161  Bitcoin / Mining / Post your: Measured wattage of your mining rig! on: May 09, 2011, 04:32:33 AM
I know several people here have measured the actual power consumption of their rigs.

I measure mine using a kill a watt meter.

I just got into mining about 5 days ago, and I'm using my primary / gaming computer to mine.

I've ordered a second video card to double my output and increase power efficiency.

Please post:

1) Brief System specs
2) Mhash/second
3) Power consumption.

I'll start:

1) Core i7 930, 6GB DDR3-1600, 1TB HD, 1 SSD, 600W ModXstream PSU, 1 DVD drive, XFX 5830, Asus Sabertooth X58.
2) Currently at 285 Mhash/sec @ 965/185 clocks
3) Average 250 Watts when mining
162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Will pay bitcoins for help! Computer restarts using pool mining. on: May 08, 2011, 09:45:21 AM
Hi, I'm new to this...when I try to run the gui for pool mining...

my GPU quickly goes from 40 degrees C to 65, my screen goes to standby, and then the computer restarts itself, I assume to protect my hardware from damage.  Just wondering how I can fix this and start generating bitcoins with my GPU.

Am willing to pay someone some bitcoins to help me  ???this working.

I've tried setting fan speed to 100% but that doesn't stop it.

See link below for a  pic my GPU specifications and stuff.

I would first guess a power supply issue.  Can you tell us how many Amps the power supply has on the 12v rails?

If you know the PSU model, you can look it up, or there should be a sticker on the PSU itself.  It should say something like 12v1 @20A 12v2 @20A etc.  Some powersupplies have multiple 12v rails, others have one with a lot of amps on it.

If its a power supply issue, one thing you could try as a test is do underclock the graphics card.  Run it at like 50% its rated memory and core clock, then see if it reboots.  This will significantly decrease the wattage.

Also, when it restarts... is it flashing a blue screen at all?  Keep us posted!
163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US tax obligations with bitcoin increase in value on: May 08, 2011, 08:30:56 AM
This is the way I see it:

1) If you are buying holding then selling BTC for USD, then you should be liable for capital gains or short term capital gains tax.

2) If you mine and sell the bitcoins for USD, I see this as being no different than business income or hobby income, similar to if you mowed someones lawn for money.

If you classify it as business income, you should be able to deduct the full value of the computer(s) as well as electricity consumed.  You should also be able to get additional money for asset depreciation.

I think people should be able to keep 100% of what they earn but maybe you're speaking from a legal standpoint rather than a moral standpoint.

Yes.  Technically any amount of money earned more than about $500 the IRS "requires" you to report it.

166  Bitcoin / Mining / Deepbit problem? on: May 07, 2011, 09:07:15 AM
In the last 3 hours, my BTC has not increased on Deepbits site!

I'm generating at 280Mhash/s.  Anyone else having problems?

Normally its updated every single hour....
167  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Question: Is there any benifit in running two Miners, on one gpu? on: May 07, 2011, 08:57:44 AM
That kind of M/hash generation, its not worth the power, to power your pc's.  Get a powerful ATI video card... 5xxx or 6xxx series, or don't bother with mining IMO.
168  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Lowering mem clock to idle speeds SPEEDS UP Mh/s on: May 07, 2011, 08:28:54 AM
Man, how are you getting 290 Mhash/s with a 5830 @ 960Mhz.

I'm at 960Mhz now and averaging 275Mhash/s....

whats your mem? are you using pheonix 1.4 or the newest poclbm?

1.4.  Also, I forgot to mention I was using aggression = 7.  Now with Agression = 11 I'm at about 285Mhash/s.

Whats strange is I've run into a wall.  I can increase my core to 970 or 975 and get Zero increase in performance over 965.  Strange...

I'm now at 965/185 running strong @ 62C @ 60% fan.

Also, I'm running Win7 64bit with Stream SDK 2.4.  I read some people say 2.1 is better and I'll get better results?

Mining with an nVidia GPU is not very cost effective and may have NEGATIVE profits (if you pay for power yourself).

Also, I don't know about nVidia GPU's, but with ATI cards, memory clock does not matter and should be set as low as possible for the card to be stable.

the Core clock should be increased to speed up the number of Mhash/s.

With my 5830, decreasing the memory clock from 1000Mhz to ~300Mhz, dropped temps by 5-6C and dropped power consumption by 20-25W! Smiley
171  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Lowering mem clock to idle speeds SPEEDS UP Mh/s on: May 06, 2011, 11:11:59 PM
Cool.  Gained about 2-3M hashes by dropping it down to 339.  341 and 339 give me the same.  Anything slightly higher or lower give me like 1M less.

This also decreased my card power by 20W, and temperature by about 5C!  Grin

Currently running a single 5830 @ 920Mhz.  Agression is at 7.  At 11 I will gain a few more M hashes.  I get 264Mhash/sec now.
Please try mem clk at this speed, 920/3 + 14, that's 320.66= 320 mhz & post how much Mhash/s u get.

At 920/320 I get 263-264.

At 925/324 I get 265-266.

You might be able to OC that all the way up to 960. Hell, I saw Frankiebits say he had his at 1000 for a while...though I couldn't tell you how he did that. I run mine at 960, and I seem to have one of the most unstable systems on the forum in terms of getting the speeds everyone else is. 960 is damn stable, though. Tongue I get around 290 or so while using the computer, but I can't get my memory clock as low as I'd like. I'd say edge the core clock up by 5 and just keep an eye on it for a bit. Sometimes I'll launch like 3 Firefox tabs with YouTube videos just to make sure the system is stable before I OC it more.

Edit: If you do this, keep an eye on the temp. I use a tool called GPU Observer...it's a Windows sidebar gadget. Too lazy to link. Tongue

Wow... 960 seems kind of high. I may try it though.  I use MSI afterburner to monitor temps (dual monitors).  @ 925/324 @ 60% fan speed, I run at 61C.

So I did the tweaks to afterburner cfg file, and was able to lower my mem clock from 1000Mhz to 500Mhz, but the slider will not allow for more.

I see several of you posting going down to the 200, 300 and 400Mhz range.  How?

I have a 5830 under Win7 64bit.  Thx.

USA.  California specifically.
176  Bitcoin / Mining / Easiest way to cash out small amounts? on: May 06, 2011, 03:53:07 AM
I just started mining this week.  Have about 5BTC.  I'd like to cash it out just to see how it works.

I read there was a service like coinpal or whatever that was shut down.

Whats currently the easiest way to cash out small amounts for money or gift cards, or prepaid credit/debit cards?

Thanks!
