181  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Investing for the long term in an altcoin is good idea? on: November 30, 2017, 02:12:49 AM

I'd suggest you put only a % of your investment in highly speculative altcoins that show promise (good team, roadmap, milestones, documentation, regular commits, etc). The rest should go into BTC or BTC + ETH.

That way you get a chance to play the lotto and strike gold in 2-3 years but it's not the end of the world if you potentially lose that %.

Anywhere between 5-25% for alts and 95-75% BTC/ETH is a good ratio, at least for me.

What is everyones thoughts on ADA?

It's rather promising and I'm looking to invest in that long-term.

A few tips for improving your project in the near future:

- get a custom domain name (as opposed to the current subdomain - looks cheap)
- get better hosting
- better ux/ui and logo
- roadmap
- github
- team

Good luck!

Nice one, solid work. Thanks!

Time to buy soon I guess, I've been stalking ADA for quite some time now.
186  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The positive impact of technology on society. on: November 30, 2017, 01:27:09 AM
Technology advancement shrinked our society, we are much closely netted now than as we were a few hundred years ago.

Living in the information age certainly has helped us connect to one another at a deeper level, understand our troubles and put aside our differences.

We're getting there, one step at a time.

Think about how long it would've taken in 1800s to deliver a simple message across the ocean vs now. It's instant. We know people are starving right now in a distant corner of the globe. We know people are being abused in X regime without being there physically. We can't plead ignorance this time.

I think that's a good thing a step towards our evolution as a species.
187  Economy / Services / ✍ [FREE/PAID] Uao's community graphic design services on: November 30, 2017, 12:49:57 AM

STATUS: Finished.

UPDATE 2020: No more community work currently.

UPDATE 10/2019: you can now also request infographics. Recent: 0xD Project ANN & Promotion thread.

---

Hello world!

I'm Uao and I will be designing professional logos & graphics for some of your startups, blockchain businesses, ICO's, orgs, YouTube channels (and even forum avatars).

Options:

- pro bono projects, effectively for free.
- paid projects.

What?

- unique graphics, designed from scratch, per your specifications (without using any premade graphics or templates)
- exclusively designed for you (your business/or personal brand)
- you can use it anywhere in commercial or non-commercial projects (your full copyright)
- you can print it on anything (use it offline with the files we provide)
- delivery of any resolutions and files you might need, including the source vector file

How?

In order to apply for a design project, please post your specifications in this thread by answering the following:

#1 - What type of graphics do you need?
(ie. logo design/infographics/ANN or promotion thread design/branding/etc)
#2 - What text should be present in the design?
(your business name/website/org/forum name; ie. "SatoshiN98" or "Myowncoin.com")
#3 - Describe your business/brand/org/ICO/yourself in exactly one single word
(ie. "innovation")
#4 - What's your logo idea in exactly one sentence?
(could also be an image/sketch/existing logo that you like, for reference)
#5 - Are there any pre-existing brand colors or preferred colors that should be present in the logo?
(ie. blue & white, or leave it to the designer to choose)
#6 - (optional) What's your (business) vision or motto?
#7 - (optional) Preferred design style: A. Font-based B. Symbol/Icon-based C. Mascot?

Example of an ACCEPTABLE post:

Quote
#1 - Logo design only
#2 - GatorCoin
#3 - Innovation
#4 - A coin with an alligator head on it
#5 - Green & black
#6 - Saving animals with blockchain tech
#7 - B. Symbol/Icon-based

Why?

- it's nice to give back to the community (long-time forum lurker myself)
- you CAN pay with crypto / Bitcoin for logo design services (what better way to showcase design skills)
- we can potentially make a difference in design quality standards (crypto businesses) which in turn might lead to increased adoption
- can't say no to a challenge really, love to buidl

Here are a few past clients:

Notes

- Posting your design specifications early in the thread does not mean your logo will be designed and I may or may not select to work on projects in chronological order.
- This is a limited promotion and work may stop at any point so there is no guarantee I will design your logo for free.
- Not posting your design specifications in the format specified in this post will probably mean I ignore your post.

Love,
Uao  Wink

188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Massive Bitcoin Core smear campaign on reddit's r/btc on: November 26, 2017, 01:43:33 PM

While I do agree with the general sentiment in this thread, the /r/btc subreddit does have one valid point: /r/bitcoin is censoring tons of threads and I'm not sure why that is so.

Thus, I suspect that's part of the reason lots of people migrated to BCH and that subreddit.
189  Other / Off-topic / Re: What are some disadvantages of BTC? on: November 26, 2017, 01:37:22 PM
We all know the advantages of BTC, but what are some of the disadvantages??

- high fees

- slow processing times

- scalability

- proof-of-work flawed

- not fully decentralized

- not anonymous
190  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ATM locations on a rapid increase... wow on: November 26, 2017, 01:32:05 PM
October 6, 2017 had 92 ATM machines in my city.... today, November 8th, 2017, we have 109.
20% increase in the past month, in June there was around 64 BTC ATM machines. Crazy.

I see 1863 Bitcoin ATMs currently, if I'm not misreading this https://coinatmradar.com/charts/#growth

EDIT: I thought we were discussing global, not regional.
191  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Animal Cruelty - punishments? on: November 26, 2017, 01:15:08 PM
Hey, guys. I haven't seen any thread here towards the problem of animal cruelty. What are your thoughts on it? I am 100% agains anything that has to do with animal cruelty and I try to make a small difference every day in my life. I donate a little something every day to the clinics and organisations helping and healing the tortured or sick animals. Would you help if you could or do you already?
I know for myself that if I were rich I would dedicate a big part of my life to saving and helping them.

Do you think animals torturers and people that are doig any kind of harm to them should be punished? In some countries they already are, but in some parts of the world people still find it okay to do harm to them.

Please share your thoughts Smiley
Hugs,
Belen

One of the main ways to help is to go vegan and stop being the market of the big meat industry by eating animals. Poor or rich, it doesn't matter as long as you do your part.

The only one you can change is yourself, you can't change anyone else.

I created a paper wallet. Can I use a paper wallet the same as any other when it comes to sending and receiving funds? Somebody said that with paper wallet I need to withdraw everything? Can I just leave some money on my paper wallet and receive new funds, basically reuse it?

You will have to create a new paper wallet in order to receive the "change".

193  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Negative effects of technology on: November 26, 2017, 02:24:50 AM
It's hard to balance technology (I'm mostly referring to sitting in front of a machine 8-12 hours/day) and having a healthy lifestyle (diet, sleep, exercise).

That's an ongoing challenge for most people nowadays, I suspect.

Vitalik is a genius, no doubt.

I've always wondered though, what's the point of decentralization when the wealth distribution is so uneven and the entry point for potential validators is so high (Vlad Zamfir said they would require only ~100 of them to keep everything in order). Put two and two together and you get power of decision on chain in the hands of a few people (orgs).

What about offshore bank accounts?

197  Other / Off-topic / Re: What´s a skill you've learned through the internet? on: November 26, 2017, 12:38:31 AM
The internet has brought us many autodidacts, both online and offline. What's something you have learned by using the internet? Can be anything.

I'll kick off.

online: programming, FL Studio
offline: piano (still noob though)

Phew. I though you were asking for a skill that I've learned offline. That would've been tough to answer.
198  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is the meaning of life the same for animals and humans? on: November 26, 2017, 12:35:06 AM
What do you think guys ?

Yes, I sense that all beings that are conscious have the same big-picture purpose.

In my view, we are all players in this complex game of life.

If you ask what's the purpose I think it's evolution of consciousness by making good choices. But that's just me and I'm sure everyone has their own metaphor for this.

199  Economy / Marketplace / Re: I only have 200$ per month ! on: November 25, 2017, 11:46:23 PM
After a month of hard work I have to pay quite a lot of things. I just got one about 200$ to invest in bitcoin. Should or should not. Please help me !  Lips sealed

Is $200 a) your entire monthly income or b) the (investment) amount that remains after paying all the other living expenses?

If a) then I wouldn't invest if I were you. Get a better job (or some skills that would attract a better job).

If b) then I would certainly invest in BTC, ETH about 50% and the rest spread out on a few top 30 alts (IOTA, EOS, XMR, etc - do your own research ofc). That way you stand a chance to win big long-term but don't risk more than you can afford to lose.

As pretty much everyone else pointed out before me, this is not financial advice and investing/trading in crypto is a high-risk business.
200  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to safely invest and store different coins long-term? on: November 23, 2017, 04:07:34 PM
You may get more responses in the "Development and Technical Discussion" category but nevertheless, you pretty much nailed it on the head already.

One important thing to note is that i am not sure if all of those coins you mentioned may have downloadable offline wallets. If you want a cold storage solution that can handle that much diversification in altcoins, you really are better off going with products like the ledger nano or trezor.

Answer to Side Q 1: You can find someone who sells ethereum near you (local physical meetup) and pay in cash (similar to localbitcoins)
Answer to Side Q 2: Exchanges are a good way to buy all your altcoins fast (and with less fees)

Thanks again, makes sense. I guess I will have to try a few different options and see what works best for me.

I'm also considering Electrum + signing transactions offline.

You "offline PC setup" seems reasonable. But maybe little bit complicated.

What about HW wallet? It costs like $80 and it's more convinient.

Thanks for your reply, will look into hardware wallets as well in the near future. It seems that lots of people use those, as opposed to paper wallets.
