i dont really care for folks that flaunt free electricy. its not really free and should be factored in. some is payig for it wether its your boss mother grandmother rich uncle or if you are setup in the trap abandominium mining via usa and a 96 vovlt phone line society is collectivly paying fr it mining is a waste of time imo if you really want to make money start trading securities and currencies or playing powerball

Agreed.  "Free" power just means someone else is paying for it.  I find it distasteful, and not because I'm jealous--I manage machine rooms and could easily increase my organization's electric bill for my own profit.  Or I could just steal money from the till--it's all the same at the end of the day.

Just to follow up on my post, look here at the average block size for the last 30days by pool. I think this gives you a good idea of the ethical pools vs selfish ones.

Mining pool   Average size
Solo CKPool       997,415
Kano CKPool      913,563
BitMinter            776,757
BitFury              764,694
myBTCcoin Pool  749,260
NiceHash Solo    749,069
KnCMiner           698,215
21 Inc.              660,633
BW.COM            653,842
BitClub Network 652,797
AntPool             643,672
F2Pool              577,282
BTCChina Pool   576,451
ghash.io           559,856
Unknown          535,832
slush                 527,274
Eligius             431,685

Could you continue discussing this observation?  I know for certain that some of these pools with lower average block sizes don't participate in SPV mining.  I recognize that a lower average block size != SPV mining, but I would like to understand this better.

Cheers.

before people invest on your service. i think you must upload videos of mining farm. Don't just photos, they will make people are not doubt.

I filmed a short one when I was there. You probably can still find it on YouTube. I also collaborated with a British artist and produced this one: https://vimeo.com/141600878 . I am aware that both are months old now and I have been too busy to revisit.

I had not seen this--thank you for sharing!

Have been sharing storage for over a month now, yet no reward whatsoever. Am I doing something wrong, because my disk space is getting used Smiley

You have to have at least 10K SJCX coins in the wallet you're mining to in order to get rewards.

For real!? I've read alot before starting, where could I have found this?

it will increase if you add to the principle.

Icon

Of course it will.

If you have sufficient principle the actual hourly interest will increase.  At the time I had over 8 BTC, and this was when the interest rate was at 6%.  The accrued hourly interest amount would increase a few satoshis a day without me touching the principle.  It compounded hourly.

edit: accrued amount, not rate.
167  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] HaoBTC, mining dividend paid out hourly on: January 07, 2016, 03:57:50 AM

3% is better than nothin. Smiley

Is there any compounding or the 3% interest are tied to the capital only?

Principle only, I sent .1 BTC and watched each hour same amount, it does not compound each hour Sad

You may need to watch it longer, or have a higher balance.  I have seen the paid interest amount increase consistently.

I'd love to see NastyPool added to the wiki.  It's a P2Pool node with some unique and exclusive features.

It's best if pool participants or admins maintain their wiki info.
If you post your username, I can manually whitelist you.
Shall I forward future requests your way via PM, Luke?
No.
Very good--it stands to reason that you're a busy fella.  I'll carry on here.
You can PM me if you ever need anything wiki related.
Cheers for that.

Anyone experience a issue where changing the pool information is not saving?

Have you logged into that device with SSH at any point?  IIRC making changes to the config manually (via the shell) could make the web interface not save changes.  Let us know if that's something you've done.

Bumping for awareness & educational purposes..... Wink
I've built a little tool to help visualize these blocks at bitblk.com.  F2Pool loves to drop empty BTC blocks, but it slaughters the Litecoin network.  I'm amazed more people aren't aware of this.

I'll be adding a bit of copy that describes the issue for users that may be unaware--if we keep talking about it maybe we can affect change!

Cheers.

Handy little website TracerX thanks adding to my bookmarks Smiley

Cool man, thanks.  I built it for my mobile so I could obsess over my pool without having to log in or sit there and try to count them one at a time!

I could not login to my account yesterday because I was not getting the verification code on my phone. Today, I am getting the verification code, but when I login, it's as if I have a brand new account. The bitcoin address is different, and most importantly, MY PREVIOUS BITCOIN DEPOSITS DO NOT SHOW UP. I already sent an email to support@haobtc.com. Please respond ASAP, I had lots of money invested in HaoBTC and am very concerned.

I am able to access my account, so the problem is likely not systemic.  I've had small deposit issues in the past, and the support was quick (within 24 hours) to solve them.  Let us know how it turns out, please.

This is excellent information, I appreciate it and your time! There are some misconceptions regarding how empty blocks come to be and without some general education we won't be able to facilitate change needed to squelch them.

EDIT:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=700411.msg11790734#msg11790734 - F2pool/Discus Fish publicly stating that even after SPV mining by chinese pools caused a fork in 2015, they had no intention to stop doing so, and don't believe that Antpool or BTC China will either.  You can see clearly that all 3 pools are still doing it just by looking at the sheer number of empty blocks they mine each week.

I'll stop thread-jacking, but I've got one more question if you would be so kind.  Under what circumstances could an empty block be mined "legitimately?"
175  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BITMAIN announces Antpool on: November 07, 2015, 05:48:13 AM
Thank you for your prompt answer!  I appreciate someone with your experience chiming in--it appears to me that there is a fair amount of misinformation regarding the subject.  I would like to have a full understanding of the issue so that I can help educate others.  Could you point me towards the right direction, e.g. documentation of the mechanisms?

The exact implementation isn't publicly documented as far as I'm aware.  All we know is that they will begin mining blocks before their own full nodes have actually seen them.  Who they are connected to, how many sources they wait to see the block from before switching (assuming more than 1), etc., are not publicly stated by any of the pools engaging in this activity (its referred to as SPV mining).

I'll learn more on SPV mining, thanks!
176  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BITMAIN announces Antpool on: November 07, 2015, 05:32:30 AM
the bad thing is that this pool is one of the pools that is contributing to the slowness of confirmations by mining empty blocks with bad code..

Precisely. It's a little amusing to see miners who support a pool that doesn't contribute to the network complain about how long transactions take  Cheesy

I was having this same conversation with someone on Reddit earlier this week.  Pool _choose_ to submit empty block, am I wrong?  Bitfury has not posted a single empty block in the last week, while Antpool has posted ... 21 total empty blocks last week.  BitFury and Antpool averaged 22 and 28 blocks last week, respectively.

Am I wrong to conclude that the pools have a choice in the matter?

They have a choice.  It's extremely unlikely that any time in the last 2 years there has ever been a point where there was not a single valid and non-spam transaction waiting for confirmation even at the exact time a block was solved.

EVERY chinese pool currently is making the choice that is bad for bitcoin.  The excuse is that internet connectivity in China to the outside world is shit.  The workaround is to not rely on their full bitcoin node to see the newest block on the network, and instead use active listening connections to other sources to see a new block header (not the whole block).  If they see a new block header, they'll immediately push out new work using that as the previous block, without doing any validation (because their node hasn't seen the full block yet).  The only way to do this is by making a block without any transactions because you don't know what was actually confirmed in the previous block.

Even after it was clearly shown this is a bad idea (see the soft fork earlier this year the chinese pools caused), they have stated they have no intention of stopping this activity.  So now the rest of the network has to live with pools that don't do their fucking jobs, causing longer transaction confirmation times, because miners are too stupid to stop mining on pools that are actively hurting the network.

2 days in a row with the lowest blocks found (only 22).

It's a very bad luck (finding block) or something else ? The average is around 28-29 blocks per day, right ?
The average last week was 28 blocks, yes. edit: but that includes the last three lousy days as well--the November 1 blocks coming it at 37 brought that average up significantly.

Its all an average man.  2 days of bad luck is not uncommon and as actually very likely.  Look at the months range to get an idea of where the pool is at.
Debit is right.  The network is based off of a system that will, by it's very nature, mathematically average out over the entire life of the blockchain.  What that doesn't mean is that you won't have a particular bad week of luck, but that the longer you stay in the game the more likely it will be to average out for your personal mining endeavours.
