What decided the price at which that trade was executed?

now THAT is brutal, in the sense of unpredictable.
16342  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica: How it works on: January 06, 2012, 03:28:05 PM
seems a little odd to me we haven't heard from Zhou for a while.  has anyone been able to remove USD's from Bitcoinica recently?  is trading proceeding normally?

I'm in my hometown right now.

Withdrawals: Apparently we have hit Mt. Gox's monthly withdrawal limit. Bitcoinica users have to wait for a few days for this limit to be refilled.

Trading: No redflag event longer than 5 seconds has been recorded in the last 48 hours.

so its defined by month.  can u tell us what the parameters of these limits are. i think that would help everyone.

i find it very odd that we haven't heard from Zhou for a coupla days now.  and thats despite alot of negative talk besides mine flying around.  normally he is out defending vigorously any and all comments that even hint of problems.  is he hunkering down for something we're not aware about?  this unidirectional move may be causing problems.

Yep, this.  Hopefully we'll hear from him soon.

Another problem with Bitcoinica is the constant limit Gox puts on them for coupons in USD.  It's only a slight annoyance -- if I want to withdraw money from my Bitcoinica account and put it in Gox, I can exchange it for BTC on Bitcoinica and THEN Bitcoinica will issue me a Gox code for BTC with no problem.  It's just kind of a hassle, and kind of curious.

but the BitPay guy was complaining that when he did this he had to pay a 5% premium above what he would have if he could used mtgox w/o the limit.

That's (partly) why it's an annoying hassle -- Bitcoinica has some gouging exchange rates.

5% is huge.  you'd be happy making that in a year for a traditional investment.  just b/c you made it and more in a few days doesn't mean you should give it away to Zhou.

why don't you center the last price in the middle of the chart at the bottom?

No, no no, it's fine where it is!  There's nothing in the way of it there.  It could stand to be a larger size font though IMO

when its not centered, you don't get a good symmetric idea of the relative size of the bid and ask mountains as they fan out from  the price.

here's a tip:  list the daily % change in price from the previous day.  no other charting service has the decency to do this.  this is a basic data point that EVERYONE will want to see.  especially when we're getting huge gains right now.
16348  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is no Tulip on: January 06, 2012, 02:21:01 AM
YEAH F*%#% ALL THE TROLLS WHO DON'T GET BTC! WE ARE GOING TO $100 BABY!  Kiss

Hm Crypt_Current are you sure net value must stay above 2 x maintenance? Why x2?

If you're using 5x leverage, yes.  it can drop further if you use less leverage.
Why is I don't know; that's just the rules that Zhoutong programmed into his awesome algorithm.

BTW, also if you look at the "Settings" page in Bitcoinica, where you select your leverage, it will show you max tolerated loss as a percentage for each leverage.

... aaaaaaaaand after doing some further calculations, 16% (max tolerated loss for 5x margin) works out to be far less loss than would occur to bring net value down to 2x maintenance.  In my case, anyway... but I am using a margin of BTC and USD.  Maybe there's something I'm not taking into account.
All I know for sure, is that before the other leverage options were added, 5x was the only option, and the rule was forced liquidation when net value falls below 2x maintenance.  Maybe Zhoutong can address this; tell us if anything has changed since the new leverage options were added.

Hm still doesn't make sense to me. I redid my calculation assuming net profit must stay above 1x maintenance and it says proudhon gets liquidated at a move below $5.24824.

Wanna bet for 1 BTC? If we're both wrong, both could pay 0.5 BTC to the bitcoin faucet.

Nah, I don't wanna bet, because I think you're right.  :-D  I think I was just used to the old rules and the new rules for loss tolerance are more strict.
No wonder that spike down last week forced a liquidation of my position at the time... 16% loss is apparently less than netv-2xMaint.  Ah well, live & learn.  :-D

Well it also depends on if your account is funded with usd or btc. If you have only btc and are long, a dropping price will screw you much faster.

this is what i meant when i said its like a mini derivatives tower.

ok, which chart is keeping up with the action better; mtgoxlive or btccharts?

btccharts is great right now... you need to be watching it right now man

i am.  i usually keep both up but they seem to alternate which is responding to gox faster.

Look at you two in the black already! Good timing.  Cheesy

whether he admits it or not, Proudhon was born to be long.

He was long back in April... he's simply coming back to the good side.

Proudhon, welcome back.

the shorts are probably screaming in terror once they heard Proudhon was leveraging up.

LOL, the market is climbing just b/c of Proudhon.  how ironic; after all his trolling, if he ends up owning an island next to the rest of us.
16360  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mad Speculator now live on bitcoinica on: January 05, 2012, 10:42:14 PM
gaud, what i'd pay to see Proudhon get excited... Wink
