161  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing Cardwars on: May 24, 2011, 08:47:39 AM
Even if I'm a "pioneer" and still have some dusty-BTC, I don't have a limitless supply of it.
Being alone also makes things hard, as I've to sleep from time to time leaving the casino on its own.
Keep the stakes low on games until they've run long-enough that you're confident that your code is not exploitable. Place cash-out limits and/or cooldown times before winnings can be cashed out to give yourself time to investigate any large wins that look improbable. Even B&M casinos start watching players who seem to be winning too much. As they leave they'll have casino staff delay them while security reviews the table cameras for anything fishy. A common tactic is to make anybody cashing out above a certain amount to come to a private office - make them wait for the duty manager (who's in a meeting / other delay etc...)
Also consider bringing in help. It'll cost, but worth the peaceful sleep to ensure that the shuffle algorithm are good.
162  Economy / Services / Re: [CentiMine] Anonymous mini-mining contracts on GLBSE on: May 23, 2011, 12:32:31 PM
Okay - I've setting notifications on for this thread. I'm hoping that eventually you'll work out your pitch (clear offer) and have margins that I'm okay with. At that point I'll reconsider investing.

If you're going to change things on present shareholders then consider making the options clear then using the voting feature on GLBSE. Good luck to you.
163  Economy / Services / Re: [CentiMine] Anonymous mini-mining contracts on GLBSE on: May 23, 2011, 10:51:03 AM
I have questions:

What exactly are we buying? 40K bitcents is 400 bitcoins. At today's exchange rates that's over $2,800USD. That should buy about 1400 MHash/s worth of 3 month rentals from BitCoinRigs.com and still leave you plenty for you trouble. (By comparison the 400MHash/s rental contract is $840USD leaving you a tidy profit of about $2000USD. That margin is just too great!)

Is there something I'm missing here? I might invest if I knew what margin you're taking because it's fair you take a profit but it can't be exorbitant.

Otherwise - what a great idea!
164  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing Cardwars on: May 22, 2011, 06:52:37 PM
I'm not seeing where the house's edge is - and that bothers me. Basically when the cards tie - if the player surrenders the house gets half an ante. If they go to war then the player gets a 7/13 to 6/13 (1/13) advantage over the house. So never surrender and slowly win?
I'm really suspicious when I don't see how the casino is paying their power bills - makes me wonder if I'll ever walk out with my watch, wallet and shoes.
165  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Open Source FPGA Bitcoin Miner (Just Released!) on: May 21, 2011, 11:02:12 PM
There must be cheaper and simpler boards with the same or equivalent FPGA. If you buy this board just for mining, all those nice I/O ports and displays are going to waste.
I saw some cheap boards that were basically RS232+PMOD+FPGA boards - just trying to find them again. Add another $25 for an Ethernet PMOD and you've got a standalone miner. You could probably chain a few of them together to use just the one Ethernet PMOD.
I think the closest thing I've seen to what you guys want is: http://www.copacobana.org/ - it basically nothing but the minimum to run a butt load of FPGAs. Economies of scale much?
I think one of the things that'll drive FPGAs to better economies per MHash/s is good PCB design. You're right - once the design is proven in a development board it makes more sense to invest in custom PCBs for mass rollout.
166  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pain realizing early stupidity on: May 21, 2011, 10:39:45 PM
I'm extremely mad that the guy I was dealing with about two months ago has been so slow in getting me my computer which was going to be a dedicated mining rig. I'm out a huge amount just for that.
I put time limit for delivery as part of the terms of my sale contracts. If they breach them, then I cancel the contract. TBH I paid a tiny bit extra for a 6990 just because the business I was dealing with actually had it in stock. Nothing back-ordered.
167  Economy / Economics / Re: What happens if the US bans the use of bitcoins? on: May 20, 2011, 05:33:28 PM
Marijuana is banned in the USA - see how well that's worked for stopping people using it. If Bitcoin has use to people and there is no/little way the government can detect and enforce their bans then people in banned countries will keep on using it. It will stop legitimate organisations openly accepting it though - which would slow things down. Still USA != The World.
168  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Question about slush's pool and reward system on: May 20, 2011, 05:29:16 PM
I actually like Deepbit's system a lot better. It's a lot easier to keep track of earnings.

Well, main difference that on my pool you see your income in *realtime*, deepbit has all stats delayed for one hour. You just have to wait until block is confirmed to withdraw bitcoins to your wallet, but this is mechanism how bitcoin network was designed.
I prefer Slush's system much more because of the realtime payout displays. Yes, it's a touch more complicated but you can see exactly what stages your btc mining is at. Slush also has very pretty graphs. Any word on when long polling is coming to slush pool?
169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Losing my Bitcoins on: May 20, 2011, 05:22:38 PM
I would say you a bit of time and internet bandwidth to backup the whole data directory. *shrugs* I don't bother personally, but you could.
170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does your Bitcoin App and clients Bitcoin App need to be running to get Patment on: May 20, 2011, 05:21:07 PM
An address is a hash of a public key, which is derived from a private key. As long as you have the corresponding private key in your wallet, when you start bitcoin any payments sent to your addresses will show up normally (as soon as you download the blocks that contain the transactions).
I can confirm that Bitcoin actually does work like this in practise. My computer experienced a big meltdown and I could not run the Bitcoin client for a couple of days. During that time I received a payout from somebody. When I restarted bitcoin that payment showed up once it had enough time to catchup on the block-chain.

While my computer was down, I was able to confirm the payment had been sent by searching for my address on http://blockexplorer.com/
171  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Losing my Bitcoins on: May 20, 2011, 05:13:53 PM
Backup you wallet.dat file - that's the thing you need to prove your coins. If you lose your laptop then you can install bitcoin software someplace else, copy your wallet.dat into the right place and you're good to go again. Encrypt your backup!

Thanks for the heads up - I was getting a bit worried there!
174  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Question about slush's pool and reward system on: May 20, 2011, 05:01:32 PM
I've already noticed that slush pays out far more than deepbit over the same amount of time. I've only been mining on slush for a few hours and I already have 1 BTC. Compared to the ridiculous 2.5 BTC/24 hr on deepbit -__-

How do I manually pay out the BTC to my address? Is there a "send payment" link...somewhere? Or does it just have to reach the threshold?
Kia ora - Ni Hao

Slush charges a 2% commission. Deepbit charges 3% or 10% depending on which plan you're on. Also, there is somewhat of a luck factor involved so payouts on either pool (unless you're on the 10% plan) can vary by quite a bit. 24 hours doesn't tell you much.

Slush only pays when you reach the threshold. To pay out nearly instantaneously, just lower the threshold to smaller than your confirmed amount. You will be paid out when the next block confirms.
175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tycho cheating every miners & soon destroy total bitcoin network completely. on: May 20, 2011, 04:53:38 PM
Burden of proof is on the accuser. OP is ranting. Sure deepbit is too big - but it just offers too many advantages over the other pools. I'd move back to Slush if it implemented long polling and instantaneous payouts of confirmed blocks. (Waiting for 100 or 120 confirmations does not bother me).
176  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Open Source FPGA Bitcoin Miner (Just Released!) on: May 20, 2011, 11:06:37 AM
That's fpgaminer for opensourcing the code. Imma start hacking away!
177  Economy / Economics / Re: Demographic consequences of worldwide Bitcoin adoption. on: May 19, 2011, 04:26:45 PM
The last to adopt Bitcoins will be governments. They will not want to relinquish the control they exert on economic activity via controlling the supply of money.
178  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: An estimate of fpga performance on: May 19, 2011, 03:41:39 PM
The Xilinx Spartan-6 LX150T-3 has a PCI-e connector, does that mean it has to be mounted in a computer for comms and power? It's a nice board otherwise - I just don't want to have to buy another computer!
179  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Just getting started, confused by bitcoin client not connecting on: May 19, 2011, 03:16:10 PM
Block count increases over time and stays in sync with the one reported by blockexplorer (http://blockexplorer.com/q/getblockcount). I've run with -rescan several times, but nothing seems to happen. My balance is still zero. Perhaps bitgames just isn't working? If someone wants to send me something, in the name of science, my address is 17bHWvRo6hDT6jWraJAGZYUFBDzzxHkjNx
Just send you 0.01BTC
Let us know if you get it.
