And in addition, BTCGUILD is down so a lot of users change to other pools.

Yea I'm pretty sure this is a big reason.  Lot of people want some stability after all the DDoS/lost mining time.

I mean, I know people who's tamagotchi is still alive.

lol for real?  Isn't that one of those monochrome keychain type mini-game where you keep raise some sort of virtual pet?  I remember my younger cousins having those ages ago.
163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Miners calling it quits? on: July 06, 2011, 12:07:36 AM
Pfft.  Quit.  There is no such quit.  I am mining on my i7 920, my 5850, my Gameboy Advance, my Terratec Aureon 7.1 (7.1 channels of hashing power!!11!) Universe and on my T-Mobile G1 smartphone.

Push it to the limit.

Fine here.
166  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GUI mining - Phoenix 1.5 and new, faster poclbm on: July 05, 2011, 03:20:22 PM
Not sure if this is the right place but I am running off what GUIMiner is giving me in the console.

Anyway, I was running on BTCGuild last night with failover setup to go to bitcoins.lc (since I knew BTCGuild was having some instability) and I wake up this morning to see my miner chugging away at 390Mhash.  Awesome, I thought, it's working.  Obviously, though, the BTCGuild site was in minimal mode explaining it was effectively shutdown due to DDoS so I figured failover properly switched over to bitcoins.lc.  So I went to check my activity at bitcoins.lc and was surprised to find it had -zero- activity.  So where the heck is my Mhash going to, with it neither contributing to one or the other?

Here is some excerpts from the console tab:

That appears to repeat itself in no real discernible order throughout the night. Here are the settings I used:

-v -w 256 -f 1 -a 2 --backup=login:password@http://bitcoins.lc:8080

Is there any reason why failover was not working under these conditions?

168  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: MtRed.com [280+ GHs, 0Fee, LP+, SSL, JSONapi, Auto & Demand Payments] on: July 04, 2011, 05:40:45 PM
so the downside to a small pool is blocks won't be found as often and you will earn less credits, but over the long term it should even out?

in 2days at MtRed i'm not making nearly as much as i did at btcguild

Generally speaking, it evens out over time.  But the variance hurts more if a bigger pool has a bad streak (in the short term).  It all comes down to the features of the pool and whether or not it addresses your needs.  And I for one, find MtRed is currently the best pool to suit my needs.
169  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Inconsistency with hashrate on: July 04, 2011, 05:36:26 PM
At the very least it seems it is more likely Phoenix-related.  Tends to be a lot more "stable" under poclbm though less maximum there.  I have monitored Afterburner (yea I leave it on 24/7) and it does not seem like there is any sort of GPU usage fluctuations and maintains steady at 99.

I am using an Intel platform (i7 920, ASUS Sabretooth X58).

Despite the issue, even with the stability with poclbm, I still gain greater shares and thus BTC per day with Phoenix, despite the issues.  With poclbm it tops out at about 391Mhash, whereas phoenix tops out at 406-408
170  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Another Sapphire 5850 fan failure :( How long to RMA? on: July 04, 2011, 04:38:00 PM
Seems like Sapphire fans have an issue or something.  It's the only brand I see people complaining about consistently.
171  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin amount limit on: July 04, 2011, 03:55:33 PM
Why do people complain about Bitcoin not being inflationary with the amount of inflationary currencies around the world? Almost all of them are inflationary. Its not like you dont have a choice...

Yea, seems people have been preprogrammed to want more of the same.  Spoon or the Fork.

Fork the spoon.

But inevitably, there is no spoon.  It's what you make of it.
172  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Worlds Most Economical Bitcoin Mining Contracts! on: July 03, 2011, 10:04:43 PM
It's a gamble alright but definitely not the smartest option that is available.  But I guess in the end, that's the world - people have options and this is one of them.  The only thing that is a bit of a fallacy is that he stated he accepts bitcoins for this service.  One would need to pay more bitcoins than they would receive.   There is no gamble in that but pure deception.
173  Other / Meta / Re: Split up General Discussion forum? on: July 03, 2011, 03:38:10 PM
doom+gloom = criticizing bitcoin = TROLL ALERT  Huh

If this is the case then no the forum shouldn't quarantine criticism.

You're right.  Criticism shouldn't be "quarantined" or banned.  But trolling should; i.e. doom+gloom+misinformation+unfound+slander, should be.

176  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Best [legal] place to get Win 7 (non-upgrade)? on: July 02, 2011, 06:43:49 AM
I've lost too much sleep trying to get Ubuntu to do what I want it to.  Maybe  when I have more time...

In the meantime, I'm sticking with Win 7 (say what you will).  Where's the cheapest place to get a full version of the OS (non-upgrade)?  I shelled out 100 clams at Best Buy, but seem to recall seeing better deals somewhere.  Thanks in advance.

Windows 7 Upgrade might work... technically speaking, you can upgrade the upgrade.  Just sayin.
177  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Inconsistency with hashrate on: July 02, 2011, 06:37:56 AM
Are you monitoring the clock speeds of your cards?

I had a weird thing happen with my 5850 a while ago when I was trying to apply settings in MSI Afterburner. When I would enter in a gpu clock amount, like 850, and press apply, it'd go up to that speed for a few seconds, then back down to the factory 725 speed.

Yea, I've been monitoring that and it's all good.  I disabled power play plus emptied the "profiles", so there is no auto-switching going on.  At any rate, I think it's just a personality trait; takes a couple of hours for my GPU to get up to speed, for whatever reason.
178  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Worlds Most Economical Bitcoin Mining Contracts! on: July 02, 2011, 06:32:49 AM
Obviously this is meant for people who may not be as savvy or simply do not have money worries but I am curious about one thing.  How does or will your business account for difficulty increases?  Because, in practice, your clients will get less "bang for their buck" as time goes on.
179  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mtgox hit $2.99 on: July 02, 2011, 04:18:14 AM
Not to be rude, but I am a network security specialist. I am well aware of what would be required in setting up a secure exchange both technically and legally.

Really depends.  CaVirtEx is in beta for quite some time; I guess it would have to depend on what you can offer compared to them

Reference, mcw60 block, stock plate w/80mm fan mounted in vrm location.
Crippled one already awaiting new smd capacitor for repair. Didn't have fan mounted on it. Considering piggy backing some capacitors for longevity.

That's a good idea, didn't really think about cooling the back side of the card to attack VRM heat.  I am using 2 120mm fans ziptied to my Twin Turbo over the stock plate; waiting on some thermal tape to come by so I can replace the flakey stock stuff.
