I think that is the controller board. It has an FPGA on it. To get a replacement, you go do a lot of basic simple correspondence. To start, ask Avalon and burnin if they will ship you a replacement. Ask what damage trade-in price they will give you.
I've emailed Avalon and just sent a PM to burnin as well. Thank you. While you are in the midst of a misfortune, your device is nonetheless valuable to the community, so continue to treat it with care. It documents a failure mode, and the process of examining it should give insight for design improvements, and practice for the soon to be important repair business.
The rest of the community also wants to know how to get replacements, and who will be helpful when disaster strikes. It will strike. Yesterday we had 2" hail and violent weather. I could easily have taken a lightening strike and had the same mess. Other people will have different issues, perhaps a mouse seeking a warm place to sleep, a dog marking territory, or a wife disappointed with a relationship with a secretary.
I would be very conservative. If the module is damaged, it could in turn damage a replacement part. I would run the unit with 2 modules to be sure that the repair worked. I haven't thought through when & how to bring the suspicious module back online.
Again, take photos of each item that you remove. Perhaps on white butcher paper with a carefully lettered 3x5 card with date and description. Especially, take some close up photos of the controller board, front and back.
You might create a new payment address and put it in your posting signature, perhaps one or two Avalon owners can send a bitcoin or two as a hand-up.
Thanks, once my emotions settle down a bit, I'll dig into taking everything apart and do exactly that. If someone has access to modify the wiki, they might want to add a note about ensuring power is properly distributed to help someone else avoid this tragedy. I'm also wondering if I should just sell the modules in an attempt to recoup my costs. The temperatures were fine last night and this morning, so I would be surprised if any of them were damaged. I was getting over 90GHs. Maybe a long escrow could handle that. I don't know. I'm not sure where to start with that or what the market is for them. I'm open to any advice. I feel I should wait to hear from Avalon or Burnin or someone else regarding replacement parts, but I also realize an idle miner is terribly wasteful. I feel like I should move direction or the other very soon: 1) Get all the parts needed ASAP 2) Put the parts up for sale ASAP. what email address did u use? i might need it as well

I'm screwed. I incorrectly thought the ATX main cable was the only one needed (since, unlike a normal PC where the modular devices need to be powered individually and don't even work otherwise, the Avalon modules all connect directly to the board). I've had power supplies in the past that supported both ATX and AT and I thought this was similar. I plugged it in yesterday, had a little trouble with the USB not being connected, but after a few times taking it apart and putting it back again, I got it working. It ran great all last night and this morning. When I got back after a meeting, this is what I found: [img]http://s24.postimg.org/3mgzefuoh/image_1.jpg[/i mg][img]http://s22.postimg.org/4k68pmthp/image_5.jpg[/im g][img]http://s17.postimg.org/58b8hi923/image_7.jpg[/im g]I emailed Avalon, and they asked me to post here. Talking with the vendor of my power supply (OCZ ZX Series 1250W), he said 600W is too much to go through one wire, but it wouldn't trigger any concerns on their power supply as it doesn't measure power output per wire. The wire itself just melted. What do I do now? I'm starting the RMA process for the power supply but as for the miner... I don't know where to begin. I feel discouraged. I feel like an idiot. i did the exact same thing. but lucky for me, i detected a burning smell and heard a ticking noise. i eventually found the atx cable's wires had melted and caused arching, probably causing the noise. only damage was the atx cables and the atx port (wire insulator) melted into the pins so i had to replace it. decided to scavage it from my old spoilt atx motherboard. the bigger problem is new atx power cable. down here, ocz psu arent very common so i couldnt find the replacement cable and i didnt want to risk it and i was forced to buy a new psu today.

basically i need a new atx power cable (24pin) to connect the PSU to the avalon unit. so i was wondering, can i just use any modular atx cable or must i get the original cable? i know for the atx cable, at the motherboard's end, all pins are standardised. my concern is whether the pins on the atx port on the PSU are standardised as well.

oops sorry. forgot to update this thread. problem has been well..located. it's not the fans

is this related to the other thread about you unit making a noise like a nut is hitting a fan at random?
yes..

ok i messed out and i need a replacement atx cable. are all modular atx cables the same? i can get a modular atx cable from a seasonic psu and use it on my ocz zx series PSU (assuming similar capacity) ?
also i might need to get a spare PSU, is a seasonic x series 1000w/1250w Gold and x 1000w platinum suitable on the avalon batch 1?

From the video I would say that definitely sounds like a metallic object hitting a fan. It's weird how its so intermittent though, I would have thought if something was fouling the fan it would happen more often though. I would have another good look around the inside and try and find that loose nut/bolt, you don't want it coming loose and falling on anything conductive if i want to dismantle it for a thorough inspection, what do i need to take note of? Careful you don't drop anymore of those little nuts into your case, they are a pain in the ass . Also before you do take it apart, try turning it off and giving the case a little shake to see if you can hear anything loose inside. Could it be due to the power board or controller making that noise?

just noticed there's a ticking noise probably near the top of the avalon b1 unit. (where PSU is at the top but it's placed outside) it's a ticking noise, like if you drop a screw on the aluminium body. happens once every 1-2mins. cant hear it while it is on load, not sure if it's there or i cant hear it. but it's definitely there during idle. i've spent 2-3hrs looking and any loose screws, wires, fans, etc nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. though i seem to be missing 1 of the nuts from the casing when i was dismantling it but the noise happened before i lost it. http://youtu.be/m5VXSCVYoi4?t=45srecording of the noise. happens around 47sec mark. If it's not the PSU then it has to be one of the fans. Maybe the fan blade is hitting one of the plastic supports, and you can't hear it under load because the fan might shake less when it has more angular momentum. Since you don't hear it under load, one way to deal with it for now would just be to run the fans 100%, you can do that with in "--avalon-fan 100" or by lowering the max temp to something that'll keep the fans running 24/7 in the "More Options" box on the CGMiner config page Obviously that'll mean a lot more sound anyway, but it might not be as annoying. For a longer term fix you could try buying a spare fan and try swapping fans one by one until you find the problem one. You could also examine the fans closely with the power off and see if any of them are 'wobbly' Could it be due to the power board or controller making that noise?

Finally getting a Batch 3 unit. This is my first unit. I have a few 1100w Server power supplies laying around... I checked the Wiki here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Avalon#Power and found no reference to what specific Voltages the Avalon unit needs? Is it Just 12v? or does it need 5v and 3.3v that the standard ATX supply outputs? Thanks for the assistance! just connect the pcie, cpu and atx plug

guys i need help in setting up the avalon to my network after getting from the seller previously, i was connected to the internet via a direct connection to my router and the avalon connected to the same router as well. but i cant find the ip address of avalon 192.168.0.100 then i tried using the steps in the guide, asking me to change my laptop's ip address. Connect your laptop to the eithernet port of the Avalon (done) Setup your laptop IP address 192.168.0.101 (done) Open http://192.168.0.100 (tried but doesnt work)They likely changed the IP address when they had it using. Go through the steps to reset it, or ask them what IP address they had it configured to use. on the modem wiki it says there is a reset switch on the pinouts but i dont see it on the modem itself
