17541  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $100,000,000,000 Market Capitalisation. on: June 06, 2017, 08:12:55 AM
for the 100,000,000,000th time, nobody cares about the total market capitalization!

altcoins can easily make billions of coin out of thin air and with 0.00000001 price or ever less (yes there are a lot of them worth half a satoshi or 1/100 of a satoshi) and make this total market cap grow out of proportion, just like what your beloved ethereum does Wink
17542  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: fees and small transactions ?? on: June 06, 2017, 07:44:49 AM
from last month Coinbase stopped paying the fees for users' transactions that are on-chain and they now charge a fee.[1] however it sounds very strange that they have charged such a big fee for your transaction (0.011BTC) the normal transaction fees that they should take shouldn't be anything bigger than 0.001BTC!
There is nothing strange in them charging a higher fees because things have changed drastically and if you really want to get your transactions through within five hours you should pay higher fees and coinbase is not gaining anything with the transaction fees they are charging, but i am not sure whether they are charging 0.011 btc, because the last time i used they were charging around 0.0024 btc so i have to start using light weight wallet for my transactions.

charging a higher fees is not strange, charging an extremely higher fees (12+ times higher) is strange. and please have in mind that Coinbase is not a regular wallet to receive transactions in one key and spend them from the same key. they pay you from their reserves and if the transaction they sent was big, it is their fault not yours.
17543  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What exchange to do trading? on: June 06, 2017, 07:34:17 AM
(you really need to work on your way of asking questions, it is way too long!)
1. shapeshift is reputable but you can't buy with fiat. it is crypto to crypto exchange. for fees just check the website!

2. i don't quite understand what you thought process on this is! you are making a lot of calculation errors and making assumptions that bitcoin price is lower when you buy ($800 lower) but ETH price is much higher (about $80) when you buy that doesn't make any sense.
and for the fees again you have to check the exchange fee page to know how much they are. trading fees are using 0.15% to 0.25%

3. bittrex doesn't accept fiat deposits they don't even have any market for it. you should use Kraken. or coinbase.
and it is none of my business but i wouldn't invest that much money in ethereum at this point unless you are ready to lose a big chunk of it.

4. i haven't really used any of these to know. but most of the time it is not more than a couple of days and also what takes long is the verification process where you submit your documents and they verify your accounts.

5. as far as taxes go, you have to report it yourself. i don't think the exchanges do report any activities but they may because they are in US and follow the AML, KYC rules. also consult a professional about this not random people on the internet.

6. you either go on a centralized platform like exchanges to trade or do it peer 2 peer. something like localbitcoins for example.

7. the price differences have many different reasons, mostly because in one place there aren't enough sells for example then price goes higher because of increasing demand or usually because the fiat deposits are costlier in one place so people don't deposit money that much there. but in the end they will all get balanced.

8. yes because localbitcoins sellers usually use other methods and since it is a more private kind of trading the prices are usually higher.
17544  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC near $3k on: June 06, 2017, 07:19:54 AM
I think this is the ATH.  Shocked And this is awesome. Many business are leaning towards blockchain technology.
Does the price of bitcoin rise because the business around the world are leaning towards blockchain technology i really doubt it,blockchain technology and bitcoin are entire different,we are seeing more investment in bitcoin as so is the reason the price is rising.

i agree. but remember that when a lot of talk is happening all over the media about blockchain technology it will always mention bitcoin as the one thing that is successfully using this technology so it attracts a lot of attention. it is like free advertising!
and obviously the price rise also brings a lot of attention to it. when they say blockchain technology then say bitcoin is using it and its price is rising, many will cone towards bitcoin.
not to mention all the tides that were changed in favor of bitcoin when Japan regulated bitcoin.
17545  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is causing the Bitcoin bubble? on: June 06, 2017, 07:07:47 AM
I have seen people here deny that this is a bubble. Have we not learned from the bubbles of the past? In every rise there will always be a fall as was with the Tulip Mania, and this could be the Tulip Mania of our time.

I know Bitcoin gives the world some utility but surely this rise is pumped by the irrationality of people thanks to FOMO.

claiming it is a bubble without any rational discussion and purely because price has gone up doesn't make any sense.
if it is a bubble then what do you call all those dips, small dips and bigger dips all the way up?
have you forgotten that price dropped hard not so long ago from ~$2700  to below $2000? then what was that if not a correction?

17547  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Commission for sending 1 btc now? on: June 05, 2017, 04:47:25 AM
when sending bitcoin you pay for the space not amount you transfer.
the space is the space your transaction takes up in the bitcoin blocks, which is shown as your transaction size. in normal usage of bitcoin your transaction size should be about 226 bytes and the cost of it will be about 80K satoshi at most (these days irregardless of what websites like https://bitcoinfees.21.co/ say even a 100 s/b transactions will get a fast confirmation but it is best if you pay a higher fee if you want a fast transaction).

in other words it doesn't matter if you are sending 1BTC or 16,000,000BTC you still pay the same amount of fee based on the size in bytes.
17548  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction Fees and Segwit on: June 05, 2017, 04:40:06 AM
~
CORRECTION: My fee was $60USD!!! That's more than 10% of the amount I was trying to transact. Surely there is something I can do to prevent this. Does it depend on when I send it?

you either paid an extremely high transaction fee by mistake or your transaction size was huge. depending on how much fee/byte you chose it could have been a size around 7-8 kilobytes to 20 kilobytes and that is why your fees are high like this.

you possibly had a tx like this:
https://blockchain.info/tx/cf88ea8d8ec3a27d327c3b13dfcbfd9bb8929511a3c0717eadd606195e597d00?show_adv=true

and just FYI the same transaction in ethereum network would have cost a high fee too. a normal transaction fees have grown a lot in the previous months and you would have probably be forced to pay $30 or so in ethereum.
also eth has a lot of problems in scaling, which are much worse than bitcoin. because eth is not a currency and was never supposed to be and all the smart contracts on it will clog up the network if it gets anywhere near big.

if fees are your concern and you want a secure blockchain then use Dogecoin!! why even bother with ethereum? Doge fee is 1 Doge per tx which is ~$0.0025.
17549  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Question about electrum's private key on: June 05, 2017, 04:17:30 AM
all you need to do is to back up that Seed words.
from menu click "Wallet > Seed" then enter your password and write the seed down on a piece of paper. that is all you need to recover all the 26 or so and more future addresses that the wallet generates for you.

All I need is the seed words, not the wallet file that goes with it? I thought the file was like a safe box and the password (or seed) was the key to open the safe.

the wallet file is for usage on a computer, for example when you want to open it and see the addresses and sign a transaction offline. the seed is like an ultimate cold backup if you write/print it on a paper. and the password that you set is like the key to open the safe, the seed is for recovering what is in the safe (which is your private keys)

you can still back up your wallet file too. it actually is a good idea to have that backup in case your paper was lost, damaged,... so you have another safety net.
17550  Economy / Speculation / Re: Speculating the benefits of swicthing over to base unit as satoshi on: June 05, 2017, 04:07:42 AM
i think it is a good idea. even if the switch doesn't happen right away, if people start using the smaller units or generally if they are there so they can see them, it will be a lot better.

and also not to mention all the confusion that a large number of newcomers have about the price when they say "we can't afford buying 1 whole bitcoin" that way they can see it is possible to buy a million satoshi for example.
17551  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How safe is a flashdrive? on: June 05, 2017, 04:00:28 AM
Quote
If you desperately want to use SD Cards or USB drives/flash drives go out and by three high quality ones

The smartest thing i have heard today. I recommend the same approach, but instead of flash drive can be used quality CD+R disk. You can add information to it, with no afraid to erase previous session.

How long will a CR+R disk last compared to a flashdrive?

A CD will probably last more, i have a Bach Concert cd from 87' and it still works  Cheesy

it depends on the quality of that disk too. i have a bunch of CDs that had some valuable stuff on them and i don't know if they were shitty Chinese product or what but they stopped working after a couple of months!
it is always best to keep additional backups from a sensitive information like private keys which are holding your money!

p.s. your CD is as old as me Grin
17552  Economy / Exchanges / Re: What is the best exchange to use in 2017 on: June 05, 2017, 03:54:32 AM
for altcoin trading i suggest bittrex.
most users are using poloniex but they do it just because it is on the top of the list regarding highest volume but the services are not that great (apart from their API). and they have a lot of problems.

also click on the move button at the bottom of this page and move your topic to the "Exchanges" board
17553  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Petition to get Amazon to accept bitcoin as payment method (sign and share) on: June 04, 2017, 03:55:02 PM
for years people said we want places like Amazon to start accepting bitcoin as a payment.
and today i finally saw someone doing something about it (maybe there were others but i am not aware of any).

so if you want it go here and sign and share this where you can, it is a petition to get Amazon to add bitcoin and litecoin:

17554  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: transfer ltc to mBTC with electrum stuck on: June 04, 2017, 03:46:40 PM
i did some research but all i can find is people making the same mistake by sending to an address that belongs to an exchange wallet, and the service fixes it for them. i can't find anything on "how" and as i said i am not familiar with how multisignature works.

example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1242768.msg13008282#msg13008282

Wow I didn't know you could send ltc to a bitcoin multisig address.

newinbitcoins what type of wallet is your btc wallet? What does it say in the electrum btc window title bar?

apparently they moved to a version bit 50 (?) or M prefix recently

17556  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: My first day of trading on: June 04, 2017, 05:02:21 AM
~Today I saw that ~~~ was above 10% and volume was above 10,000.  It was also very active pumping up and down.  I did four buy and sell trades, not aiming for much more than 5% profit on each one and increased my $75.00 to $91.00.  ~

this is exactly what i do most of the times Cool
the days that i have time i look for some altcoin no matter what its name is and if it is getting pumped and also if it is in its early stage of the pump i join in and dump it after a small profit, usually it is 5% to 10% but depending on the strength of the pump and if i know something more than just what i see on the charts then i aim for a bigger profit.
and even if price continues going higher after the dip you can always join in again.
17557  Economy / Economics / Re: Is the SEC retarding innovation and progress in the USA by opposing the BTC ETF on: June 04, 2017, 04:57:35 AM
https://www.sec.gov/Article/whatwedo.html

The mission of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation.

The SEC's primary objective is to protect investors. I think that is the reason why market commentators seemed to be confident that the Bitcoin ETF would be rejected. Innovation? Not their job!

that kinda makes half sense! mainly because all other countries are doing something similar, they protect the investors and warn them but also they allow them to trade bitcoin easier by regulating it. look at Japan for example. their biggest Forex broker which is incidentally the biggest in the whole world regarding volume, just added a new bitcoin exchange platform!
17558  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: transfer ltc to mBTC with electrum stuck on: June 04, 2017, 04:22:21 AM
i'm afraid your funds may have been lost (although there may be a way of recovering them which i will explain at the end).

Bitcoin and Litecoin are two different cryptocurrencies which means they are running on completely separate networks. sending coins on one chain (LTC chain) doesn't mean your coins will go to another chain (BTC chain).
if you want to sent LTC to BTC you need to convert LTC to BTC or in other words sell LTC to get BTC on an exchange website.

if you search a bitcoin block explorer you can see that your transaction does not exist there because of what i said. but if you check an LTC block explorer you can see the transaction:
https://live.blockcypher.com/ltc/tx/32b8633dcf7aca4cc622429fc36b7871902659fe98524762beadb3c6d043e5ac/

the way to recover can be this:
i am assuming you have the bitcoin address and its private keys.
you need to take that private key and convert it to litecoin private key (these two crypto currencies are very similar so you are lucky there). and then import that private key into your electrum-ltc wallet and recover the funds.

if the 35ALptqe.... is the address i'm afraid i am not familiar with multisig keys but maybe someone else can help you.
17559  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Question about electrum's private key on: June 04, 2017, 04:12:17 AM
wallets such as electum are called HD wallets which means they generate something called a master private key which you may know as Seed words. then they generate all your other private keys (all those bitcoin addresses you see in the addresses tab [press Ctrl+a]) from that master private key.

all you need to do is to back up that Seed words.
from menu click "Wallet > Seed" then enter your password and write the seed down on a piece of paper. that is all you need to recover all the 26 or so and more future addresses that the wallet generates for you.
