17661  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: New buildout with buysolar has entered stage 2. on: February 19, 2019, 10:37:14 PM
Pricing is always complex.

A lot depends on your power cap  and on power efficiency.

Until today  the m10 was the best unit in the USA

Now a t15 with a  340 coupon is a better deal .

but the 340 coupons are wait til the 26th

by the 26th maybe the m10 drops to 500

Also if the s15 at 1020-340 = 680 + 100 to ship is invoiced at 680 + 100 = 780 no tax

if it is invoiced at 1020-340 = 680 + 100 shipping = 780  plus tax of 27.6% on the 1020 price  that is a tax of 281  so 780 + 281 = 1061

so as of today  for a USA guy

the s15 is 1061 or 780 if you order one
the t15 is  470 if you order one

and it is not exactly correct since you can not order until feb 26th.

also the  order 1 per day to save the tax while true  can end up being wrong if they jam up in customs and  you feb 26 feb 27 feb 28 ordered hit the usa on march 1  usa can say you ordered 3 in 1 day we tax your ass.

So when I do order:
I will order 1 sent to my home
buysolar will order 1 sent to his home

we will then order again when they arrive at our homes
I will order 1 T15
buysolar will order 1 S15

if that s15 is written correctly to legally avoid the trump tax
we can order 1 S15 each for the next order.

a PITA  but we would legally avoid about 800-1000 in tax this way
17662  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Any suggestions or experiences on using a voltage stabilizer/regulator on: February 19, 2019, 10:14:44 PM
@ op  I have 1 stabilizer   was not cheap it was rated to run 2 s15's

it does keep volts at 220  with 228 to 246 in it is really close to 220 out.

it was poorly wired and will never run 2 s15's

it runs 1 s15 fine but cost was about 180 Usd maybe 162 with a coupon

a link

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Norstar-5000-Watt-Step-UP-and-Down-Voltatge-Regulator-Transformer-Converter/332955089461?

since the unit works for 1 s15 well I found this one price was 121 with an offer
it claims to do 4000 watts which would be 2 s15's
it has not arrived.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Norstar-4000-Watt-Step-Up-and-Down-Voltage-Transformer-with-Voltage-Regulator/332607784072?

if it is better built and does 2 s15's correctly it would only be about 61 or 62 an s15

that would be ballpark okay if you have power doing 243 to 252 a lot.

unit comes tomorrow.

Now only 2 or 3 psu's on s15's have been reported to die on this website.
assuming they are true reports the input volts were 243-246 for sure maybe higher.

this is a very small data sample.

I am far more certain that the power protection unit with the lcd screen won't do 2 s15's
since 14 gauge wire is not good enough to do over 3000 watts

I am less then certain that s15 psu's blowup and die in the 243-245 volt range.

I will post info on the new protection unit here tomorrow .

but dust humidity and of course room temps are more critical then power exactly 220 volts

in a world of perfection.

the mine would be solar and wind powered at 1 cent a kwatt
dust filter
fan cooled to 25c or 77f
humidity at 35%

stable power to psu at 220 volts
psu supplying a constant correct dc value
psu under a 50-60% load
ac under a constant 75% load
all wires one gauge better than needed.

all of the above at cheap cost.

but world is not perfect.
so all of the above needs to be selected to get best results at best price.

paying 60 dollars to protect one s15 psu is at best an okay choice

I rather pay 60 dollars to keep 5 s15's at a good temperature range
or pay 60 dollars to manage the dust for 10 s15's
or pay 60 dollars to manage the humidity for 3 s15's
17663  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Any suggestions or experiences on using a voltage stabilizer/regulator on: February 19, 2019, 09:32:42 PM
The suggestion is dont waste the money because it will do nothing for you.

The PSU IS the voltage regulator for the miner. That is why they have a variable input range but always output a stable voltage. Whether you feed a PSU 210v or 240v, the DC output will still be the same.

You should double and triple check what you hear, especially on the internet, because whoever told you that is pretty clueless.

What kills ASICs is poor environmental management 99 times out of 100

dust and humidity are more damaging then voltage issues.

I meant to ask  are you running a lot of s15's or mostly m10's

We had the one report of some dead s15 psu's running in the 240-245 volt range

2 maybe 3 on this site.
I am mostly m10's myself no psu issues.

I know you run lots of gear I wondered if you have tested enough s15's to form an opinion on them.
17664  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 09:24:37 PM
okay we (not me but some bitcointalk members) have had a few psu's die on 240 volt setups and not on the 220 volt setup's

I ran a thread for reports on the s15's reliability and only 2 maybe 3 psu's died.

I found this item which should do 2 s15's safely  as it really does keep volts very close to 220volts.

but it is woefully wired (14 gauge) and I can only recommend running 1 s15.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Norstar-5000-Watt-Step-UP-and-Down-Voltatge-Regulator-Transformer-Converter/332955089461?

I ordered this one which may also do only 1 s15 but is cheaper

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Norstar-4000-Watt-Step-Up-and-Down-Voltage-Transformer-with-Voltage-Regulator/332607784072?

my hope would be it has 12 gauge wires and can really do 2 s15's  if it can do that it would be decent gear.

17666  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 04:20:07 PM
De minimis is based on the Invoice value. Since coupons are directly reflected in the final total value on the invoices they can easily put you under de minimis but -- remember that you MUST be under the $800 mark PER-DAY - NOT just per-order! IF you have 2 or more orders from the same company that are cleared by US customs on the same day and they total over $800 you will be screwed.

this is why I ordered all my m10's 1 at a time and waited until it was in my house for the next order.

As for s15 becoming a de minimis  using a 340 coupon I don't know if that will be true.

seems like it  1020 - 340 = 680 plus shipping

I simply do not know how bitmain will write up the invoice.

using a 340 coupon the t15 is  710-340 = 370 plus shipping

using a 240 coupon the s11 is 512-240 = 270 plus shipping

since all psu's are the same looks like buying a s11 for 270 could be a smart move.

my coupons are good in 7 days I will be buying some gear from them.
17667  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 04:01:22 PM
Sidehack I was not going to buy another s11 or s15 or t15.

I got 18 x 340 coupons
I got 18 x 250 coupons
I got 18 x 190 coupons

I will get a s11 and a t15.  For testing.

If my one s15 psu dies I can use the psu from the s11

I wonder if this variance was their need to sell a different model to begin with with the 31T version.

I have 2 33th models
I have 5 31th models

Everyone does more then  the number it is rated to do. Except this one it is a fraction low.

30.8
17669  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: New buildout with buysolar has entered stage 2. on: February 19, 2019, 02:44:15 PM
I guess they read this Grin

I was up really late last night opened my emails just now and  saw the notices.

So some s15's or t15's will be purchased very soon.

I don't have a t15.

so 710 -340 = 370 + 110 = 480

a no tax order since the base 710 is under the 799

480 for the t15 is really good price.

I asked mods to move this to alt coin section.

The rasp pi 0 is old.

I see you banging your head hard on a wall.

WiFi sucks in many cases.

So you may have a perfect setup and simply have WiFi interferences.

Can you make it work with an ETH cable just to test?
17671  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Why are profits so low? on: February 19, 2019, 05:02:39 AM
Making a profit into mining nowadays is impossible because even the numbers of miners subsided but still the level of difficulty is still high and getting a break-even to the costs of mining is so impossible based on the latest rates so it's obvious that mining is a pure investment that needs perseverance.

To those miners that still mining right now would definitely earn their fruits of labor.

See people spit out this same old crap about getting into it. Just because you are a solo user with no access to capital or skilled labor, does NOT mean its impossible. Just that its impossible from your tiny world view.

Heres a little secret: Since the beginning, to make a profit you have to expand your operation. You either expand or die, thats never changed. What changed is the mindset of people who entered the game during the crazy price run of 2017 and expected the outrageous profits to continue forever.
I'm speaking on behalf of small-scale miners just like the OP, I assumed and not to the miners in the whole world especially those with mining farms. I'm saying this now because it's the reality and currently happening right now, if you have a big world view then good for you but do you have any rigs and did some expansion before? if you don't mind me asking.

I was 1 gpu grew to 80 1080tis and I did contraction in Jan 2018. I went to cash and began attempted to get cheap power deals.  I know have 4 power deals  and I am expanding >  I am burning about 75kwatts  right now which is the most power I have ever used .  hoping to go to 125kwatt by end of year.

I don't know how small fanatic_26 ever was but I was small and I no longer think I am small.

still tiny compared to a 40 megawatt farm but growth is in the works.
17672  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 04:53:57 AM
I am not in the U.S so tax is not a problem at all, however i was planning to grab some S9s but after seeing this i really need to do more calculations, once these s17 hit the market, price for everything else will likely drop, i will probably be able to get used S9 for like 100$ instead of 140-160$ from China if not less.

but again the price for the S17 will be key , also should the bull run kick in a bit early "unlikely" every miner on plant will rise in price, so it's really a though decision that requires a good sleep and a cup of coffee.

my s15 has worked well so I am not sure what I am going to do now.

more s9's are out

m10's are now in a maybe stage.

Well if we do more build outs I will order something. Right now I think I need to push pause for a little bit.

I initially ran into that as well with my 2nd one but like yours, after a good warmup all 3 boards came to life and have been doing just fine for over 5 days now.

The autotune does set different speeds as needed for the boards and interestingly, the board that initially did not show up runs at a lower speed than the other 2 boards do: Hmm, just looked and checking the 2, my 1st one all three boards are centered around 500MHz +/- 4, number-2 oth are all over the map! 499, 468 and 562MHz... Definitely some variation in chips there... Wink Still, considering it holds a steady 31.6THs - werks fer me! Cheesy

Yeah today’s is say 470 560 470

17676  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 01:40:50 AM
My s15 does 27th at 1555 watts using a regulated 220 volt transformer.

So same psu pulling 1555 watts say 36 a th = damn!

The idea of ordering in two months and getting it in four months has me thinking I can not upgrade to m10s.

But the freaking trump tax is a mofo.
17677  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 12:35:39 AM
What did they announce the 7nm first chip to be IIRC 37 per th.

Or is that a bad fact?

if it is 30 watts a th  and was 37 watts a th  it is only 19%

or was it 42 watts a th for the first 7nm they announced?

anyone have a link or screen shot?

also when did they announce first chip?
17678  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: PPS pools what is proper reserve number for a pps pool? on: February 19, 2019, 12:27:08 AM
This is the best reason not to mine on a pps pool that is over paying.  Better then Phil or Kano

I gave this a few merits and with this idea by DaveF  I will close the thread as it is a better reason than any that I gave Grin
17679  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: PPS pools what is proper reserve number for a pps pool? on: February 19, 2019, 12:07:08 AM
size of pool does matter according to the developer of the reserve formula.

meni says bigger pool = bigger variance risk
..

simple enough not to argue with kano about it anymore and once again i did not mean to say you were attempting to mislead people with application of the formula deliberately .

facts are  very simple here.
the formula is a base number subject to multiple linear factors.

a 1 ph pool  in the case of a 42,000 ph network  will lose money slower then a 10 ph pool

so at  current difficulty
1   ph ---------    needs to pay out at    0.04148 btc a day
10 ph ---------    needs to pay out at    0.41480 btc a day
100 ph--------    needs to pay out at    4.14800 btc a day
1000 ph-------   needs to pay out at   41.48000 btc a day
10000 ph------   needs to pay out at 414.48000 btc a day

the formula still reads  a reserve of 4000 coins for all of the above

but as meni said in his article the larger the pool the more variance risk the pool operator takes on.

ie he can lose his reserve of coins faster if he has 20 percent of the network.
then is he has 0.01 percent of the network.

as day says  1 hour payout 1 day payout 1 week payout matter

as does full transparency of the pools hash rate.
and of course actual reserve number and who holds it.

Sometimes I don't like the internet due to the difficulty one may have in explaining what one means.
a flat in the USA ALMOST NEVER MEANS AN APARTMENT.
it means your tire has lost its air.

Also english can be ambiguous in other ways.

I would never mine in a pps pool that only takes the x fees as its fees today.

But in 2017  a pps pool doing that was pretty safe from going bankrupt because tx fees were about 1.4 btc  so 1.4/13.9 = about a 10% fee.

Lots of miners out there but take a 1ph guy that has paid up s9i's set at 80 watts a th.

if he has 6 cent power and mines at a tx fee pool only  he earns a about 49.78 usd a day in btc.

this pool charging only tx fee and paying the 12.5 btc every day looks very good to that miner.

so he want to know what chance do I have of the pool tapping out.  he plugs in the formula and gets 4000 coins and says to himself damn no pool op will hold that much and moves on.

A miner that under stands game theory says  if I mine here and get paid 49.78 a day

and if I was mining at viabtc getting only 48.2866 a day  I gain $1.49 a day

if he goes broke since  he pays daily  I lose what I would have got at viabtc 48.2866

so I need to hope that this pool sticks around for 48.2866/1.49 =  32.4 days  and if I do  I win.

the reserve need for a terrible losing streak causing the pool the quit in under 33 days is what?

depends on pool size 1ph or 10ph  size pool he may stick around even with a small reserve.

10,000 ph pool that big reserve is needed.

AS A miner that now is doing multiple joint ventures in solar arrays I can't take excess risk.

I have buysolar myself on one venture
I have buysolar myself a warehouse owner  his son on another venture.
we are soon to do another solar array joint venture.

So pps pools must be what I do.  with most of the hash power .

I won't use a tx fee only pool as I believe it will fail with the current rate a tx fee pool really is 1%

lots of reasons for me to not mine on one and mine on a pool like viabtc.com via pps

as for 5n I mine some private hash on ckpool
I also mine on mmpool using a system design by meni rosenfeld.  but that hash is trivial and is exclusively mine.

As much as I want all of the hash I manage on a pool using 5n I can't and I must decide which pps pool works for my multiple partners.

if you look at viabtc  they are 3% + tx fee  or about 4%  they pay daily so I simply do not fear bankruptcy and just look towards steady payments.

In hard times like now I put some of the profit to regular pools

here I am on mmpool
