Incidentally, who wants to wager if or when Casascius will be Bitcoin's Bernard von Nothaus?

Thinking of how to word it, and guessing what dates to use:

i will. 100 BTC.  i say he won't be attacked.  one year period.

there's just so many things:

1.  allows micropayments to budding musicians, artists, bloggers, journalists, and developers.
2.  allows movement of large amounts of money across borders seamlessly.
3.  instantaneous payments across the globe.
4.  could be used as a reserve currency for instant balance of payments btwn nations.
5.  could be used as a Bitcoin Standard upon which fractional reserve banking could continue in USD's.
6.  smartphone money for P2P payments for everything.
7.  smartphone money in developing nations as in M Pesa in Kenya.

what are these things made of again?
17844  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold: I smell a trap on: September 06, 2011, 08:56:58 PM

It's arguable that this is less to save the USD than to save the existing world financial system of which the dollar happens to be the most fragile component.

being the worlds reserve currency, the USD is the existing world financial system.  i think the stick save will be made.

today was a major, major move in the USD which i've been warning about.  looks like that small declining wedge i saw was real.  you also see it in all the currency crosses as well.  if we break up and out of the consolidation triangle above 76.24, as i suspect we'll see, you'd better duck.

Did that really say anything other than "silver is going to be extremely volatile"?

i'd suggest you read it again.

Phinnaeus Gage: He's much less crazy than Bitrebel.  Grin

Thank you, NF6X. BTW, I've almost completed the Freddy Mercury connection. Just a tad more poking.

has anyone told you you talk cryptically?  why don't you just come out and say what you mean in plain English?  and what does NPR have to do with this?
17851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOWTO create a bootable usb Bitcoin wallet in 4 easy steps on: September 06, 2011, 06:33:07 PM
That's all good and nice. But if it can't be examined openly to make sure there are no back doors, it doesn't matter if it is used for 1 day or 10 years... the option is there that an unknown installed program that cannot be examined could copy and send off wallet.dat files or keys.

It most likely does not.  I am not saying it does.   I'm just asking if there is some way of having CERTAINTY.. not just...
"nothing bad has happened yet"

Before the MtGox disaster, you could use the same logic to say "MtGox is perfectly safe, because people have been using it and no one has complained."

fair point.  why don't you ask him to open up the code?
17852  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOWTO create a bootable usb Bitcoin wallet in 4 easy steps on: September 06, 2011, 06:14:41 PM
Oh great.  More worries.  Is there not a way to check this? Can someone not open this up and check the code to make sure there are no backdoors sending wallet keys to the maker?

LinuxCoin was created by drG33n and Im sure hell come here to solve any doubts you have. The official thread is here and so far is widely used and no one has complained.

Oh....! OH!   drG33n!!!!  What was I thinking!?  Thank God!  Now I know it's secure.  Now my mom and sister and family feel safe buying bitcoins and using this client! For a second there I thought it might have been written been J3lllE_Nz or smAH{{yfheeTz  or  Wyh0reMAHZMAHZpwnzCR@KzzR00K

Thanks god we have that solved and know for sure it's safe now written by drG33n.

(sarcasm note)

I'm just being funny no offense to drG33n, this is not a troll.  He put some work into what appears to be a great tool, but seriously for those not in the linux ubuntu scene is this thing open source and checkable by others?

look at what hugolp said.  go to that thread and look at the tons of ppl who've been using it for a long time.  no one has complained.

massive USD/CHF move of 9.53%

17854  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold: I smell a trap on: September 06, 2011, 05:17:26 PM
Seems people are deciding gold needs a correction now, never mind the many factors which you would think should delay such a correction. I'm still surprised the news about the swiss franc had such a counter intuitive effect.

think of it this way.  the CHF selloff is strengthening the USD.  if one were conspiratorial one would think they're trying to save the USD. Shocked
17855  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Concerns about the fluctuation, even dramatic, of the price of Bitcoin... on: September 06, 2011, 04:32:00 PM
Money is a false incentive.

Exactly. I am a developer. Money is not the issue.

I've started a big project, now it is on hold for several month already.

Reasons? Total mess and lack of clear leadership of BitCoin (not that I pretend), uncertain BitCoin fate with all the scandals, hacks, legal problems, scalability issues, and again - the general mess and the amount of morons, nobody can do anything about.

It's just a mess now. I guess we have to let it sort of die out, the price to drop to 1-2 dollars, morons get tired and move to new online "adventures" and then this project can quietly and slowly begin to evolve into something usable...

i too would like to know some about your "big project" and some details since you are a "developer".

Now, now, lets not be so harsh

17857  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tom Williams ~ The Smoking Gun(s) or Phin's Pholly on: September 06, 2011, 04:11:21 PM
you know, i keep wanting to unsubscribe to this thread cuz a large part of me thinks you're a nut job.

but i just went back and reviewed that NPR podcast and the 25000 BTC on BW's computer has also bugged me ever since i heard about it.  anyone know what MyBitcoins total balance was at the top?

also the fact that there is a Tom Williams one relationship away from Bruce thru Serge G who signed up right after him seems a bit too coincidental as well.
17858  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold: I smell a trap on: September 06, 2011, 03:21:23 PM
oops
17859  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold: I smell a trap on: September 06, 2011, 03:10:41 PM
The swiss franc news has been bad for gold. It hasn't gone up. This is counter intuitive and suggests the price will rise in the future in relation to this news.

I've already talked about backwardation in silver and the manipulations. I can only see it going up in the long run. In the short run it should roughly follow gold I think.

MatthewLM, how does the USD look to you?
17860  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold: I smell a trap on: September 06, 2011, 03:03:41 PM
Yes.

While it seems gold will go down from here there are factors which could push it higher through the week. Interestingly the swiss central bank is now trying to devalue the swiss franc. Later today the US markets are set to fall. Obama will announce more deficit spending on Thursday for sure. Today there was a bounce back in European stocks but those stocks don't look good to me.

Is it wise to think gold will continue to rise further this week before another correction or has it reached the short term top already?

From what I see gold when down a lot earlier today but shot back up again around about when the news came about the Swiss franc but it's not gone back to it's earlier highs.

how does silver look to you?
