transactions. The slider at the bottom indicates the fee for sending a transaction. Electrum automatically selects a proper fee to get your transaction confirmed in the next few blocks.
i find it best to enable "Edit fees manually" from preference so that i can see how much i am paying and type in the fee amount, specially in new version there is a satoshi/byte option which i can fill instead of a fixed total fee.
additionally the "replace by fee" option is best to be enabled although i believe it is enabled by default in the new version. this will help you to easily bump the fee if it was needed.
and finally the "Preview" button is what i always use. i have never actually clicked Send right away! i always preview my transaction, double check everything and then sign and broadcast.
15163  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum BUG - all Bitcoins stolen on: May 09, 2018, 03:17:01 AM
Why is it that people come here, saying "Electrum is scam, bitcoins stolen" and yet they never give the full story.

It would really help if they posted where they downloaded it, the hash of the executable file, if they kept it on an online PC or offline.

We would investigate and help them out. But they usually never come back to comment.

those who don't come back usually have made a silly mistake. for example many don't let their wallet sync so they don't see their funds, then they think they have been robbed. when it is fixed they forget about everything and go away.
but it is also possible that they got if fixed elsewhere. there are other forums like reddit[1], there is Github[2], there is also an IRC channel[3] for Electrum. and when you fix it somewhere else you don't just go back to a random forum you visited once (bitcointalk) and update a topic you made with a throwaway account!
of course there is always an occasional troll too!

15164  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 'we now have proof Electrum Pro is malware' on: May 09, 2018, 03:09:37 AM
... or better yet you have to compile Electrum from its source code.
Last time I tried that... the Windows version just wouldn't run. No errors or anything, the .exe just failed to launch. Undecided

Is compiling the Windows version any easier now with V3+ or is it still relatively complicated requiring you to use Linux and Wine to compile?

it is not easy at all specially when you are not familiar with the code and the tools used (python in this case, which i am not), i have encounters the same issues too and finally gave up!
haven't tried with V3+ though. maybe i give it a go this week if i had time.

In this day and age I'd be buying up every major domain imaginable before launching my project but that's often horribly expensive.

that still wouldn't solve any problems. in this day and age people have to educate themselves if they want to not-lose money. even when you download Electrum from Electrum.org you have to verify the signature of the file with the right public key. or better yet you have to compile Electrum from its source code.
15167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why people want ETH to over come BTC on: May 09, 2018, 02:27:34 AM
because nobody wants that apart from newbie accounts like you who are bag holding it. Wink
in fact everyone knows that Ethereum is the most useless token that was ever created! people only use it to either make profit when it pumps or create ICOs and scam others.

etherum had for quite a while a much lower transaction costs than bitcoin, and bitcoin is actually without ethereumn that continued accessibility of cryptocurrencies, just a propaganda coin that is spread to annoy everyone.

whenever there is a congestion the whole ethereum network is crippled and medium cost of a transaction goes up just like bitcoin. it has reached up to $4 in the past.
besides if transaction fee is all you care about then go use literary any other altcoin, they are all with much lower fee because nobody ever uses them. or better yet go use one of those 100% free coins like NANO with always 0 fees.
15168  Economy / Speculation / Re: Not a good time to buy, according to this source on: May 09, 2018, 02:19:59 AM
So, what do you guys think? Is really not a good to buy?

well i am not a future teller but i know a lot about the past!
for example last year when price was $800-$900 and struggling to break the $1k resistance people were saying it is not a good time to buy and they were calling bitcoin a "bubble". then when price went to $1200 the "bubble talk" became even bigger and everyone was encouraging others not to buy. then price started shooting up to $2k and above...

not saying the same is going to happen here but remember that listening to others has never been fruitful when it comes to bitcoin.

15170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bed news of Bitcoin on: May 09, 2018, 02:08:41 AM
Now the bitcoin was attacked" by Warren Buffett, and the price has again spread down...

if all the "drops" were like this then we never had any problems anymore! price is still above $9k and what you call drop here has only been a 8% drop not to mention that it is till above the buy support level and even if it goes a little lower it still doesn't relate to what Buffet or any others said about bitcoin.
15171  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC almost break 10k on: May 08, 2018, 04:25:28 AM
there is a nice increase in the lowest lows that each time we see. it is safe to say that there is a good momentum shaping up but unfortunately it seems like some people don't want to see the rise above $10k (and possibly a surge afterwards because of the breakout), so they keep on preventing it from happening and as always we also have the day traders who keep on buying and selling in this small area to make tiny profit (2-5%) every couple of days which is also making it tough to rise.
15172  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help needed for Bachelor Research! - (Block sizes) on: May 08, 2018, 04:07:16 AM
But let's imagine that we built a blockchain based on the usage and the processing of images, videos and documents for digital forensic purposes;

If I understand this correctly, then if the block size is too small (less than 1MB), it would cause an image (let's say 100MB in size) to split/fragment? Or would the blockchain simply ignore any and all data of such great sizes?

you say blockchain but you think bitcoin.
when you think about bitcoin and the way it is using blockchain technology then you are thinking about a currency and the blocks here are containing monetary transfers. and also it needs to be decentralized hence all the limitations,...

but when you say blockchain you are talking about a "database" where you store files so you shouldn't think bitcoin anymore, you should  think a chain-of-blocks where the blocks contain transactions which include files. there are already a couple of altcoins doing this "data storage" kind of thing. you should check them out:

15173  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to crack or decrypt keys to get Bitcoin Cash on: May 08, 2018, 03:48:34 AM
clarify what is it that you have exactly?
is it an Electrum Seed? if yes, is it in readable words or is it encrypted (protected by password)? and do you know the password?

is it an Electrum wallet file? if yes, does it have a password? and do you know the password?

is it an Electrum wallet file but you imported the keys in it instead of letting it create a new wallet for you? is this wallet encrypted and do you have the password?

basically you need to open your wallet in Electrum, copy private keys of each addresse that you like (you can use the filters to filter ALL and Used then right click and copy).
if you want to use console then go to the Console tab and type these codes in:
Code:
listaddresses()
this will give the list of all your addresses that your wallet is currently showing. copy the result with the brackets and:

Code:
getprivatekeys(_Paste_Here_)
paste it where it says _Paste_Here_. so it would look like: getprivatekeys(['1aBcD....', '1AbCd...., ...])
this will list all the private keys of these addresses for you.

in the last step you will be asked to enter your password if your wallet was encrypted.
15174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warren Buffett #BitcoinFOMO on: May 08, 2018, 03:24:44 AM
Warren Buffett, the revered billionaire investor, and a crypto bear yet again blasted bitcoin at the annual shareholder meeting of Berkshire Hathaway.
it is becoming more and more interesting that he keeps on talking about bitcoin everywhere these days! and the more buy support bitcoin builds up the more he talks about bitcoin! the question is why? it sure as shit ain't out of the kindness of his heart for our money Wink

~ claiming Bitcoin is “probably rat poison squared.”

he is more correct than he realizes himself! bitcoin IS rat poison. the "rat" being banking system and the "poison" meaning killing the corrupted banking system.
15175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lightning Network - An attempt to take the fees from miners? on: May 08, 2018, 03:16:13 AM
No. instead Lightning Network will increase the revenue of miners even more!

basically for two simple reasons. first is as others said above, the on-chain transactions will still happen. in fact LN requires on-chain transactions and on-chain scaling to work best.
and second is because there is nothing stopping miners who already process transactions to run a LN node on top of their setup and gather small LN fees on top of what they are earning from mining! (the increased revenue part).

p.s. it is NOT PoS so stop comparing LN with it.

‘Enough Already’: Billionaire Mike Novogratz Says ‘Bitcoin Core is BTC’

to OP and everyone else who does this:
there is no "bitcoin core" to be BTC. there is only bitcoin which is BTC and then there is bitcoin-cash (an altcoin) which is BCH. stop using the word "bitcoin core" because it doesn't mean what you think it means! bitcoin core is the client (the wallet, node,...) not the currency.
15177  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Former Paypal CEO "bitcoin biggest ever scam" on: May 08, 2018, 03:04:14 AM
it feels very good to read this here!

this only shows that bitcoin is working as it should and it proves that bitcoin is growing bigger and bigger every day. because now it is starting to worry these people enough for them to make statements like this. PayPal's days are numbered now and they will be forced to close down shop soon or adapt with the new world with bitcoin as a big part of it.
15178  Economy / Speculation / Re: What happens to bitcoin? up or down? on: May 07, 2018, 04:32:22 AM
we can say that we have been in a bull market for a while now. specially when the drop stopped and the trend was reversed. it is no longer the same as before when the tendency was to go lower. it is all looking up. and for the time being price is struggling to go above $10k and that is only because of bear whales and the fact that they want price to stay here and also the short term traders who are repeating the same process of buying a little lower than $9k and at $9k and selling near $10k over and over to make small short term profit.
15179  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: All comments in blockchain on: May 07, 2018, 04:08:00 AM
there is no such things as "comments in the blockchain". the only thing we have that is close enough is OP_Return which allows you to embed arbitrary data in the blockchain. it is basically 40 bytes of data which can be anything from a comment to some other data as long as it is smaller than that size. you can see them here: https://www.smartbit.com.au/op-returns
play with the filters to see different results: https://www.smartbit.com.au/op-returns/eternity-wall

15180  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet receive still not done after 4 months??? on: May 07, 2018, 03:44:12 AM
install (upgrade to) the latest version of Electrum (currently 3.1.3) and your issue will be solved.

the problem is that BitPanda is using a SegWit transaction which old version of Electrum could not parse (due to a bug) so your wallet is not showing it.
issues 3798 and 3788 are discussing this. and this problem was solved 4 months ago! PR
