1681  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling 10 Ixcoin for Bitcoins on: August 10, 2011, 11:08:52 PM
You are going to set precedent for the exchange rate here.

I will offer .00000001 for 1000 Ixcoin. Keep mining, fella.
1682  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buying at least 10 BTC. I'd like to use wells fargo customer transfer or paypal on: August 10, 2011, 11:05:42 PM
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

That is a pretty inclusive list of merchants and exchanges, if you haven't come across it before.

There are some local exchanges. Maybe one is in your area? Also consider craigslist. I know it seems sketchy, but I doubt many smash-and-grab criminals have the background to bullshit this in the slightest.
1683  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Ixcoin - a new Bitcoin fork on: August 10, 2011, 10:43:48 PM
Ouch!!!!

But it's not ripoff when the source is free Smiley

Sex is free too, but rapists still exist.

C'mon, son, gimme a Baaaaaaaaaaam! Green eggs and haaaaaaaaaaaam!

Edit: Oh, and since such forks tend to be lower difficulty (even lower than namecoin usually) they also make mining more accessible. BTC and NMC both have difficulties so high that CPU mining is more than unprofitable, it's flat out impossible. Let the casuals mine the forks and those of us with dedicated rigs will still mine BTC. There's nothing wrong with forks, we just need a good exchange to support them all.

This has already been addressed in this thread...like GPU miners aren't just going to roll in, rape the difficulty, and leave four months of slogging along for the chumps who stick with it. Taking a page from Phinnaeus Gage's book; Namecoin: It sort of sucks for those who really believe in it.
1684  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buying at least 10 BTC. I'd like to use wells fargo customer transfer or paypal on: August 10, 2011, 10:15:37 PM
Well, that's another reason for me to hate wells fargo.

Is paypal considered safer?  How would wells fargo even know I sent money for bitcoin?  Isn't there some IRC channel I can simply say i'll pay you $11 for a BTC?

There is a mass of paranoia in the community right now due to a bunch of high profile thefts.

Pretty much all non-cash transactions in the US are reversible, usually for a long time, like, 180 days long. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is instantaneous and non-reversible and non-traceable in a practical sense, so the buyer could conceivably receive the bitcoin, and then commit fraud by either a)claiming they never received the goods or b)claiming the transfer was made to the wrong party. Either way, seller is screwed and has no recourse. Imagine going to the police and rambling about hashes and crypto-currency and sha256 encryption. They'd be more likely to lock you up than take you seriously.

There are some local bitcoin exchanges, maybe google bitcoin otc?

e: You can do an intra-customer transfer for whatever reason you want...bitcoin isn't illegal yet, and what the money is moving for is no business of the bank. That isn't really the issue as suggested above.

Great, thanks.  I had a feeling it was about right, but always helps to get a second opinion.  Now if someone has an idea how to increase the BTC/day rate 5-10%, then I'll really be happy  Grin

Pool hop. All you need to do is sacrifice your dignity.
sacrifice your dignity?
haha, funniest stuff i've heard today.

but yeah, feel free to keep your dignity. i keep my 60% increase in output. :3

deal.

At the current difficulty level are you seeing about 1 BTC per day per 1.9 Gh/s?  Just wanted to sanity check my performance with others, knowing of course that there are variations in luck and other factors.  Presently only using arsbitcoin.com as my pool.

Getting that minus stales and donations, but also on Ars.
1688  Economy / Economics / Re: 8/8/11 and the big "meh" on: August 10, 2011, 08:14:05 PM
I'm officially changing my donation tag to be 100% devoted to eliminating the tea party.

It is a bit ignorant to blame this all on one group imo. The United States has been on this downward spiral way before the Tea Party and will continue if we do not fix out mess even without the tea party. Just my .02

The fact remains that they were responsible for the "Grand Compromise" not going through.  That led to the panicked deadline and left us where we're at now.  The market would have continued up-and-down but now it's spooked (being something based on mass psychology).

Nevermind the fact that combined they have an IQ of a potato.

Quote
Seriously, did you even think through what you are suggesting? What is the benefit of them pulling X blocks to Pool A today, then pulling X blocks to Pool B tomorrow then putting X blocks back into Pool C the day after?

I already explained. To create large variations in luck which makes stealing -- if there is any -- much more difficult to see. And the luck on one pool can be increased above normal to make it more attractive to miners.

Well I was kicked out of #bitcoin-police for talking about this.

I told <Eleuthria> that if he converted his pool(s) over to PPS that all the suspected cheating could end, but he didn't want to.

And I was wrong about moving blocks/shares back and forth because he said that a share is only valid on the that one pool. But I'm pretty sure there are other ways of accomplishing the exact same thing like diverting hashing power from one pool to another or having one pool generate shares which are valid for the other pool so really it makes no difference.

<XRcode> Mad7Scientist, if you continue the false accusations you will be kicked
<Roadhog> kicked? you mean banned
<Mad7Scientist> Can we have an investigation
<Mad7Scientist> Can I be 100% sure? no.
<XRcode> thhere is nothing to investigate
<XRcode> i know the people running the pools you are accusing
<XRcode> so stop your false accusations.
<Mad7Scientist> Well some of the hashing power can be diverted from one pool to another. I don't know the innerworkings of bitcoin mining
<cjdelisle> Why don't we all be nice to one another and if you think there is foul play, you write the whole thing up and paste it.
<csshih> Eleuthria: don't bother wasting your time in here o.O
<Mad7Scientist> Why not just switch it to PPS?
<XRcode> if you don't know how it works, don't make false accusations
<csshih> seriously. I'm sure you have other things to do
<Eleuthria> Because then I'd have to charge a hefty fee or risk going out of business.
<Mad7Scientist> Eleuthria, there is only a 50% chance of that
<Mad7Scientist> You could also get lucky, and come out with a surplus
<Eleuthria> ...vs guaranteed profit on proportional due to donations
<Eleuthria> Yeah, I'll stick to the sure thing and not be an idiot.
<Mad7Scientist> All suspected cheating can end if you move to PPS
<XRcode> Mad7Scientist, he does not need to change anything about his pool
<Eleuthria> I'll stick to being a suspected cheater then.
<XRcode> it is a good pool
* m0w3r (~IceChat77@108.76.68.42) has joined #bitcoin-police
<cjdelisle> I don't see that there is a lot of suspected cheating now but if you want to write something up we will happily file it.
<csshih> yeah
<XRcode> and alot of people like it.
<Mahkul> Mad7Scientist: If you have a problem with the pools - just start your own one or simply mine solo
<Eleuthria> Because the people with a brain can tell the difference.
<csshih> I loved it when I mined there
<csshih> I just am not mining at the moment
<Eleuthria> You're trying to make accusations about something without even knowing how it works.
<Mad7Scientist> Mahkul, but I don't like seeing other people stolen from
<Eleuthria> You might as well try to be a referee for a game you've never seen before.

1691  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Hacking off CPU cooler from Corsair H50 to add GPU waterblock.... on: August 10, 2011, 01:40:10 AM
Even with your ram underclocked and under utilized, I would strongly suggest ensuring that the rest of the card (especially the power regulation circuitry) gets some cooling. If you have one of those side panel intake fans blowing over the PCIe slots then I wouldn't worry about it too much but otherwise it might be time to start case modding  Grin

The thing that make me cringe about the H50 and H70 (and to a lesser extent other pump on waterblock combo kits) is the mass of all that stuff hanging from a videocard not designed to hold up much weight. Obviously this is only a problem if the system is housed in a tower case.

The heat exchanger/pump module is really small and relatively light, muuuuch lighter than aftermarket GPU heatsinks. The bulk is in the radiator, which is supported elsewhere.
1692  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Could this popular mining pool be cheating its miners? on: August 09, 2011, 07:45:54 PM
Isn't there a simple way to find out? How about a couple of supecting miners decide to use a slightly modded miner that would inform the user when it finds a block.

It'd be sufficient for this group to be able to present only 1 block that was stolen by the operator.

Of course they would have keep their identities secret, otherwise the pool operator can just always leave their blocks untouched and choose blocks of other miners for stealing.

This would at least create a lot of danger for the pool operator. The pool operator getting caught stealing would certainly destroy the pool, so even a slight danger of that happening should keep him from stealing, right?

Am I overlooking something?

That makes perfect sense. What I don't understand is why a mining client can't just keep the block and all 50 BTC for itself when it finds the block. Is there some protection against this happening that would also prevent a mining client from knowing when it finds a block?

Quote
From the period starting at block 137872 to 139410, initially it looked like something was fishy because BTCG found less blocks than Slush despite having higher hashrate, but over the period, this slowly corrected and BTCG found more blocks than Slush, with Slush performing below par (all the top pools were getting about 5.5~6.5 BTC per GH/s while Slush was just below 5). So I figured there probably was nothing fishy going on but merely that the run of bad luck got everybody paranoid and left it at that.

That would suggest that BTCGuild is working with at least one other mining pool to pull this off.

Here is what I think may be happening after thinking about it for a little while. BTCGuild and some other pools, such as Deepbit, or Slush or Ars Bitcoin are actually run by the same people.

The operator of BTCGuild is intentionally manipulating the luck in the pool making it drop very low and then jump up to unexpected highs. On low luck days, they would be doing this by having the pool capture some of the winning shares and sending them over to one of the other pools where that share would be sent out to one of the miners to win. On high luck days, some of the winning shares on the other pools would be captured and sent over to BTCGuild and sent out to the miners to have them win.

During this time, some of the winning shares may be sent off to a private pool where some of the loot is kept, or are sent off to a PPS pool like Ars Bitcoin and help build up that big 800 BTC buffer that they have. Then somebody gets to keep that buffer.

But the amount of actual stealing that takes place depends on weather or not people notice. By manipulating the pool and adding positive luck, it really a great way to make most people not notice that something is wrong. So right now there is probably very little stealing actually going on but there is still a high degree of manipulation!

Why?

My god, you are a fucking idiot...

Silkroad is one of the major non-speculative demands for bitcoins. They have their place...we just don't like to talk about it.

You are right, except some people actually like to talk about it.

Yeah, but at this point, what is there to say that hasn't been said five or six times? Use the search tool.
1695  Economy / Services / Re: Mining contract. You pick the speed, you pick the price, I let say yey or neigh on: August 09, 2011, 07:16:28 AM
Lemme get this straight...you will keep 300MH/s running for the rest of my life if I pay you $1500 for a year of 2.4GH/s service? All other dodginess aside, have you looked at your power bill? I highly doubt your business model is sustainable.

I highly doubt that you will want to run the 300mhs that long after the year is up. But im willing to gamble on that. I get to bring online more hardware, you get my existing hashing power. Then I sell more, and repeat. Works out pretty well. Even if I only sell a few contracts, everything is payed for and eventually I have 1 machine with 4 5830s running until people grow tired of mining.

I am not trying to be a dick here, but if it's free, why the hell would anyone stop? Even if it was way, waaaaay in the red, it's your problem, not that of the purchaser.

That is correct. Ive already sold 2 contracts with the 300mhs free, and one has already contacted me starting he does not need the 300. So it does happen. As far as going way in the red. That would take a lot, and I do me A LOT rigs to do. Even if the 300mhs goes for over a year after the contract, Im doing very well still.

For life is a lot longer than a year. Once again, if it's at zero cost to me, why would I ever stop running it, even it bitcoin are worth 1/1000th of a penny each? I just don't think you should offer something that you can't feasibly produce. I am not trying to rain on the parade, I'm just saying you should reevaluate your model.

I've done a bit of Googling and it does seem possible to Crossfire a 5970 with a 5850.

Actually, yeah, I am sure you can....they are all 58xx gpus. I know there's trouble with mixing them, but the x9xxs don't really count as they are dual x8xxs.

How can somebody that freely supports the Patriot Act be a darling of the Tea Party?

1699  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6970 + 5850 + 5970 on: August 09, 2011, 05:32:41 AM
Long story short, I got a little over excited on an online auction site and bought an XFX 5970 with an Arctic Accelero Extreme cooler, an XFX 5850 and I also have my existing flashed 6970 2GB.

I bought these extra cards for Bitcoin mining. I don't think my PSU (Corsair TX950) has enough power to run all these cards under full load, so one of them is going to have to go because I can't afford a bigger PSU and my case only supports 1 PSU.

So I was thinking I could sell the 6970, and use the 5970 for mining and gaming and the 5850 only for mining. Or I could use the 5970 for full time mining and the 5850 for gaming, but the 5850 obviously has less power than the 5970. I could then Crossfire the 5970 + 5850 at a later stage if I wanted to.

The only problem with this is that I will still only have 1GB of usable GPU memory instead of the 2GB that I have with my 6970. I only plan on gaming at 1080p, but I think that future games in the next year or so might benefit from more than 1GB GPU memory.

What should I do?!

Can you crossfire a 5970 with a 5850?
