1701  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: betting exchange or regular sports book on: January 23, 2020, 01:10:50 AM
· Firstly on betting exchanges you mostly have better odds than on a regular sports book.

Well, this is often only valid if you disregard the commission you will have to pay on your net profit. If we take a look at the Wolves-Liverpool game, you can back Liverpool for 1.70 at Betfair, which is only a 1.665 after you have paid your commission. Checking some odds comparison services, you can get 1.70 at Expekt or SBO, which are reliable bookmakers, and you don't have to pay any commission.
Same for over 2.5 goals. Back is available at 1.92 (which is 1,874 after commission), but you get 1.91 at Dafabet for example. Now with turning over lots of money, you can lower your commission, but in these mainstream markets with good volume, you will find better odds with bookmakers most of the time, if you put in the work to shop for odds.
The market where you would nearly always find better odds than at bookmakers though, is the correct score markets for example. This is because, the more outcomes, the more edge the bookmakers puts on those odds, to make it easier to balance their book.

· Secondly you do not play against a bookmaker but by having the opportunity to back and lay bets the odds are entirely determined by the punters themselves.

You don't play against the bookmaker when placing your bets with them Wink You always play against your fellow punters. A good bookmaker will balance his book, have his profit no matter the outcome and pay your winnings with the losses of the other punters and vice versa.

· But my main reason I prefer to bet on an exchange is that bookmakers do not limit winning accounts. On a regular sports book it happens
very often that your account gets locked or limited for some shady reasons but actually the real reason is because you are a winning
player and a bookmaker doesn't make money on winning players. This is different by betting on an exchange. Bookmakers that run a
betting exchange welcome winning and high roller players just because of the fact the 'house' takes a small % commission on all winning
bets. So for them it doesn't matter if there are winning players because a betting exchange offers p2p bets and the house takes a
commission. It is exactly the same as for example a crypto exchange where an exchange takes a small fee on your trades.

Technically they don't limit you, but they have some other tricks in place. Some years ago Betfair introduced the so called "premium charge". Betfair was and is still facing the problem, that there is a small percentage of users (the highrolling winners) that take a lot of money out of the system, but don't put anything in. This system only works as long as there is enough fresh money entering the market. So Betfair isn't too happy with people winning loads of money and cashing that out. If you are a very good punter/trader and fulfill some criteria, that are calculated with some sophisticated formula, you would be due some weekly "premium charge" on top of your winnings. This can be up to 60% of your winnings and this is quite a lot.
Most of the punters don't have to fear this premium charge though as only the best of the best match the criteria, but it's something worth to be mentioned or considered.

Unfortunately Betfair is not available in most countries anymore due to regulatory issues and it isn't available in my country as well, which is a pity. You can play at exchanges like Orbit for example, that just mirror the Betfair markets, but these are only available via agents. And they have no API to use trading software.
1702  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The Essential NFL Thread 🏈🏈 - new poll every week on: January 23, 2020, 12:11:07 AM
I dont like the 4th and 15 play.  It can be converted way too much.  A team can be down 21 points with 3 minutes to go and kind of easily tie it.  That rule change penalizes the team that's been kicking ass all game.  I vote no on that one.

Yes, I get your point. It adds some extra nail biting, when you are rooting for a/your team. But otoh, if you dominated for 57 minutes and choke the game away inside 3 minutes, you probably didn't deserve to win. A game is played for 60 minutes and you have to be and stay focused for the entire game. But yes, I would hate seeing my team losing that way too. Betting or trading wise it could give some opportunities though to lay very short odds.
Maybe would make more sense to give each team the possibility to use this rule only once per game.

While we are at it with the rules, there is one thing that always annoys me and needs some overhaul imo. When you have a flag on both sides, these penalties always offset and I think it often makes no sense, to just offset them and move on, if they are a) penalized differently in yardage and/or b) didn't occcur at the same time.

a) Lets say you have a neutral zone infraction by the defense (5 yards) and while the play evolves an offensive holding (10 yards). Penalties will offset, the down is replayed - but there is 5 yards difference with the penalties. So what I would like to see is, that the line of scrimmage is moved 5 yards backwards, because the offense had the bigger penalty.

b) Ball is snapped, an offensive holding takes place and referee throws his flag (10 yards), play continues. QB throws 30 yards down the field to his receiver, who misses the catch, but defensive PI is called (30 yard penalty). Penalties will offset, down is replayed. It isn't taken into account, that without the offensive holding, the pass play wouldn't even have happened probably.
You rarely have fouls happening simultaneously and it is never taken into consideration, that the second penalty maybe wouldn't have happened without the first one.

Changes like that in the enforcement of penalties would most likely only lead to confusion and the refs would have a hard time figuring out certain scenarios, but I think it's kind of unfair, and especially a) wouldn't be so hard to implement.
1703  Local / Presse / Re: Online-Glücksspiele künftig legal (in Deutschland) on: January 22, 2020, 05:08:31 PM

1704  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The Essential NFL Thread 🏈🏈 - new poll every week on: January 22, 2020, 01:14:24 PM
Let's hear some counterpoints on why peeps (if anyone) thinks KC will win.

Since I am a betting person, I always try to find points for both sides. As said above, this one is more or less a coin toss for me (will probably take SF for the poll), but let me try to find some angles for a KC win.

It's obviously difficult to counter the hard facts @DireWolfM14 posted. But KC had the slightly harder strength of schedule and Mahomes was missing a few games. So....

By looking at the stats above one can quickly discern that the 9ers lead in 3 of the four offensive stats, and 3 of the four defensive stats.

....could easily be SF only leading in 1 of four offensive stats, since 2 of those stats are so close (ypg & ppg). You would have a 4-4 tie overall then.

The postseason stats, which is of course a very small sample size, gives SF a 5-3 advantage. Not sure, how it would look like, if you disregard that first quarter in the Texans@Chiefs game, where KC just came out rusty and flat - outscoring them 51-7 afterwards, being 0-24 down early in Q2.

So, yes, the hard facts point to a SF win. Lets look at some soft facts.

KC has the coaching advantage. Without trying to sound disrespectful, Andy Reid is a poor mans version of Bill Belichick for me. A very experienced coach, an offensive mastermind who probably has seen it all. Kyle Shanahan is still a young coach and there is not many coaches around 40 years of age, that managed to win the SB. His father could give him some valuable advice, but he is not around on the sidelines during the game Wink

The 49ers weren't really tested yet. They have been so dominant, that they didn't have to show their best yet. This could be a good thing, but also a bad thing. Especially their passing game could be a bit rusty, after having been so good on the ground and only using pass plays every now and then to keep defenses honest. We could see this backfiring on them, if they have to rely on the passing game being down late-ish in the game. An offense always has to click and I am not sure, if the passing game of SF is clicking with being put on pause for so long.

KC was able to limit Derrick Henry and the Titans run game to 85 yards. They will probably be able to limit SF's running game too, despite not having a good run D on paper. Steve Spagnuolo has shown in SB XLII what his defenses can do.

In the end I would think this game is all about the SF offense vs. KC defense matchup. I expect the KC offense to show up and the SF defense will have their hands full then (see the SF@NO game). If the SF offense is not showing up, they might be in trouble, because KC will score rather a lot me thinks.

So far for some pro KC points that could be made. I hope and think it will be one hell of a game and I can't wait.
1705  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The Essential NFL Thread 🏈🏈 - new poll every week on: January 22, 2020, 12:05:42 AM
I think the odds for Superbowl are set about right. Will be decided by a few details (penalties, TO, broken coverage) and whatever team is showing up more; hard to tell who that will be. Keeping my fingers crossed for the 49ers, allthough I could live with the Chiefs as well, since I would be happy for Andy Reid to finally get his well deserved ring.

Just read that their will be some tests of potential rule changes at the ProBowl and one of them gets me excited to some extent:

Quote
The scoring team, Team A, will have the following options:

1. Team A may elect to give Team B the ball at Team B's 25-yard line, beginning a new series of downs with a first-and-10.

2. Team A may elect to take the ball at its own 25-yard line for a fourth-and-15 play. If Team A is successful in making a first down, Team A will maintain possession and a new series of downs will continue as normal. If Team A is unsuccessful in making a first down, the result will be a turnover on downs and Team B will take possession at the dead-ball spot.

Source: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001098234/article/nfl-to-test-out-two-potential-rule-changes-in-pro-bowl

This could make for some nice drama Grin With the rule changes, the percentage of successful onside kicks has dropped to <10% and I would think that a 4th&15 has higher chances of being converted succesfully. Field-position wise, after converting that 4th&15, you should start somewhere there, where a succesful onside kick would let you start too - or even better. What do you guys think about that ?

1707  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Germany League - Bundesliga Prediction Thread on: January 21, 2020, 11:50:58 AM
What Dortmund has been missing for a long time, is some presence in the box and Haaland gives them just that. Götze and Alcacer are shortish players with both being just around 1,75m tall. So Dortmund was always forced to maneuver their way into the box with short passes and find an open man there (just like Barca has to do all the time). Putting high balls into the box was just pointless, because all those short players just had no chance against all those 1,90m defenders playing in Bundesliga. So imo Halaand is one hell of a fit for Dortmund. Opponents have to be more aware with high balls now and that norwegian dude can play some football too.

As for Mönchengladbach, I am pretty sure they will struggle mightily to even get a spot in Europa League. They are bunch of softies and lack that winning mentality. I expect Leipzig, Bayern, Dortmund, Schalke and Leverkusen to finish ahead of them and then it remains to be seen what teams like Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and maybe Frankfurt can do.

At the moment I have 12 and I'm just waiting for the Real Madrid-Parma match to end, which is currently still Draw.

I don't know how the Chiefs managed to get that lead at half time, but they did. It somehow felt that the Titans controlled most of the first 30 minutes (they had some lucky breaks with penalties tbf), but the Chiefs did what the Chiefs do - make scoring look effortless.

Titans look in big trouble now and I fear we might see a very one-sided second half with the Chiefs running away with the score.

1718  Other / Meta / Re: [Discussion] A Bug in Bounty Campaigns – Subconscious Perception on: January 19, 2020, 07:05:20 PM
I think the word you're looking for is subconscious, not unconscious.

Hehe, yes, thanks Smiley Being not native in english, I thought unconscious would do the trick as well, but subconscious is indeed the better wording.

With the post of LoyceV as an example you don't get to see the signature at all right form the start
That's true. But check my next post in that topic: it's much smaller, which makes the signature more prominent. But when I create a topic like that, I don't do it for my signature, although I'm pretty sure the signature under my OP gets more exposure than many of my other posts, because that topic gets read more often. Check for instance how many people merited it.

Yes, sure, I just took your post as kind of random example to visualize what I mean.
But you being forced to wear a CM avatar as well, would give them additional recognition no matter how long or short your post is. And I am wondering, why companies give away some extra visibility so easily (or only pay very few for it), since not being able to wear a personal/private avatar wouldn't be a huge turnoff to join a campaign for most of the people (I guess).

That might be a good suggestion for future bounty campaigns but avatars is not enough for over-all marketing, they might be good for branding, but can't be metered by some analytical tools since ads are for marketing purposes it's way more easy to use a signature with URL to measure and/or manage their marketing performance here in the forum for which help them to act their next step, to continue or to stop the campaign.
The reason is quite simple: you can add a link to your signature, but you can't click the avatar.

Thats a valid point you both made and which I hadn't in mind.
And I still think that an avatar gets more attention than a signature does. If you see loads of people running around with the same avatar, you probably get people curious and make them google for it. So imo you have the situation non-clickable avatar with lots of attention versus clickable signature with lower attention than avatar (where you can measure engagements though). I think there is some disbalance in payments, because all things considered, these two are closer than one might think.
But as I said, this is more a psychological and marketing consideration, which some bounty managers might have a look into.

Maybe that's why campaigns require to wear besides the signature also their personal text and avatar... To make sure it is very visible...?

Not all campaigns do. There is also a lot of them, where you are not forced to wear their avatar or have some text.
1719  Other / Meta / [Discussion] A Bug in Bounty Campaigns – Subconscious Perception on: January 19, 2020, 03:37:18 PM
Not sure, if this thread fits in here, so the mods can feel free to move it to a more appropriate board (Marketplace ? Services ?).

I noticed that I pay way more (subconscious) attention to avatars than I actually do to signatures. Thinking about the why, I figured out that is has to do with the sequence of eye movement and the ability of peripheral vision when reading a post or going through a thread.

Most posts are left-aligned and not centered, apart from posts in Arabic or Hebrew language of course, so you start reading a post somewhere here normally:

From there the distance to the avatar is pretty short and you will inevitably pay some attention to it by peripheral vision. You often curiously check the author of the post (at least I do) and that will put your attention to the avatar again. Now with most of the people reading from left to right and every sentence/paragraph starting at the left again, you kind of get redirected to the avatar multiple times. Check the difference for a post read from right to left, most of the attention stays right hand:

Signatures are mostly always centered under your post, so there is not a lot of natural behaviour to bring your attention to it. When scrolling through a thread, your focus always lies on the left-ish side of the thread as you want to see where a new post starts and who wrote it.

With the post of LoyceV as an example you don't get to see the signature at all right form the start (at least on my screen); the avatar you see right away; also because it's kind of shiny compared to the other things you recognize. Add to that, that most people don't bother to read walls of text until the end and stop somewhere in the middle or scroll to the next post, it is the avatar that gets more attention than the signature.

An avatar has a lot of recognition value imo. Users that have the same avatar for ages, you can just identify by that without looking at the nick. In the threads I visit/post the most, there is a whole armada of users wearing a Sportsbet avatar and I always have trouble to distinguish between them, but I always notice their avatars and have to look at their nicks to distinguish. Or look at all the users wearing their beloved hats as avatar.

Now what is the point of all this ? It's maybe more some psychological and/or marketing topic. But with the observations of my own behaviour, I find it kind of odd that bounty campaigns pay good money for wearing a signature, but only some tip for wearing the respective avatar – if that is paid at all. And with everything being so sophisticated nowadays, the companies advertising and promoting via bounty campaigns in here, are missing out on a lot of recognition and optimizing their visibility by not using the option of a) forcing the users to wear their avatar and b) not paying equal money compared to the signature for wearing their avatar. I could even think of avatar-only bounty campaigns, which have been here in the past every now and then, but I haven't seen any for a long time.

So this is maybe just some food for thought for the bounty managers in here, but these campaigns also give some value to bitcointalk - like it or not.

What catches your (subconscious) attention when reading a post ?
