1601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you, or would you ever use a Bitcoin ATM? on: June 25, 2023, 03:08:07 PM
I've seen Bitcoin ATMs only in videos from friends that are living in foreign countries, not in person but I would love to give it a try someday, I think the transaction fee will be the same just as when you are sending Bitcoin from your crypto wallet, unless there are some extra charges that I don't know about.

The Bitcoin transaction fee presently is looking good enough and you can get away with a cheaper feel depending on the time of operation because for example I sent Bitcoin to exchange yesterday using $0.80 and today it's $0.56 so you see that it's always lower and higher too.

It is unlikely that all countries will have Bitcoin ATMs as Bitcoin is not yet legalized globally, something that may never happen in the future, maybe we will have a Satoshi island or nation where Bitcoin is the sole currency someday, that will be good for tourism where crypto lovers and adopters will love to visit, how crazy is this?

Bitcoin ATMs are actually quite handy when traveling abroad.

You can get local fiat from your "international wallet" aka Bitcoin. It's a great solution for the time being while most countries still not have Bitcoin as legal tender.
1602  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Would you use a VPN on a casino, even if it is not allowed in their ToS? on: June 25, 2023, 03:05:59 PM
~snip~
regarding VPN, this is actually quite easy, but sometimes we are too serious to take this problem.

when we want to come to a casino site for the purpose of having fun, of course we will always avoid any risks that make us fail when we want to have fun, such as using a VPN which is risky when something goes wrong and finally the account will be frozen.
after all, there are still lots of casino sites that we can access according to what we want without having to use a VPN which is risky in the long run.
but it all returns to each gambler whether they want to take this risk.

Yeah, it's already so improbable to win big in a casino, why would people want to add more risk to their "investment"?

If you end up winning and you used a VPN, the casino can basically say that they won't pay you and they would be fine to say so. That would suck.
1603  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: People are giving too much importance to exchanges on: June 25, 2023, 03:04:27 PM
~snip~
This is why we should never plan to keep our coin on exchanges because this might make us lose some good amount of money if the exchange crash. The people that have big funds in FTX cannot still access there funds till today because of the mismanagement of funds if customers by the team. Exchanges are using our money to make themselves richer when we swap our coins and trade on the platform.

If many of these exchanges crash, many investors are going to lose there money because many people are not still ready to remove there funds from exchanges or reduce the amount of money they have there maybe in case they want to swap or trade on the platform. Bitcoin will always fall and rise so we need to be ready for anything the market want to do.

Yes, you should always keep your bitcoin in your own wallet.

Exchanges should be used only to exchange bitcoin, as the name implies. There's nothing good about storing your bitcoin at their wallets. Ideally you should setup an automatic transfer after a threshold is reached, and always keep your money off exchanges.
1604  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: June 25, 2023, 03:00:57 PM
~snip~
I absolutely agree with you. Martingale strategy is one of the best strategies to confuse the gambler and convince him that he can use it to beat the casino.

In fact, none of the strategies in the long term will not work in favor of the gambler, because mathematically the casino will always have an advantage, so learn to gamble for fun, not to win.

Yeah, it's just part of the whole fantasy that some gamblers like to live in. They think that by using some models they can outsmart the casino, when in reality the casino is just laughing all the way to the bank with their money.

Gambling is not a way to make money, it's just entertainment. The only people making money are the casinos.
1605  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is next for Bitcoin? Seems like the only winners are early adopters unless on: June 22, 2023, 04:29:48 AM
You have millions to buy ? I so missed out on this when it was $110 a coin but I was young and no money. So now that blackrock made some noise in the Bitcoin space and got everyone rallied up will this be the biggest money grab in history to then crash it on the recession?

How can i understand Bitcoin more ? I mean it has no use for it yet, it is not producing profits for companies ?

I want to invest good capital but dont understand why I would do this on something made out of thin air. Sometimes seems like its a lot of fanboys just wanting it to go up and up so they can then sell to retail

Bitcoin is definitely not created out of thin air, every coin is basically created by doing work, aka Proof-of-work. You can't just simply generate a bitcoin out of thin air (which you can do with fiat by the way)

You can understand more about Bitcoin by reading the whitepaper:

https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

It's a short read and explains the main concepts nicely.
1606  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA World Cup 2026 :Canada/Mexico/United States: Discussion Thread on: June 22, 2023, 04:24:40 AM

United States will be hosting about 80% of the matches so this argument of three countries hosting the world cup is not entirely true. And regarding the number of teams, it was long due. With the current format, the UEFA teams are over-represented in the FIFA World Cup. During the 1990s, it was justifiable, because back then the Asian and African teams were unable to compete against the UEFA teams. But now the situation has changed completely. AFC and CAF teams are giving good fight to the UEFA and CONMEBOL teams and this was very evident during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

They are the teams that have won the most number of competitions, ever. A close second is CONMEBOL, and then it's a long way to the third place and the rest.

These are the best teams, and in my mind they should be more of those countries in the tournament.

Just adding more countries with lower skill level will drop the quality.

We saw that with Qatar. It was the only team way below the quality of the tournament. The games they played were not as entertaining as the others. If we continue to add other countries that have that level of skills the whole tournament will lower it's quality.
1607  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: People are giving too much importance to exchanges on: June 22, 2023, 04:18:45 AM
If you are not interested in the exchange, you should not create this topic you should continue to hold your bitcoins. Everyone has the right to choose, you can't force everyone to follow your opinion.  i'm not a fan of centralized exchanges, but I don't hate them either, but to be fair, they're not as bad as you say.  they really have many utilities and benefits for us, I think without them, the crypto industry wouldn't be as strong as it is today.

Yeah, exchanges are important to help with the transition from fiat to Bitcoin.

As long as people keep getting paid in fiat for their goods and services, there will be a need for having exchanges.

The moment people realize they can skip that middleman by getting paid in Bitcoin directly, then everything would be better and exchanges won't be needed. It's a temporary solution.
1608  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you lend your cryptocurrencies? on: June 22, 2023, 04:17:03 AM
Lending to me is more reasonable to do with fiat.

I personally wouldn't lend any Bitcoin at all, even if the interest that some companies are showing might be tempting to some. The risk of losing it all is just too much. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

With fiat they can simply print more anyway, but Bitcoin is irreplaceable.

What do you understand as charisma? Wink

Ronaldo hasn't been charismatic. Zidane has been charismatic (except for his head kick against Italy). They can also be polarizing and still contribute to the spectacle.

But in reverse a player that is burdened with high expectations can also create a lot of disappointment. What would people have said if Messi didn't win the World Cup? He would be called a loser, incomplete star. There are very fine lines when it comes to how people treat the players.

Yeah, but even if Messi wouldn't have won, there would still be news about him all the time, explaining why he didn't win, etc. Basically at that level it doesn't matter what happens, people will talk about the person no matter what.

The opposite is actually ignoring the player. There are many great players that simply are not discussed in the media, and not because they are not great, simply because they are probably not the absolute best, or maybe they are more private, etc.

Higuita was one of the few players that understood that this is not only a sport but also a spectacle that people watch, and if the players do not make it exciting then people will find other things to do with their time, some may argue that his antics risked scores against his team, but the fans loved him precisely because he was willing to take some crazy risks just for them to be entertained, unfortunately there are not many players like him anymore on the world of soccer these days.

Yeah, it is an spectacle basically.

The players that are most entertaining are usually the ones that are most respected and loved by the people, even if their skills are not that great.

The same is true in reverse. It doesn't matter if a player skill is incredible if there's not charisma from the player. People won't like that player as much.
1611  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Will there ever be any safe centralised exchange ? on: June 21, 2023, 03:13:02 AM
~snip~
Of course. Without KYC, I fail to see how centralized exchanges would be able to survive in the long run. Governments will just close their operations for good. With decentralized exchanges, that's another story. There's really no such thing as an exchange (either centralized or decentralized) that's 100% safe and secure. You'd need to protect your crypto by following the necessary security precautions.

Flaws/vulnerabilities will always exist, but if you properly secure your crypto, it'll be almost impossible for malicious actors to rob you. With the FTX collapse, it's likely centralized exchanges will cede control of private keys and/or seeds to customers in the near future. Who knows if this will make CEXs bigger and stronger than ever? Just my thoughts Grin

The thing is that exchanges will be needed as long as people keep getting paid in fiat for their goods and services.

But yeah, centralized exchanges might be stopped by the government when they start putting out the CBDCs.
1612  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Would you use a VPN on a casino, even if it is not allowed in their ToS? on: June 21, 2023, 02:04:15 AM

If the casino is legit then there is no chance that they will freeze the withdrawals. However, if a casino is doing shady business then the probability of taking such action is 100%, because they will put the blame on the gambler by saying that he/she used a VPN to deposit his/her funds and gambled using that VPN. After that those shady casinos can easily change their T&C without notifying the gamblers. That's the way of those scammers and they will do it even if the users wasn't using any VPN connection. Many of the private VPN connections won't allow the casinos to know that the gambler is using a VPN and they consider the connection as a guanine citizen of the country whose IP was used to connect to the casino.

I don't think that anything is wrong when we use VPN for gambling, and if they don't allow VPN's then something is wrong with them. They might have some strict restrictions and regulations that could make them now allow the use of a VPN connection other than that I don't think they ever need to block or ban VPN connections.

Actually I think the most legit casinos will be the ones enforcing the VPN ban, because there are laws and regulations in different countries that they have to follow.

So, by not being able to determine the origin of the connection of the gambler when a VPN is used, then they cannot provide the service basically.
1613  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Can i make 100 $ daily from online casinos on: June 21, 2023, 01:47:00 AM
~snip~
To get $100 every day a minimum deposit of $500 or more is required. You cannot bet $200 and get $100, it is not that simple. The bigger the budget the higer are the chances. Above all you need a strategy everytime you are in the online casino. Without any strategy the chance of win is basically null. A lot of patience and discipline is needed in your lifestyle. Professional gamblers do make money, the sacrifice they do to get that amount is not possible for everyone.

How does that work?, the more money you bet the higher the chances?, what if you bet a million?, you'll win guaranteed?

Of course you get paid more if you bet more, but how are the chances of winning higher when you bet more?
1614  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Are Bitcoin LN POS terminals the future of bitcoin payments? on: June 20, 2023, 04:09:14 AM
They are actually the present in some parts of the world, like Germany.

Here you can see a Bitcoin LN POS terminal with a built-in thermal printer for the receipt, basically the same as fiat POS terminals.

As others have mentioned, the Bolt Cards are great for this. You don't need to have an account with the company, you can just buy them and they ship worldwide: https://www.coincorner.com/TheBoltCard

And you can setup your own Bolt Card Server since it's open source: https://github.com/boltcard/boltcard

Once you have the card (or similar device) and you setup your own server, you are ready to tap with lightning anywhere they have a compatible POS such as BTCPayServer, which supports NFC payments.

I wrote about this in the forum a while back: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5411251
1615  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: People are giving too much importance to exchanges on: June 20, 2023, 03:37:06 AM
6 months ago, my savings went down because of the FTX debacle. I've never used FTX, I've never been a customer of this company, but my savings are in BTC, and because of that failure, BTC's value went down, and so went my savings.

Today, bis repetita. I've never used Binance. I've never been a customer of this company, but because the SEC sues Binance, BTC is down, and so are my savings, so I have a message to all bitcoiners out there.

Exchanges and BTC are 2 different things. One exchange going down doesn't mean BTC must follow.
Binance will disappear? I don't give a damn.

The thing is that while people keep being paid in fiat for their goods and services, then exchanges are very important for Bitcoin.

When people transition to getting paid in Bitcoin directly, then exchanges will fade away because there would be no real need for them.

The reality is that many people are just "betting" on Bitcoin, so they want to maximize their fiat by "buying low and selling high". That's not going to affect Bitcoin in the long term, it just creates noise in the short term.

Every time when I read about these comparisons, it is usually about the offensive players and I can understand that as it often is the most impressive position when you see them scoring or dribbling, but Brazil also had some amazing defensive players. Recently, they didn't have a very consistent defense line and also no combining elements between the defense and the offense. They often play as separate parts while they usually were known for controlling the game from the keeper to the striker with all the quality they have. It is still three years until the next World Cup, but it is not enough time to build an entire new team until then. But changes need to be done if their goal is to compete for the World Cup title.

Sometimes we as the fans are maybe too critical with the teams as well because we were used to some nations dominating soccer and now it becomes more even and smaller nations can compete on a higher level. Croatia is one of those teams that with a small population can beat the best teams anyway. losing against Croatia is not a shame and Brazil wasn't worse in the quarter final. But there is a certain absolutism when teams are judged for their performance. If a team like Brazil doesn't win the title, a lot of people tend to say that it is not the old and strong Brazil. But there are so many teams that could potentially win a tournament and many games end with close results or even with penalties. Croatia had to survive the round of 16 and the quarter final with penalties and now again against Spain in a different competition. The difference in quality and strength between the teams has become more narrow.

Your comment reminded me of Rene Higuita, the goal keeper from Colombia, who was famous for doing acrobatic saves, the most common one called The Scorpion:

I don't think we see much of these crazy things these days.

You're right, if their own rules go against using such then why not comply than going against their rules, and once they detected that's all, the user account will be freeze, i noticed that's why some gambling platforms go against such was just because they don't want to create a vulnerability avenue for the attackers to hack their system and cheat on them, any suspicious move in such manners will be restricted and blocked by their system ones detected.

And going even further, casinos might be motivated to let you play with your money using a VPN, but the moment you want to withdraw money from them, they would make sure to double and triple check that VPN, and refuse to give you the funds.

So, personally, I wouldn't use a VPN in a casino at all, since there's no real reason to trust that I would get any money back from it, and they would be in their right to do so.

Also, considering the seemingly tight ties Trump has proven to have with Arabian and Russians it is a bit weird that Jack Smith did not reply affirmatively when asked if he wanted Trump's passport removed and the imposition of some travel restrictions abroad. If the defendant as not a leading candidate the story would be very different, I think.

Perhaps, Smith knows that everything he says will be used to fuel the narrative of presidential interference so he is rather trying not to give ammo to Fox news and Newsmax.

Still, I am sure that if Trump fled the country near the date of his judgement, the democrat party would be happier with that outcome.

I'm not sure about this, but isn't that normal procedure to stop someone in the position that Trump currently is from fleeing the country?

Independent of who the person is, I think once the process starts they cannot leave the country legally. Or maybe there are some technicalities around this.

Just imagine how we need to change the system of health care and society so that we can identify psychological problems at an early stage, because most people will never admit that they have any problems on a psychological level, although very many people have such problems to a greater or lesser extent.

In my opinion in order to do that we would have to introduce stricter control over each of us, and no one would like that, so society will never get rid of inadequate behavior of a certain percentage of people. We'll just have to accept it and be more attentive to our children and loved ones to protect our families from it.

I think having free (paid by taxes on gambling for example) access to mental health would definitely help many people, and definitely save some lives.

Having the service there available for anyone, for free, is something that could actually help people in need.

But there's not much talk about mental health, specially in gambling. I guess it's just there to make money, and no one really cares about the people losing their minds alongside their money.

We can win some money but still can't beat the amount of money that the casino will get. We can imagine if 100 gamblers lose in a day and they use a lot of money to gamble. We can see how much money the casino will get.

Meanwhile, we don't have a great chance to always win at gambling. So instead of taking the risk of losing a lot, we should reduce the amount of money and the length of time we gamble, and we also have to know when to stop to prevent big losses.

You don't even need to consider the other gamblers. If you only consider a single gambler in his or her entire life, you'll see that the amount they bet is more than the amount they won. Pretty much in every single case.

There are a few outliers though, but extremely rare, and more common in the past when the odds where not as bad for the gambler as they are today.
