I sold everything. Hope to buy back cheaper, when this whole core / xt-thing blows over.

Gavin's plan (as I understood from his posts) is to deploy a large-block version of the software now, but the change would be programmed so as to allow 20 MB blocks only starting in Q4/2016.

That way, hopefully most everybody will have time to upgrade to the new version and adapt their own programs to allow for 20 MB blocks -- including the major exchanges and services, and most miners.  If that happens, the critical date will pass without a ripple for those who have upgraded.  For the laggards and rebels still using the old version at that time, they will find that they cannot use the exchanges and services, or maybe even move their coins; until they upgrade too.

This is the way I understand it as well. Although the "losing" fork doesn't have to instantly die, we could see two Bitcoins. julian071... see you in 11 months?

Through version checking, we will be able to monitor the "votes" of the network.
1542  Economy / Speculation / Re: Stable, stable, stable! on: June 01, 2015, 02:41:35 AM
This stability will get Bitcoin zero publicity. There is no way the news is going to report that Bitcoin's price has done nothing for weeks. It takes wild price swings to get publicity.

But doesn't that make it harder for merchants to adopt Bitcoin? If it looks too unstable people won't trust it much. But would be nice if it was slowly increasing in value and not decreasing. Smiley

The merchants (few that there are), almost always convert to fiat at time of sale, making that point nearly moot.

I still think relative stability is a good thing. Serious people scoff when they see something go from $75 to $1200 and back to $200 in the space of a couple years. Can you imagine the change in perception if we simply gradually rose from 75 to 230 instead? Of course greed, crimes, and limited infrastructure got in the way of that last time.

Bitcoin isn't an upcoming actress, it doesn't need publicity for publicity's sake. This simply attracts illusory and temporary support. It just needs to be functional and preferable to alternatives for an evolving and growing set of use cases. The possibility of enduring survival and success will only follow that.

B) In order to write, chuka must first read. Has chuka read ?

C) Stop being an idiot. Seriously. It may appear to you that nobody can tell the difference between you and someone whose mind actually works, but this is merely a simptom of the problem. Everyone that's not you can actually tell you're an idiot.

Step right up egocentric contrarians and xmr shills. Hitch your wagon to the brightest star in the night sky. The best part: You don't have to propose an alternative, or do anything at all really.

I FEEL BEARISH

Why ?

I guess there is something happening in the backstage and I don't know it yet, com'on people, I'm a Bull and I want to understand what is going on  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

It's a little like being the battered wife of a cruel, bear shaped, and often drunk husband.

You hear the gravel crunch as he pulls into the drive late at night, likely returning from the corner pub. He may very well be coming up the stairs with a nice note and some flowers... but recent experience and memory tells you otherwise.

same volume of sales listed on dark market sites.

But how many of them aren't scams and will really deliver the products?

And won't be seized or disappear with everyone's money?

Sounds oddly similar to the "analog" dark markets.

A year down the road and stolfi thinks this ponzi will still be worth 80x the USD... bullish. Dump3er is even more bullish.  Cheesy

Yes, memorial day in the US. Markets closed.
1551  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Trading Simulator] A fun & free Speculation Game - ACTIVITY CHECK until 05/31 on: May 30, 2015, 04:37:43 AM
Bitcoin has really lost a lot of its value over the last few months.  It seems those who sold all of their BTC did better.

Nothing would annoy me more than having the rules changed in the middle of the game.  However, a game like this one should from time to time, introduce a haircut fee and other things that we see in the real world.  A fee for inactivity or simple confiscation does happen in bank accounts but this does not happen in bitcoin accounts.  Randomly, users should lose all of their holdings bitcoins out of those who have traded recently in order simulate hacking of exchanges for you really can't instantly remove your bitcions from the exchange, and those who are not trading will have their bitcoins in keys they control .

Holding for now.

Btw, 550 transactions with less than half a cent fee took less than 4 hours to clear - even during an intentional spam attack on the network that saw unconfirmed transactions exceed 25,000.

There is no evidence that bitcoin will crash and burn once we reach the block limit. I would rather tackle the problem of sustainable transaction fees to support the miners now when the network is still small than push of the problem several years into the future when the network might be several times larger.

I agree that block capacity is not an issue now. But is the time of 25btc and 12.5 btc block rewards the time to be seeking byte size rents? Maybe we should allow the network to grow to the point in which the benefits of using the chain are much more meaningful? It is good to test a child when they are young, but also important to let them grow and adjust to the level at which they can withstand the test.
1553  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 30, 2015, 04:04:11 AM
what is the meaning of your stuff?
(that we are going nowhere but down, I guess)

It is just data.

Thanks for the effort Stolfi.

An illiquid pink sheet and a nasdaq nordic etn from KnC are about as exciting as they will be. The SEC should just green light COIN now, the lack of interest might serve their interests.
1554  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 30, 2015, 12:13:25 AM
Lol 26000 unconfirmed transactions. And blockchain.info is lagged like shit.

I think what's happening is other nodes are hanging onto 26,000+ old transactions while blockchain.info drops them after a certain amount of time, with only 5000 transactions, hence the discrepancy.

Where do you get the 26000 number?

I suspect many of the transactions will be considered spam or below the dust limit or whatever.

I'll be watching this guy's attempt to see if these transactions ever get accepted.

For context, I've seen a backlog of 6900 transactions on an exciting trading day.

Edit: It seems that bigger blocks would make a tx spam DOS attack more expensive for the attacker, not the other way around.
1556  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is bitcoin so stable now? on: May 29, 2015, 11:43:43 PM
It is strange isn't it.
My memory is awful, really awful but I can't remember (without researching, digging around etc) a time when the price has been so stable for such a long time.
We've been floating between 220-260 for quite a while now.
Bitcoin is still in it's infancy, it's not like a settled currency is it so I imagine this is just coincidence, a phase if you like.
It'll go up or down pretty soon at a guess.

credit goes to /u/azop

Perfect setup for a long straddle. BTC needs more liquid and respected options markets.
1557  Other / Archival / Re: Ross Ulbricht sentenced to life. Good or bad news? on: May 29, 2015, 11:30:49 PM
Bad news for Ross. Bad news for his family that spent everything on his defense.

Non-news for Bitcoin, especially bitcoin price.  Undecided
1558  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 29, 2015, 11:23:41 PM

And... the "stress test" has hit a whopping 1,901KB worth of unconfirmed tx. I've seen it be a multiple higher than that on just a random day.

Tis climbing tho
1559  Economy / Speculation / Re: What does it take for Bitcoin to go 100X? on: May 29, 2015, 04:48:03 AM
Today is May 20, 2015. The price of Bitcoin is around $233 US Dollars.
Q: What does it take for Bitcoin to go 100X? (10 000% price increase)
A: 300 billion dollars.

Like it took $3.1 billion tossed at mtgox for the 2.5 to 266 run?
1560  Economy / Speculation / Re: Could we really go wrong/bad after all these efforts ? on: May 29, 2015, 04:40:57 AM
we are still in early development stage and bitcoin is consider now as experimental.
Bitcoin has been operating longer than Instagram, Pinterest, Vine, and WhatsApp.

Nagle's turning bullish.

Bullish? All those companies exploded in valuation and use in less time... Ask the general public about Bitcoin? "Oh I heard about that..."

That said, Bitcoin is uncharted waters, with a nearly impossible goal, thus carrying a much steeper risk/reward profile than an emerging messaging/posting host.
