15861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Was Bitcoin shut down for 8 hours? on: April 04, 2015, 03:12:06 PM
If you want to forcibly shutdown the bitcoin network temporarily, you can do so with a 51% attack, a Sybil, or exploiting bugs/exploits in Bitcoin Core (which is arguably what the March 2013 issue was, someone could've exploited the situation to double spend coins, IIRC OKPay had a transaction double spent). It is incredibly difficult to do, but it is POSSIBLE, and those who say otherwise are misinformed.

So, we're establishing facts here.

It's incredibly difficult/highly resource intensive to do, and only temporary. Whereas, when everyone is convinced to co-operate, the network can be shut down very effectively.

"Impossible to shut down" makes it sound like some kind of perpetual motion runaway train, and that's clearly absurd.

So, in summary, the network is exceptionally resilient in practical terms, but also not so unwieldy that it can't be stopped when the actors agree to do so. And also that absurd comparisons are absurd.

What other users don't know about is the fact that hacking or compromising bitcoin's security is theoretically possible. But to be able to achieve such a feat, one must have a very powerful machine or machines to aid them in computing the necessary prerequisites before you can disrupt the whole network. I doubt it is achievable within a span of 10 years, but who knows? With the technological advancements mankind had within the last century, everything is possible.

But still, feel a bit violated Shocked

You should be very happy that you are not banned. I've seen many people banned recently and I'm seriously scared right now. I don't know how many posts I can write without being assaulted by banning team.

Afaik, there isn't a certain number of posts that you need to accumulate in order for you to get banned. The main point for you to get banned by posting is posting nonsense post (usually bump, +1, single pictures etc.) and replies that are really far from what the topic really is. You can actually post as many as you want and as you like, as long as it is constructive and doesn't stray away from what is being tackled upon in the topic.

Have you read the forum guidelines?  Huh

Is there any truth to this tweet?
https://twitter.com/patio11/status/583701441866371073

Patio11 is generally well respected and even though I have been in Bitcoin for a long time, I never heard of this 8 hour shutdown.

His tweets are getting lots of coverage right now.

(The entire tweet storm starts here: https://twitter.com/patio11/status/583696870704152576)

He seriously needs to know the difference between the Bitcoin network and bitcointalk.org
It is true that the website is down for several hours, but the bitcoin network isn't. If that happens, that means all the miners in the world turned of their hardware or a major hack happened (which are very unlikely to happen). Get some facts straight before posting anything to the social media or else you'll get criticized by many people.

15865  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin Really End World Poverty? on: April 03, 2015, 05:57:33 PM
Can bitcoin really do anything to solve world poverty problem? Brian Singer certainly think so. He thinks that Bitcoin can bring minimum everyday earning for people more swiftly than any other economy system.

Is it possible?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/steveforbes/2015/04/02/how-bitcoin-will-end-world-poverty/

Honestly speaking, bitcoin wouldn't solve the world's poverty issues. The problem in poverty is on the hands of those in the authority; the powers governing this world. After all, we, the people of this world, are the ones who create crimes and oppress each other for the benefit of the few, so I don't think that bitcoin--or any other similar innovative technologies to be invented--are going to end poverty. It can help, but the outcome would still be in the hands of the people using it.
15866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Investor from the Fiat-area is looking for bitcoin investment tips on: April 03, 2015, 03:51:38 PM
If it's fine by you, may I ask what kind of business do you guys have? Also, if you're looking into adding bitcoins into your investments, why not integrate bitcoins into your existing business as well? Also, if you are offering services, try asking for bitcoin payments too. As for bitcoin investments, buying bitcoins can be considered as one. Trading is also a way to go but if you guys are not yet familiar on how bitcoin trading works, stay away from it first and try to educate yourself about it before going deeper.

Hope your business succeeds! Cheesy Cheesy

If people actually buy into this shit despite our warnings then it's their own fucking fault as far as I'm concerned.

Those greedy people who doesn't do their homework before taking part into any of these activities are losers. And no, I will not show any remorse to those who'll get burned joining those services. They had been warned.
15868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Everyone has heard of bitcoin! (actually.. most still haven't) on: April 02, 2015, 08:00:03 PM
Everytime I pay for something I always ask if they take BTC.  Try it, see how many people ask you what the hell you are talking about.

Furthermore most of those people that actually have heard of it think there is some Bitcoin CEO..
Yeah, I have never seen anyone taking Bitcoin in real life. Those that say "everyone know about it but noone is accepting it" are obvious FUDsters that go on the ignore list.

Many merchants and employers here in our country already know about bitcoins. The thing is, they are scared of the high volatility in price that might affect their businesses and clients as well. They know about it, true, but are scared to touch it because of those roller coaster-like charts. Give them time to think about it and they will probably consider accepting it in the future.

somehow I do not believe that he really satoshi Nakamoto?
There should be some major news sites that proclaim bitcoin this, then I believe.

The thread and the link is still all about the April Fool jokes. If you click on the link, you'll see that there are the words "April Fool" and if you have read the link (which I know you have not), you'll see that it is indeed another one of those jokes. Believe me, this "April Fool" thing will continue on for a month. After all, you're on the internet.
15870  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you have a feeling BTC has slowed down a bit? on: April 02, 2015, 07:51:33 PM
One of the problems I think is that there a little immediate rewards for getting interested in crypto. Well, ok, you buy some bitcoins, then lose a bit on gamble, a bit on scammers, a bit for other things mostly because of noobish mistakes and the experience is not that good. Another scenario is that you buy something with bitcoins, but overall you don't save much if at all. I mean if people are not enthusiastic then the rewards are not enough to get interested and give a shit for crypto currencies. Of course somebody will say - but they can become millionaires in future if they hold. But the thing is that to most people these promises looks like a general scam or some shady scheme like those pyramid sales of hygiene shit products.

I've introduced bitcoin to my Economics teacher last year and the thing that really hurts me as a bitcoin user is this question:

"So, is it a scam?"

I had a hard time explaining the positive side of bitcoins to her. Also, I'm not a bs person so I also explained to her that there are some crimes happening around the bitcoin ecosystem as well. The thing is, most user fail to explain to other people the whole of bitcoin; the different sides of it and what it really means to hold a piece of the digital currency. If we, as users, deliver everything that a potential user need to know, then maybe he/she will reconsider everything first before saying no or staying. It's hard to see people cursing bitcoin to the ground after they found out of themselves that bitcoin is related to many dark activities in the interwebs, and in the real life as well. I don't know but this was the impression shown to me by the same economics teacher that I'm talking about. If we only deliver every single aspect and side of bitcoin, we might as well get serious people who has a strong belief in bitcoin because they already know what they are going into, instead of having people believe that bitcoin is all good. Fiat is also tainted with crimes and the likes, so as every other currency available. Then why not tell it to others while it's early? It's like giving them a warning that this is not all about good stuffs. You're holding money, and as history states, money is tainted and is forever attached to crimes and illegal doings.
15871  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: "Known scammer Josh Garza of GAWMiners launched a Bitcoin exchange - Mineral" on: April 02, 2015, 05:47:57 PM
Agreed , this appears to be a maneuver to remove his involvement with past fraud.

More background - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=900970.0

Josh and Gaw claim not to own or be directly involved in Mineral but there is no clear indication who the operators are which is very suspicious indeed.

This appear Toxic and the community is forewarned.

Has anyone tried suing this guy or something? We can't let them go on scamming people via different services!

Multiple journalists have indicated there are many investigations occurring with multiple departments and there will me lawsuits brought forth as well. Even using these sites and exchanges opens you up to possible investigation from departments issuing search warrants.

Its finally happening. The wheels of justice move slowly but the day of reckoning is upon Josh and GAW.

PayCoin Foundation, led by Mr. Adam Matlack, is now under a multi-agency investigation due to connections to Mr. Homero Joshua Garza. Civil and criminal proceedings are advancing and all paycoin investors will be scrutinized by multiple agencies including the IRS.

Search and Seizure warrant directed at GAW, Paycoin, and Josh:

Well at last, justice should be served. Pity to those who lost their money in the GAW, paycoin scam. Seriously, though, this dude really got the balls to perform yet another scam. He should go behind bars, and never partake in any bitcoin-related activities ever again.
I am surprised that you call paycoin scam, it is just another alt coin really. Everyone knew from the start that this coin is GAW's last resort, created after they were failing at Cloud mining/hashlet services and something to stay away from. Most of the alt coins follow exactly the same scheme, they are a scams too?

One way or another, the altcoin will also turn into an outright scam. Most altcoins tend to end up as "scam coins," as some people would refer it. Whether or not, people should stay away from those services and coin. Just don't.

As for the highlighted text, I didn't say that all altcoins are scam. It's just that Paycoin came from a scammer so I came to a conclusion that it is or it will be a scam too.

And then you have the anal retentive bungholes that just come back with capitalism. Well shithead, capitalism is what really ruined the US.

 Roll Eyes

How can such a country with all it's power, technology and resources be kicking families out of their homes because the banks were highly un-regulated and given bad loans?

The banks were forced by the government to give loans to those who did not really qualify.  But if you want to blame the banks, feel free.  The owners of the banks will appreciate that I'm sure.  You know those owners, right?  They are the working class families you claim to want to protect.  They hold ownership of these banks through shares in pension funds.

The banks are always trying to sell you shit, they literally have a schelude that they need to meet and sell shit to people, even if who is there is some granny that has no idea whats going on, a sign is all that matters. Banks are NOT your friends! ffs when will people learn.

People need to start seeing that having a loan or being indebted with these financial institutions is not a good idea. It is true that these banks will and may help you at some point in your life, but in the end, you'll see what their true intentions are. Banks are pigs, they are greedy, and people all over the world need to realize that.
15874  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin and macroeconomics: what influences BTC price on: April 02, 2015, 04:54:01 PM
the reason is simple, whales playing with the market

this is why adoption is needed, having few people with 10k coins each , can only lead to volatility and manipulation

And they're definitely enjoying the game they made all by themselves. Put in a large amount of new players (or adopters), even the small fishes, then definitely this whales will feel to weak against several schools roaming around their once controlled ecosystem.
THEY influence the price! TPTB, the ones who have the stock markets high and gold/silver low!

the influence will keep on happening even if there are thousand of new adopters, because a whale actually didnt work alone but consist of a group of few whale, 10k coins + bot cant actually manipulate the price if you work alone, a group, then yes it can be easily manipulate

And dont forget the actual cause of the volatility will be that there isnt actually a demand yet for bitcoin, so instead of treating it like a stock which has some fixed value, people actually treat bitcoin to be a trading instrumental, because the volatility is great and trader love it

Yes. A whale or a group of whales can cause some serious ripples in the water, but not all whales move synchronized. The contrasting ideas and actions of two whales (or even different groups of whales) can again cause some serious disturbances in an ecosystem. There goes those weenie fishes swimming around, hoping to fit in this new kind of environment. A whale can drive the price down, yes, but if there is enough support coming from a multitude of small fishes, then the result should be somewhat minimal, as the forces of the multitude fishes opposes the power of one single Moby Dick. But what about group of whales? Well that is another question.

If bitcoin sees serious massive adoption, then these whales can have their forces decreased, but still they can affect the markets significantly. The different forces that affects the markets are somewhat complicated to understand--which makes it more interesting to see what's in store for bitcoin given that there are whales and fishes that swim around this ever-growing ecosystem.

There are actually no different "forces" just actually different "whales" to force the market to go into a manipulation state
And about massive adoption. We cant really have a massive adoption "yet" simply because the major use of bitcoin is to be a currency, no one wants a currency with such high volatility, perhaps not now, but soon

If you don't want to call it "forces" then "entity" might be a fitting name. Different entities affect the markets, and those entities have different ideas running on their minds. The market prices greatly, but not thoroughly depends on the consumers and the producers actions. It is still up to these entities in the markets whether or not the prices go up or down.

Yup. And it lasted for several hours before the forum returned its stability.

15876  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to earn Bitcoins? on: April 02, 2015, 04:40:35 PM
So, from reading all of the replies, I can conclude that these methods might be the best way to earn Bitcoins:

-Signature Campaign: Get to a higher rank and get about 0.1 BTC a month
-Gambling: All depends on luck, I might be able to earn a lot of BTC, but can lose everything
-Exchange/Trading: Exchanging (altcoins, wage, etc) into BTC or vice versa until I can get a profit
-Service: Having some kind of service that accepts BTC as currency

That's what seems like some of the ways. I'm already in a Signature Campaign with 777coin, so that's one way I'm earning BTC. Gambling... well, I've lost some. I don't think it's a great way of earning coins. Trading, I'll look into that. Service, I'll also look into that.

Thanks everybody for helping all the other newbies out there, including myself! Big ups! Smiley

If anybody has anything else other than the ones already mentioned, go ahead!

In all honesty, you can get up to even 1 bitcoin per month in signature campaign if you tend to be online for most of the day and actively participate in different topics without spamming. It is achievable, but for you to attain that goal, you must be very careful on what you post. Some posts that are too far from what the topic is can be considered as insubstantial post. And insubstantial posts are grounds for bans.
15877  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Decline To Support on: April 02, 2015, 04:34:03 PM
what does this Support mean? sounds like some group that buy at that price no matter what... Grin but i guess its not so, so what is it ? Huh

Support means someone who is willing to buy the price on a certain threshold, like for example, we are in the $230 price range. People who are willing to buy within that range and consider that a good entry point can be considered as support. The effect is that the certain price cannot be broken or cannot continue to fall down, as people consider that as a good price to buy in.
15878  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk down on: April 02, 2015, 04:25:39 PM

Though I've read that there had been some issues to the avatars back then (and it was one of the reasons why the admin disabled adding one) I still can't figure out why users link the re-enabling of avatars to the recent attack that had happened earlier. Huh

As DDos attacks usually happen when a virus has been downloaded or uploaded to the websites but it's not always the case. Earlier it happened because someone uploaded a virus as an avatar which led to the Ddos attack I read about Ddos attacks here: http://www10.org/cdrom/papers/409/

Theymos managed to recover the forum from this attack pretty soon as I have seen cases where it takes weeks to recover if the attack is a big one.

So it means that the cause of the recent DDoS attack came from an uploaded avatar injected with virus? Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not knowledgeable with such topics. Can you please elaborate further as to how avatars harm the forum and cause a DDoS. i'll also do my own research regarding what you have just said. Smiley
