Finding the ‘Goldilocks’ Zone’: Striking the Balance Between Regulation and Innovation in the Digital Currency Space

That is a great article Chris!  Congratulations!

I thought so too. Very well done, Chris.

Article here on 'bad conduct' in a widely used cryptocurrency market could have an impact on fiat. Ignore the title, it's worth a read. DNotes holistic approach will help alleviate some of the problems mentioned in this article, without any entity requiring 'power' or 'control'. It won't be easy, it will take dedication and perseverance.

Research: Federal Reserve Needs Power Over Bitcoin

The Federal Reserve and European Central Bank should be given a mandate to monitor threats bitcoin and digital currency systems pose to the broader financial system, a new report from a Suffolk University researcher argues.

Entitled "$=€=Bitcoin?", the report speculates as to the potential dangers that the more widespread use of bitcoin as a digital money with no government backing, analyzing how circumstances arise where this threatens national and international economies.

The paper follows a February 2014 statement from Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen, who said that the US central bank does not have the authority to regulate digital currencies. Further, the European Central Bank published a report last year that, while largely dismissive the technology, indicated the bank is monitoring developments.

More broadly, the report argues that the mandate is necessary given that the general population is not aware of central bank boundaries, meaning the central bank could "bear responsibility" for a systemic crash should it affect either or both markets.

The report reads:

"Even if the central bank had no mandate to regulate virtual currencies, a failure of a widely-used virtual currency could imperil confidence in the central bank, which could adversely affect its ability to govern the more traditional money supply and payment systems."

The author argues that the decentralized nature of bitcoin suggests government action will be necessary should any "bad conduct" materialize in the market.

"The result is likely to be an increased need for ex-post intervention, and it would be preferable if the intervention plan were well thought-out, rather than a messy, ad hoc plan developed in the heat of a crisis," it continues.

Overall, the author makes the plea for action to be taken to address how governments should respond in times of digital currency crises before they become more widely used as a store of value and payment method.

Elsewhere, the full paper explores the definitions of money, while providing detailed overviews of the history of bitcoin, the US dollar and euro, as well as the variations in responsibilities between entities such as the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank.

Source: http://www.coindesk.com/research-federal-reserve-needs-power-over-bitcoin/

I made various attempts to track down the original research work without success. My opinion is strictly based on the article as published by Coindesk.

It seems to me that her conclusions below are highly speculative and baseless. She seems to have fairly shallow knowledge of relative scale.

To put things in prospective, the total market cap of Bitcoin and all other crypto currencies combined  is under $5 Billion. Apple Computer has a market cap of $637 today and Shanghai stock market lost $2 trillion the first 17 day when the decline started at the end of June. US market had many bad days when over $1 trillion was lost in a single day.

I have no idea what her projected growth path is based on, but to reach a conclusion that “Federal Reserve Needs Power Over Bitcoin?". I don't think so. I am confused. If she is wildly optimistic about Bitcoin massive projected growth why did she tried to argue for more centralized control that would only stifle innovation and growth?

Quote from author:

"If the failed virtual currency had previously been widely used to affect everyday purchases, the resulting payment system failure could impact the normal flow of funds in a way that could retard broader economic growth," the paper said. ……………
In a panic, the financial institution would no longer be able to exchange the virtual currency for the fiat currencies needed to discharge the fiat currency-denominated obligations," it reads. "Instead, the financial institution would either have to sell other assets, or borrow, to raise the necessary fiat currencies to discharge its fiat-currency denominated obligations……..    If a serious systemic crisis were to result, interbank lending would seize up entirely because of a general lack of confidence in financial institutions and their collateral – and if interbank lending seizes up, then the flow of credit to the economy at large will also seize," it reads. "

DNotes Community,

I am the volunteer from PayServices that has been working on getting DNotes on their MultiExchange Operating System. https://www.payservices.com/#modal

PayServices will be soon launching their Crypto Integration Platform which will first feature 50 CryptoCurrencies DNotes being one of them. This will allow DNotes to be instantly converted into 49 other CryptoCurrencies (400 Cryptos Total before the end of the year) along with 130 Fiat Currencies( including USD, Euro, Pounds Sterling, Yuan etc) and 16 Complimentary Currencies including some as part of the Clinton Initiative. I believe the convertibility of the platform between Cryptos along with all the Fiat Currencies will be handy. Hopefully this will happen soon (No ETA) I have been in touch with the DNotes Founder and helped put him in touch with the VP of PayServices and was told that their conversation went extremely well.
https://www.payservices.com/currency.php

I have been in Crypto since 2011 and have been involved in quite a few developments as an assistant lead along with volunteering as a moderator in another CryptoForum. I mined DNotes back on day one and have always been a big fan of this great CryptoCurrency along with its great community and now the DNotes founder who in my book is the most impressive individual yet to date that I have met in Crypto.

Congratulations everyone for the Steadfast work here!!!

BTW- I made a withdrawal from the Vault for the first time the other day. I confirmed it by email I need to go back and re-read the help section to make sure I did it correctly. So I might be back asking for advice sooner than later. ;-)

Anyway, thank you and Congratulations on your work. Please feel free to contact me regarding any PayServices related questions or anything please feel free to contact me PM.

~NorCal

Hi NorCal and welcome to the DNotes forum!  That is great news that DNotes is going to be listed on PayServices.  I am going to study it thoroughly this weekend and may have a question or two next week.  Thanks for all your hard work helping us out!  Smiley

Anything, I can do please do not hesitate to contact me here, pm or norcalanon707[at]gmail[dot]com and that goes for anyone in this community anytime.

Best,

~NorCal

Welcome NorCal. I was looking into your site when Dyna mentioned it the other day, impressive list of services. DNotes will be a great match for your company.

I am only a volunteer and friend of the owners. PayServices is going to be a game changer. DNotes will be the CryptoCurrency credited for helping raise awareness to the PayServices MultiExchange Operating System. I see them both making history here together and we are very close to seeing this take place. I will try to get Lionel Danenberg CEO/Owner of PayServices Inc over here to say hello as soon as I can. A friendly Crypto Welcome will be enjoyable for him after all the FUD Horror stories I have told him that goes on in other Crypto Communities. DNotes being the community that all coin communities can hopefully model themselves to be like. Keep up the great work!!!

~NorCal

Welcome to the world of DNotes, NorCal! I am glad that others can see what we are doing, and why we are doing it. From what Alan has told me, Mr. Danenberg is a very capable and insightful visionary. The way it sounds, Alan and Mr. Danenberg share a vision for the future. Gonna be an exciting ride!

I have not been posting much lately, but be sure I am not missing a thing. Been VERY busy in the gardens. We have dug up several hundred thousand clumps of daylilies, split them into single plants, and have replanted more than 350,000 plants so far this summer. All the while, shipping out hundreds, or thousands of plants daily. I, for one, am looking forward to the slowdown after we are done with digging/replanting for the year, should be done in about one to two weeks. After that, it will be just daily shipping, (until november 1) and getting ready for winter. You guys are doing a great job. It is nice to see a community come together for a common cause. Kudos to all.

Smokey
The Flower King

Holy Toledo Smokey!!!! Thats some serious work!!!!

Yes, Willy Danenberg and Alan see eye to eye and hold no illusions regarding whats to come.

I believe truly that the Danenberg introduction might be what will define my place in Crypto after 4 years of struggle and mediocre at best results combined with more errors than I can count.

" A wise man once said that an error only becomes a mistake when you refuse to correct it" John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I look forward to bringing Lionel by here to meet you all. Willy Danenberg is his father and Lionel is PayServices CEO and one of the top coders in the world. A very impressive young man who like his father, cares about the future, society and person Freedoms and our right to choose as individuals our own financial futures.

We will be chatting again, thats for sure. :-)

~Norcal

NorCal, thank you for introducing yourself to our community. We are very appreciative of your great introduction of DNotes to PayServices. This could be the "lucky break" for all parties involved.

We are living in a different world than just years ago. Visionaries like Willy and me must, and we are, be bold and confront big issues on a global scale through collaboration and unity of force, supported by solid foundations well crafted and built with passion and tireless hard work.

Strategic partnership can move mountains which otherwise may not be possible. We can hope to achieve network effect and wait for a life time without seeing it happened or we can plan for it to take place through the unity of force resulting from strategic partnerships giving the new alliance unmatched strength and agility. While this is speculative on my part at such an early stage of discussion, I trust that there many favorable factors that could lead to that.

When Willy and I met two days ago via a Skype call, we both assumed that we were strangers to each other. We were pleasantly surprised that we had a great business relationship some 23 years ago. He was one of Dauphin's best European customers when I was the CEO. Willy described a great service support incident in such details like it took place a week ago. In short, our service department took great care of him. Once his Dauphin computer came in by DHL we immediately fixed it, had someone drove to the airport to make the next flight and he got it back the next day. His important customer was quite surprised. That is a great start for a renewed relationship. I am excited and looking forward to the possibility of staging a quantum leap together. This will not happen overnight but could be within striking distance.

DCEBrief is looking awesome! We are only getting started and not even ready for launch.

A big thank you to all DCEBrief contributors. I am predicting that our list of contributors will grow to a record breaking number. No fluff or fillers will become our theme in our world of information overload. Getting an article published in DCEBrief will be prestigious one day. We always have a dream and this is just a new one added to our long list. We will continue to do things others wouldn't so that one day we could do things others couldn't. Building DNotes to be the trusted global digital currency for everyone worldwide is a big dream supported by many little dreams. Once a little dream becomes a reality it becomes a build block.

Just had some ideas I had to write down before I forget, not sure if useful or not. I'm doing this from an iphone at the moment...

Possible slogans for DCEBrief:

"Just the information, without the opinion..."
"Just the facts, no conjecture..."
"Unfiltered facts, figures and information."
"Crypto Industry info without fluff and filler."
"DCEBrief, just the facts..."

I like this one best "Crypto Industry info without fluff and filler." I have been thinking about it when I can. It is important not to define ourselves (DCEBrief) in such a way that we be "boxed". I am even a little concern about using the word "unbiased". "without the opinion", "no conjecture" could lead to commitments beyond what we can fulfill. A lot of that is judgmental, depending on one's prospective. We are getting close but still somewhat unsettled. Any one who wants to share their opinion, this is the time to do it. Thanks.

It's difficult to determine what is a opinion and what isnt, and even more difficult to write without forming a written opinion. The most compelling and thought provoking reading, at least to me, is when the writer can present the case, often identify the sides or opinions, and leave it up to the reader to make judgement.

When you have to form an opinion, qualify it, make sure it is clear to anyone.

Completely unbiased may not be possible.

True, we can encourage the writer to qualify the opposing opinion and let the readers decide; but that could be challenging sometime.

There will be a slight bias towards DNotes no matter how hard we try to avoid it.

I think we have to be careful here.  None of us want fluff and filler, but if we keep shortening the content, we will end up with no story and nothing to grab the reader.  Without some outside info, there may not seem like any urgency in what we are trying to promote.  For example, letting the reader know that there is more student debt in the US than there is credit card debt (1.2T vs. 900B) gives urgency to the CRISP For Students and probably even the CRISP For Kids. Every writer wants to write a story (even if it is short and to the point) and a talented one can take a couple powerful facts and turn it into a 'must read'.  They also like to have their opinion heard so I would tread lightly on that one. Wink  We also may get some fantastic outside opinions on things that we never thought of.  The joy of paying for articles and choosing the ones we like best, is the that if the opinion is off the wall, we don't have to print it. Smiley

Thanks, Chase that is very well expressed. Staying close to the purpose and mission of DCEBrief will always be important, so is maintaining a balance without being extreme.

DNotes is more than just another digital currency. It is a trusted digital currency with a purpose, supported by our own ecosystem, solidly constructed with many highly scalable building blocks that are all strategically linked. The daily market price of DNotes is based on supply and demand but the fundamental value of DNotes can only be realized over the long-term based on the incremental value we are adding to our ecosystem and our trusted brand everyday. That will make a world of difference but not so obvious until DNotes is discovered by many potential investors who have never heard of us.

Looks like the forum was down for most of the day. Was that everyone?

Holding out #1 position on Cryptsy at 46268 votes, but as RJF has mentioned, we should continue to create a larger gap between us and the next on the list. Thanks again everyone for voting.

I have not been there for a while. Good to know that we are still at position # 1. Agreed. We should continue our voting efforts.

We are making promising progress to be listed on a new worldwide exchange; when fully implemented will make it possible for people to purchase DNotes with over 100 different currencies plus debit or credit cards. Approved locations will also allow for automatic withdrawal from checking or savings accounts. I am very excited about these possibilities and will announce more details as they become available.

Guys, you know I don't post economic stuff willy nilly here. I suggest you read this one:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/08/19/us-china-markets-idUSKCN0QO0CO20150819

I have a very busy schedule this morning but managed to give the article a quick look. It has been apparent that the Chinese Government has been much more aggressive in managing their “free market” economy than most countries and there are consequences when there are more issues beyond their control than they anticipated. This is clearly the case.

"We advise strapping in for a bumpy ride," said Tim Condon, head of Asia research for ING Bank in Singapore.

What is more concerning is that the damages caused are already negatively affecting the rest of the world. For now, United Stated is benefiting from a strong USD as a result of the being the most secured world currency relative to other currencies out of a “Bucketful of Bad Options

What DNotes has pledged to do is to provide a viable alternative so that interested investors can diversify a small amount of their investment in a high risk/high reward account as an insurance, just in case of a total collapse as in the case of Greece. For maximum benefits, it is essential to have a disciplined investment strategy; investing a small amount for the long term.

Good day everyone,

I just wanted to share this with the general users here as a reminder of what Bitcoin and cryptos (DNOTES) are all about. While there are a many of us that are here for profits (and there is nothing wrong with that), I wanted to share this video as a reminder that LTC, BTC, DNOTES and any other legitimate currency are really here in order to overcome the atrocities that bankers have done to us. It is a 30 minute video, but it will open up your eyes as to what is really going on with the government, the federal reserve, and banking in general. I encourage everyone to watch this!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFDe5kUUyT0

Certainly worth watching. Like a handful of life frogs in a pot of cold water with the burner turned on, many will put up with the pain until it's too late.

I sometime wished I could spend time to enjoy my retirement and grand kids, but how could I after watching a video like that. I know the producers might have a self-serving agenda but today's fiat currency values are not much more just I.O.Us. Oh, the best way to dramatize fractional reserve is that they have two chairs for every 100 people, except their music doesn't stop for as long as they can avoid it. What happen if the music suddenly stops. Look no further than the pain and suffering in Greece. Many ended up losing their life savings. Our family of CRISPs are not expected to be the total solution, but an alternative for some diversification, almost like a small amount of insurance protection, just in case...

There is great speech of a coach addressing his football team moments before the crucial game starts. I can't remeber the name of this movie nor the actor on the coach shoes, but this is a well known piece because of it's inspiration. well, I've already said this about your words, and I say this again: wonderful text

Hello everyone. Hope you all had a great weekend. I have been gone for two days and will probable take a whole week just to catch up on what I missed; just the important stuff.

Driving 3 1/2 hours each way gave me a lot of thinking time. I am still amazed at myself on how I could have traveled down that route every week for six years, while I could have embarked in other ventures that could have been a lot less demanding and made me more money.

It boiled down to two words I used as the headline of the lead article I wrote recently for DCEBrief: "Purpose - Mission". Part of my purpose in life is always to use my strength and wisdom to help others who appreciate my contributions and can benefit from them. That was how Smokeys Daylily Gardens got started. I become committed to help a group of people to become successful, including their employees.

Defining the mission and conveying that as a clear and consistent message so that everyone share the same mind-set has taken years and still being re-enforced constantly... " Be the best in class in everything that we do". That might explained why Smokeys Daylily Gardens is one of the largest daylily growers in the world today. And this is only the beginning. We have created thousands of our own unique breeds and once registered they will help take the company to the next level, likely creating a class of its own. By then it would be ten years from the start.

There are a lot of parallels with DNotes and our whole ecosystems. With my skill-sets and experience, it would be a lot less demanding to be an investor in a number of top coins and supplemented with proven day trading techniques that I know. That might be easier and more financially rewarding over the short term but I just don't see the purpose with a mission I could be passionate about.

The more I thought about it, the more I concluded that DNotes is much more than just another digital currency. It is a purposeful coin with multiple missions. Our core mission is the be the trusted digital currency for everyone worldwide; to be a true alternative to fiat currency; not as a replacement but as a supplement - almost as an insurance against a total or substantial collapse of the value of any national currency they happened to be a part of.

Additionally, each project we are involved has its own specific mission. No wonder I am keeping myself so busy. This is my second 10 year back to back project. We will be a class of our own one day. In the mean time, we must be respectful of our industry peers and be ready to be helpful when we can. That is how we can gain respect and cooperation.

Among the most important emails I received the last two days, two are from existing coins (one ahead of us in marketcap) and one new coin currently in development in Greece. They are all fans of DNotes. A fourth email is from a someone who owns a very large global funds with many CFPs on staff who often recommended investment of up to 10% on high risk/high reward investment including gold.

Hope you got my idea.  We are gaining ground with great respect. That is worth the hard work and the wait.

Thanks for your kind words, Mati. I can try guessing the message the football coach might have tried  to convey as it relates to DNotes. Champions become champions because they wanted the championship more than the others competing for it. It is about giving it all as an individual and as a team, with a purpose and a single mission, and never giving up despite occasional frustration and pain.

It may be fair to suggest that we have always wanted DNotes to be the trusted global digital currency for everyone worldwide more than anyone else in our industry. We firmly believe that DNotes is purposeful with multiple missions to provide viable financial alternatives to fiat currency; not as a replacement but as a supplement. Ultimately, when DNotes is accepted everywhere it will become the most efficient medium of exchange without the need and cost of a middleman.

Anyone familiar with payservices? Please comments. Thanks.

https://www.payservices.com/currency.php?type=crypto

I haven't seen or heard of them before, looks interesting though. As far as I can tell, they provide money services for business including a payment card credit and exchange, websites, web hosting, product catalogs, a proprietary secure browser.

They have a very ambitious project but will likely take some time to smooth things out. The owners, supporters behind it are impressive. Willy Danenbery and Lionel Danebery are CEO/owners of PayServices. There is also an indication of association with professor Benard Lietaer and the European Central Bank. Although they could be listing as many as 400 coins DNotes could play an important role because of the increasing amount of respect we have been getting. We are absolutely certain that we are on the right tracks. Just be patience and continue to do the right things.

Here is Chase's latest version of the executive summary for CRISP for Kids. Let us know what you think.

CRISP for Kids is an unstructured and self directed cryptocurrency savings plan for children using DNotes. It was created to help the world's children develop strong saving habits early, in order to help secure their financial future. Their long-term investment horizon and the early stage of the digital currency industry allows for significant capital appreciation.

There is little chance that traditional investments and low yielding bank accounts will be enough to provide for a child's future.  They will need to seek alternative investments like DNotes for a portion of their portfolio in order to have a realistic chance of accumulating enough money to meet their goals.

Still working on the full article, but here is the latest version, subject to change:

CRISP For Kids - The Cryptocurrency Investment Savings Plan is Born

The CRISP For Kids program began as a joint pilot project of DNotes and CryptoMoms in July 2014. It was designed to evolve around CryptoMoms, a currency neutral site dedicated to encourage women's participation in cryptocurrency. This design allows for the easy participation of family and friends. http://cryptomoms.com/

CRISP for kids was created to help the world's children and grandchildren develop strong saving habits early, in order to help secure their financial future. All CRISPs (Cryptocurrency Investment Savings Plan) are unstructured and self directed plans, using DNotes as the investment vehicle. Re-occurring savings, in any amount, may be added at any time.

After the launch of the CRISP, it soon became evident that the parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles from around the world are genuinely concerned about the financial well being of the children in their families. In fact, many of the kids currently in the program were signed up by their grandparents who gave them a gift of DNotes to get them started.

Children are great candidates for a long term savings plan in digital currency. Their long term investment horizon and the early stage of the digital currency industry allows for significant capital appreciation.

Anyone can set up or contribute to a child's CRISP, giving this program the potential to help children around the world. A teacher could establish CRISPs for all of his or her students, and at the same time start teaching the class about digital currency. Cryptocurrency can be a powerful lesson tool and what is new and evolving today will be the norm for them in the future.

The funds from the CRISP can be used by the child for their education, travel, their first home, as well as many other things. By the time the children are old enough to withdraw the DNotes, they will be very grateful their parents or grandparents had the foresight to take early advantage of an investment in digital currency.

With the launch of the DNotesVault in December, 2014, you need little more than an email address to start a CRISP. All deposits sent to any DNotesVault address are securely stored offline in DNotes cold storage vault with a 100% guarantee. http://www.dnotesvault.com/

Everyone at CryptoMoms is very proud of the CRISP For Kids program and it is a delight reading the posts of the proud parents and grandparents as they share a little bit about each child. Some have left messages that will outlive the writer and it is starting to have almost a time-capsule feeling.

CryptoMoms and the DNotes team are dedicted to helping anyone interested in starting a CRISP for any child. Please visit:

I've shortened the brief to match the length of the other ones posted (thanks TeeGee).  And after reading RJF's post on executive briefs, realized that the second sentence in the first paragagh should be eliminated.  I also tried to get the important info in the first few paragraghs.  Mati suggested the bank comparison subject. I also put the links at the end of the article.  Please let me know if there is anything else this needs.

Thank you Alan, Joe, Mati, TeeGee, and RJF for the input.  It was an enormous help!!

CRISP For Kids - The Cryptocurrency Investment Savings Plan is Born

Brief:

CRISP for Kids is an unstructured and self directed cryptocurrency savings plan for children using DNotes.  Their long-term investment horizon and the early stage of the digital currency industry allows for significant capital appreciation.

There is little chance that traditional investments and low yielding bank accounts will be enough to provide for a child’s future. They will need to seek alternative investments like DNotes for a portion of their portfolio in order to have a realistic chance of accumulating enough money to meet their goals.

Article:

The CRISP For Kids program began as a joint pilot project of DNotes and CryptoMoms in July 2014.  It was designed to evolve around CryptoMoms, a currency neutral site dedicated to encourage women's participation in cryptocurrency.  All CRISPs are unstructured and self directed plans, using DNotes as the investment vehicle.  Re-occurring savings, in any amount, may be added at any time.

The DNotesVault, providing secure offline cold storage and a 100% deposit guarantee, makes signing up for a CRISP easier than than setting up a bank account.  The combination of operating under the helpful CryptoMoms umbrella and the simple to use DNotesVault allows for easy participation of family and friends.

After the launch of the CRISP, it soon became evident that parents and grandparents from around the world are genuinely concerned about the financial well being of the children in their families.   They realize there is little chance that traditional investments and low-yielding bank accounts will be enough to provide for a child's future.  They will need to seek alternative investments such as DNotes for a portion of their portfolio to have a realistic chance of accumulating enough money to meet their goals.  Many of the children currently in the program were signed up by their grandparents who gave them a gift of DNotes to get them started.

Children are great candidates for a long term savings plan in digital currency.  Their long term investment horizon and the early stage of the digital currency industry allows for significant capital appreciation.

Still trying to hammer out the details for creating an executive brief on DCEBrief. The directors have been on email chain regarding. Here are some thoughts, and I encourage everyone to comment.

The ones on the site now were written by me as filler to get a feel for the visual effect. None of them make it over 100 words.

Visually, beyond 2 paragraphs might start to look like a lot to read on the homepage. Which is ok, just something to consider. Another idea may be to have a summary, executive brief, then the article.

In true executive summary form, it would cover all the major points without any fluff or filler.

I think we definitely need an upper limit of words for an executive summary, I don't know exactly what that will be, but most have suggested in the 200-300 range.

Do we need a minimum amount of words, as long as it meets the executive summary criteria?

I agree that any more than around 100 words or 2 paragraghs may be too much and a bit crowded.  This way the whole page can be read very quickly for someone in a rush.

"Another idea may be to have a summary, executive brief, then the article."  Would this mean that contributing writers would have to write 3 separate writeups?

Could the brief (homepage) be a few of the strongest key points to get the reader to check further if interested and then have full article follow the no fluff or filler rule as well?  Or the first ___ paragraghs of the full article must constitute the executive brief requirements (maybe highlighted in a different color background)?

These are just my random thoughts so please add on...

Thanks Chase, as we write a few more I think we will get a better feel for it as well.

Summary + brief + article might be a much huh?

We could give those suggestions a shot and see how it works.

Executive Brief and Executive Summary are basically the same thing. Check out the advise from "Inc." below: (geared towards business plan summaries but still useful.)

How to Write an Executive Summary

When you're trying to sell an idea to a potential investor, you'll need to craft the pitch-perfect executive summary. Here's how to write one that will get your business plan read and your foot in the door.

Whether you've put together a business plan or an investment proposal, you're going to need an executive summary to preface your report. The summary should include the major details of your report, but it's important not to bore the reader with minutiae. Save the analysis, charts, numbers, and glowing reviews for the report itself. This is the time to grab your reader's attention and let the person know what it is you do and why he or she should read the rest of your business plan or proposal.

The executive summary is also an important way for you, as the entrepreneur, to determine which aspects of your company have the clearest selling points, and which aspects may require a bit more explanation. Akira Hirai, founder and CEO of Phoenix-based Cayenne Consulting, a firm that helps entrepreneurs develop business plans and financial forecasts, says the process of distilling the essence of your business down to a page forces you to think hard, decide what's important, and discard things that aren't essential to the story line. "By doing this," he says, "you develop a better vision of what your business is all about, and you become better at telling your story."

Why Write It?

Investors, lenders, executives, managers, and CEOs are busy. Always. That means the executive summary is an essential gateway for your business plan to get read. Think about it this way: If you had an endless list of things to do, and someone handed you an 80-page document and said, "Read this!" you'd probably first want to know why.

"The most important reason to include an executive summary is that in many cases, it is the only thing the reader will read," says Pablo Bonjour, founder and CEO of Katy, Texas-based SMG Business Plans, a company that offers entrepreneurs assistance in writing business plans. According to Bonjour, investors will read the executive summary to decide if they will even bother reading the rest of the business plan. It's rare for an investor or lender to read an entire business plan, at least in the initial stages of analysis and consideration for funding, so having a strong executive summary is key.

When you're writing your business plan, your goal is to get your foot in the door and face time with the investor. "Assuming that your business is a good fit for the investor, a strong executive summary will get you invited in for a meeting," Hirai says. "A poor executive summary will leave you standing in the cold."

The First Paragraph

Just as a movie might begin with a fight scene or a magazine article open with a funny anecdote, you'll need a strong hook for your executive summary.

"The most important part of an executive summary is the first paragraph that clearly explains what the company does," according to Dave Lavinsky, president of Growthink, a Los Angeles-based company that helps entrepreneurs develop business plans and raise capital. "Most business plans start with a story that tries to create excitement, and this doesn't always work."

One way to think about it, says Hirai, is that your executive summary needs an executive summary. The first paragraph needs to compel the reader to read the rest of the summary. Perhaps you have a compelling aha! moment, so you might start with that. If you've identified a problem in the marketplace that isn't being adequately serviced, you might start with that.

The Nuts and Bolts

There is no set structure for an executive summary, but there are guidelines you must follow to ensure your business plan or investment proposal gets the attention it deserves. First, think about your core strengths. Use bullet points to present your ideas, and make sure you always use concise language.

"You need to match your story to your audience, your business, and your desired outcomes," says Hirai. "If you have an exceptional management team, you might start with that."

Ask yourself what's unique and exciting about your company. After you've explained what your company does, it's time to sell why you believe you're uniquely qualified to succeed.

Lavinsky recommends addressing these questions when putting together your executive summary:

• Do you have a unique partnership?

• Do you already have customers and traction?

• Do you have patents or technology?

• Is your marketing plan special in some way?

Depending on your audience, you can also try a more rigid approach to the executive summary. After the first paragraph, Bonjour says one effective structure is to summarize each section in the same order in which the items are presented within the full business plan. To make the structure as relevant as possible for the reader, typically an investor or a lender, he suggests considering these categories:

• A Company Description Summary

• The Problem

• Your Solution

• Why Now

The Why Now category is one of the most important questions to answer, because it makes your executive summary timely. The last thing you want is to leave the reader feeling like there's plenty of time to act. Chances are, if there isn't any urgency to your executive summary, your business plan won't get read.

After describing the elements above, the executive summary should also have a brief financial summary. For your financials, Bonjour suggests including the valuation of the deal, so that the reader knows right away what the risks are, and what the returns can be.

Strictly Professional or Humorous? What's the Tone?

This depends on who your readers are. Do your research. If you're presenting your plan to investors, make sure the language of the executive summary caters to their backgrounds. For example, if you know your investor has a degree in chemical engineering, your language might be different from that in the executive summary presented to an investor who studied philosophy.

In other words, "use language that will resonate with your target audience," says Hirai. Don't be afraid to change your executive summary when you present it to different investors. Consider creating different versions for each audience, he says, but make sure that it's always kept professional, crisp, and free of any embarrassing errors. Another good tip he gives is to use personal pronouns (e.g., "we" and "our") over general nouns (e.g., "the company"). Your reader will feel a stronger personal connection with you, your brand, and your idea if you can relate to the reader in the first person.

Don't forget to be confident, either. If the writer does not clearly believe in this company, says Bonjour, why should the reader believe in it? Put yourself in your reader's shoes, and ask yourself why you would want to invest in a company. "Think about it like a job interview or asking a girl out on a date," he says. "If you are not confident and don't act like you want it, chances are you won't get anywhere."

The Length

Remember, every executive summary is--and should be--unique. Depending on the size of the business plan or investment proposal you're sending, the executive summary's length will vary. However, the general consensus is that an executive summary should be between one and four pages long.

Think logically. A two-page summary can be printed on the front and back of a single page, which can feel like a professional brochure. And if you can't tell the essence of your story in a page or two, says Hirai, then you probably haven't thought things through well enough.

Echoing this thought, Bonjour asserts that "you can cheat a bit by using smaller fonts, widening your margins, shrinking images and tables, but ultimately you need to summarize everything contained within the executive summary. After all, it is called a 'summary' for a reason."

What to Avoid

"The reason most business entrepreneurs get executive summaries wrong is that they believe the goal of the executive summary is to get the investors to give them a check," says Lavinsky. "The goal of the executive summary is to get the investor to read the business plan or to meet with you."

With that in mind, clear your vocabulary of any superlatives, clichés, or claims that can't be backed up, he adds. Avoid using terms like "the best," "groundbreaking," "cutting-edge," and "world-class." "Investors see those words day in and day out," he says, "and eventually they lose meaning."

Note:

The only thing I don't agree with is the "one to four pages", thats way too long for our purposes. They are mainly talking about summarizing business plans where being brief can be 4 pages long. I think, for our purposes, a 300 word cap would be appropriate.

Very good article, on Executive Summary. Thanks RJF. Executive Summary is a must in any business plan, but should be in every report to senior executive. It should also be included in every research paper and resume among others. The length could be a short paragraph to a few pages. In our particular case, a couple of short paragraphs seems to be the best format.

Understand that there are a lot of recommendations, but as far as I know, it does not have an established industry standard. We know that its primary objective is to keep busy executives informed with the least amount of time spent. The second objective is to entice the reader to read more. In the case of DCEBrief, we have already decided upon RFJ recommendation of no "fluff or filler" that full length article will be our exception than the rule. To a large extend then, our articles are already written close to an executive summary format. That being the case the two paragraphs we are proposing will carry the most weight if they convey the most compelling message of the article sufficiently persuasive to the reader to want to read the whole article. Writing is not considered my area of strength, so please take this as just another opinion.

I am also thinking of an additional re-enforcement, using the last paragraph (conclusion) as the "closing argument" for the entire article. That itself could be the executive summary as is, or with minor modification. DCEBrief could become a class of its own in our world where information overload is becoming a serious problem. Don't feel offended that I no longer read every word posted on our forum. That is just the fact our life.

I will be out of town this weekend but came across this article I thought should be of concern to our industry. There are even more common grounds for our industry to unit and promote a single decentralized global digital currency. Otherwise the major banks will soon be out in force to justify that there is no place for Bitcoin and other digital currency since they can effectively move fiat currency around efficiently.

I think this calls for worldwide industry initiated education campaign (like the one DNotes has started).

The banks are not doing this for the benefit of the consumer or to help people around the world to be included in economic prosperity.  This is 100% about getting rid of a few jobs in the middle and increasing their profit margins.

Perhaps we shouldn't focus the campaign on what the banks will be able to do, but rather on what they will never be able to do.  For example, if they will also have lightening fast transaction speed, we shouldn't focus so much attention on that.  They will NEVER put people first with the opportunity to share in the profits and other opportunities of a global currency.

Chase, you are right on the money. I will comment on this more next week. Our industry needs to define this new reality before they attempt to define us. Decentralized digital currency is truly the currency for everyone worldwide and the owners are their own bank. No middlemen, no sneaky bank  fees. Peer to peer medium of exchange.

Wow! Ethereum must be a trader's dream or nightmare, depending on the position one takes. It is certainly sucking up a lot of money out of the industry. It was up by over 70% this morning and now up 4%. With over $5 million already changed hand, someone lost a lot of money while a few are laughing all the way to the bank. It reminds me of Ripple of which I am still over 70% in the red after over a year and Bitshares which I almost wanted to make a heavy bet and would have lost over 87% from its high of $100 million, and now at $13 million. Guess I better hang on to my DNotes. Not the most exiting but at least I can get some sleep at night.

Watch for Tau Chain: http://cointelegraph.com/news/115118/tau-chain-a-decentralized-app-store-with-greater-flexibility-than-ethereum  and many more but remember that DNotes is a pure digital currency play until the Blockchain technologies get a little more matured or battle tested. Reportedly venture capital have been correct in one out of twenty bets.
