I use cables, keeps things way cooler and you don't even need to mess with fan speeds.

wat? cables?
162  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BTC Guild vs Slush vs Deepbit thoughts? on: July 18, 2011, 10:08:32 PM
I have my rigs setup as priority as follows:

1. btcguild
2. deepbit
3. slush

If the primary pool is down or has any issues the miners will move to the next one down the list. Hard to believe, but I have actually had the miners go to slush after the others had issues. In regard to payout, BTCguild and Deepbit seem to be better than Slush only because Slush has had some really crappy connectivity issues for me.
163  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: MiningMonitor.com - Monitoring - SMS Notifications - Analytics [UPDATED PRICING] on: July 18, 2011, 08:58:50 PM
Do you have monitoring enabled for workers on two different pools?  Or are you trying to link workers on the same pool.

The link appears when you have workers for two different pools monitored.

Pete

Ah, ok. Makes sense. I'll have to enable the second pool.
164  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [H]ard|OCP bitcoin mining GPU performance comparison on: July 18, 2011, 06:03:21 PM
The 6990 is the best price/performance if you pay for electricity (like most people). That's what they're measuring.

Um, no it isn't. Unless you happen to have some magic numbers?

dual gpu cards have the least overhead consumption/cost. you need less mainboards, less ram, less cpus, etc. so if you could get a dual-gpu card for just a little bit more than 2 single-gpu cards, go for the dual-gpu ones. i'm not too sure how well 6 dual-gpu cards fare in a single setup, though.

These numbers are from june when I was spec'ing out system builds. I suppose the cost comparison to mhash depends on what you can get parts for, but this is from newegg. "base" is the cost of the MB+CPU+MEM+CASE+PSU.

   •   Base $411: 4x 5779 GPU (200mh/e) @ $130/ea. PSU: 800 watts. capacity: 800 Mhash/s. Total cost per box: $931. Hash performance per box/$: 0.859mh/$1
   •   Base $411: 3x 6870 GPU (280mh/e) @ $170/ea, PSU: 800 watts. capacity: 840 Mhash/s . Total cost per box: $921. Hash performance per box/$: 0.912mh/$1
   •   Base $366: 2x 6870 GPU (280mh/e) @ $170/ea, PSU: 800 watts. capacity: 560 Mhash/s. Total cost per box: $706. Hash performance per box/$: 0.797mh/$1
   •   Base $467: 2x 6990 GPU (700mh/e) @ $700/ea, PSU: 1200 watts. capacity: 1400 Mhash/s. Total cost per box: $1867. Hash performance per box/$: 0.749mh/$1
   •   Base $687: 3x 6990 GPU (700mh/e) @ $700/ea, PSU: 1200 watts. capacity: 2100 Mhash/s. Total cost per box: $2787. Hash performance per box/$: 0.753mh/$1
   •   Base $411: 3x 6950 GPU (350mh/e) @ $260/ea, PSU: 800 watts. capacity: 1050 Mhash/s . Total cost per box: $1188. Hash performance per box/$: 0.883mh/$1
165  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: for people who started mining recently, have you paid off your machines? on: July 18, 2011, 05:00:02 PM
Started in June. Obviously have not paid off the hardware yet. I doubt most miners that started in June paid off their gear yet. Fractions of the gear, of course, but not 100%.
166  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: MiningMonitor.com - Monitoring - SMS Notifications - Analytics [UPDATED PRICING] on: July 18, 2011, 04:55:12 PM

Now, if you are using a client with automagic failover support ( such as SmartCoin or guiMiner ) , you can link monitored workers together so you only get a down worker notification if the linked workers are ALL down.

For example, if you link btc_1 and deepbit_1 , when your failover kicks in switching you from one to the other you will NOT receive a down worker notification!

Great work Pete. Question: on my worker page I only see the 'purge stats' link, and I don't see the 'link to other worker' link. Do I need to enable this somewhere else?
167  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rack mount case? on: July 17, 2011, 05:56:28 AM
Rackmount cases normally cost more - they need more stable material than normal once.

I get one for 12 cards in hopefully a week. On 2 boards, behind each other. That is 12 dual slot cards that live on extension cables and are decently switched Smiley 5 units high, cost around 250 USD.

got a link? That sounds awesome!

he's having it custom made. btw, it's cheaper to just get two 4U cases for $50-80/ea than get a dual MB case for $250. Unless there's something I'm missing?
168  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rack mount case? on: July 16, 2011, 12:28:15 AM
I personally dont think this isefficient.

I am just getting drafts for my own custom case design that will:

* Carry 2 motherboards, 4 PSU, one behind the other.
* Be 5 Rack units high.
* Be totally optimized for airflow
* Carry 5 (!) cards per motherboards on extension cables.

The goal is a 40 double wide cards per rack design Wink

Setting up some mining operation at the moment - I order teh stuff half rack wise (40 cards) and I dont want to spend too much for rent.

That is quite an interesting case idea. Now, just how much does it weigh and what are you mounting it on - rails? tray? Pics!

170  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: July 15, 2011, 01:35:55 AM
i don't really see the point. investing thousands of $ into mining gear and investing some idle cpu cycles are 2 whole different things. nobody has invested in mining 1-2 years ago. nobody. they have used what was available.

Never PRESUME, because it makes PRES out of U and ME...

...or something like that

:O i've read the difficulty chart. i thought that's enough to assume nobody invested in mining.

I love how this thread just continues to be negative; ten whole pages of it. It's like you guys think that you can dissuade new miners from getting into the game by saying it's pointless and unprofitable and the sky is falling and we're all going to die if we buy more hardware.

personally I just dropped $5k on hardware in June and have another $1k in cards going live next week. If you understand anything about enterprise capacity planning, TCO-over-time analytics, or the like you can build rather efficient hardware. Then you rack and stack it, cool it, monitor it, and understand your electric usage. This is not rocket science but it's not a child's game either.

But hey, I'm all for keeping the difficulty low Cheesy
171  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rack mount case? on: July 15, 2011, 01:26:02 AM
Is it possible to use risers in the pci 1x slots in a 4u case? I've never seen a 4u case in person so I have no clue how big it is. I understand you can fit big cards and most cpu coolers, but is there enough space to mount cards on a riser somehow?

If you look at this picture of my 4U case you will see that it is not really possible to do so unless you managed to rig up some kind of card holder but even then you only have about an inch or so between the current(stock) level of the cards and the case lid.

If you go with single slot 5770 or 6870 cards you can do 4x density in a 4u case with a Sapphire PureBlack MB like the one here.
172  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rack mount case? on: July 14, 2011, 11:03:10 PM

Nar these where huge 120mm black things with no guards on (Back before H&S went mad...I mean come on who in the right mind puts their finger into a 5k fan).

$20 from Vibrant, tempted to grab a couple actually. Thanks for the link

I think I remember the fans you're talking about. I had a large Compaq DB cluster box (where two servers were combined with attached SCSI storage) that had big black metal fans inside.

I just picked up some more of these Deltas. 240cfm for only ~60dB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835213001
173  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Cheapest smallest computer bootable from linux USB? on: July 14, 2011, 10:58:33 PM
Look at the Nokia N900 series - it's ARM platform and runs Linux. Has 3G and wifi too. I had one for a while, worked well.
174  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: ATI FirePro 5700 stats? Anyone running this card? on: July 14, 2011, 10:31:49 PM
Unless you watercool, the strongest single slot card around is probably this one:
http://www.techpowerup.com/144481/PowerColor-Officially-Launches-First-HD-6850-Single-Slot-Graphics-Card.html

Given that the 6850 generally does 200-220 mhash the single slot 5770 is actually a better card since it's the same mhash for $100 less.
175  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / ATI FirePro 5700 stats? Anyone running this card? on: July 14, 2011, 08:44:32 PM
I have a new box that has 4 PCIe slots and I can't get dual slot or full length cards into this case. However I have access to ATI FirePro 5700 cards that are single slot wide, but I don't see them listed on the mining hardware comparison page. Does anyone know what these cards will do for mhash?
176  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rack mount case? on: July 14, 2011, 06:40:11 PM
Well if he has his rack in a basement or unused room there is no reason he couldn't slam a 5k rpm fan in the front and one in the back. I'd search on ebay for some of the metal fans the old HP servers used to use, those things never break down (had one running in a data centre for over 6 years solid, never been turned off).

You mean these?

what the hell kind of rig is that supposed to be?! it screams fire hazard and ridiculousness.

This is safer, follow my example.
178  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New Graphics Card on the market (6870x2) on: July 14, 2011, 06:27:57 PM
One 6870 = 280-300 mhash/s without water cooling @ 950-1000mhz cores

Usually you can get these for $180-220 or less if you know a good source. So... to have a dual density 6870 card for $100 over the price of two separate cards, well if you're really into paying for density per box maybe that's ok but I'd just go 6990 if I wanted density.
179  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rack mount case? on: July 14, 2011, 03:19:11 AM

I considered that case but the problem is the cooling sucks. Don't buy if you run more than one card. Cooling is KING!
180  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: July 14, 2011, 12:27:05 AM
What I find interesting is that there are so many variables at work here that determine profits (power costs, difficulty, current BitCoin value).  Obviously there must still be some, even after power costs, for those who already have the equipment, or continue buying it cuz they've wanted state-of-the-art equipment on their system since WAY before the BitCoin existed (e.g. gamers).  I happen to be one of those people who wants a great video card in my system so I have a good system, mining BitCoins is just a current, temporary bonus.  But one thing I've noticed: a lot of posts made in May stated how mining was profitable then, but won't be as difficulty increases.  But back then, a BitCoin was only worth 4 and a half bucks!  Obviously the price is volatile, unpredictable, and has some inherent risk, but what investment in life isn't?

People on the internet like to bitch and moan about all kinds of things. I'm sure that back in May life was different and thus required different amounts of bitching than the current state of available things of which to bitch about now. Life's a bitch, just mine coins and enjoy it. If it ends up being profitable, great! If not, you tried.

My word of advice, with my $5K invested in BTC mining, is that there are too many variables to do very accurate projections. You either go for it or don't. BTC is a gamble. It's better than going to a casino though Wink
