VPN service. Paid a bit over spot equivalent of USD but still.
162  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Prepaid Credit Card on: January 20, 2014, 06:10:49 PM
A debit card would be Ok for most internet purchases (think Amazon etc.). Doesn't need to be a CREDIT card.

I think.
163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How would you like to see your Money Help our World? on: January 20, 2014, 06:09:22 PM
Any trustworthy operation working for bitcooin micro-loans to third and other world countries yet?

That would be very useful and am sure could help a lot of people, besides helping bitcoin too.
164  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the chances BTC is replaced by something better soon? on: January 20, 2014, 06:07:50 PM
In  the computer programming industryworld, Is C++, Java, Python, VB, etc better than Cobol ?

Yet hundreds of thousands, probably millions of lines of code are still operating and being maintained in Cobol, mostly in the financial world (big banks, etc.).

A random seach for CONTRACT jobs in the UK at jobserve.co.uk shows rates going for GBP 300 pounds / day for Cobol specialist.

165  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin mentioned on a TV show on: January 20, 2014, 06:02:57 PM

for someone who's thinking of taking trading a bit more seriously, where would you suggest to get the best info? traditional market/forex books, webinars, etc? any tips for good classes?
[/quote]

read with great attention and open mind, more than once if possible, especially all the parts dealing with psyhology and everything else, besides the actual trading techniques described (which are useless at this phase in bitcoin in my opinion):

and then his next book:

That if you take your money seriously. If not I suggest you save yourself the bucks and go for a weekend in Las Vegas, preparing to lose everything anyway.

One basic idea that helps me always is:

DON'T BASE YOUR TRADING DECISIONS ON HOW MUCH YOU COULD WIN, BUT RATHER CONCENTRATE ON HOW MUCH YOU RISK LOSING.  Shocked
167  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is my wallet safe? on: January 12, 2014, 05:52:54 PM
Cannot answer in details about the particular situation you describe.

What I know is that typically one creates a wallet in an offline computer (that is, a computer that will never be connected to the internet), and when you want to send bitcoin to that wallet you would generate a receiving address that you will then use in your online computer to give to whoever is going to send you bitcoin. The idea is that your wallet files are never online. All that is shown online are your receiving addresses. That as far as receiving bitcoins, if your intention is to have a safer wallet offline for saving.

For sending the process varies. Personally I like the client Armory which allows this that I am describing (see "watch-only" wallets). It also would allow you to send bitcoins from that offline wallet using a process called offline transaction.

If you are serious about your investment perhaps you should invest some time to learn how to use Armory. If not, maybe Electrum allows something similar in a more streamlined way.

169  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Comprar en España, Bitstamp vs Localbitcoins on: January 12, 2014, 05:36:21 PM
Hola,

Tengo una duda para los miembros Españoles del foro.

Teniendo a Bitstamp aceptando transferencias SEPA

170  Economy / Exchanges / Re: www.BITSTAMP.net Bitcoin exchange site for USD/BTC on: January 08, 2014, 05:16:45 PM
Deposit at Bitstamp by sending different currency than USD
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi

If one sends Euros or British pounds to deposit at the bitstamp account, how much is charged by your receiving bank to change to USD (aside from bitstamp's 1% fee min $15) ?

Does Unicredit (you bank) just do the exchange from Euros or GBP, whatever the case, to USD at the exchange rate shown on their site (*), or do they also charge a fee?

Thanks.

171  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What storage methods are resistant to hacking? on: January 08, 2014, 11:05:10 AM
RE: Online storage of files , not backup of files that remain on your computer too
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Online storage systems like Dropbox, Carbonite, Spideroak, etc. seem to be lacking one essential thing:

If I just want to upload some file (i.e. encrypted or zipped file with keys or wallet), but without leaving a copy on my computer, it seems like quite a hassle as those mentioned are more oriented to doing backups and synchronization of files that would be on your computer and on their website.

Yes, I know they save history of stuff you erase from your computer that you have backed up previously, but still it's quite confusing.

What online storage sites can you recommend that allow simply uploading files that you don't want to keep on your computer, so that you truly can have safely stored files remotely online, safe from your computer being stolen or hacked ?

I am thinking of things like mega.
172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is it safe to use hotel wifi? on: January 08, 2014, 10:54:38 AM
No always use a vpn

vpn only problem is that it gives problems with some websites (some online newspapers, forums, twitter, etc.).
But sure in a public place always use vpn no matter what, unless you have nothing sensitive to protect.
173  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Has anyone sent an international wire to BTC-E/BitStamp via US credit union? on: January 03, 2014, 05:38:04 PM
I can confirm bitstamp accepted a deposit in USD sent from Great Britain through Currencies Direct.

Maybe CD operates in the USA and you can send it that way from there too.
174  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: January 03, 2014, 04:36:06 PM
In Armory, a given wallet can create different paper backups (I mean, each paper backup has different set of 16 characters x two rows of character codes.) This is right ?

I ask this because after creating a first paper wallet, a few days later I wanted another copy but when creating another paper wallet for the same wallet, different codes came out.

No it should be the same afaik
The seed shouldn't change

Tks for the reply.
Yikes, I would swear that i did a test and a different paper backup came up. I will re-test and report here, thanks.

Thanks for all the replies.
I re-tested again and the reason I am getting to different paper backups for the same wallet is that in the first one I checked the thing for secure printing and the second not, which explains why I am getting different codes for each of the two paper backups. All OK I presume, thanks.

179  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Guide for trading on: January 01, 2014, 05:35:11 PM
Trading for a Living by Alexander Elder is, in my opinion, a must read for anyone that is going to engae in trading any significant amounts. It's a book that talks about stocks and other traditional tradeable securities but it goes deep into the psychology, the risks, etc.

Basically, and this is my opinion taken from experience and from that book and others:

- Be aware and accept that any money you put into bitcoin can be lost completely. Yes, you can lose all of your money, it is possible. If you cannot accept that then don't invest/trade.
- One of the most important things in trading is limiting your risk versus just thinking of how much you can win.
- When you engage in trading (not so much if it's longer buy and hold investing) you are facing the best mathematicians in the world, and the most sofisticated joints in the world trying to make money off your lack of experience.

Limit your risk, limit your risk, limit your risk. Trading is not a new science, there are thousands of expert businesses and individuals with the best and most expensive equipment and methodologies in the world to make money off of the newcomers like you.
180  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: strategy for late adopters? [short and long term] on: January 01, 2014, 05:24:47 PM
let's start saying i believe in btc to have a raise over the long term, actually i got some btc on some exchanges and i could even put more money in (but actually i have in other safer investment so for the moment i'm not touching that money).
actually rich people have a lot of btc and decide to sell for dimishing the size of their number of btc or they keep the btc go without selling them.

but what for people, like me, that have a certain sum available to invest but w a certain lag due to the sepa?
i should put all the money i can invest over the exchanges and then trying to trade profitably?
i sohuld put all the money i can invest over the exchanges and buy everything i could (if the situation isn't that bad) ?
i should put the money only when i'm ready to invest (so 3 days for a sepa) ?

at the end of the day how i count how much money i have? i count only btc or i count the $ ?

My thoughts (no recommendations):

- Any money I change for bitcoin I have to be aware I could lose completely <--- yes, that is a truism.
- For the long term Sepa lag of 3 days is irrelevant.
- For the long term: I buy at localbitcoins or at an exchange, or both and just hold.
- For trading: same thing, only that occasionaly I sell some to try to make money on the swings in price.
- If you don't have much experience with trading, why not just buy and hold for the long term (by long term we are talking weeks, maybe months only). Trading is a losers game for the great majority of people in the long run. You are up against the best mathematical minds in the world.
- You can also allocate part of your money to buy some bitcoin which you will hold, and then another part of your money to trade.
- How to count the money I have: a) Write on a notebook each lot of fiat money you change for bitcoin. This allows you to know at all times how much you have invested in bitcoin so far. b) Multiply the bitcoins you hold for the current selling price (which varies constantly) to know how much the total of your bitcoins are worth. Always keep good written record of how many bitcoins you have in case they are located in separate places.

good luck !
