For those not opting for KnC hosting, can anyone recommend a pool?  Not sure what to go with since KnC's pool will be closed to hosted only...

So..difficulty is up to 31M already which concerns me.  As someone who has a Mercury on order that I don't expect to see until October at the earliest, according to the new mining calculator at the genesis block mining.thegenesisblock.com, things aren't looking favorable

For me, its looking like 140 days to break even, then maybe $300-$400 gain over that before losing money.  I could upgrade to a Saturn but those don't look much better - Jupiters still looking decent though.

So for me, as much as I want to support KnC, I'm considering canceling strictly based on current/projected difficulty...anyone else?

I did last week, made a killing. However I'm looking for a different VPS alternative because after the latest diff update this will no longer be profitable.

I'm thinking about switching to EC2. Anyone using them?

I have a microinstance at ec2 that absolutely sucks

Try linode or myhosting. They have 8  cores for $20/month.  Haven't tried myhosting yet but linodes service seems good although I've only found one block in the last 30 hours on my 8 core at linode

Thanks Mikaelh!  Love having the additional stuff in getmininginfo.  Can confirm my pps went up on an 8 core though still below were it was at before difficulty hit 9.

edit - pps improves more for me with sievesize=2000000 and sievepercentage=8

I've been mining with sievesize=4M for about 22 hours.
I found a block 4 hours after mining with this setting and nothing more for the next 18 hours.

So yes we still find blocks with this setting but it's not a "magical" setting even if the period is too short to draw any solid conclusion...

So I end up not knowing anymore after this test, the random aspect of mining is not helping finding the best sievesize.

It would be great if everyone shared their tests on this variable but i have a feeling some don't want to...

I've never found a block with 4M - only 1M and 2M.  But I think this has to do more with the randomness than anything else..

Did you find more blocks at 1M or at 2M ? And yes the randomness of the process is not helping finding the best settings as I've said earlier.

Too hard to say-again because of the random nature and me not doing the best to keep track.   Running everything at 2M now but no blocks in 24 hours..

I gotta say, that thread had unintended consequences for me.  I'm now on a decent vps with linode.com running 8 cores for $20/month.  Maybe you should make a new thread for their service - they too have a referral program  Grin

So..uh..my pps on all my systems just got hammered by like 20%...difficulty still at 8.99...anyone else notice this?

edit: Never mind - only lasted 5-10 minutes then went back to normal. Odd.
169  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin High Performance on: July 19, 2013, 06:49:39 PM
How can the sieve size be altered? I can't find any list of commands fro Primcoin-qt

Also, my currentblocktx seems to always be zero and rarely 1 - same with pooledtx. What does that mean?

primecoind --daemon -seivesize=2000000

Or whatever you need for seivesize.  Does not have to be 2000000

Soooooo, anyone got a block yet? To add some data 4 days 10,000pps combined, no blocks.

I was shocked to get home and see I found a block today with a vdi of ubuntu running at about 3500pps..  Meanwhile a vps running over 8000pps hasn't found anything in awhile..  Starting to wonder if cpu's really make a difference or is it just a lottery.

Do we need to adjust the sievesize in accordance to upcoming increase in difficulty?
Was the optimal sieve size ever determined?  What is everyone using with hp5?
172  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin High Performance on: July 18, 2013, 05:57:26 AM
WOW, already getting flooded with PMs.

Take off your tinfoil hats people. I'm NOT GPU mining. I'm simply running a lot of high power private servers.
then maybe stop broadcasting it just to brag
I don't mind answering questions/getting flames/etc, but apparently everyone thinks I'm beating out people because of a GPU miner.
Would have been beneficial to you and the board if you were just more explicit.  So you have 1 vpn? 2? and on each of these what type of servers? how many? how many cores in each?

Edit:  Also you imply VPS's are no longer profitable, when it appears you could simply duplicate what you're doing w/ vps so I'm not clear how its not equally profitable, unless you're using someone else's server in a datacenter whose resources are paid by someone else.
173  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin High Performance on: July 18, 2013, 05:45:49 AM
Nope. None of those are profitable anymore. Private VPNs. Pretty certain no one else is mining XPM with them.

uhhh...what? shed more light?
174  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Release - First Scientific Computing Cryptocurrency on: July 16, 2013, 08:00:50 PM

I need a block for crying out loud

Don't know what's worse

No more beer in the fridge or not finding a block in 20+ hours

Both are incredibly disheartening...

Would be nice if I could come home from work and find a six pack of beer show up in my fridge simply by having left my computer on running computations all day.

"We've actually never seen anything like it before," Mitch Wainer II, DigitalOcean's head of marketing, told El Reg via email. "This increase in usage was the equivalent of our normal growth that we would do in 90 days, now in 2 days. We temporarily disabled NY1 and AMS1 for only new customers. SF was always available for everyone."

[DigitalOcean capacity fail]
[Currency speculators floored two out of three of DigitalOcean's regions]

Over 18,000 people signed up to perform Primecoin mining, Wainer said. "Most customers were using a $10 promo code which allowed them to run a 512MB Droplet for 2 months." He confirmed that no DigitalOcean employee has been involved in promoting the cloud for its use among Primecoin devotees.

LOL you guys make me proud  Grin

Today, I saw Amsterdam and New York were down for emergency service and my vps's in San Francisco had an increase in pps - not sure if related or not.  But did not result in a sudden windfall of XPM as I had hoped..Actually thinking of shutting down my servers as the blocks just aren't coming.  But then I see the price is increasing..
176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Release - First Scientific Computing Cryptocurrency on: July 15, 2013, 03:11:52 AM
I think everybody here is highly discouraged and lost their enthusiasm about XPM.

Not me, seeing three immatures on each of my two dedicated servers out on the net was like wow awesome since I already checked hours ago that I was in net profit for the day so these are gravy.

EDIT: Oops make that four immatures, one orphan, and another immature on one server, three immatures on the other.

-MarkM-

Just got another block on an 8 core - payout at 13.01 so looks like we're going into 12 territory soon..
177  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin High Performance on: July 15, 2013, 02:52:01 AM
I'm getting pretty abysmal performance with this build on osx (using the osx makefile). 1player's build seems to be working better on osx while all other machines are better using mikhael's hp3. Any suggestions / optimizations to the osx makefile would be much appreciated.

I'm tempted to VM an ubuntu build and see how that goes but I'd rather run it natively in osx with this high performance build.

That's the route I took - VirtualBox/ubuntu -  been running 4 of my cores at about 3500pps with Mikaelh2 build.  Found 3 blocks but nothing in the last 24 hours
178  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Release - First Scientific Computing Cryptocurrency on: July 15, 2013, 02:45:21 AM
Anyone got a solo block recently?

I've found 5 blocks on one 12 core..  4 of them just within the last 3 hours..seems to be the case each time - drought for 8-10 hours, then 2-4 in quick succession.
179  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [FASTER!] Mining PrimeCoin using DigitalOcean (VPS) on: July 14, 2013, 09:55:23 PM
What version are you using? I'm getting x10 with ver1, then back to normal with ver2 Sad (linux)

I always get the latest, so this is ver2.

BTW I tried creating a 16-core droplet in NYC, getting 2x the PPS (about 4000) for 6x the price ($480 a month).

Something is wrong with that 16-core..I'm getting  around 7k with a 12 core using Mikaelh2's build
180  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [FASTER!] Mining PrimeCoin using DigitalOcean (VPS) on: July 14, 2013, 07:03:01 PM
Mikaelh's is definitely and improvement.  Found another 3 blocks in the last few hours. 2 on a 12 core and 1 on a 8 core. But also found an orphan which leads to another basic mining question.

When you get an orphan, I notice that the ophan amount appears to be included in the wallet balance, though it shouldn't correct?

So my question is, what are you supposed to do with the orphan blocks and is there something you should do to remove them from your balance?
