I wish you luck with this, but there is no way you're getting anywhere close to $200K without getting shut down by paypal.

Anyone want to place bets on how long that paypal account survives?

This might make for an interesting Sixth Amendment case.
In addition to PayPal we also accept Bitcoins at the donation site:  www.burtw.com

Yes, the sixth amendment need to be amended to read  "If they can afford it."

I was arrested for trading Bitcoins, on Localbitcoins.com, in Colorado.

So far defending myself has cost our family almost $200,000

We can use all the help we can get, please see the fundraising web site put up by my wife Jean:

It's a bit unbelievable that you spent $200k on legal defense. Perhaps you mean you've lost $200k in assets due to government seizures?

I think the best lawyer would 'only' cost $10-20k.

Anyways, best of luck, it's a truly frightening situation.
Obviously you have never had to hire TWO good federal defense firms, one for the criminal felony charges and the other for the civil forfeiture.  As I said, my defense is approaching $200K, this does not include the property (money, Bitcoins, etc.) they seized and want to keep.

While I have heard good things about localbitcoins.
I believe the safest way to buy and sell BTC is on an exchange platform.

Although localbitcoins is well established, cash and face to face transactions must be done with great caution and coordinated properly.

There are a myriad of  potential dangers that one must deal with when exchanging funds in public location, example armed robberies and in some cases con-artists supposedly "forgetting" their laptops and borrowing yours with which they may plant malware or create exploits in order to later compromise your system.

Or getting arrested.

mmm florid  Undecided .... u might need to relocate
There is nothing special about Florida except it was done first.  After Florida then came Colorado, your state could be next.

No, there is no money laundering charge.  It is for selling Bitcoins, on Localbitcoins.com, in Colorado, without a license.

1570  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Localbitcoins noob here... on: October 09, 2014, 07:54:00 PM
One of my accounts was frozen and then closed for trading on localbitcoins.
One of your bank accounts?  Happens all the time if you are taking cash deposits from all over the country/world into your bank account.  Don't do that.  Cash in person face-to-face transfers are the way to go.  Banks can go screw themselves - oh wait, they are doing that already.

1572  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Localbitcoins noob here... on: October 07, 2014, 04:10:36 PM
Start with only in person face-to-face meetings in a public place with lots of people - like a coffee shop.

Start with smaller amounts, less than $1,000 for example.

Build from there as you learn.  Good luck!

1574  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 400 European Banks Accept Bitcoin Purchase Agreement. FRAUD WARNING!!! on: October 07, 2014, 03:24:32 PM
I really hope this does not happen to bitcoins.

If you mean shorting then people already do it all the time - any time they sell BTC.  You can also borrow BTC in a margin account in order to sell them at https://www.bitfinex.com

You can also borrow USD in order to buy BTC on margin - do you think that is evil or is only the borrowing of BTC in order to sell them what you dislike?

I lend a lot of USD and BTC all the time there.  It is great because as long as the exchange itself it honest and viable the USD and BTC I have there are safe and the exchange takes care of getting me my principle and interest back.  Assuming an honest exchange my loaned out funds are safe because my loans never leave the exchange.  Works great, please don't try it because according to many here loaning funds is the root of all evil.

Shorting, buying BTC, shorting on margin, buying BTC on margin are not the evil things you make them out to be.  Even fractional reserve accounts will have their place and no amount of hand wringing on your part is going to stop it.

The point is that it is your choice whether you want to participate in these things or not.  Participation has its rewards and, of course, its risks.  If you want to play it safe then put your BTC into cold storage and put your USD into cash and hide it in your mattress.  If you want to make interests then loaning your BTC and USD to speculators on a reputable exchange, depositing your USD or BTC into an interest bearing fractional reserve accounts, etc. should and will eventually be available to you.
1575  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: Android Bitcoin Wallet Backup missing some bitcoins on: October 06, 2014, 04:38:54 PM
Well, what i understand is that if you do a backup, it’s on the coins in the wallet (at that time). So you will not be able to get back the coins that you got after the backup, that’s why you need to do backups all the time.

 Undecided
Kind of, well sort of...

The question is:  did you create any new addresses that you used to receive the BTC after you did the backup?  A backup is the backup of your private keys.  All transactions using the private keys in your backup will be there.  However, if you:

1) Create a few Bitcoin addresses
2) Backup the private keys for those adddresses
3) Make some more Bitcoin addresses
4) Fail to backup the new private keys
5) Lose the phone

Then you will have all the BTC that were sent to the addresses you created before the backup but you will lose forever the BTC sent to the addresses you created after the backup - since  you failed to back up the private keys.

In the future use a deterministic wallet such as Wallet32 for Android.  You only have to backup the seed used for the wallet once, then you never have to worry about backups every again since every Bitcoin address and every change address used is calculated from the one seed that you back up when you create the wallet.
1576  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 400 European Banks Accept Bitcoin Purchase Agreement. FRAUD WARNING!!! on: October 06, 2014, 03:04:37 PM
There is nothing you can do to stop the creation of BTC derivatives, contracts, etc.  So stop worrying about it.  If two people/entities want to create a contract between them that says if BTC goes up you owe me X dollars, if BTC goes down I owe you Y dollars more power to them.  Why do you care?

There is also nothing you can do to stop me from lending out my BTC to someone so they can short the market.  Mind your own business.  If I want to lend my BTC out for the interest that is my prerogative.  Stop worrying so much about what other people do with their property.

If you want to keep physical possession of your BTC then do it (highly suggested).  If you want to lend them to a bank or exchange in order to make interest then go for it - but you might lose them all so be careful.

All this wringing of the hands about something that is absolutely certain to occur (contract and derivatives) which is also something that you cannot stop and really cannot be stopped is just plain silly.

In fact if you are certain that this news is going to drive the market down then you should short it.
1577  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BETA TESTERS] needed for new Hardware Wallet on: October 06, 2014, 02:43:08 PM
I am confused a bit by the monthly charge for broadband.  Is this a WiFi device or does it use the cellular system?  Can you go into more details concerning the connection?  Is this the only connection from the device to the "outside world"?

Any other details you can offer would be great.  I am specifically interested in security measures and how your software and hardware will be audited.  Open source?  Etc.

You have two posts now...
1579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: Bitcoin Wallet for Android Balance is off on: October 05, 2014, 12:25:10 PM
It wouldn't take that long to just check off all the transactions from the wallet against all the transactions in one of the block explorers to see which transaction is different or missing, there are only 118 to check, right?  Once you find the different/missing transaction we can see if there is anything special about it.
1580  Economy / Speculation / Re: URGENT, Bitcoin is on the verge of collapse !!! on: October 04, 2014, 05:59:33 PM
Sorry, my mistake
The mining factor is 0.3 cent/Gh at 24h !!!   (not 3 cents)
In order to get more precision you should change your posts to $/Th per day instead.  $/Gh per day is no longer the correct units as the price drops and the hash rate climbs.
