My mistake on the hue of this stone.  This is slightly bluish-Green.  The stone is predominantly green.
1691  Economy / Auctions / 5 day auction 1.46 carat tourmaline starting at 5btc increment .5btc on: January 04, 2012, 12:03:49 PM
This is a gorgeous round tourmaline that weighs 1.46 carats and has a magnificent slightly greenish-Blue hue.  It is from Nigeria and is guaranteed to be natural with only heat as the treatment.  This stone's color has not been altered with chemicals, and it has not been fissure-filled.  The dimensions are 6.95mm in diameter and 4.57mm deep.

This auction is ONLY 5 DAYS- be sure to bid now if you are interested.

Tourmaline is one of the most sought-after gemstones in the collectible and jewelry markets.  It is extremely popular in both Japan and China.  Probably the main reasons it is so popular is that it is beautiful, durable, and comes in a very wide range of colors.  It is also very beautiful with only heat-treatment and does not require dyes or diffusion typically, but it should be noted that some unscrupulous dealers will attempt to sell their diffused or dyed stones as "untreated" or only heat.

This gemstone is "SI" clarity which means "slightly included".  The inclusions do not interfere with the durability of the stone, and are quite small.  The inclusions are one way to determine that this is a natural gemstone.

Shipping will be via registered air mail from Bangkok, Thailand and takes 15-25 days.  The shipping charge is $10.  To compute your total, please always use the MtGox "last price"- not the bid or ask.

I am going to attach Dr. William Hanneman's garnet chart here.  If you have any questions about this, just ask me.  Garnet names in the bars show a range of numbers if you follow the beginning and ending of the bars to the bottom of the page.  For example, look at tsavorite.  If you see the beginning of the blue bar and follow it to the bottom of the chart you see that it hits just above 1.73.  The end of the blue tsavorite bar hits at about 1.76.  So if you have a tsavorite, it will have a reading above 1.73 and below 1.76 on a refractometer.

So, who cares?  LOL.  Well- gemologists like I do, and consumers like you do too.  We both want to accurately sell/buy gemstones.  And we don't want to study or buy or sell a stone for one type when it is actually another type!  So since it is in our best interest let's take a look at a refractometer.  That is the little gadget that gives you the numbers on Dr. Hanneman's chart.  And all those numbers really do is tell you how much a stone bends light.  That is ALL you need to know.  Some bend it more, some bend it less- and the numbers tell you that in detail.  The why is not relevant.  The how is not relevant.

This is a refractometer:

When it is properly set up, and you look into the big magnifying glass on the front, you see a picture like this:

In order to get a picture like this- with a shade cutoff- you have to have a stone in place.  And let me tell you just how smart you are, dear reader.  You are smart enough to know that this stone that was on the refractometer when the pic of the scale was taken was NOT a garnet!  How do you know this?  Well, the picture indicates 1.60.  And if you look at the bottom of Dr. Hanneman's chart, you can see that garnets go from a low of about 1.71 to a high of about 1.89.  The stone in place that produced the 1.60 reading can't be a garnet!  Amazing, and amazingly simple and fun.

If you have any questions about gemology, or about how to get started learning more about gemstones please get in touch with me.  I am happy to share what I have learned while becoming a gemologist and a gem dealer here in Thailand.  Send me a note at
