161  Other / Politics & Society / Syrian Refugees Greeted by Justin Trudeau in Canada on: December 12, 2015, 09:54:12 PM
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greeted a planeload of weary Syrian refugees landing in Toronto early Friday, telling the first to disembark that “you’re safe at home now” as he handed them winter coats.

“Tonight they step off the plane as refugees, but they walk out of this terminal as permanent residents of Canada,” Mr. Trudeau told government employees gathered at the airport.

“This is a wonderful night where we get to show not just a planeload of new Canadians what Canada is all about, but we get to show the world how to open our hearts and welcome people who are fleeing extraordinarily difficult straits,” the prime minister said.

The Canadian public’s widespread embrace of a plan to accept thousands of Syrians stands in stark contrast to the controversy over the issue in the United States, where many politicians have called for restrictions or outright bans on the refugees.

Opposition parties in Canada, including the recently defeated Conservatives, have quibbled over timing and details, but there is no significant opposition in the country to the overall aim of accepting at least 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February.

The first wave of 163 Syrians who arrived late Thursday night have been sponsored by individuals or groups who agreed to arrange their housing, education and other resettlement needs. Sponsors have had to raise just over 28,000 Canadian dollars, about $20,400, for each family.

Few parts of the country seem to be without some kind of sponsorship group. In the Muskoka district of Ontario, a popular vacation destination north of Toronto that re-elected a Conservative to Parliament in October, Jody White, a local resident, said that she was connected with other people considering sponsorship after she telephoned the Huntsville, Ontario, congregation of the United Church of Canada.

From a core of 16 people, Syrian Refugee Sponsors Huntsville now has about 300 volunteers. “Not in my wildest dreams did I think that would happen,” she said. “It was so positive.”

The group, which had factored bake sales into its fund-raising plans, also fulfilled its initial target almost immediately when Robert and Jacquie Nunn, who live in the adjacent community of Lake of Bays, donated 28,000 Canadian dollars.

These prominent Muslims only speaks out against those who only want to protect Americans. They should be the first to speak out against these terrorists and they themselves should do something against the terrorists.
163  Other / Politics & Society / Italy says international tax dodger amnesty is bringing in billions on: December 10, 2015, 03:43:10 AM
About €60bn in undeclared wealth disclosed – mostly hidden in Switzerland – with up to €4bn in tax and interest expected to be paid, says government

The Italian government said on Wednesday it was set to rake in at least €3.8bn euros (£2.75bn/US$4bn) after tax dodgers took advantage of an amnesty deal to declare money and assets hidden abroad.

The so-called voluntary disclosure programme, which was launched a year ago and ended on 30 November, brought to light nearly €60bn euros in undeclared wealth, the economy ministry said in a statement.

“The [resulting] tax revenues are estimated at around €3.8bn. With interest the final proceeds could easily reach around €4bn,” the statement said.

The Italian authorities received 130,000 voluntary declarations as a result of the scheme, amounting to a total of €59.5bn, it said.

Some 70% of that was hidden in Switzerland. To a lesser degree funds were also stashed in Monaco, the Bahamas, Singapore and Luxembourg, the ministry said.

“Unlike previous measures the taxpayer taking part in this scheme still has to pay the total tax and interest, it’s only the penalties that have been reduced,” the statement said.

The ministry hailed the voluntary cooperation scheme as a success, saying the “era of banking secrecy is over”.

“The relationship between the tax authorities and the taxpayers starts afresh with a renewed dialogue that will be based essentially on trust,” the ministry said.

The centre-left government in October approved a €27bn-€30bn budget designed to ensure a fledgling economic recovery takes wing in 2016 at the cost of slowing the reduction of the country’s massive €2.2tn debt.

167  Other / Politics & Society / German woman on trial for neo-Nazi murders breaks silence over attacks on: December 09, 2015, 05:47:30 PM
Beate Zschäpe tells Munich court she was not involved in attacks by the National Socialist Underground but she regretted failing to prevent them

A woman accused of being the only surviving member of a murderous German neo-Nazi cell that remained undetected for over a decade, has broken her silence for the first time telling a court she was not involved in the planning or carrying out of the attacks but that she regretted failing to prevent them.

Beate Zschäpe, who is on trial for 10 murders, two bomb attacks and several robberies, claimed she was unaware of the motive for the killings, which she insisted had been carried out by her two former lovers, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt.

In a statement read out by her lawyer, Zschäpe painted an image of herself as a victim and passive bystander, insisting she only found out about the killings after they had taken place.

She said she had not been able to muster the courage to turn her back on the men or to go to the police, because they had threatened to kill themselves if she did so. She also denied being part of the National Socialist Underground (NSU).

Families of the NSU’s victims – eight Turkish restaurateurs and shop-owners, a Greek man and a German police officer – listened intently as Zschäpe’s lawyer, Mathias Grasel, read out the 53-page statement over a period of 90 minutes.

The 40-year-old defendant looked on passively during the most dramatic day yet of her two-and-a-half-year trial, which is taking place in the same cramped court room – Room 101 of Munich’s central court – where the former Nazi extermination camp guard John Demjanjuk stood trial in 2011 and tennis champion Boris Becker was convicted of tax evasion in 2002.

Lawyers of the victims said ahead of the statement they hoped Zschäpe would throw some light on details as to how the victims were selected and how the NSU was led to their targets.

170  Other / Politics & Society / Syria Blames U.S. in Base Bombing, but Americans Blame Russia on: December 08, 2015, 07:10:56 PM
BEIRUT, Lebanon — Syria on Monday said a United States-led coalition had bombed a Syrian military base in the east of the country, killing three soldiers, wounding at least 13 and destroying vehicles and equipment. The United States denied the Syrian accusation and said a Russian warplane appeared to have been responsible.

The Syrian accusation, in a statement carried by the official news agency, was the first time that President Bashar al-Assad’s government had held the Americans responsible for bombing a Syrian military facility since the United States began airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria more than a year ago.

The statement said that the bombing had been conducted Sunday evening in Deir al-Zour Province, and that Syria had sent letters of protest to the United Nations calling it “a heinous aggression by the coalition.”

American military officials said the coalition had carried out airstrikes in the province on Sunday, but they said no Syrian military positions had been struck. The Americans seemed anxious to avoid an escalation of tensions with Mr. Assad’s government.

A statement from the United States-led Combined Joint Task Force said that the coalition had conducted four airstrikes on Sunday, “all against oil well heads,” about 35 miles from the base. “We did not strike any vehicles or personnel targets in this area,” the statement said. “We have no indication any Syrian soldiers were even near our strikes.”

A senior United States official later attributed any deaths and any damage to the Syrian base to what he called “a screw-up” by the Russians, who joined the Syria war in September as allies of Mr. Assad and have conducted airstrikes with Backfire bombers and other aerial armaments.

“We’ve got a radar track showing a Backfire bomber flying directly over the town that the Syrians named a few minutes before the first claims that we killed some Syrian troops,” the American official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational details.

Russian officials had no immediate comment on either the Syrian government’s accusations against the American-led coalition or the American response implicating the Russians. But Dmitri S. Peskov, the spokesman for President Vladimir V. Putin, reiterated what he called the need for a combined effort to vanquish extremist militants in Syria.

IS is a cancer on the world. Their ignorance is mind boggling. However, their plan to mint gold, silver and copper would be an economic catastrophe for the U.S. and the rest of the world. If, we started using precious metals as a currency the U.S. economy would collapse. The fed would become obsolete over night, which is not a bad thing. The prospect of using a currency that is actually worth it's value would bring a halt to the printing of worthless paper currency and our government could not print additional monies that would be worth anything. IS is the #$%$ of the earth but this idea is ingenious if they want to topple the world's financial centers. Osama bin Laden crippled the U.S. economy with three airplanes. on 9/11. That event would pale in comparison to the upheaval this would cause. Intriguing.

its true, terrorists want medical care to, just like normal people. and doctors without morals supply it. funny, think about it. they will pick and choose who gets the doctor and a perceived enemy will get a bullet before they see a doctor.

Why can't Turkey asked Russia for apology for its jet unintentionally crossed into Turkey's border with concrete proof and then apologizes for shooting down the jet and agrees to some kind of compensations for the jet and the killed pilot? Prolonging the conflict does not do anybody any good.

While it's absolutely appropriate for France to deliver some surgically targeted payback, I don't think the characterization that the attack was an "act of war" is good because you're dealing with individual cells rather than nation states.
