16561  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 2.9.3 importing private key on: October 21, 2017, 04:40:25 AM
in order to "import" your private keys in Electrum (not sweep, that is different), you need to create a new wallet without a seed.
from file choose New/Restore and then after giving it a new name select Standard Wallet, Next, Use Public or Private key, Next, and now paste your private key here.
after creating this wallet you can always come back to this and just import new ones in here using the wallet option from menu.
16562  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin can hit 7000$ before end of this year on: October 21, 2017, 04:32:04 AM
these days bitcoin is acting crazy! the rises are mostly unexpected but the demand keeps coming. it was last month or the month before people were saying $4000 or $3000 and so on are too expensive and now they are paying $6000+ to buy 1 bitcoin.

however, lets not forget that this rise may be because of BTG hype and after the release price may come down a little. and also we have the Segwit2x thing afterwards which can cause some panic and more drop.
16563  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [ANN] Bittrex - Next generation exchange (btc/ltc/eac/ppc/rdd/ftc/and more) on: October 21, 2017, 04:02:00 AM
I want my money back

i have been a bittrex user for years now and since my account was old the account type was "Legacy" and my limit has always been high. (recently changed to 1337BTC). everything was fine and i continued using bittrex without any issue.

now out of the blue my account type is changed to lowest possible account! and i am not willing to give bittrex any documentation.
i would like to take my money out and use another exchange but it is stuck too!

sent a ticket too.

(this is a big scam by bittrex in my opinion, they are harvesting bitcoin users identification by forcing this new rule upon them)

The biggest issue I have with this, my legacy account displayed withdrawals up to 1337.
It displays this before you deposit, during your deposit, until you want to cash out...such a nasty move, holding people's money hostage in exchange for all their private personal information.

First off, I'm a big fan of Bittrex... and they are #1 in US alt volume for good reasons.

The 1337 number is meaningless...
It really means you have a "legacy" unverified account and can withdraw 1 BTC/day.

I'm still able to trade normally and withdraw 1 BTC/day...
But I have seen other activity at Bittrex that makes me very nervous  Shocked

meaningless or not, my account (from 2014) is no longer "legacy" and it is now a "new" account. and i never received any warning telling me i need to do anything in the past 3 years that i have been using bittrex!

... and now my money is stuck in their pocket and i can not get it out!
16564  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / There has been 667 forks from bitcoin (altcoins), 3 this month on: October 20, 2017, 04:56:06 AM
i just found a very interesting website (http://mapofcoins.com/) which has interesting information about forks from different cryptocurrencies.
the bitcoin fork map (http://mapofcoins.com/bitcoin) specially took my attention.

according to this site there has been 667 forks in total, 3 of which belong to this month alone.

you can click on the names of these coins and see the code and their website. a lot of them didn't even bother making more than 20 commits in years! or even change anything meaningful when they fork!
16565  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin really getting KILLED by FORKS? on: October 20, 2017, 04:47:10 AM
1. Bitcoin Gold fork is very badly prepared and (was referred as) is a joke. Information about the fork is lacking. no replay protection.
they say they have replay protection and on their website it has a check mark but they really don't. there is also an open issue for it but i don't see anything indicating them implementing it!
https://github.com/BTCGPU/BTCGPU/issues/18

this is not the reason for being a joke though. replay protection can be implemented easily like BTH did. fast and clean. the reason for being a joke is the 16000 premine blocks!

Quote
2. Segwit 2x fork has no replay protection, which will cause double spending to a certain degree. This fundamentally challenges Bitcoin's principles....which is to prevent double spending utilizing Blockchain technology.
same here. implementing it is going to be easy, their view is that because they believe nobody will support the 1 MB chain anymore they don't need replay protection.
i say we have to wait and see what the real support is when the time comes. now it is all guesses. maybe by that time nobody supported the 2 MB blocks!

and replay attack is not double spending. it means if you spend coins on one chain, the same coins on another will be spent too.

Quote
3. possible Bitcoin Unlimited fork (sorry I have yet to read more about it) may cause chaos to the Bitcoin network and there may be many versions of the bitcoin blockchain....
didn't BU guys get merged with BCH guys?

in any case, the decentralized bitcoin has proven that they do not want the increase block size proposal of bitcoin unlimited. so if they go ahead with their fork it will be another BCH, not a "chaos"

Quote
Due to the above reasons, are the fundamentals of Bitcoin indeed challenged by the upcoming forks?
Many people have said that "Oh, we have survived the Bitcoin Cash fork, it will be the same this time, just HODL"
but it may seem that this time the value of Bitcoin could be really challenged?
price temporarily changing is just market reaction to a news. it can be "fork panic" or it can be "China panic" or it can be "bitfinex hack panic" or it can be "SEC denied ETF" or ..... it doesn't really matter.

as for "fundamental of bitcoin", as long as we stick to consensus and fork using that, meaning all the network agreeing to a change, any forks like BU, BCH, BTG, BXX will be altcoins like the previous 667 forks of bitcoin.
16566  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: EDIT: 2 BTC [btc] Reward on: October 20, 2017, 04:21:13 AM
That looks more like AES256 encrypted text... looks nothing like a "seed"... or is that the output from the extract script that comes with btcrecover? Huh

Electrum uses AES-256-CBC for encrypting the wallet file. this includes private keys and seed.
http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/faq.html#how-is-the-wallet-encrypted

So far I've received a range of posts from payment upfront, give me the full file, to contacting Dave.

you don't need to do any of these.
you already given what you claim to be your encrypted seed.
but you need to explain about your password. how long it is, what characters it contains, does it have lower case and/or uppercase letters, does it have symbols, is there any meaningful words in it or are they random chars,....
answering these narrows the search and makes brute force possible. without knowing any of it your password may be :
  • 123
  • sage55123
  • myPa$sW@rdIsStr0ng
  • 3Df9F8&jme#o3nKp_
it is a fools task to even begin to break the last one for example!
16567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is this a safe practice? on: October 20, 2017, 04:10:30 AM
~ we admit that every computer that's connected to the internet is compromised,~
~ add the wallet.dat file when I need to transact. ~

i think you answered your own question here.
if we assume your computer is already compromised that means as soon as you "add" the wallet.dat file it will be stolen. you are just taking additional unnecessary steps!

things like hardware wallet (Trezor for instance) don't let anything leak to the outside world. they just sign your transactions for you.

if you are ok with taking additional tiring steps then do this:
- use your online full node to make an unsigned raw transaction
- disconnect internet and boot into a live linux from a DVD
- run your wallet client
- sign that transaction of step 1 with your private keys.
- shut down
- back to online OS, broadcast the now signed transaction.

some helps:

16568  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2 Days back i sold 17 BTC for 4968 $ on bittrex - i regret on: October 20, 2017, 03:59:40 AM
ever since you say you sold your bitcoins too fast, market have smiled upon you multiple times. i can see at least 3 opportunities that you could have bought back what you sold and still make a good profit.

once after the first rise, which was a very obvious drop and price went down to $5380
another time 5 days ago when price went down to $5415 for a correction and because of some uncertainty
the last time is the obvious big dip of 2 days ago down to $5101.

and we are back to nearly $5700 once again.
so did you buy back or are you still waiting for a gigantic drop to buy back?
16569  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Offline computer with paper wallet on: October 20, 2017, 03:52:37 AM
Is it enough to have a clean computer that is deconnected for the time I create the paper wallet or do I need a computer that has never been online?

when you disconnect a computer from the internet it doesn't make it clean. it just cuts the communication for as long as it remains disconnected. you may already have all kinds of malware on your computer! and they are not just keyloggers to steal your things, they may be a malware that alters the private key you generate.

to create a safe cold storage you need a "clean" computer and that is something that has never been connected or will be connected to the internet.
if you don't have an spare PC for that, just use a Live linux! download Ubuntu (it is the easiest) and burn the ISO on a DVD and boot up and create your paper wallet with your router off or disconnected.
16570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it worth moving 1/2 a Bitcoin for the hard-fork? on: October 20, 2017, 03:46:18 AM
The fees on moving a half a bitcoin with Exodus would be a few dollars I think.
then stop using "Exodus" as your bitcoin wallet! i have never heard or used it so i am not sure what you mean by a few dollars but for months bitcoin fees have been very cheap. i have never paid anything more than 10 satoshi per byte which is less than 15 cents. i use Electrum by the way.

Quote
Would having 1/2 a coin be worth moving my funds to a supporting wallet?
there is no "supporting wallet" yet except their fork of bitcoin core which is a full node and it is not yet complete. it needs more work before you want to move anything.
and by the way any wallet that you control the private keys will work when you want to claim your BTG tokens.

to be worth it you have to speculate about its price and that is impossible in my opinion. it can be $50 or it can be $1000!
16571  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who do you think will compete with Bitcoin? on: October 20, 2017, 03:42:08 AM
every time ethereum price is dropping i see people create new accounts on bitcointalk and start saying it is a good investment and can compete with bitcoin, blah blah! i see 4 brand new accounts answering the same as fast as OP's fingers allowed him to Wink

guys instead of bag holding, dump that shit when it was on top of the bubble and buy back before its next pump starts. these desperate attempts to "advertise" it. it won't change a thing.

p.s. ETH is not a currency to even begin to compete with bitcoin!
16572  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cloud Mining? Any Suggestion. on: October 20, 2017, 03:34:02 AM
none of them are good so you better look for something else or just buy bitcoin itself and hold it for profit.

if you go for cloud mining you either will find a Ponzi scheme that takes your money and runs or you find something like genesis mining that will take ages before you even reach ROI let alone make any decent profit.
16573  Economy / Speculation / Re: Which will be the real Bitcoin after november? on: October 19, 2017, 04:50:37 AM
There is nothing to think about, because after November nothing is gonna happen, just bitcoin gold gets added to the list of altcoins same as that bitcoin cash got added. This doesn't gonna make bitcoin core down and take the lead. Past two days bitcoin cash have been growing and today the growth has started to decline.

you are confusing 2 different forks!
- bitcoin gold: which is in 6 days (October 25) and it is clearly an altcoin. it even has a different PoW algorithm (Equihash). it is an attempt to make bitcoin GPU mineable!
this fork won't change anything

- SegWit2x hard fork part which falls in November (block height 494,784).
it is the second part of NYA agreement which activated SegWit and now wants to proceed with increasing block size to 2 MB from 1 MB.
this can cause issues since core developers are against it. but a large group of miners and businesses support it, and that creates a split in community.
16574  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin + Bitcoin Cash.... on: October 19, 2017, 04:36:41 AM
Bitcoin cash will be used for small transactions.... coffee, smokes, dinner etc

why?

please use your brain before writing something like this. why would anyone use Bitcoin Cash for small transactions when there are so many other altcoins with much better features, so much lower fee, faster transactions and lots more! even Dogecoin would be better than BCH for that matter!

yes i prefer to use dogecoin which have lower fee and faster transactions like you said. the other option maybe we can use digibyte and this coins its like dogecoin too. there are too many altcoin which will be good option than bitcoin cash.

Doge was just an extreme example though. there are lots of better altcoins out there with better technology and better features. i like ByteBall for example. it is fast, easy to use, low fee, uses DAG and it also has anonymous transactions with the blackbytes!
or if you want something like bitcoin the choice is ALWAYS litecoin (LTC)! it is faster, cheaper and it also has SegWit, LN, and will soon have confidential transactions (which is anonymous transactions).

16576  Economy / Speculation / Re: Which will be the real Bitcoin after november? on: October 19, 2017, 04:02:49 AM
The market wants Core. Today the futures market moved Segwit2x UP to 15% of the value of the original chain: https://www.bitfinex.com/order_book/bt2btc

For completeness, you can see the non-2x fork is getting the other 85%: https://www.bitfinex.com/order_book/bt1btc

this is utter bullshit! and bitfinex does this kind of stuff all the time. they still had a BTU (bitcoin unlimited) market last time i checked. how can you even sell something that doesn't still exist?!! which means the price is 100% virtual and meaningless. the only purpose of these markets is so that bitfinex can make money from the additional volume it gets (trading fees) and be the first to have that coin listed in case there were such coins.

~investing in South African Crypto Currencies.

what do you mean by this?

if it is a country issued coin, that makes it centralized and nobody wants to go near these types of altcoins. and they have not been of any significance so far despite other countries working on their version too. any coin that is created this way is also just limiting itself to one country, whereas a cryptocurrency needs to be global at the very least.
16579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for best way to store bitcoin wallet long term on: October 19, 2017, 03:29:59 AM
As the title says, I'm looking for best (safest) way to store my bitcoin wallet for 10+ years. After doing some reading it seems like either a hardware wallet or a paper wallet is the best way to go.
almost all the cold storage methods can be the safest as long as you create them correctly and also make proper backups from them.

Quote
One concern I have with the hardware wallet like ledger nano or trezor is what happens if the hardware wallet fails in 10 years and the company that makes the hardware is out of business? Would I still be able to recover my wallet?
this is a valid concern and it always exists with anything that is "hardware" they can fail.
and i believe they can be susceptible to data loss in long term if not connected to a power source.

but you can make a back up from them to be able to recover in case of any kind of failure.

Quote
Would I be better off just creating a paper wallet on https://bitcoinpaperwallet.com/ and storing a couple copies of it in secure locations, i.e. fire proof safe at my house and a copy at a family members house?
the same issues will be present for paper wallets (and i suggest bitaddress.org by the way). that is taking backups and storing them safely.
paper wallet is a good choice in my opinion when you don't want to touch your coins for 10 years. you can take a look at CryptoSteel: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=977486.0 to either buy that or just get an idea of what you can make yourself Wink
16580  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Bitcoin wallet that supports the hardfork? on: October 19, 2017, 03:20:59 AM
bitcoin wallets are bitcoin wallets which means they do not support any fork that is creating an altcion such as bitcoin gold and bitcoin cash. you will have to download that forked altcoin's official wallet in order to be able to use that forked coin.

as for which wallet to keep your bitcoins now to claim the forked coin later, the wallets that @jtipt said are correct except Multibit since that project is no longer maintained. they abandoned it a long time ago and made it official recently.
