161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: August 08, 2013, 02:57:34 PM
Can we use the "my talk" page on a devtome article to leave comments about the entries?

Makes sense. Thank you.

Questions:

1. Can anyone tell me at what point traffic to an article is measured? I want to promote it, but want to wait until I'm pretty sure the peak is during the time when it counts.

2. Does the traffic count for all articles or just the newest submissions?

I'm plugging a few articles. User vehementchrome has just put up some very well written stories. I'm enjoying the reading and wanted to recommend them.

And no, that is not my alias. I receive nothing for advocating his pages. Just thought it would be enjoyable for others.

If you would like I can try and find some time to write something to grab the data from the api.   I do think the article idea is a good one,  I just think it is important to have the numbers in the right ballpark.

That would be a great help to the DVC community, I think. Are there are places where we can invest in DVC?

twobits, I apologize to you for being wrong. I apologize to FuzzyBear for my errors too.

twobits, I could care less if people see the edits.

twobits, I don't know if I would consider that an ad hominem attack. I merely introduced you to a dead horse. An ad hominem would be something like "twobits is such a dick. You can't trust a thing he says because he is a jerk." See? That's going after "the man" instead of the argument.

UPDATE

I'm still thinking of the nature of that accusation of an ad hominem attack. It's curious. I essentially said that twobits was beating a dead horse. To me, that is accusing him of arguing about a point that is no longer under contention. I had dismissed the argument. I tried to avoid saying that the essence of the argument was fallacious because of some inherent disposition of twobits to rationally carry on a conversation. I was saying the argument was going on without my participation. At least that was my intention.

Responding to tone. Yes, I responded to the antagonism of twobits' first post to me, but I also cited the "why" of that reasoning. An argument from tone is a weak form of argument, at least how I understand it, if not also accompanied by an explicit reason why the tone was offensive. There is nothing wrong with pointing out that someone's style is inflammatory.

The link I gave twobits to FuzzyBear's ASCM data was where it was pointed out to me that ASCM had more than one dividend payment. So when I said that FB was also wrong, it was an error of omission. Neither of us identified that amount in our attempts to find the correct data.

I responded to the charge that I neglected to include the ASCM data. Doing so was my error.

I also responded to the charge that I did not supply proof of my work. I posted the link to the Google Docs spreadsheet which included my numbers.

I'm sure twobits will respond, which is his right. But really, I'm only interested in carrying on the conversation with FuzzyBear and then probably only by PM. I felt like twobits jumped in, not with the intention of being helpful, but to stir up some sort of debate that I never fully wanted to engage in but for some reason felt obliged. That's a perception of mine, right or wrong. I also felt guilty about eating up thread room in a discussion where a good part of twobits posts didn't make a lot of sense. I guess that is a communication problem with text only discussions, but nevertheless, it was often hard to decipher.

Everyone please check that your earnings are in the list at:
https://raw.github.com/Unthinkingbit/charity/master/account_24.csv

The devtome earnings will be up for a day, in case someone did not get earnings because their invoice is badly formatted. If that is the case, I will run devtome.py again for only that person. Also, every new recipient should check that they received 11 devcoins, which were sent for a final confirmation of the devcoin address.

By Friday, June 14, the receiver files should be made. Round 24 payments will start at block 96,000, around July 1.

My address checks out fine. I have two receiver addresses. 148T26TsNqCLzkxuYzMSMxYvwySTZA7Sd5 and 1CfWWyDNUeioJc7TBnqDBDyQKJUYwT7S2Z.

What you have on file is fine.
169  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Aegis DevCoin on: June 13, 2013, 01:34:32 PM
ranlo, I am very impressed by the evenness of your response. I hold no grudge about questioning the integrity of my work. It's a good check.

Those three appendices at the end of my book *are* by others. I used them with the old-school idea that if an non-fiction book addresses an issue, it should make available some references which are nearly impossible for a broad readership to have access. At the time I wrote the book, those three pieces were nearly impossible to locate. I only found them because I had access to an extremely large research library during my first graduate program.

If any in this community feel that I should remove those appendices, I would happily do so, but I do feel that their removal would detract rather than enhance the content. I could even move them to their own collated sources if anyone wishes. If there is even one person who wants me to move it, I will do so.

Hey there! I'd like to report a user: http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=wiki:user:eeharris

He's posted a massive book under "collated" that he just copied and pasted from elsewhere. Not an article based on a book, he went looking for books that weren't copyrighted and then decided to use that to get 80 shares.

Hey there. Just went through his other articles. A lot of what's in them is copied from elsewhere (even his "original" ones). Case-in-point:

http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=when_prophecy_goes_rogue

Check out Appendix 3. This is copied from this page:

http://pjmiller.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/dispensationalism-today-yesterday-and-tomorrow-part-1/

You can find this by doing a simple search for "A person’s theological system is his basic understanding of what the overall teachings of Scripture are and how they interrelate."

Also, he often notes that things were taken from elsewhere.

His articles as a whole are completely suspect at this point.
[/quote]

For the sake of laying some minds at ease:

1. The "massive book" is not just copied from elsewhere. The Life of God in the Soul of Man is a revision and meets all the criteria for commercial publication as a new work, although not written by me. It is a revision. I do not claim the content is mine, but the work involved in preparing it involved a lot of time and comprehension of the material to prepare it for republication under my name as "Edited by Ethan E. Harris." I got the original images from archive.org (not the HTML or PDF) from the 1878 copy of the book. I wanted as accurate base material to work off of. I scanned them through Abbyy, which I paid for, and then at great length, went through formatting and updating text. I removed archaic terms and made quite a few improvements to an out of print book that is often sought by enthusiasts, myself being one of them. BUT, Instead of publishing it as a revision through CreateSpace or something like that, I decided to make the new version free for the community at large. I put a lot of work into it and the only profit I anticipate is DVC. I get quite a bit of royalties off my other work and didn't feel it was necessary to receive anything of this one. And I have been very up front about the source of my materials.

2. The second thing cited above is the 3rd appendix to my book on eschatology. I specifically cite the author and it's not pjmiller. Grover Gunn wrote that VERY short piece that I included with a citation saying that it was by Grover Gunn. I think it's rather deceptive of you to say I copied it from pjmiller's post. Even pjmilller does not quote the article at length, so if anything, pjmiller found the material just like I did and only used a few quotes. I used the article as an appendix, not claiming it as my own, but for readers who do not have access to the material. I wrote that book in 2002-2003 and at the time, Gunn's article was only available in journal articles. It's easy to find a sentence that is obviously quoted and then say "Ah! Plagiarism!" But I cite my sources and do not claim their work for mine. I am very conscious of this. pjmiller is not quoting from me and I am not copying from pjmiller. We are quoting something written by Grover Gunn and including it in our work to show people we are not plagiarizing by including that material. Wiki articles and academic treatises often include tons of references and in non-fiction, this helps identify the validity of the argument being put forward. How do you know that pjmiller didn't copy that little quote from me? Because he got it from Grover Gunn. Just like I did.

Hopefully, this will ease some tensions toward my work.

Edit: Reading back through user ranlo's complaint, I would like to note that my book has yet to be made available online. Only a few copies were given out about 10 years ago to some other authors in the field and one copy to my publisher. The content was too academic, they felt, so they passed over it. I own the copyright to the entire book and can distribute it at my discretion.

Yeah, it was fun to set up. But then the reward is so incredibly low and since no one really uses it, it's just for grits and shiggles.
173  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Solo mining SolidCoin - Tutorial on: May 09, 2013, 12:57:09 AM
Since I was working on another project, I made this to help anyone figure out a basic solo mining setup. Instead of having to search everywhere for the settings and how-to's, I tried to roll it all together.

Well, I mined over 10 blocks today. Sure, it only pays out .05 SC, but hey, there's hardly any competition. So I mined in peaceful contemplation while I power mined a neglected coin.  Grin

Any constructive comments about the flow or things I overlooked would be appreciated.
174  Economy / Service Discussion / Setting up Authentication at Cryptonit with Google Auth on: April 30, 2013, 03:49:03 PM
NOTE: Make sure you have good cell reception and the Google Authentication app ready to go! If you don't have good cell reception, download the desktop version of JAuth at https://github.com/mclamp/JAuth/tree/master/Installers (should be one for all OSs).

1. Go to the GA tab on your account page. Have your Google Auth app open on your phone.

2. Click Get Started.

3. Enter a new code from your phone app in the first line. I chose "counter" code. Submit.

4. On this next page, you should see a barcode. Using your Google Auth app, click on the "+" sign, then click "scan barcode". It should automatically create a new code on your Google Auth app with your Cryptonit username just below the new 6-digit code. But make sure you have the barcode scanned with your app and your phone shows "Cryptonit" under the 6-digit number. If not, just start over. You can get it wrong five times before being locked out for an hour. Get it right once and your good!

5. Check the box on Cryptonit and submit.

If it helped, tips are greatly appreciated at LTC LYpmskJiNUatXuugjpHZEfASM4RqU1cT5Z, but not required. Smiley

I've mined 614 shares since last night.

But I still don't see my token on the list.

Can you check?

UPDATE: If you can help me figure out what's going wrong, I can start mining again. Right now I'm supplying about 1/10th of the pool hash.
