15301  Other / Meta / Re: Satoshi Nakamoto is a member of this forum on: July 08, 2015, 06:34:31 PM
I think that he is dead. The idea of him still browsing this forum also came into my mind, but the idea of him being dead is more probable than him still browsing the forums.
15302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Use cases. What do you actually use Bitcoin for? on: July 08, 2015, 06:31:09 PM
Was about to answer 5 choices but a message appeared in front of me saying that I can only choose 2.  Angry
I mainly use btc for saving and for online shopping. I don't want to get a credit card so using bitcoins to buy some stuff is a good thing for me. Smiley
15303  Other / Meta / Re: Can the Philippines PLEASE get their own sub-section? on: July 08, 2015, 06:19:46 PM

Gents: how come we're discussing the use of the Spanish language in a topic on a possible sub-section for the Philippines?   Undecided

Unless you have a bad understanding of english i think its pretty clear why we discussed about the spanish subforum, spanish language being the third most spoken language means that a lot of spanish speakers would be around the forum and if the subforum of spain its almost empty probably the philippines one would be as well, you understand now?

But that's not the case. Even though Spanish is the third most widely-spoken language in the world, that doesn't necessarily mean that Spanish-speaking people will join the forum and be interested in bitcoin.

About the Philippines subsection, I think we already have that? But it's just a single thread wherein Filipinos discuss random topics about bitcoins and some other off-topic discussions. I hail from the Philippines and I can fairly say that there are some bitcoin movements happening around here. Idk, the mods and the admin should be the one to decide on this matter because it seems that my kababayans (countrymen) are contented on having a single thread and discuss about bitcoin with their kababayans.
15304  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are we stress testing again? on: July 08, 2015, 06:12:43 PM
They better come up with a solution with this problem they are testing right now

The solution is to stop flooding the network with dust transactions.  I'm not sure what point "they" are trying to make with all of this, but it's not identifying any problem we didn't already know exists, and it's not working toward any solution.

They already identified a problem: if an attack is directed towards the network in the form of tx with no fees, it will certainly clog the network. Also, if we should see a significant increase in transactions in the coming years because of widespread use of bitcoin, then we might know how to deal with it too. But I agree, the testing should stop now. The result is pretty obvious: it clogged the network.
15305  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Stress Tests", Spammers, Attacks: Burning My Butt. Very Bad. on: July 08, 2015, 06:05:13 PM
Even if they get confirmed at the exact same time? Which transaction will be flagged as invalid by the network? The one with the fees or the one without fees?
It is not possible.  If they confirm in the same block, the block is invalid and will be discarded by all full nodes.

Oh now I get it. It would only be accepted by the nodes if I have sufficient balance to cover for the two transactions.

15306  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is even beneficial to people not using it. ;-> on: July 08, 2015, 06:03:19 PM
I have long realized that bitcoin made a large impact on the payment processing systems and financial schemes, especially the fast transactions and low fees. As more and more people rely on the internet to do their spending and shopping, more and more consumers seek for a better alternative to a credit card to facilitate their payment. Bitcoin posed a good standing in there when it comes to speed and fees. Because of bitcoin, other payment processing giants changed their system into a much more faster (?) and lower fees (?). Bitcoin forced that, no doubt, seeing that it is a threat to the modern payment processing and modern banking and money transfer system.
15307  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want bitcoins. on: July 08, 2015, 05:56:02 PM
Me too, I want it so bad. Sad

Buying is the most viable option among the methods you've listed here. If you have a job and you can keep some money for your habits or anything, why not try to allocate them on buying bitcoins instead? In that way you'll get bitcoins and there is a chance that it will grow in value over time, though there are no assurances in this one. Selling goods and offering your service can also be a good way to acquire bitcoins. The only investment you will need when you offer your service are your skills and your time.

Welcome to the world of bitcoin, mate.
15308  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Stress Tests", Spammers, Attacks: Burning My Butt. Very Bad. on: July 08, 2015, 05:49:39 PM
Never knew that this is possible until I read it today. However I have a question, what if I have created two transactions, one with fees and one without fees? I send 1 btc to the same address two times but with only different fees. Is it possible that the two tx be confirmed at the same time if I only have 1btc?
No, only one can be confirmed, and the other will become invalid at the same time.

Even if they get confirmed at the exact same time? Which transaction will be flagged as invalid by the network? The one with the fees or the one without fees?
15309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 3 Reasons to Get Your Girlfriend to Buy Her First Bitcoin Today on: July 08, 2015, 05:48:24 PM
The title should be: Three Reasons Why You Should Get Every People You Know to Use Bitcoins. Well, I once tried to tell that to my girlfriend, and I ended up carrying her to our bed because she fell asleep because of the terminologies and explanations I told her. However at first she was interested of the decentralized idea, but somehow got bored of different aspects, especially the security-related aspects of the coin.

You need to tell her what things she can buy with bitcoin to get her interest, my girlfriend has actually found a little interest after about 1 year of me trying to get her involved.  She checks her mobile wallet all the time to see if her bitcoin has gone up in value lol.  Best thing to do is give them bitcoin.

I was telling her the things she could possibly buy online if she has bitcoins. I told her that online shopping would be much easier with bitcoins but she didn't want to believe me.  Angry I offered to give her some bitcoins but she insisted that she wouldn't use it nor spend it because she doesn't know how and wouldn't bother to know how. I have a hard-headed girlfriend btw.
15310  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Stress Tests", Spammers, Attacks: Burning My Butt. Very Bad. on: July 08, 2015, 05:43:52 PM
your tx fee is very very low... this could take some time. even without an attack
I know and i regret now. Is it possible to undo things? to send somehow a bigger fee for that transaction? sorry if it is a stupid question but I am desperate.
Yes.  Two ways:
1. You can either create a new transaction using the same inputs and a higher fee, hoping for this double spend to confirm.
2. Spend the change output with a high fee, and hope for a pool practicing child-pays-for-parent to pick up both and confirm them.  Eligius, EclipseMC and possibly others do this.

Method 2 has a higher probability of success, as the double spend will have problems getting relayed to the miners.

Never knew that this is possible until I read it today. However I have a question, what if I have created two transactions, one with fees and one without fees? I send 1 btc to the same address two times but with only different fees. Is it possible that the two tx be confirmed at the same time if I only have 1btc?

I just learn how important signing of messages are.I will like to helped with the steps to signing a message and why is it important?
How does signing a message affect your account?

Signing a message using your address is a surefire way to verify that you are indeed still in control of the account. If you can sign a message with the bitcoin address indicated in your account, then we can say that you are the true owner of the account. This can be done on your wallet. Btw, which wallet are you using?
15312  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are we stress testing again? on: July 08, 2015, 05:38:08 PM
It's an attack at this point guys... We need to do something.. increasing the block size is not the right path.  Dynamic fees IMO are the way.

We already have that. Bitcoin core does a pretty good job to determine the fee for a given block the TX should be in.

but it doesn't force them. I think that was his proposal. but I'm not sure if that's the final solution

Id rather not have a client thats forcing me to pay a high fee just because someone is currently burning money on the network. Im perfectly fine to pay the same fee as always and wait a day. If I want something to go fast I can always increase the fee, but its still a decision I want to make myself.

Same here. My transactions went through within an hour with the minimum transaction fees I can put to ensure a faster confirmation. If the transaction is not that urgent, I can probably lower the fee for me to save some satoshis.

In regards with the stress testing, it seems like the testers are pushing the network to its limit. They better come up with a solution with this problem they are testing right now, or they should help the devs to create a solution in case transactions in the future see a rapid growth and spike again.
15313  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the cold storage wallet? on: July 08, 2015, 05:32:20 PM
Cold storage wallets are wallets that aren't connected to the internet to prevent being compromised. Cold storage wallets usually contain a large amount of bitcoins and is purposely done so as to prevent someone from spending it and only keeping it for long-term. It comes in several forms, though the most widely-used form is the paper wallet which could be printed and be kept somewhere safe. Hardware wallets are also a thing, and it is also a cool and secure way to keep your bitcoins. Suggestion for a hardware wallet: Trezor.

any one knows when is the next stress test going to be ? i would like to be ready before sending out any transactions with manual fees last time i was stuck for like 6 hours with no confirmations.

Only 6 hours? Hahaha dude, i am waiting for more than 48 hours now and still not even one confirmation, WTF  Shocked

uhh, did you pay some TX fee? can you please post here TX of transaction? this seems very unlikely to me tbh. during last test, I tried by myself to sent 0.1BTC with 0 tx fee and it was done in 15 hours..

https://blockchain.info/address/1BnvHarta94JvXrY7oT272qTBEvgMdRk2S    Here it is, 49 hours and counting, the fee was 1114 satoshis. I dont know should i laugh or cry hahaha

your tx fee is very very low... this could take some time. even without an attack

I know and i regret now. Is it possible to undo things? to send somehow a bigger fee for that transaction? sorry if it is a stupid question but I am desperate.

Nope. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible just so you know. You have to wait for days or possibly weeks for that to confirm. In some cases, it takes a couple of weeks before a transaction is confirmed, especially if the sender put no fees for it.
15315  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING AN ACCOUNT on: July 08, 2015, 05:25:26 PM
I wanna buy an account and i wanna knw the kind of things i should watch out for when im buying a membership account on this forum

Use an escrow when dealing with someone to minimize the risks you might face. Escrows do a good job on keeping a deal safe and secure. Also, when buying an account, ask the seller first whether the account has been banned in the past or not (though I am not sure on how to determine this one) so if the time comes that the bought account will be banned for some reasons, it will not receive a perma ban (a previously banned account is likely to receive a perma ban if the account commits an action against the forum rules or break the rules per se.) Also, buy accounts only with trusted sellers out there because there are still scammers willing to risk their name to just get some couple of BTC on their hands.

There is no way to know if an account have been banned or not, so the seller can lie without consequences. You will only know if your bought account gets banned

That's why I enclosed a sentence stressing that it is difficult to know if the user was banned in the past or not. To prevent this, buy from a trusted account seller in this forum.

Just made another transaction, and so far it's getting better and better on my end, at least. Only took 30 minutes to have 3 confirmations. Smiley

15317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Definition of Bitcoin ? on: July 08, 2015, 04:57:25 PM
What is Democracy ?

Abraham Lincoln quotes : “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people”

What is Bitcoin ?

And, now we say : “Bitcoin is the currency of the people, by the people, for the people”

Great definition, but I would like to add my own: A trust-free cash system and a decentralized peer-to-peer cryptocurrency developed to provide people to use their money in their full control.

15319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Stress Tests", Spammers, Attacks: Burning My Butt. Very Bad. on: July 08, 2015, 03:44:13 PM
Stop the damn stress tests I say. I'd like to move money around like it used to be, with low fees and fast confirmations.

End the madness!!

I wish that telling them to stop is easy. This is not a stress test, people. This is an attack. If this is a stress testing, some people will claim that they are behind this, seeing whether the network could sustain this spams until it wouldn't work anymore to come up with a possible solution. Turns out, it isn't. People who posted that we've reached the peak of transactions don't understand what really is happening.

I think it's looking like an attack the longer it goes on. KingAfurah, the person who started the stress testing, said he wanted to study what effect increasing the mempool size to >150MB was in one of his last posts. He's been silent for over a week, but i think it's him doing the spamming.

So what's the point of this now that you know it won't actually delay legit transactions?

The point is to study the effects of a mempool size of >150MB which was never reached so far.

Hmm maybe he is still busy studying the effects of it. Well, it's already exhibiting in the network. I made a transaction 5 hours ago with sufficient fees and until now, 0 confirmations. Huh This is quite annoying, because I need those bitcoins in an hour. If he is up for study, then he must come up also with a plausible and possible solution to end this madness if ever this happened again.
15320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: CITIBANK DEVELOPING ITS OWN CRYPTOCURRENCY on: July 08, 2015, 03:33:37 PM
So basically they're just using this technology to ease online banking, not really to make their own currency.
It'll probably pegged to a dollar or to whatever currencies they're dealing with

Probably, because who wants to use a currency that is developed by a bank? Heck, most of us are only forced to use fiat just to make our financial transactions. And also I don't think many people wouldn't see the use of it. Bitcoin isn't that widely-used yet; not even known to many places in the world. So why would a bank create another one knowing that its predecessors are not that widely-used by people yet?

They are merely using the blockchain technology and nothing else. Doesn't mean that it will be in direct competition with bitcoin nor will it affect bitcoin price. Even if they have their own cypto what people are still interested in is the decentralized function. Not having that doesn't sound like crypto in the first place.

Bitcoin's main asset is the block chain public ledger. The technology in it is what lures other financial institutions to create a similar thing thinking that it would also be big as bitcoin, but no. I agree with you on the decentralized function, but I don't think the general public is even caring in that matter.
